PALERMO (ITALPRESS) - La 35esima edizione del Palermo Ladies Open (Wta 250) prende forma con un tabellone di partecipanti di grande prestigio: da Elina Svitolina a Laura Badosa, da Sara Errani a Elisabetta Cocciaretto. L'entry list del torneo è stata resa nota al Country Club di Palermo dal presidente del circolo Giorgio Cammarata e dal direttore della manifestazione Oliviero Palma. She went undefeated in 2023 in Billie Jean King Cup competition in both singles and double combined, making it a total of 8-0 for the year. After tough matches and near-misses, Fernandez fended off Ysaline Bonaventure in the Vancouver qualifiers in April after being a set and a break down to send Canada to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals stage. There, her way was no simpler, having to go down the trenches against Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in a three-hour, two-tiebreak battle, then getting her first top 10 win against Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova of Czechia in three sets in the semi-finals. Against Italy, the title was sealed with a straight-forward win over Jasmine Paolini.Another young star seems to be being born in Canadian tennis, as Marina Stakusic left her mark in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. The 18-year-old, who has done incredibly well in the ITF World Tennis Tour, coming off of a win at the Tevlin Challenger in Toronto, lost only one match the whole week, going down against former Roland Garros champion and former World No. 2 in two sets, but winning every other match against players much higher ranked than her. Cameron’s 416-foot shot to left-center came off Emilio Pagan. Alex Lange gave up two walks and struck out one in the pivotal eighth inning and Gregory Soto earned his 10th save. AL Central-leading Minnesota has lost seven of 10 games and is still the division’s only team with a winning record. The fourth-place Tigers have won seven of their last nine games after a poor start this season. Blue Jays 8 White Sox 3 – Manoah sharp as Blue Jays beat White Sox, win 8th straight Alek Manoah pitched into the eighth inning, Teoscar Hernández homered and the Toronto Blue Jays extended their winning streak to eight games by beating the Chicago White Sox 8-3. Santiago Espinal had three hits and three RBIs as the surging Blue Jays won for the 12th time in 15 games. Chicago was swept in the three-game series and has lost six of eight. Manoah allowed three runs and six hits, walked one and struck out five in 7 2/3 innings. He’s 9-0 with a 2.12 ERA in 13 career home starts. Cubs 7, Cardinals 5 – Schwindel, Contreras and Happ homer as Cubs top Cards 7-5 Frank Schwindel launched a long solo homer and doubled among his three hits and the Chicago Cubs topped the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 for their third straight victory. Willson Contreras went deep for the third time in four games and Ian Happ also homered to help Chicago end the Cardinals’ three-game winning streak. St. Louis has also won five in a row at Wrigley Field dating to last July. Paul Goldschmidt doubled to extend his hitting streak to 24 games and reached safely for a career-best 38th consecutive game. Horford finished with 26 points and the Celtics outscored the Warriors 40-16 in the final 12 minutes after trailing by 15 points late in the third quarter. Boston made its first seven tries from long distance in the fourth and wound up 9 of 12 beyond the arc over the final 12 minutes as almost everybody got involved in the 3-point flurry. NBA – Silver says NBA likes ‘parity of opportunity’ for its teams Over the last three seasons, six franchises have reached the NBA Finals. The league has seen five Eastern Conference champions in the last five seasons. This will be the fourth consecutive year that the team which hoists the trophy won’t be the same as the one who did the year before. Adam Silver likes all these numbers. The NBA Commissioner, in his annual pre-NBA Finals address Thursday night held just before Game 1 of the series between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics, repeated his familiar refrain that he doesn’t care who wins. The Avalanche broke through in the second after a scoreless opening period that featured something rarely seen so far in this series — defense. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Chicago Sky at Atlanta Dream, 7:30 p.m. WNBA – Griner receiving, answering WNBA players’ emails Brittney Griner has been able to receive emails and letters from WNBA players through an account Griner’s agent set up to allow them to communicate with her.  