Clare's Chief Fire Officer is reminding the county's road users that no route is safe amid snowy and icy conditions today. A Status Orange warning comes into effect at five o'clock this evening and will remain in effect until the same time tomorrow, with significant snowfall accumulations expected. To counteract the effect this is expected to have on travelling conditions, Clare County Council has undertaken an extensive salting and gritting operation spanning over 700 kilometres of the county's roads network. Chief Fire Officer Adrian Kelly says however that no road can ever be made fully safe and that caution is advised at all times.
The number of callouts received by Clare County Fire Service so far this December has risen by a third, compared to the whole of the same month last year. Up to the 20th of this month, fire crews attended 139 separate incidents in Clare, up from 104 in December 2023. These include 84 storm related incidents, 19 road traffic indents, eight ambulance assists, seven oil spills, seven alarm activations, four chimney fires and five outdoor fires. This weekend crews responded to a fire that destroyed the belltower of Ruan Church after the spire was struck by lightening, as well as a house fire in nearby Dromore, which resulted in a young couple losing their home and all their belongings. Clare's Chief Fire Officer, Adrian Kelly says every house fire can be devastating and he's urging people to consider that in the run up to Christmas.
The clean-up operation is underway in Clare in the wake of Storm Darragh. The county was under a status red weather alert, Met Eireann's highest level warning for a number of hours overnight, when gusts of up to 140 kilometres per hour battered the county. Crews from Clare's County Fire Service were mobilised at first light this morning. Clare's Chief Fire Officer, Adrian Kelly outlines the type of incidents crews have been dealing with.
Thousands of homes and businesses in Clare could remain without power overnight tonight, in the wake of Storm Darragh. Around 9,000 properties in the banner lost supply at the peak of the storm weather, as gusts of up to 140 kilometres per hour battered the county. The worst affected areas include Crusheen, Ruan, Clooney, Tulla, Flagmount, Kilmaley and Doonbeg. Currently 4,000 customers in across Clare remain without power and ESB Technical Manager, Michael Sammin says it could take some time to restore supply. Meanwhile, Clare County Fire Service is urging motorists and pedestrians to remain cautious. Clare County Council crews responded to 62 callouts overnight, dealing with fallen trees and debris on the roads. A status yellow wind warning for Clare lifted at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Clare's Chief Fire Officer, Adrian Kelly says, however, there may still be some areas where dangerous conditions remain.
McKeesport fire Chief Jeff Tomovcsik on choosing a career as a first-responder and becoming a certified Chief Fire Officer
The cleanup operation continues in Clare today, in the wake of Storm Ashley. At least 247 homes and businesses in the greater Ennis, Drumquin, Ennistymon, Kilrush and Scariff areas remain without power this morning, after gusts of up to 106 kilometres per hour battered the county. ESB crews are working to restore power to those affected, with faults in most areas expected to be dealt with by half past two this afternoon, though some face a longer wait until evening. While all Shannon Airport services operated to schedule yesterday, thirteen flight diversions have been facilitated by the Midwest Airport, seven of those originally due to land at Cork Airport and six due at Dublin. Between 3am on Sunday and 2am this morning, Clare County Council and Clare County Fire Service responded to over 50 different callouts to incidents across the county due to adverse weather conditions caused by Storm Ashley. Clare's Chief Fire Officer, Adrian Kelly says it was a powerful storm that led to downed trees and power lines and debris on the roads and he's urging motorists and those out and about this morning to take extra care.

Incident commanders, here are some questions for you:How much thought do you put into where you set up your command post?Is it usually on the alpha side of a structure? Why is that? Routine? Street access? What about distractions? For example, noise. That can not only give you a headache but also make you miss an urgent radio call, right? My guest on this edition of Code 3 has been considering questions like this for a while. He has suggestions for things to think about the next time you pull up to the fireground and are ready to drop that tailgate.Robby Bergerson is the executive deputy chief of the Waco, Texas Fire Department. A fascinating and rare glimpse into the world of fox red Labrador Jax, a police victim recovery dog. There are fewer than 40 dogs working in this highly specialised field within the police in the UK. Victim recovery dogs - also known as cadaver dogs or human remains dogs - search for human remains, blood or tissue as well as shallow graves or blood spattered evidence such as clothing or weapons. The stakes are high. On the one hand, the work of Jax and dogs like him is key to identifying forensic evidence, which can be definitive in prosecuting violent crimes. But there's a very human side too: in a search for a missing person who is presumed dead, the location of a body can bring much needed closure to family and loved ones. It's not an everyday sort of job, and Jax is often deployed as part of a large missing person search, travelling from home and dropping into unfamiliar sites. His steadiness, sociability and love of the hunt means that he and his handler are a highly effective part of the wider search teams. Clare's Fire and Rescue service is urging households and business owners across the county to dispose of their waste with extra caution in the coming weeks. It comes ahead of the busy Halloween period which is traditionally a time when materials are illegally incinerated to fuel large bonfires. Allowing someone without a permit to remove waste is an offence under the Waste Management Act of 1996 and can incur a fine of up to €5,000. Chief Fire Officer with Clare County Council Adrian Kelly says the impact on local communities is devastating.

Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton (or Sab) took my breath away when I met her. She has achieved, and continues to achieve, so much despite her early life being incredibly tough.Sab found herself homeless aged 16 after her beloved Dad died and her mum's mental health crumbled. She talked to me about how she has suffered from hyper-vigilance ever since, as the strategies she developed for keeping safe while sleeping rough, are still there. She eventually found a place to live and was determined to become a fire fighter, applying to over 30 places before being accepted aged 18. She is now Chief Fire Officer of the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. She met her husband Mike in her early days in the fire service. Following an incident in which she believed Mike had been seriously injured, Sab wrote a research paper on the mechanisms of decision-making under pressure. She has a First Class degree in Psychology, a Masters in International Fire Service Development and a PhD in Behavioural Neuroscince. Sab has been faced with a lot of gender bias while in the Fire Service (for example in social settings people will say, 'Oh you're so brave' to a male firefighter; but 'Aren't you afraid?' to female firefighters. She has frequently experienced 'the backlash effect' when people are uncomfortable with you because you are doing a job associated with the opposite gender. She recently published her book 'The Gender Bias' which looks at the everyday prejudices which women experience and also has some practical solutions to offer. In our chat she clearly illustrated this, describing two very striking studies of little children. One study (as it happens, involving a firefighter's pole!) showed how parents unconsciously treat sons and daughters differently when it comes to perceived risk; the other study showed how children also have gender biases from a very young age, but how this can be reversed easily when they're little.Sab and her husband Mike have a teenage daughter Gabby. Sab remembers how she started her PhD the day Gabby was born (yes, I don't blame you if you have to read that sentence twice!) and was promoted the day she went on maternity leave. She and Mike have been a tight parenting team, but interestingly Sab told me Mike experienced his own backlash when he took their daughter to baby classes, with mums of the other babies tending to gatekeep their maternal role and keep Mike at a slight distance. Now that Gabby is a teenager, Sab is having flashbacks to her own teenage years and remembering more vividly that she was sleeping rough in a shop doorway aged 15, with people walking past her as if she wasn't really there. She told me how important it is to smile, have eye contact and say hello to homeless people, even if you don't have any change. If anyone knows, Sab does. Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On International Women's Day we talk to the foreign secretary, James Cleverly MP, as he travels to Sierra Leone to launch the UK's new international women and girls strategy. Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton is one the most senior fire fighters in the UK. The current Chief Fire Officer of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has in her 22 year career covered major incidents such as the London Bridge terror attack, the Finsbury Park terror attack and the aftermath of Grenfell. Last month on Woman's Hour we discussed the fire service after recent reports hit the headlines of allegations of bullying and sexual harassment of female fire fighters at different services. Last year, an independent review found the London Fire Brigade to be institutionally racist and misogynistic. Just seven percent of fire fighters are women and there are even less in high leadership roles. Sabrina joins Nuala to talk about her new book The Gender Bias The Barriers That Hold Women Back, And How to Break Them, which unpicks why women are judged differently, and how we can tackle those biases, and also tells us whether she thinks the fire service has a problem with women. Sunday marked the end of the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, a golden weekend for Team GB women. Keely Hodgkinson retained her 800m title before team captain Jazmin Sawyers won a long jump Gold, earning her a first major title of her senior career with a world-leading jump of seven metres. Jazmin now holds the British Indoor record and joins Nuala. What is it like to be a poet, a woman and a performer of poetry at this particular moment in time? Kim Moore aims to answer this question in her new book Are You Judging Me Yet? Poetry and Everyday Sexism. The book contains poems from her collection All the Men I Never Married, for which she won the Forward prize last year. She explains to Nuala McGovern why poetry is the perfect medium for exploring sexism.

