This is the latest in my series of podcasts explaining how economics works in the credit crunch and now virus pandemic era. This week I give my thoughts on will UK interest-rates be 2.5% in a year's time? Did Forward Guidance work? What do I make of the UK-US and UK-India trade deals? Will the German fiscal expansion boost the economy? Will any other currency surge like the New Taiwan Dollar?

As the UK and India inch closer to sealing their most ambitious bilateral trade agreement post-Brexit, the stakes have never been higher. In this episode of The Morning Brief, host Anirban Chowdhury speaks to Pallavi Joshi Bakhru, Partner and UK Corridor Leader at Grant Thornton Bharat to unpack the long-awaited deal poised to reshape £43 billion in annual trade between the two nations. With UK exporters set to save up to £900 million in tariffs and Indian workers finally gaining access to the long-sought Social Security Agreement, the episode dives into what each country truly stands to gain. Questions remain: Have thorny issues like data protection, IP rights, and worker mobility really been resolved? Can this deal serve as a blueprint for India’s much-anticipated pact with the US? And will promises on paper translate into performance on the ground? Stay tuned for a sharp look at a trade moment that could redefine bilateral economics in a fractured global order.Tune inYou can follow Anirban Chowdhury on his social media: Twitter and LinkedinCheck out other interesting episodes from the host like: Tariffs trump trade, The Curious Case of IndusInd Bank, The Influencer Economy’s Quiet Reset, India’s Biggest Hospital has a Chronic Illness and much more.Catch the latest episode of ‘The Morning Brief’ on ET Play, The Economic Times Online, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, JioSaavn, Amazon Music and Youtube.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Technology Minerals PLC (LSE:TM1) chairman Robin Brundle joins Proactive's Stephen Gunnion with details of the company's 48.35% owned battery recycling business, Recyclus Group, joining the UK and Indian government-backed Innovating for Transport and Energy Systems (ITES) scheme. Brundle explained that Recyclus' involvement stems from a visit by an Indian delegation to its Wolverhampton site, showcasing a full-scale lithium-ion battery processing plant and a mobile solution concept, which previously won a £1.96 million Innovate UK grant. The ITES scheme aims to address India's vast need for lithium-ion battery recycling, given its population of approximately 1.5 billion people and the prevalence of devices containing these batteries. Recyclus' technologies, including a mobile solution, aim to enhance recycling capabilities, thereby supporting India's net zero targets. Upcoming steps involve workshops with Indian companies to explore commercial opportunities, emphasizing the importance of understanding local business nuances. This partnership is viewed as a vote of confidence in the Recyclus technology by both governments, highlighting Technology Minerals' British innovation in the recycling sector. #TechnologyMinerals #BatteryRecycling #InnovateUK #LithiumIonRecycling #UKIndiaCollaboration #SustainableTechnology #CircularEconomy #NetZeroGoals #EStandsUK #Recyclates #ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

As India is quickly developing as a major power, Global Security Briefing considers its prospects as a partner for the UK in the context of the Indo-Pacific ‘Tilt' The world has many emerging powers, but India is probably the one with the greatest potential to shift the balance in the Indo-Pacific and, perhaps, the world over coming generations. Following independence, India forged a ‘non-aligned' path through the Cold War. For most of its history, its main security threat came from neighbouring Pakistan, with which it has fought a series of wars, and competed successfully in a race to acquire nuclear weapons. Today, it is the prospect that India might take a side in the great power competition between the USA and China that is drawing the attention of the world. India's gigantic population and skills base also makes it an attractive market and technology partner, not least for Britain, as the UK seeks to develop new economic relations after leaving the EU. The UK government's ‘Integrated Review' of March 2021 described India as “an international actor of growing importance” and states the ambition to transform the UK's cooperation with India “across the full range of our shared interests”. UK-India relations are framed by a mutually agreed roadmap to deepen bilateral ties by 2030 with the aim of developing a comprehensive strategic partnership. In this episode, host Neil Melvin is joined by Dr Walter Ladwig III of King's College London. Beyond what it offers the UK ‘tilt', the trajectory of India's rise appears certain to influence the outcome of military strategic rivalry, the evolution of global governance and the competition of different civilisational values. The question is ‘how?'.

Kumaraguru Ramanujam: Using Bitcoin SV to send money across borders

When Bitcoin was first invented, many hailed it as the solution to inefficient cross-border remittances. But because of the high fees associated with transactions on the Bitcoin Core network, it has never been able to live up to its full potential.  That's why Kumaraguru Ramanujam has chosen to build on the Bitcoin SV blockchain instead. His application, MoneySwipe, aims to bring down fees for sending money abroad from the current global average of 7 percent to just 1.5 percent.  He explains to Charles Miller on this week's episode of CoinGeek Conversations that the company is aiming to tackle the UK –India remittance corridor first. This makes a lot of sense as India tops the list of countries receiving personal remittances. According to a 2022 World Bank Report, a whopping $83 billion is sent back to the country each year in payments.    Ramanujam's plan is to work with regulators in India to create a cross-border payment solution without high costs. He explains that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set up a regulatory sandbox with the intention of finding companies using blockchain to bring efficiency to the billion-dollar remittance industry.  The sandbox originally opened in 2018, with a company using Hyperledger Fabric selected, but it has now reopened, and Ramanujam is keen to show the RBI the power of Bitcoin SV.  “We first show the regulator that BSV's better than Hyperledger then we show them, okay, yeah, transfer of value can also happen.”  The introduction of an efficient remittance system like this would be a gamechanger for the Indian economy. If costs could be brought down to 1.5 percent, this would mean over $4 billion could be saved and go straight to the recipient, instead of being lost in fees. This would also benefit the government as it would receive more foreign exchange reserves.  “It's a win-win and it's a stated aim of the United Nations' sustainability goals to bring remittances down from 7 percent to 3 percent,” Ramanujam points out.  While the application is powered by the Bitcoin SV blockchain, stablecoins have been enabled so they can be used as a bridge asset, to ensure liquidity and comply with regulation.   The final application, which will be launched by the end of the year, will be informed by how MoneySwipe engages with regulators. The hope is that by working closely with them, the final product will be innovative, relevant, and risk-free.  The focus for now is India and the corridor with the UK, but once this has been developed, he intends to turn his attention to other regulators to create remittance solutions that work with governments across the globe.  Ramanujam believes that being able to show experience working successfully with one regulator will make it easier with others.   "We want to work with the regulator who's open with their policies right now, rather than us telling them this is how things have to be done - so we are looking at countries that are open right now with sandboxes.”