The emails are printed out and delivered sporadically in bunches to Griner by her lawyers after being vetted by Russian officials. Griner doesn’t have access to email. She’ll either write a response on paper and her lawyers will take a photo of it or she’ll dictate a response.  The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been detained in Russia for more than 100 days after vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis were allegedly found in her luggage at an airport near Moscow. Tennis – French Open – Gauff to face Swiatek in final It will be top-ranked Iga Swiatek against American Coco Gauff for the French Open women’s singles title on Saturday. Swiatek won her 34th straight match today, dominating Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-1. Gauff has reached her first Grand Slam final by beating Martina Trevisan of Italy 6-3, 6-1. NCAAFB – CFP board chair: New format ideally in place by June 2023 The university leaders who oversee the College Football Playoff want the next format for determining a champion settled by this time next year. Mississippi State President Mark Keenum says the conference commissioners in charge of building the postseason system for the 2026 season and beyond will restart the task in the coming weeks. Keenum is the chairman of the CFP board of managers. He added that he intends to meet with his fellow presidents and chancellors in August to discuss what comes next for the playoff. An attempt to expand the playoff from the current four-team format to 12 teams before the current 12-year contract with ESPN expires after the 2025 season fell apart last fall. NCAA – Roger Valdiserri, Notre Dame SID for 3 decades, dies at 95 Roger Valdiserri, who helped tell the story of some of Notre Dame’s greatest football teams as the school’s sports information director for three decades, has died. He was 95. Valdiserri’s family says he died of natural causes at a retirement community outside Chicago. The family said he was surrounded by his five children at the time of his death. Valdiserri was a native of Pennsylvania who graduated from Notre Dame in 1954. His first job at the school was an administrative assistant for football coaches Frank Leahy and Terry Brennan. He took over as the school’s sports information director in 1966 under coach Ara Parseghian. Notre Dame won the first of four national titles in football during Valdiserri’s tenure that season. NBAGL – NBA G League – Grand Rapids Gold moving to Van Andel Arena One month after officials decided that the DeltaPlex Arena will close, the Grand Rapids Gold of the NBA G-League have had to search for a new home venue.  The team will move to the downtown Van Andel Arena starting this upcoming season.  Van Andel Arena is the 4th largest arena in the state of Michigan and is currently the home of the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, who are the Detroit Red Wings primary affiliate.  Van Andel Arena holds just under 11,000 for hockey, and 11, 500 for basketball.  The Gold, who are the affiliated of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, won’t be the first professional basketball team to call Van Andel Arena home, the Grand Rapids Hoops of the now defunct CBA played there from 1996-2001.  The 2001 Big Ten Women’s Basketball tournament was also held at Van Andel Arena. NCAA – Roger Valdiserri, Notre Dame SID for 3 decades, dies at 95 Roger Valdiserri, who helped tell the story of some of Notre Dame’s greatest football teams as the school’s sports information director for three decades, has died. He was 95. Valdiserri’s family says he died of natural causes at a retirement community outside Chicago. The family said he was surrounded by his five children at the time of his death. Valdiserri was a native of Pennsylvania who graduated from Notre Dame in 1954. His first job at the school was an administrative assistant for football coaches Frank Leahy and Terry Brennan. He took over as the school’s sports information director in 1966 under coach Ara Parseghian. Notre Dame won the first of four national titles in football during Valdiserri’s tenure that season. NBAGL – NBA G League – Grand Rapids Gold moving to Van Andel Arena One month after officials decided that the DeltaPlex Arena will close, the Grand Rapids Gold of the NBA G-League have had to search for a new home venue.  The team will move to the downtown Van Andel Arena starting this upcoming season.  