Jeannette talks to Julia Simpson, the president and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Julia shares her unique journey to her current role, highlighting her extensive experience in both government and the corporate sector, including her time as an advisor to former Prime Minister Tony Blair. They also talk about the importance of understanding the interplay between government and business, especially in the volatile travel and tourism industry. Julia discusses the WTTC's significant impact on the global economy, representing one in ten jobs worldwide, and emphasises the need for a unified voice for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the sector. Together with Finn Partners, WTTC is launching in October a community for the global SME market called Together in Travel. As the voice of the global travel private sector WTTC wants to make sure the voice of the SME is heard loud and clear. This will be a dynamic and free-to-subscribe community with lots of useful content and will focus on empowering these businesses by facilitating meaningful connections, providing valuable insights, and offering tailored learning programs to help them thrive in a competitive market. Together in Travel Pre-registration form: https://form.typeform.com/to/eVF3u89X KEY TAKEAWAYS Resilience is crucial in both government and corporate sectors, as leaders often face numerous challenges and setbacks. Embracing failures and learning from them can lead to stronger leadership. Understanding the dynamics between government and the private sector is essential for effective advocacy in travel and tourism. Leaders must navigate the differing timeframes and priorities of both sectors to create meaningful partnerships. The travel and tourism industry must leverage data and AI to enhance operations and customer experiences. Leaders should take ownership of AI initiatives to drive innovation and efficiency within their organisations. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to the travel and tourism sector, representing 80% of the industry. Initiatives like "Together in Travel" aim to amplify their voices and provide resources for growth and resilience. As the travel and tourism sector grows, it is essential to prioritise sustainability and responsible growth. Leaders should advocate for practices that protect the environment and support local communities, ensuring a positive impact on society. In this episode, we focus on mediation. Brick Court Chambers is home to many of the UK's – indeed the world's – most highly-regarded mediators. As mediation has taken on a more prominent role in commercial litigation, so Brick Court's mediation practice has grown alongside it. For this podcast, we brought together four of the busiest and best known – Sue Prevezer QC, Stephen Ruttle QC, Tony Willis and Bill Wood QC – to chat about the past, present and future of mediation. Their discussion ranged widely, as one would expect, and covered topics such as working as a mediator within a barristers chambers, the relationship of the bar with mediation and the role that mediation could and should play in resolving disputes. Bill Wood QC Bill Wood chairs the programme. A leading commercial QC, Bill trained as a mediator in 1999. He was awarded Mediator of the Year 2018 and is ranked #1 Mediation Silk 2019 in WWL's UK Bar Guide. He is consistently ranked in the top tiers by Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners. Stephen Ruttle QC Stephen has been in practice at Brick Court Chambers since 1978. He stopped practising as a barrister and QC in 2002 and since then has worked full time as a commercial mediator. For many years he has been rated as one of the leading mediators in the UK. Stephen is also the founder director and chair of Wandsworth Mediation Service. Tony Willis Tony is a commercial mediation pioneer, among the first to be trained in 1990, among the first to mediate regularly and then, in 1998, among the first to launch his own independent practice as a full time commercial mediator as the Woolf Reforms to Civil Justice were about to take effect. His background as a litigation partner in Clifford Chance for more than 25 years gave him the experience and standing to undertake a wide range of commercial matters. Tony joined Chambers as a full-time mediator in 2004. Sue Prevezer QC After 25 years in practice, including 8 years in silk, Sue was the co-managing partner of Quinn Emanuel in London from its inception in 2008 to January 2020 Sue decided to come back to the Bar, joining Brick Court in April 2020 to practise as an arbitrator, mediator and consultant. Sue is an accredited CEDR mediator, a Civil Mediation Council registered mediator, a mediator on the for the Court of Arbitration for Art Panel and a member of the London Chamber of Arbitration and Mediation panel of mediators. Talks on Entrepreneurial Leadership at London Business School - TELL Series
Ever wondered what it’s like to start a beer company in your 20s, export to 50 countries and reach an annual retail turnover of £178 million? (and get knighted in the process too). Join TELL Series on Wednesday 20 April in welcoming Lord Karan Bilimoria, founder of Cobra Beer. Karan founded Cobra at 27 when he was a Cambridge law graduate with £20,000 in student debts. He delivered beer in an old Citroen 2CV, while his friends worked for the likes of the Goldman Sachs. Since then, Cobra has become one of the fastest growing beer brands with offices in 4 continents, serving 50 countries. Within the UK alone, Cobra has a current retail value turnover of £178 million, is sold in nearly 6,000 bars, pubs and clubs and in over 12,000 branches of supermarkets and off-licenses throughout the UK. Cobra Beer also went through its trials and tribulations. Karan almost lost the brand several times in the past years, especially during the 2008 financial crisis when Cobra lost out on key investments. Ever the undeterred entrepreneur, Karan persevered and Cobra has been on a roaring comeback ever since. Competing against brands that are centuries old, Cobra has become a household name in less than two decades. Cobra beer has won numerous accolades and Karan himself was appointed as a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2004. He also won EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003 and Business Person of the Year by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2004. In 2006, Karan was appointed The Lord Bilimoria, of Chelsea. His talk at London Business School is part of the 2015-2016 Tell Series talks and it was recorded on 20 April 2016 at London Business School.
