Song: Pray With Our Feet Words by: Paul Vasile, based on a quotation by Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel Music by: Paul Vasile Notes: This is what folk in Minneapolis are doing -- praying with their feet, getting out on the street. They're singing songs to bless each other, the people they're protecting, and the ICE agents who are so misguided. And this is not the only place in the world where people of "middle power" gather -- not super-powers, not uber-wealthy -- just people who care about living in a world where we feed and educate our children, hold jobs with purpose. Paul Vasile describes it as "belonging belovedness -- you are safe, you are seen, you are heard." In this conversation, we dive into the sometimes knotty weeds of faith and how someone who is deeply connected in a faith tradition might want to expand into questions of what world we want to create together. Big trees. "Talk less, sing more." "As a queer person, I experienced a faith that helped me be a bigger, better me." Songwriter Info: Paul Vasile (he/him) is a church musician, teacher, coach, and composer who finds his greatest joy in collaborative and community-centered work. Committed to modeling expansive, imaginative, and hospitable experiences of music making wherever he goes, Paul's leadership builds trust, invites spaces of creativity, vulnerability, and play, and supports practices of reflection and holistic learning. For the past decade he has offered short- and long-term transitional leadership, consulting services, and creative resources to faith communities in seasons of discernment, challenge, and transformation. From 2016 to 2023, Paul served as the Executive Director of Music that Makes Community, a non-profit that shares "paperless" (oral tradition) leadership practices and songs. He traveled across North America modeling distinctive approaches to communal singing and learning at retreat centers, conferences, denominational gatherings, seminaries, and in congregations of all sizes. Paul also composes music that invites communities to express and explore their connection to sacred stories, their bodies, and the ecosystems that sustain us. Passio explains how shadow work—brutal self-honesty, moral responsibility, and dismantling ego and fear—is inseparable from true freedom, and why objective morality, not belief or hope, governs human liberation. This conversation is challenging, uncomfortable, and meant to push you out of comfort and into real action, clarity, and personal responsibility. A society grows great when old people plant trees under whose shade they will never sit.Trees that live long do not grow quickly. It requires patience to grow a tree that will endure. The root word of patience is the Latin verb “pati.” It means “to suffer” or “to endure.”The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago.The second-best time is today.A person with a purpose is a person on a mission.A person on a mission is a person with a passion.Passion is another strange word. It does not mean what you think it does. The English word “passion” comes directly from the Latin noun “passio” which means “suffering.” If you have “compassion” for someone, it means that you are “suffering with them.” Every Easter we hear about “The Passion of the Christ.”Patience and passion share the same Latin root. Pati is the noun. Passio is the verb. And they both mean suffering.A person with a passion has a vision of the future for which they are willing to suffer. The builder of a brand is the planter of a tree: a visionary missionary. And their principal tool is storytelling.Stories build personalities.Stories build people.Storytelling is world-building.Stories build cultures.Stories build brands that endure.Be careful what you say.A word of affirmation is a spark that can become a flame that will illuminate a person's path into the future. A word of discord, disdain, or disharmony can quench that vital spark. We carry the power of light and darkness in our tongues.Be careful what you say.You can build a brand with your stories. You can build people, too.Say the right things and you can build a life. You can speak happiness. You can build happiness.Say the right things and you can live happiness.Speak it. Build it.Say it.

The Cristal Baschet is a very unique, rare, and delicate otherworldly-sounding glass organ comprised of 56 chromatically-tuned glass rods . Only a handful of musicians on this planet play the instrument professionally; one of them is Loup Barrow, a French musician and composer. Barrow has been a committed instrumentalist since first taking violin lessons at age 5; he's also focused on drums, Moroccan percussion, steel pan, and the glass harp. He features the Cristal Baschet, with piano and orchestra, on a striking album called Immineo, which might bring to mind Arvo Pärt or the 11th-century German composer, mystic, and abbess Hildegard Von Bingen. Loup Barrow has spent the past few hours here in our studio assembling this sound sculpture, which he plays, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Northern Lights 2. Passio

Entisenä taistolaisena tunnettu Saisio on herättänyt viime vuosina huomiota esimerkiksi feminismiin, Me too -liikkeeseen sekä woke- ja cancel-kulttuureihin liittyvillä kannanotoillaan.
Pirkko Saisio kertoo uudesta romaanistaan Passio. Kirjailija kuljettaa lukijaansa halki Euroopan historian. Tarina vie 1400-luvun Firenzestä 1950-luvun Helsinkiin, aina uuteen muotoon sulavan kullan ja säihkyvien, veristen timanttien mukana. Saision uusi romaani on yksi Finlandia-palkintoehdokkaista.
How many times have you said or heard- follow your passion? What does that even mean? You will be surprised. Take a listen.