Clare's Chief Fire Officer is warning that chimney and house fires occur every Christmas that could be avoided. The main causes of fire at this time of year are candles left unaccompanied, older non-LED fairy lights and Christmas trees falling over. Clare's County Fire Service says open fires without fireguards and decorations in close proximity to open flames are also a big concern. Chief Fire Officer Adrian Kelly has been telling Clare FM's Rebecca O'Sullivan about the risks to watch out for this Christmas.
On Monday's Morning Focus, Alan spoke to Adrian Kelly who is the Chief Fire Officer to speak about the recent attack on the firefighters called to a bonfire in the Cloughleigh area of Ennis. Adrian spoke on behalf of the service as he shared an account of the events that unfolded on Saturday night. While fire service personnel escaped injury, a fire appliance was damaged and now must be removed from service.

Have you ever considered where you got your work ethic? My baby-faced Brother, Fire Chief Aaron Culwell, a true Sooner, born and raised in Norman Oklahoma, has thought through this question. In episode 83 Culwell shared his findings with us. He also shares how his faith shaped the direction of his life, leading him to the fire service, the Air Force, and a life committed to public safety. Give it a listen and enjoy! Our guest introduces himself: I am an experienced Fire Chief with the Will Rogers Airport Fire Department in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Previously, held the position of Deputy Fire Chief at a municipality outside of the Tulsa Metro Area. Additionally, I am currently serving as an Assistant Fire Chief with the United States Air Force Reserves at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. Personally, I am working on my own professional growth through Oklahoma State University Master's in Fire and Emergency Management Administration Program and I am participating in the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy. I had the opportunity recently sit on the 8 th Essentials Validation Committee with IFSTA, was awarded Fire Instructor of the Year by the Fire Instructors of Oklahoma Organization, I received the Executive Fire Officer designation from the Oklahoma State Fire Marshals Commission and gained my Chief Fire Officer and Chief Training Officer designations from the Center for Public Safety Excellence. At home I am a loving father of a wonderful seven-year-old daughter who has just as much of an adventurer's heart as I do. We hike, climb, hunt, and fish as often as possible. I am blessed to have two patriotic brothers, one serving in Colorado, and another serving in Virginia who recently had a set of twins. __________________________ You can find the Fireground Fitness podcast wherever great podcasts are located. The ICHEC at NUI Galway and Dublin Fire Brigade have announced details of a joint initiative to explore big data analytics within the Fire Service context. While these types of approaches have been adopted more widely in other countries, namely the US and Canada, they are novel for Ireland. The project is fully funded as part of the European Competency Centre which is based at ICHEC. The EuroCC initiative includes a dedicated outreach programme to advance the use of high-performance and supercomputing in Academia, the Public Sector and SMEs across Europe. Dennis Keeley, Chief Fire Officer, Dublin Fire Brigade, said, “Dublin Fire Brigade has in its most recent strategic plan committed to improving community safety, response and resilience by developing a leading practice Organisational Intelligence Hub, capturing all relevant data, informing an Area Risk Categorisation for the city and county and sharing it throughout the organisation. “Innovative collaborations such as this initiative with ICHEC will serve to strengthen DFB's internal capabilities to manage and interrogate the vast amount of data about the built environment which now exists, and ultimately to further the public safety mission of Dublin Fire Brigade.” Peter Woods, Business Development Manager, ICHEC said, “ICHEC has a strong track record in using HPC and big data to assist public sector bodies. “In this case, our objective is to identify and assess linkages across the multiple data sets available, and to explore the potential for the application of big data and predictive analytics to derive insight into this data. “This project demonstrates the value of advanced computer and supercomputing expertise for managing large-scale data and informing policy. EuroHPC offers ICHEC the opportunity to work with public sector bodies and ensure that knowledge required to successfully complete projects is transferred from the National Competency Centre to these bodies.” Project Summary Dublin Fire Brigade and ICHEC have assembled a dataset that uses authoritative data such as Ordnance Survey Ireland, Geodirectory, as well as spatially matched data from internal sources, and external sources, such as Valuation Office Open Data and SEAI Building Energy Rating Open Data. This dataset is being assessed as to the level of quality achievable and its suitability for further analytics processes. ICHEC manages the national high-performance and supercomputing services on behalf of the State. Dublin Fire Brigade provides frontline Fire-EMS and Rescue services from 14 stations, (12 full-time and 2 Retained) strategically located throughout Dublin City and County covering a population of over 1.35 million and 921.7km2. The project is being coordinated by the European Competency Centre Ireland (EuroCC Ireland) which is based at the Irish Centre for High-End Computing and which is co-funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and the European Commission. Through EuroCC Ireland agencies can access Supercomputing capabilities in Europe currently unavailable in Ireland.