Van Andel Arena is the 4th largest arena in the state of Michigan and is currently the home of the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, who are the Detroit Red Wings primary affiliate.  Van Andel Arena holds just under 11,000 for hockey, and 11, 500 for basketball.  The Gold, who are the affiliated of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, won’t be the first professional basketball team to call Van Andel Arena home, the Grand Rapids Hoops of the now defunct CBA played there from 1996-2001.  The 2001 Big Ten Women’s Basketball tournament was also held at Van Andel Arena. Horford finished with 26 points and the Celtics outscored the Warriors 40-16 in the final 12 minutes after trailing by 15 points late in the third quarter. NCAAFB – CFP board chair: New format ideally in place by June 2023 The university leaders who oversee the College Football Playoff want the next format for determining a champion settled by this time next year. Mississippi State President Mark Keenum says the conference commissioners in charge of building the postseason system for the 2026 season and beyond will restart the task in the coming weeks. Keenum is the chairman of the CFP board of managers. He added that he intends to meet with his fellow presidents and chancellors in August to discuss what comes next for the playoff. An attempt to expand the playoff from the current four-team format to 12 teams before the current 12-year contract with ESPN expires after the 2025 season fell apart last fall. NCAA – Roger Valdiserri, Notre Dame SID for 3 decades, dies at 95 Roger Valdiserri, who helped tell the story of some of Notre Dame’s greatest football teams as the school’s sports information director for three decades, has died. He was 95. Valdiserri’s family says he died of natural causes at a retirement community outside Chicago. The family said he was surrounded by his five children at the time of his death. Valdiserri was a native of Pennsylvania who graduated from Notre Dame in 1954. His first job at the school was an administrative assistant for football coaches Frank Leahy and Terry Brennan. He took over as the school’s sports information director in 1966 under coach Ara Parseghian. Notre Dame won the first of four national titles in football during Valdiserri’s tenure that season. NBAGL – NBA G League – Grand Rapids Gold moving to Van Andel Arena One month after officials decided that the DeltaPlex Arena will close, the Grand Rapids Gold of the NBA G-League have had to search for a new home venue.  The team will move to the downtown Van Andel Arena starting this upcoming season.  Van Andel Arena is the 4th largest arena in the state of Michigan and is currently the home of the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, who are the Detroit Red Wings primary affiliate.  Van Andel Arena holds just under 11,000 for hockey, and 11, 500 for basketball.  The Gold, who are the affiliated of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, won’t be the first professional basketball team to call Van Andel Arena home, the Grand Rapids Hoops of the now defunct CBA played there from 1996-2001.  The 2001 Big Ten Women’s Basketball tournament was also held at Van Andel Arena. NCAA – Roger Valdiserri, Notre Dame SID for 3 decades, dies at 95 Roger Valdiserri, who helped tell the story of some of Notre Dame’s greatest football teams as the school’s sports information director for three decades, has died. He was 95. Valdiserri’s family says he died of natural causes at a retirement community outside Chicago. The family said he was surrounded by his five children at the time of his death. Valdiserri was a native of Pennsylvania who graduated from Notre Dame in 1954. His first job at the school was an administrative assistant for football coaches Frank Leahy and Terry Brennan. He took over as the school’s sports information director in 1966 under coach Ara Parseghian. Notre Dame won the first of four national titles in football during Valdiserri’s tenure that season. NBAGL – NBA G League – Grand Rapids Gold moving to Van Andel Arena One month after officials decided that the DeltaPlex Arena will close, the Grand Rapids Gold of the NBA G-League have had to search for a new home venue.  The team will move to the downtown Van Andel Arena starting this upcoming season.  Van Andel Arena is the 4th largest arena in the state of Michigan and is currently the home of the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, who are the Detroit Red Wings primary affiliate.  Van Andel Arena holds just under 11,000 for hockey, and 11, 500 for basketball.  