Andrew Boyd is a humorist and long-time veteran of creative campaigns for social change. He led the decade-long satirical media campaign “Billionaires for Bush,” and is co-founder of both Agit-Pop Communications, an award-winning creative agency and the netroots powerhouse The Other 98%, which specializes in winning the battle of the ‘story' through meme warfare with some of the Internet's most viral original political content. For the last many years, he has been grappling with the issue of Climate Change, co-creating the Climate Ribbon grief-storytelling ritual and leading the Climate Clock project, which melds art, science, tech and grassroots organizing I Want a Better Catastrophe: Navigating the Climate Crisis with Grief, Hope, and Gallows Humor (New Society, 2023) is Andrew's third. And it provides an intellectual journey through both essays & interviews, which at once shows Andrew's passion and his quest to understand the paradoxes of the existential climate crisis. About the book: WITH GLOBAL WARMING projected to rocket past the 1.5°C limit, lifelong activist Andrew Boyd is thrown into a crisis of hope, and off on a quest to learn how to live with the "impossible news" of our climate doom. He searches out eight leading climate thinkers -- from collapse-psychologist Jamey Hecht to grassroots strategist adrienne maree brown, eco-philosopher Joanna Macy, and Indigenous botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer -- asking them: "Is it really the end of the world? and if so, now what?" With gallows humor and a broken heart, Boyd steers readers through their climate angst as he walks his own. From storm-battered coastlines to pipeline blockades and "hopelessness workshops," he maps out our existential options, and tackles some familiar dilemmas: "Should I bring kids into such a world?" "Can I lose hope when others can't afford to?" and "Why the fuck am I recycling?" He finds answers that will surprise, inspire, and maybe even make you laugh in this insightful and irreverent guide for achieving a "better catastrophe." Learn more about your ad choices. This episode features a conversation with Sam Narr, Founder and CEO of Kibbo Kift Agency, a specialist PR and performance marketing agency exclusively promoting climate solutions and social justice initiatives. Heavily influenced by his third-generation immigrant background, working-class roots, and an education in radical social movements and pop culture, Sam's motivation to work in environmentalism stems from an ambition to rebalance society's social and racial inequities.Over the last five years, Kibbo Kift Agency has worked with 60+ clients including climate activists, corporate pressure groups, innovative tech start-ups, responsible fashion brands, global climate organisations, and more.Kibbo Kift's projects have included a national campaign with Greenpeace UK, a national campaign to pressure MPs to support the only proposed legislation that ensures a joined-up approach to tackling the dual climate and nature crises, as well as ongoing media management of advertising and PR pressure group Clean Creatives, and global press office management for the world's largest digital clock, The Climate Clock, which counts down the time left until humanity passes the 1.5C threshold.Amongst other things, Sam and I discussed the rightwards political shift happening across the UK, Europe, and the United States, where this issue gets tangled up with climate, and what can be learned from the campaigns that brought us Brexit and Trump.Additional links: Visit the Kibbo Kift Agency websiteCheck out the Climate and Nature Bill campaignExplore Britain Talks Climate from Climate OutreachDing dong, it's The Climate ClockDig in to the Communicating Climate Change E-Learning Course on the Creatives for Climate Community HubSee The Brexit BusRead about the Stop the Boats campaignReclaiming Englishness with Caroline LucasCommunicating Climate Change Call-In Show #1

