Lord Karan Bilimoria created the brand in response to a lack of appropriate beer to have with spicy Indian food, but his journey to success was paved with challenges. We discuss how he almost lost the business three times and his decision to step down as chairman. He also gives us his views on the state of British business and what leaders can do to thrive despite the many challenges facing the economy today.Credits:Presenters: Éilis CroninProducers: Inga MarsdenArtwork: David Robinson Hosted on Acast. This week, Holly was lucky enough to sit down with Shamil Thakrar, over a cup of Dishoom's freshly brewed chai tea, and learnt what's really at the heart of his business. At the very beginning, Shamil and his co-founders set out with the goal of bringing the beauty of the Irani cafés they so loved in Bombay to the UK. Now with nine restaurants across the country – boy did they do just that. Coming from a business school and consultancy background, in his younger years, Shamil was far from the path of owning a restaurant. However, with passion and more than a stroke of determination to prove the naysayers wrong, he used this experience to follow his dream. In 2010, the first Dishoom restaurant was born. However, it wasn't always smooth sailing, and Shamil learnt that focusing solely on the numbers and profits was holding both him and the business back.   Shamil soon began pioneering a new approach – putting culture, soulfulness, kindness and authenticity centre stage, fuelled by his recognition that, “Anything, to be truly successful, has to have a bit of poetry at its heart”.  Encapsulating what it means to be in love with your business, Shamil shares how incorporating creativity with history and art has allowed him to build a truly immersive brand, loved by many.  If you enjoyed this conversation, you might also enjoy Holly's episode with  Lord Billamoria, founder of Cobra Beer. Welcome to Saturday's Solo Episode. In this week's episode I address Fear - there is a lot of it around at the moment. Fear of catching the coronavirus. Fear of going out. Fear of doing anything. Now is not the time to roll over and die. Yes, things are tough for most people. And I'm not even talking about . If you're a business owner you're extremely lucky if you haven't been impacted by the financial implications of Covid-19. I know I have.  I've learnt some powerful lessons. And I'm using fear as a positive. As a motivator. To re-assess my podcast agency business. To re-assess my life. To re-envision it. To recalibrate. To re-set. And make sure that when things turn. And they undoubtably will. I'll be in position to go again.  Stronger than pre-coronavirus. I hope the world. And you. Are doing the same. On this week's episode I also talk about: Podpreneur - the new FREE Facebook Group for aspiring podcasters that I launched with 13 people last week and is already up to nearly 400! Come join us here. Against the advice of family and friends, Lord Bilimoria started Cobra Beer in 1989 from a thirst for a truly exceptional beer to go with Indian food. But the journey was no easy ride, with the business a hair’s breadth from failure on no less than three occasions over the years. Before we dive in, I've got a new podcast for you to check out. Those of you who are regular listeners to the show will know that I launched the Screw It, Just Do It podcast agency back in the summer. It's called the Festival Of Enterprise, a FREE two-day event at the NEC in Birmingham, which the organisers wanted a podcast to promote as part of their marketing strategy. The event features 150+ speakers over two days and is for entrepreneurs and business owners, with the aim of helping you grow your business faster. I've put together interviews with the likes of Lord Bilimoria, founder of Cobra Beer, Trustpilot founder Peter Holten Muhlmann, Fran Boorman, Melanie Eusebe and a few former guests of this show in Piers Linney and Camilla Ainsworth. Got to Festival of Enterprise to grab your free ticket and download the podcast. I'll be there over the two days speaking and chatting to a number of the speakers. I'm working on another six podcasts for a mixture of brands and entrepreneurs to launch this autumn, and have capacity for another three more before the new year.If you'd like to have a chat about helping put together a podcast for your brand, be that business or personal, please get in touch by emailing alex@screwitjustdoit.org Chris Edson and his Co-Founder, Mike Gibbs, met whilst both were working as advisors to the NHS. Having seen the impact of lifestyle diseases on both people and health services first-hand, they decided to quit their jobs back in 2014 to try and find a solution. Diseases like Type II Diabetes cost the NHS over £10 Billion per year and are preventable through lifestyle interventions. So they created a programme that would help people live a healthier life, free of chronic conditions. Within a year of launching they became the first online behavioural change programme to be commissioned by the NHS. They've since been recognised in the Top 50 startups in the European Union and both Chris and Mike were featured in Forbes 30 under 30 list. I met up with Chris to find out more. Let's StartUp!

Talks on Entrepreneurial Leadership at London Business School - TELL Series

Ever wondered what it’s like to start a beer company in your 20s, export to 50 countries and reach an annual retail turnover of £178 million? (and get knighted in the process too). Join TELL Series on Wednesday 20 April in welcoming Lord Karan Bilimoria, founder of Cobra Beer. Karan founded Cobra at 27 when he was a Cambridge law graduate with £20,000 in student debts. He delivered beer in an old Citroen 2CV, while his friends worked for the likes of the Goldman Sachs. Since then, Cobra has become one of the fastest growing beer brands with offices in 4 continents, serving 50 countries. Within the UK alone, Cobra has a current retail value turnover of £178 million, is sold in nearly 6,000 bars, pubs and clubs and in over 12,000 branches of supermarkets and off-licenses throughout the UK. Cobra Beer also went through its trials and tribulations. Karan almost lost the brand several times in the past years, especially during the 2008 financial crisis when Cobra lost out on key investments. Ever the undeterred entrepreneur, Karan persevered and Cobra has been on a roaring comeback ever since. Competing against brands that are centuries old, Cobra has become a household name in less than two decades. Cobra beer has won numerous accolades and Karan himself was appointed as a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2004. He also won EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003 and Business Person of the Year by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2004. In 2006, Karan was appointed The Lord Bilimoria, of Chelsea. His talk at London Business School is part of the 2015-2016 Tell Series talks and it was recorded on 20 April 2016 at London Business School. Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the businessman Karan Bilimoria - who set up production of a beer designed to be drunk with Indian food, imported it to Britain - and is now selling it back to India. As a student at Cambridge, Karan missed Indian food and used to eat at restaurants several times a week. But he disliked the gassy lagers they served – finding he could neither eat nor drink as much as he would have liked. He decided to develop a beer that was smoother and less gassy - especially designed to be drunk with Indian food. He worked with a brewer in Mysore, India, and initially they prepared to market Panther Beer - but a last-minute stint of market research led to them changing the name to Cobra Beer. It has won a string of liquor industry awards, is sold in more than 30 countries and the company is expected to turn over more than £60 million this year. But when Karan first started on his business career, his family were horrified. He had already qualified as a chartered accountant and had just graduated in law from Cambridge, but instead of a stable profession he started to import polo sticks, then began trading in up-market ladies' clothes. His father urged him to find a more solid career, but Karan persisted, delivering crates of Cobra Beer to Indian restaurants from the back of his battered 2CV. It took more than five years for the brand to establish itself, but it is now a familiar site not just in restaurants, but on supermarket and off-licence shelves.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong Book: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho Alternative to Bible: The Gathas of Zorathushtra Luxury: Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister videos