The Gold, who are the affiliated of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, won’t be the first professional basketball team to call Van Andel Arena home, the Grand Rapids Hoops of the now defunct CBA played there from 1996-2001.  The 2001 Big Ten Women’s Basketball tournament was also held at Van Andel Arena. Willkommen zur neuen Ausgabe von Chip & Charge dieses Mal mit der achten Sendung von den French Open 2022. Am zweiten Donnerstag stand das Halbfinale bei den Damen auf dem Programm. Die beiden Siegerinnen, Iga Swiatek und Coco Gauff, werden am Samstag das Finale bestreiten. Swiatek setzte sich in zwei Sätzen gegen Daria Kasatkina durch und Gauff brauchte ebenfalls zwei Sätze gegen Martina Trevisan. Der große Unterschied zwischen Swiatek und Kasatkina war der Aufschlag der beiden Spielerinnen. Kasatkina geriet bei ihrem Serve permanent unter Druck durch die wohl beste Return-Spielerin auf der Tour. Kasatkina im Gegenzug, die selber über einen hervorragenden Return verfügt, konnte sich bei weitem nicht so häufig in die Aufschlagsspiele von Swiatek hereinarbeiten. Da halfen ihr auch der Vorhand-Topspin und Sicherheit von der Grundlinie nicht. Swiatek hat ihren Siegeslauf damit auf 36 Matches ausgebaut und hat am Samstag die Chance zum zweiten Mal in ihrer noch sehr jungen Karriere die French Open zu gewinnen. Ihre Gegnerin wird dabei Coco Gauff sein, die mit ihrem Sieg gegen Trevisan eine Premiere feiern konnte. La polaca se ha impuesto en Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart y Roma y va camino de volver a ganar en el polvo de ladrillo de París como hizo en 2020. Se consolida como la mejor tenista del momento a tan sólo 21 años, que por cierto cumplió este martes. “Es el partido más sólido que he jugado. Estoy feliz con mi prestación. Me concentré mucho y no le dejé ninguna posibilidad a Jessica de remontar. Estoy muy contenta”, dijo tras su victoria. “Iga está cogiendo una muy buena línea y parece que va a estar allí mucho tiempo. Se la ve muy convencida y con las ideas muy claras, ahora mismo es la referente, ¿cuánto tiempo va a durar? Es imposible de saber”, analiza el ex tenista español Alex Corretja quien destaca tanto su alto nivel de tenis como su fuerza mental. Además, se han programado nueve partidos de chicos y solo uno de chicas por cuestiones de interés del público, según dijo la directora del Roland Garros, la extenista francesa Amélie Mauresmo quien ha dejado en el aire continuar haciéndolas el año próximo. Una sesiones nocturnas que necesitan de un ticket aparte, no vale el del día y cuya difusión en la television es de pago. “Está claro que el horario de los partidos de la noche puede cuestionarse. Es un aspecto que tendremos que ver, tendremos que hacer un balance al final del torneo. Während sich dabei viel auf die Herren konzentrierte, beginnen Andreas und Philipp bei den Damen. Dort konnten sich sowohl Coco Gauff als auch Martina Trevisan erstmals für das Halbfinale eines Grand Slam Turniers qualifizieren. Den Anfang machte dabei Trevisan, die in drei Sätzen gegen Leylah Fernandez gewann. Fernandez hatte Probleme mit dem Fuß und kämpfte sich trotzdem durch alle drei Durchgänge. Da Fernandez nicht nur teils zu schnell die Entscheidungen suchte bzw. suchen musste, sondern auch Probleme mit dem Return hatte, servierte Trevisan schon auf das Match. Doch Trevisan zeigte Nerven und musste eine Ehrenrunde über den dritten Satz ziehen. Leichter fiel es Coco Gauff, ihr Match gegen Sloane Stephens über die Ziellinie zu bringen. Gauff entpuppte sich als zu solide, als dass Stephens sich nur auf ihre Defensive verlassen konnte. Doch in der Offensive unterliefen Stephens zu viele Fehler und so gewann Gauff schließlich in zwei Sätzen. Trevisan konnte das einzige bisherige Duell der beiden Spielerinnen gewinnen, hier in Roland Garros im Jahr 2020 mit 7:5 im dritten Satz. Nachtschicht bei Nadal und Djokovic Bei den Herren konnte sich Alexander Zverev abermals für das Halbfinale qualifizieren, und dass durch einen Sieg gegen den Formspieler der letzten Monate, Carlos Alcaraz. In einem teils sehr unterhaltsamen Match behielt Zverev mit 7:6 im vierten Satz die Oberhand. Anfangs konnte sich Zverev vor allem auf den Aufschlag und Return stützen, im Laufe des Matches machte ihm Alcaraz das Match immer schwerer. Doch am Ende konnte Zverev seinen ersten Top 10 Sieg bei einem Grand Slam Turnier verzeichnen. Zverev trifft nun in der Vorschlussrunde auf Rafael Nadal, der sich am Abend gegen Novak Djokovic durchsetzen konnte. Im 59. Aufeinandertreffen gab es ein gewohnt enges und hochklassiges Match zu sehen.