His previous positions include President of The Opportunity Agenda (a social justice communication lab that he cofounded), Assistant to the Solicitor General at the Department of Justice, and Director of Human Rights at the Ford Foundation. Gan Golan is an artist, cultural strategist, and bestselling author. How do we navigate the climate emergency and come to terms with the catastrophic consequences of humanity's inaction? How do we remain engaged in working to make a difference? Is there still hope?  Could you use a guide to the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it?In his new book, I Want a Better Catastrophe: Navigating the Climate Crisis with Grief, Hope, and Gallows Humor, veteran activist, thinker, doer, storyteller, and CEO of the Climate Clock,  Andrew Boyd navigates between the denial and doom many of us feel to find a third way of approaching our situation: courageously facing the data and its ramifications, and helping people imagine what's still possible and where we might still exercise agency. You may be thinking, “Oh, no, this is going to be depressing - but my guest, Andrew Boyd, brings, wit, wisdom and gallows humor to our existential questions.Andrew Boyd interviewed 8 leading climate thinkers and heard a whole range of responses to the existential dilemma of the Climate Crisis. In this interview, he shares some of the insights that surfaced.   Some topics that came up in this lively discussion:Where are we now and where are we headed as the climate crisis worsens? How to hope: 4 types of hope4 paths of declineEconomic realitiesThe role of community and equityChallenges and giftsFinding inspiration and even humorMoving forward with renewed hopehttps://bettercatastrophe.com/https://andrewboyd.com/https://www.theclimateribbon.org/https://climateclock.world/“It always seems impossible until it's done.” Nelson MandelaIf you enjoyed this show, please leave a positive review and share with your friends. Might it be that the climate crisis requires not just technological change but also culture change. Might it be that as a civilization we need profound shifts in how we think, speak and act. If that's the case, then art and creative expression will be critical to stretching our imaginations and to creating the new narratives, paradigms and mindsets that underpin our society.  Planning for this episode I became fascinated with the role and potential of artistic movements in creating culture change. I actually recorded this episode with a live audience of designers and creative people at IDEO, the design firm where I work. And so the pressure was on.  After extensive research, I was thrilled to find Raquel deAnda and Gan Golan. Raquel is an artist, curator and cultural producer involved in many climate and social justice organizations, and she helps lead the US Department of Arts and Culture. Gan Golan artist, activist, creative strategist, and NY Times bestselling author and he is a co-founder of the Climate Clock.  Raquel and Gan met while designing and organizing the role of art in the 2014 People's Climate March. That was one of the largest climate mobilizations in history and so they bring really informed perspectives on the power of creativity in the climate movement. We talked about that experience, the work they're doing now, how artists continue to impact the climate movement and advice for anyone that wants to use their creativity to address climate change. So whether you're an artist, creatively curious or just eager for that culture change we need – this episode has a lot you'll enjoy. Here we go. In Today's Episode, we cover:[3:11] How Raquel and Gan met [4:04] The role of art and creativity at the People's Climate March [7:05] The impacts of the March on the climate justice movement [10:59] What is actually happening and what is the pushback [14:33] What is Climate Clock and what is it aiming to achieve [18:41] How can people get involved and utilize Climate Clock's resources [19:56] Examples of art as an organizing strategy [21:02] What is the US Department of Arts and Culture and what is it aiming to achieve [24:32] Traction for supporting artists through local government [26:16] Funding barriers for climate creatives and ways to support [30:27] How to elevate the urgency of climate in our public discourse [33:54] Advice for creatives interested in climate justice work [36:19] How to bring climate action into the house as parents [39:34] Finding inspiration and emerging ideas [43:14] Other climate resources: Like the Waters, We Rise [45:37] Lifting up joy in work and activism Resources & People Mentionedhttps://climateclock.world/ (Climate Clock) https://usdac.us/ (US Department of Arts and Culture) https://climatejusticealliance.org/ (Climate Justice Alliance) http://www.raqueldeanda.org/ (Like the Waters, We Rise ) Connect with Raquel deAnda and Gan GolanConnect with http://www.raqueldeanda.org/ (Raquel) Connect with https://www.linkedin.com/in/gan-golan-21180b7/ (Gan) Connect With Jason Rissmanhttps://investedinclimate.com/ (https://InvestedInClimate.com)  On https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonrissman/ (LinkedIn) On https://twitter.com/jasonrissman (Twitter) Subscribe to https://pod.link/1620915138 (Invested In Climate)
