'Eight hours labor, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest' was the rallying cry of Robert Owen, a Welsh textile manufacturer turned labour reformer in the early 19th century.   For those toiling in factories, Owen's slogan was a socialist dream that only became commonplace in the early 20th century.  But, the 9 to 5 is still standard while technology has moved on - we have Artificial intelligence, automation, intuitive software at our fingertips. Shouldn't we be more productive while spending fewer hours at work?  To give us an insight into alternative models of working is Professor Brendan Burchell, a professor at the Faculty of Human, Social and Political science at the University of Cambridge and fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge who has been focusing on the effects of a 4 day working week for employers and employees. And also joining us is Professor Clare Kelliher from the Cranfield School of Management who has been spearheading research into flexible working.  Season 7 of the We Society Podcast from the Academy of Social Sciences continues to tackle the big questions through a social science lens. Throughout this series, you'll be hearing some of the best ideas to shape the way we live. Hosted by journalist and Academy President Will Hutton, we interview some of Britain's top social scientists and public figures from across the globe to explore their evidence-led solutions to society's most pressing problems. I'm joined by my special guest, Patrick Dunne, for an in-depth exploration of innovation and entrepreneurship in the boardroom.   Patrick Dunne is an experienced Chair with extensive experience of working with boards in Europe, Asia and North America. Currently Chair of board consultancy Boardelta, the charities The EY Foundation and ESSA- Education Sub Saharan Africa as well as Chair of the oversight board for the Chartered Management Consultant and trustee of the Chartered Management Institute. He's the author of the award-winning “Boards” and three other successful books on the subject and was a member of the Higgs Review. He also has extensive experience of developing social enterprises. In this episode, we delve into the common attributes shared by successful, innovative boards and outline strategies for nurturing these qualities.   Highlights from the Discussion Decoding Innovation: More than just inventing new products or processes, innovation embodies the creation of successful solutions that make a genuine impact. This often requires challenging conventional thinking and the willingness to pave new paths. Problem Identification and Evidence-Based Strategies: Innovative solutions are often born out of clearly identified and thoroughly understood problems. These solutions should be anchored in robust evidence and rigorous research, thus blending bright ideas with thorough testing and validation. Complacency and Over-Innovation in Boards: While complacency can curb innovation, an excess of innovation without realizing the value from existing products or services also carries risks. The optimal approach is to understand and exploit the lifecycle of your product or service, planning for the next growth phase before hitting a plateau. Encouraging Innovation through Diversity: Innovation can be fostered by integrating diverse viewpoints. The use of horizon boards or shadow boards, which include younger or non-board members, can introduce fresh insights and challenges. Understanding changing trends and diverse consumer behaviors is essential. Cultivating a Culture of Innovation: The goal is to nurture a culture that invites challenges, appreciates various skillsets, and values everyone's contribution. Hiring driven individuals, fostering a challenging and creative environment, and recognizing the importance of delivery-focused individuals can all contribute to a vibrant innovative culture. Self-Awareness in Board Members and Leaders: Leaders must be self-aware to make effective decisions, coordinate activities, and manage conflicts. Seeking feedback, reflecting on performance, observing, and learning from others, and having a good mentor or coach can significantly assist in this development. Practical tools like 360-degree feedback can be valuable when used correctly. Also, understanding the impact you have on others can be a powerful tool for self-awareness. Open conversations and genuine humility can help enhance this understanding. Traits for Aspiring Board Members and Leaders: To foster an innovative environment, leaders must be open-minded, promote curiosity, encourage diversity, stay updated about relevant trends, and view failures as learning opportunities. A blend of humility and confidence can also be particularly powerful. Building Confidence and Combining it with Humility: Confidence building can be achieved through self-awareness and a willingness to ask for feedback. Self-awareness should apply to both strengths and weaknesses. Over-interpreting or misinterpreting people's responses can sometimes hamper confidence. A focus on the outcome, rather than individual interactions, can help. Effectiveness and Pressure Management: There is a relationship between how effective people are and the pressure they're under. Delegating tasks appropriately and focusing on things that make a material difference can help maintain the right balance between effectiveness and pressure.   