Crina Mustafa, basketball and tennis content creator, comes over to Tennis and Bagels Podcast to chat (and cheer) with Andre about Canada's history-making moment with the Billie Jean King Cup title in Seville.Leylah Annie Fernandez, the 21-year-old dynamo who's been making waves since her epic run to the 2021 US Open final, took on the role of leader of the Canadian team despite her young age, and did not disappoint. She went undefeated in 2023 in Billie Jean King Cup competition in both singles and double combined, making it a total of 8-0 for the year. After tough matches and near-misses, Fernandez fended off Ysaline Bonaventure in the Vancouver qualifiers in April after being a set and a break down to send Canada to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals stage. There, her way was no simpler, having to go down the trenches against Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in a three-hour, two-tiebreak battle, then getting her first top 10 win against Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova of Czechia in three sets in the semi-finals. Against Italy, the title was sealed with a straight-forward win over Jasmine Paolini.Another young star seems to be being born in Canadian tennis, as Marina Stakusic left her mark in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. The 18-year-old, who has done incredibly well in the ITF World Tennis Tour, coming off of a win at the Tevlin Challenger in Toronto, lost only one match the whole week, going down against former Roland Garros champion and former World No. 2 in two sets, but winning every other match against players much higher ranked than her. Her incredible performance gave Canada the courage and belief necessary to go all the way, as Stakusic also went relatively untroubled against former Roland Garros semifinalist Martina Trevisan in the first singles against Italy.Rounding up the team, US Open women's doubles champion Gaby Dabrowski partnered up with Fernandez in the critical match against Czechia to defeat multiple Grand Slam champions Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova to send Canada to the final.Rebecca Marino and Genie Bouchard also left their hearts on the court, with Bouchard taking on to the court in doubles. At the end of it all, Heidi El Tabakh also got her much awaited and deserved triumph with Team Canada as the team captain. The cheerful, but calm and focused captain's actions and critical decision making led Canada to be at its optimal state to finally lift the coveted trophy for the first time in the competition's history.Talk to us on social media :)Follow Crina Mustafa!Twitter: @crinammFollow Tennis and Bagels: Twitter @TennisAndBAGELSAndre Rolemberg @RolembergAndreVansh Vermani @vanshv2kOwen Lewis @tennisnationCheck out Popcorn Tennis!Twitter: @Popcorn_Tennis1Website: popcorntennis.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels. Crina Mustafa is a sports media student, but already a vet in the game! An expert in tennis and basketball who loves covering the women's game of each, you have seen her EVERYWHERE, particularly if you live in Canada! But how did she get to where she is today? Crina tells me how Jose Calderon and Simona Halep planted the seeds for her love of sports, and how legendary sports broadcaster Kate Beirness showed her that she could cover sports too!  We get Crina's analysis of the environment for women in sports media in Canada and also some great tips for building a portfolio quickly while you're still in school! Also, being on-camera isn't easy for a lot of us, so what helped Crina build up the confidence to overcome her own shyness to do so? Also, it's crucial to build up your own personal brand in this industry, which means using social media. How was Crina able to build up her social media to the point where media outlets were reaching out to her to come work for them while also maintaining healthy boundaries with all the negativity that is on these social media platforms?  We also go over the joy Crina felt at seeing the reception the WNBA got in Canada, the decision she made to take control over her content that led to her starting “Cri's on Point,” and why she considers it a privilege to cover women's sports! It's that time of year again! The world's oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament is about to start, but what if you've been in mourning since Serena Williams retired and haven't been paying attention like you should? Crina Mustafa of “Cri's on Point” has got you covered! Crina stops by to let us know what's so special about the sport of tennis and all that is Wimbledon! Then, she goes over her power rankings on the men's and women's sides. Is Novak Djokovic a favorite once again, a robot, or both? She'll let us know! We also look back at past tennis stars who were underappreciated as well as past traditions that tennis held on to for too long! Crina also breaks down some tennis basics for the new or casual fan, such as differences in playing surface, why some crowds are lit while others aren't, and the value of playing doubles! Tennis expert? Crina's got you covered there too as she discusses some of the finer points of the game along with analysis on what to expect from some of the top players, like phenoms Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek, headed into the tournament, and some thoughts on whether Americans Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Francis Tiafoe can make some noise! In Episode 1398, Sean Woodley is joined by Crina Mustafa (Homestand Sports, Enjoy BBall) to talk about the Toronto Raptors reported pursuit of Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon, the WNBA's potential expansion to Toronto, and the WNBA Canada Exhibition game between the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx going down this Saturday at Scotiabank Arena. Off the top, Sean and Crina discuss why the Raptors likely will not land Becky Hammon to be their head coach, partly due to timing, and largely due to the Raptors simply not offering a more attractive situation than coaching the defending WNBA champions. Next, they dig into the WNBA's potential expansion to Toronto, the issues that are ratcheting up the calls for more teams in the W, and why Toronto is a no-brainer destination for a new team. Lastly, Sean and Crina tee up Sky vs. Lynx in Toronto this Saturday, pinpoint key players to watch, and preview the new WNBA regular season which is just days away from tip-off.Be sure to join the Locked On Raptors Discord community to come hang out and talk ball with other listeners of the show! https://discord.gg/bTWbKK4QSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. Off the top, they dig into VanVleet ascension to All-Star status, and the improvements in his mid-range, at-the-rim and overall floor game that helped get him there as the clear best player on the Raptors during the early parts of the season. Next, Sean and Crina discuss the nagging knee and hip injuries that kept Fred from being anywhere close to 100% after the All-Star break, the statistical drop-off he experienced, and whether injuries were fully to blame for his diminished play after the February break. Plus, they dig into how the Raptors to work to prevent similar issues from popping up for VanVleet going into next season. Lastly, Sean and Crina run through their favourite FVV stats and plays of the year before looking ahead to 2022-23. Will VanVleet repeat as an All-Star? Host Chris Walder (@WalderSports) invites Crina Mustafa (@crinamm), a writer, podcaster, and social media manager for the likes of Unbenched Sports, Raptors Cage, and many other outlets, onto the program. The two discuss Raptors Twitter becoming massive fans of Gary Trent Jr. almost immediately following the team acquiring him from the Portland Trail Blazers, what the all-female team at Unbenched hopes to achieve and promote with their work, being a young female college student with aspirations of making it big in sports media, what the all-female Raptors broadcast meant to her, who she idolizes in sports media, and what her long-term goals are. They also discuss Fred VanVleet's tweet praising former teammate Terence Davis and why he was forced to delete it, if Crina believes someone like Davis can be reformed, if basketball journalists should use statistics in stories involving domestic abuse or something similar, and more. Crina also gives her thoughts on whether the Raptors should consider going for a high draft pick over a playoff berth, the recent fines and suspensions following Toronto's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the team possibly bringing aboard Khem Birch, and more. And in her final rapid-fire questioning, Crina defends jelly-filled Timbits, bashes "The Office," talks her former job as a karate instructor, describes the perfect Kyle Lowry statue, shoots her shot for podcast guests, and much more.
