Swing and a long drive, deep left field … back, back, back … GONE! To borrow a baseball analogy, John Shirey II of Chunky BBQ hit the ultimate open-fire walk-off over the weekend at Kansas Speedway. Shirey and wife Stephanie won the 44th annual American Royal World Series of BBQ Open Grand Championship - a field of 444 teams from around the globe. Not only was it a major championship, it vaulted the Hershey, Pennsylvania team to KCBS Team of the Year honors by one point over 2023 champ Janky Leg BBQ. What a feat it was and on Episode 284 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast, we visit with John about the thrill, the nerves, the aftermath, the exhaustion and what's next for Chunky BBQ in 2025. We also review our American Royal weekend where the Tailgate Guys competition team got to take a treasured walk for the third time in four years, this time with an 8th-place in baked beans. Some of our other scores also were pretty darned respectable as well (and some weren't) to cap a trip that had its challenges from a blown trailer tire en route to heavy rain on cook morning. A special shout-out to our friend Marty "Sign Man" Prather for supporting our Royal journey. Charlie Wallace of The Grill Guys of Missouri stops by for a rundown of their venture into competition at Wingapalooza in downtown Springfield, where they took home some hardware. It just didn't seem right at “Dr. BBQ” was eliminated for being tasked with cooking a meatless steak. He gives his take. We also discuss some upcoming adventures, his line of rubs and what else he's doing to avoid “retirement” these days. As a sidenote, we want to publicly thank Ray for being a friend of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Show since its inception on low-powered local radio back in 2016. Kiwi Charlie Wallace wanted to be successful playing the guitar one way or another and has succeeded in more than one way. Wallace dropped out of school in favour of creating an online guitar lesson website, ‘Guitar Mastery Method', which kicked off in 2014 and has taught over 1.7 million guitarists over the last decade. The success of GMM allowed Wallace to work towards his other dream: becoming the lead guitarist of a successful rock band. In 2018 Black Smoke Trigger was formed, releasing their first EP in 2019, which grabbed the attention of some major names in the industry. This has all lead to the release of their first album ‘Horizons', which Wallace told Mike Hosking is putting a stamp into the world of who they are as a band. We had the pleasure of interviewing Black Smoke Trigger over Zoom video!New Zealand rock juggernauts Black Smoke Trigger have unleashed their hard-hitting new single “The Way Down” today. The accompanying death-defying music video sees Black Smoke Trigger go to extreme lengths in pursuit of rock n roll glory. Filmed atop The Auckland Sky Tower, the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, the video features the band performing on the rooftop 630ft up and guitarist, Charlie Wallace, jumping off the building whilst shredding a guitar solo.Produced by the legendary Nick Raskulinecz (Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, RUSH) and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (Green Day, Muse, Prince), “The Way Down” is an arena ready rock anthem that combines a gigantic, toe tapping riff from leader and guitarist Charlie Wallace (creator of the hugely successful Guitar Mastery Method) with soaring vocals from frontman Baldrick, who's soaring vocal range channels icons like Chris Cornell and Layne Staley in both passion and versatility and a pummelling rhythm section courtesy of Bassist Dan Fulton, and drummer Josh Te Maro. The track follows the band's previous single “Caught In The Undertow”, the video for which was also a feat of extreme conditions. Filmed at Muriwai beach in Auckland, New Zealand and at a helicopter crash testing facility in a 3.6M deep pool, the whole band performed much of the song underwater, highlighting their dedication to creating unforgettable visual accompaniments for their hard-hitting rock anthems.Blending raw punk aggression with arena-ready hooks, “The Way Down” provides the perfect soundtrack as Black Smoke Trigger literally dives into the unknown. The latest single cements this ambitious quartet as heavy music's most daring new force. With elite musicianship honed from years of tireless work, Black Smoke Trigger show no signs of compromise in their pursuit of creating pure exhilarating rock chaos. Their unbridled passion bleeds through every note. The horizon shines bright for these Kiwi rock trailblazers. Stay tuned for much more to come.ABOUT BLACK SMOKE TRIGGERBlack Smoke Trigger are led by Wallace (creator of the hugely successful Guitar Mastery Method) whose insane talent provides everything from delicate melodic motifs to face-melting shred solos and stadium-conquering riffs. Charlie Wallace has managed to do what SO many others have not been able to figure out. Make Millions playing guitar! (Ok, it’s a little more complicated than that.) In his conversation with Roland Frasier, the founder of the Guitar Mastery Method shares his path to success and the principles that have enabled him to make millions and live his dream. If you are trying to build a passion business online, you will be encouraged by this episode. If you’re trying to transition from being the brand or product to being the CEO, this episode is for you. Charlie had a clear goal for his business, a strong and simple Why: To make enough money to hire his whole band and ensure that they could all tour at the drop of a hat, and show up to practice on time, every time! He’s now doing just that, and more, with a worldwide team making millions. If you’re enjoying the show, you can show your support by heading over to ApplePodcasts and hitting the subscribe button! This will help other smart listeners find us, and we would really appreciate that! Charlie's Top 3 Tips To Help You Succeed In Your Venture: 1. ‘Spend Time’ With Your Top 5 Entrepreneurial Gurus. “I had to listen to them every single day, just to change my mindset, because I had never known anybody with money. So I had to really change a lot of the paradigms in my mind”. Charlie Wallace. 2. Spend any money that you make, especially in the beginning, on education. Don’t hesitate if you can get direct education with people that know what they’re doing. 3. Have a big enough Why? “I went to crazy lengths and worked insane hours and didn’t sleep and, you know, sacrificed everything for a large period of years to the get the business to where it is. I was going to say work harder than anyone else, but it’s too easy to lose motivation. But if you have the Why the hard work is going to happen automatically”. Charlie Wallace. Plus, Listen For • Advice on making a video course (thanks to Charlie's hindsight). “If you know a subject, I literally would just bullet point it and speak to the camera because it’s so much better to have a conversation with somebody through a camera than speaking off a script”. Charlie Wallace • How he transitioned from being the product and brand to the CEO role. “At the end of the day, if I die, Guitar Mastery Method will live on, but it wouldn’t have a few years ago”. Charlie Wallace. • Non-compete issues and hiring success. • What didn't work. “I tried to create something to sell to everybody, and because of that, I could sell it to nobody.” Charlie Wallace.