Our hope is that this episode offers valuable insights into promoting innovation within your organization. Being innovative isn't just about constant disruption; it's about fostering an environment where everyone feels enabled to contribute and create. It's about transforming the spark of an idea into a successful, valuable solution.   Patrick Dunne's Biography Experienced Chair with extensive experience of working with boards in Europe, Asia and North America. In the 1930's John Maynard Keynes predicted that, with automation and new ways of working, we'd all be working a 15 hour week. Many of us grew up being told that there would be more time for leisure. Yet, here we are, working as hard as ever. Except those who saw the pandemic as an opportunity to leave the workforce altogether. For many, we might be working harder, but spending more time working from home, without the drudgery of the daily commute. So, are we finding a new, more balanced way of working? How are companies adapting to this shift in behaviour? And are some of the fundamental issues of work, like bad management, ever going to shift. Phil and Roger have a barrage of questions for Clare Kelliher, Professor of Work and Organisation at Cranfield School of Management, Cranfield University, and author of several books on the subject, including ‘New Ways of Organising Work' and ‘Flexible Working In Organisations' Hosted on Acast. Many small businesses have struggled to recruit people in the last year, partly because fewer people are in employment than before the pandemic. It looks like one of the biggest risks for small businesses is that they will find it difficult to grow if they can't find enough staff. The government is encouraging older workers back to the office, after many took early retirement but are there are skilled workers, particularly those who want to work part time, who could also help? Making sense of this conundrum, our host - Steph McGovern - is joined by: Emma Saunders, a senior HR manager at Allianz Clare Kelliher, a professor of work and organisation at Cranfield School of Management Ann Francke, chief executive of the Chartered Management InstituteSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"I literally have the best job in the world," says Hari Ghotra, Global Food and Beverage Manager at Virgin Atlantic. "I get to travel a lot, meet some amazing chefs, and eat some incredible food." It's hard to argue with that assessment. If you love food and love travel, this is up there as one of the dream jobs. Added to that, Hari is also a hugely successful cook, author and entrepreneur, founding the biggest Indian food digital platform in the UK harighotra.co.uk Her book "Indian for Everyone: 100 Easy, Healthy Dishes the Whole Family Will Love" is proving extremely popular too. Hari's job at Virgin Atlantic sees her travelling all around the world, working with caterers, and trying to find the best food to serve in the air. She manages the menus on all inbound flights to the UK and goes to painstaking lengths to make sure that what is served meets the needs of the passengers and crew. There are certain challenges to serving 300 meals at 35,000-feet, not least the way our taste pallets change at altitude. There's also limited equipment to contend with on a plane, and the pure logistics of trying to serve hundreds of meals very quickly in a small space. Hari and her team go through hours and hours of testing to get the best results. "It is personal," she says. "The chefs that I work with take it personally if something they've created doesn't come across how they want it to be or if a customer isn't happy." Listen to the full episode to find out how she launched her own business, why she believes loving what you do is the key to success, and why certain wines taste better than others when you're in the air. Hari Ghotra, Global Food and Beverage Manager, Virgin Atlantic Hari Ghotra's website and social platforms feature hundreds of easy to follow recipes, videos, articles and live weekly cooking sessions that attract a global audience. Her community App is a real time location with a thriving community of food lovers who share pictures and ideas, it's a place Hari communicates with her followers daily. She is also the global food and beverage manager for Virgin Atlantic where she manages a number of separate catering units across the world. The catering units are responsible for producing the in flight food for the airline for flights returning to the UK. The role includes managing the Virgin Atlantic food proposition for each of the cabins, the equipment the food is served on, food safety, budget as well as managing the day to day issues. Having trained as a Biologist at the University of Bath she went on to work for Unilever as a food microbiologist. Hari went on to undertake a Masters in Marketing management for food and drinks related industries at Cranfield School of Management and secured a position on the Tesco graduate training scheme. After 14 years with Tesco PLC working in a number of different disciplines, she went on to create her food business Hari Ghotra. She then trained at Michelin-starred Tamarind of Mayfair to understand the restaurant world and now contributes to many publications, creates engaging online content and works with many different brands. Raised in an environment where food played a central role in family life, Hari learned to cook amazing dishes from her mother. Hari quickly understood the difficulty people feel when preparing Indian food at home so continues her work to be the conduit between cookbooks, TV and actually cooking with you, in your home, through her digital presence.