"What we resist not only persists, but will grow in size." ~ Carl Jung There are a couple of different words for what each Enneagram type resists - but typically they are referred to as The Passion or The Vice. So when I first began hearing about the Passions I was confused because Passion sounded good - like something you’re really good at or something you really love. But, in this context Passion comes from the Latin word Passio which meas TO SUFFER. I absolutely prefer PASSION over VICE because the definition of Vice is ‘moral fault or wickedness'. Do you FEEL the difference? What we would call a fault or an act of wickedness, a vice, seems to be an outward action where are PASSION is inward…it’s what we HOLD INSIDE. It might even seem GOOD to suffer in silence or even deny our suffering. We will look at Enneagram types 1, 2 and 3 in this episode. #Enneagram #EnneagramPassions #Enneagram1 #Enneagram2 #Enneagram3 #SpiralDynamics #Worldviews

In 1968, as Warsaw Pact forces invaded and occupied what was then Czechoslovakia, a young composer in another corner of the Soviet empire did something just as provocative. In Estonia, the composer Arvo Pärt produced a musical piece entitled “Credo.” “Credo” means “I believe” in Latin. “Believe in what?” you ask. “I believe in Jesus Christ” was Pärt's answer, followed by Matthew 5:38-39, “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil.” This kind of open declaration of Christian faith was unacceptable in the USSR. According to Pärt's biographer, Paul Hilliard, the Soviets saw the “strongly personalized religious declaration” of the title and the text itself as a “gesture of defiance” and a “direct provocation.” So the Soviets promptly banned “Credo.” Their actions, however, did not end the composer's career, nor did it dampen his commitment to composing music inspired by his faith. Instead, “Credo” would mark the start of a fifty-year run that has made Pärt the most performed living composer in the world. More importantly, “Credo” also marked a musical and spiritual turning point in his life. As Hilliard describes, by 1968, Pärt had written himself into a kind of musical cul-de-sac. Up to that point, he utilized thoroughly modern forms of music, such as serialism and collage, in his compositions. Along the way, he'd grown skeptical that “progress in art” was even possible, or at least progress that was in any way analogous to the progress seen in science. So Pärt began to look back instead of forward for his inspiration, back to “early music”— which for him meant music before Bach. Not coincidentally, it was during this part of his career that Pärt experienced a spiritual awakening. It led him to convert to the Russian Orthodox Church. With his faith and his art now inseparably intertwined, Pärt began to compose his most powerful works, sacred music for chorus. Like that early music that inspired him, Pärt believes, as he once told the BBC, that the text is “more important than the music.” Thus, Pärt uses his music to draw the listener's attention to what is being said, and describes the listener's task to “find what is behind every word.” As one critic pointed out, “What is interesting in Pärt's music is what is not there. There is little rhythmic complexity, no extravagant use of orchestration, no self-conscious harmonic display or dissonance.” In other words, there's nothing that would obscure the text and distract from its message. These elements especially come together in his 1982 composition, Passio. The Latin text is from John 18 and 19. Arrangement-wise, it couldn't be simpler: two soloists, a quartet and a choir accompanied by an organ and a few other instruments. But in a simplicity in service of the text, the piece has, in Pärt's words, “given food for hundreds and thousands of composers, and it will continue to do so.” The music is timeless in the way that a religious icon is: Both are windows into eternity. At the end you are ready to join Pärt in the Passio's closing prayer, which is also the central message of Holy Week: “You have suffered for us, have mercy on us. Amen.” That the message of Holy Week and the message of Arvo Pärt's music are “inextricably intertwined,” is exactly as art and faith should be. But, unfortunately, it so rarely is. To observe Holy Week and to prepare for Easter, come to BreakPoint.org. We will link you to amazing performances of Pärt's music. And, you can also download a devotional booklet for Good Friday: “The Seven Last Sayings of Jesus from the Cross.” It's beautifully illustrated, and absolutely free at BreakPoint.org/7sayings.