Even if you have the best product or service, it's not possible to grow your business with a poor sales strategy. To be able to carry your business abroad, you need to learn the culture, traditions, politics and lifestyle of the target culture and apply it to your business strategy through sales. BEST MOMENTS “The best salespeople are those who are genuine, authentic, and know about the topic.” "We are all trying to get the governments to take sales more seriously and the world to take sales more seriously and part of that is through SMAa, which is the smallest part involved." "You can take a great product abroad but if you don't get the culture aligned correctly, at best it's funny and at worst it's offensive to the target culture." "Digitally speaking, companies have no excuse not to be international from day one. If you look at some of the large, billion-dollar companies such as Facebook or Google, you'll see that they are international right off the bat. Partly because they can be, because their service can be delivered digitally. But partly because they've embraced localization." Martin Reeves is the Managing Director and Senior Partner at Boston Consulting Group's San Francisco office. With over 30 years of experience in consulting, Reeves specializes in business strategy management and idea origination and development. He is also the Chairman of the BCG Henderson Institute, BCG's think tank and laboratory. Reeves is the co-author of multiple books, including Your Strategy Needs a Strategy and his most recent release, The Imagination Machine. He has a triple first-class MA in natural sciences from Cambridge University and an MBA from Cranfield School of Management. In this episode: How does an enterprise turn innovation from a one-time thing into a sustained part of its business model and culture? Most businesses begin with a creative spark; a few manage to be innovative over years or decades. But only a handful have managed to keep sparking for decades. One of those is the Boston Consulting Group. Long admired as the most innovative of the great strategy consultants, BCG has kept new ideas coming for more than half a century.  How? To find out, Tom Stewart sat down with Martin Reeves, a senior partner of BCG who runs the firm's Henderson Institute, the internal think tank named for founder Bruce Henderson. A leading strategist and thinker about strategy — Reeves's books include The Imagination Machine and Your Strategy Needs a Strategy — Reeves talks about how probing anomalies and analogies can uncover new ideas, the importance of cognitive and intellectual diversity, and how a company can truly encourage the kind of maverick thinking that is necessary for a sustained culture of new ideas. Reeves also identifies five innovation killers, guaranteed to smother creativity in its crib, and offers his list of five companies that have developed what he calls “complexity pruning mechanisms” — organizational policies that help cut back the vines that can choke innovation as companies get big. Along the way, Reeves takes us on a virtual tour of BCG's “Napkin Gallery,” an online collection of the actual first visualizations of great business ideas — some of them, yes, actually drawn on napkins. Martin Reeves talks about this and more as he joins Thomas A. Stewart on The Leading Edge — a place where new ideas emerge and are sharpened, and where leaders look to find the edge that brings success for themselves, their teams, and their enterprises. In this episode of The Leading Edge, Thomas A. Stewart sits down with the Managing Director and Senior Partner at BCG, Martin Reeves, to talk about nurturing innovation and creativity in business. Together, they discuss the importance of cognitive and intellectual diversity in the workplace, how to develop new and valuable business ideas, and the BCG approach to problem-solving. Stay tuned.

Lucinda is joined by special guest Perry Timms, founder and Chief Energy Officer of PTHR, for a timely conversation about the topic of energy and how we can invigorate and maintain the energy in our teams. Essentially, so that we can better face the challenges of the year ahead with an energised workplace!  KEY TAKEAWAYS Certainly, learning is a wonderful source of energy. We feel a sense of dynamic invigoration when we develop - almost like levelling up. It's not about fixing people. We should be seeking to fix the system itself. Thus enabling a trickling down of energy that invigorates our workforce. Energy begins with freedom. Indeed, many feel trapped in their job or their workplace. Furthermore, invigoration comes through granting people a sense of freedom, by dismantling barriers and encouraging imagination. Indeed, we sometimes waste the talents of a person by slotting them into roles that do not make full use of that talent. Therefore, we should always seek to tailor the person to the role. 'Energy is a premium resource' 'Most people are caged in their work' 'When we acquire new skills, when we force our self into new frontiers, our energy raises' 'There's a thing called the IKEA effect where you love what you build - that's what I want to see people do more'  VALUABLE RESOURCES The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher   Host of The HR Uprising Podcast, Lucinda Carney, is also the founder and CEO of Actus Software, where you can find additional free HR Resources: https://actus.co.uk/free-performance-management-resources/ The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group 5 Steps to Boost Employee Energy - Actus Software Virtual Training: How to be a Change Superhero Virtual People Management Accelerate Potential Change Superhero Resources: Book: How To Be A Change Superhero – by Lucinda Carney Free Change Toolkit: www.changesuperhero.com How to Prioritise Self-Care (The HR Uprising) Latest Performance Management Blog ABOUT THE GUEST Perry Timms is the founder and Chief Energy Officer of PTHR - an 8-person global consultancy, setting out to create better business for a better world. If you are a GrowCFO member you will most likely have come across Patrick Dunne already. When is comes to boards, and how they work, Patrick is pretty much the leading authority. Inside GrowCFO, Patrick frequently talks about the dynamics between the CEO, the CFO and the board. But today we find out about Patrick Dunne the person. He tells me about his career, and why he wrote the book "Boards: A Practical Perspective" Who is Patrick Dunne? Patrick has very humble roots. He hails from Toxteth in Liverpool. He is one of 6 children of an Irish immigrant family. None the less, he got a place at university to read maths, and this led to a very successful career. His executive career started in Chemicals, but he made his name in Private Equity. Patrick's career eventually took him to the Operating Committee of FTSE100 3i Group plc. These days Patrick Dunne owns and runs Boardelta which advises boards around the world. Since retiring from 3i in 2012 he devotes a good deal of time to charitable causes. He is passionate about education in Africa. Patrick is Chair the EY Foundation; ESSA-Education Sub Saharan Africa;. and he is the founder of Warwick in Africa. He serves on the Board of the Chartered Management Institute. He is a Visiting Professor at Cranfield School of Management; a visiting Fellow at Warwick Business School as well as the author of "Boards". Boards: A Practical Perspective Boards provides a practical, realistic, thought-provoking and useful guide to life as a board member. It is split into three areas, 'Purpose', 'People' and 'Process' reflecting the three key areas of concern for any board. We go into these in more detail in the podcast. A fourth section sets out a series of real life dilemmas for readers to practice on. The book is an ideal companion for anyone who is an aspirant, novice or seasoned board member. This makes it great reading for any future CFO. Patrick draws on his extensive range of experience working with and on boards in many sectors, in the UK and internationally. The book is equally applicable to business, charities and social enterprises, professional services firms, public bodies and universities. The book is also written in a highly accessible and engaging style. Patrick's aim is for the book to be practical and to be read by board members. It isn't an academic tome, instead it brings life and fun to what is a very serious topic The CFO and the Board Patrick sees the CFO as one of the most important people on the board. While the CEO runs the executive team and the chair runs the board, the CFO is often the glue that holds it all together. Patrick sees the role of the board and the executive team in the form of a Venn diagram. The two cant be separate, nor can they overlap too much. Want to find out more about Patrick's view on the role of the CFO on the board? Then why not join GrowCFO today?

How to be a great project leader

In this episode, our topic is how to be a great project leader. We pin down exactly what it means to lead a project and how this role is evolving to reflect the changing nature of projects and obviously in 2020, the pressures of the Covid pandemic. In this podcast, host Emma De Vita, editor of Project journal, asks how a project leader needs to behave to be highly effective, and what mindset you need to thrive in this role. APM's 7th edition of its Body of Knowledge defines project leadership as: providing vision, direction, feedback and support so people can do their best work. And to do this in an environment of change and uncertainty. Project leadership is usually performed with limits on a project leader's power requiring them to adopt a style that builds team and wider stakeholder commitment. Our panel discusses in-depth what this definition means in practice, giving lots of advice on how you can become a better project leader, particularly during these challenging times. On the panel are: Gordon MacKay, project management capability lead at Sellafield and author of a forthcoming book on project leadership for APM. Mike Bourne, professor of business performance, action, execution and implementation at Cranfield School of Management. Claire Fryer, director of behavioural management and executive coach at Costain.

When the crisis first hit, many companies realized that their best strategy was to circle the wagons, focusing on existing customers and key accounts. Some of these key accounts are at risk, with many facing budget lockdowns, cutbacks and pressure to consolidate vendors. Others are not cutting back, but accelerating business and digital transformations. How do you make sure you don’t end up in the discount bin or the chopping block, evolving from being tactical to being more strategic and capturing new opportunities? These are just a couple of questions we pose to two key members from the Key Account Management Forum, a research group from the Cranfield School of Management: Dr Javier Marcos Cuevas and Mark Davies.
