This celebrated songwriter stops by the show to discuss her years touring with Dolly Parton, singing with Kenny Chesney, and releasing albums that were mainstays on country radio.
This singer songwriter originally from Long Island, NY first got attention with her cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene." Dolly herself appeared in the video and performed the song on television with her a few times. Her debut single "Come To Jesus" is a beauty of a song and a 10 on the John Bommarito 1-10 scale.Mindy stopped by Grove Studios in Ypsilanti on a night off to talk a bit about life and play a couple of songs from her great new album "Quiet Town"Songs performed include:"Jericho" (written by Mindy Smith and Matraca Berg)"Come To Jesus" (written by Mindy Smith)"I'd Rather Be A Bridge" (written by Mindy Smith and Kevin Scott Rhoads) Learn more about Mindy here: https://mindysmithmusic.com/Learn more about Acoustic Alternatives and how you can support my efforts here: https://johnmbommarito.wixsite.com/johnbommarito/acoustic-alternativesHuge thanks to Rick and the team at Grove Studios. It takes grit for a history major to walk into a job fair for business students and convince the rep from Kraft Foods that she's the right person for the position. But that's exactly what our guest, Mindy Smith '13 did.Landing that job with Kraft spring-boarded Mindy into a marketing and sales career where she held positions with companies like Coke and now Shell. Currently, Mindy is a global strategy leader for Shell's Mobility business, and is responsible for brand standards at more than 47,000 retail sites worldwide.Mindy joins host Maya Pomroy '22 to chat about her career-defining pivots, the importance of being bold, critical insights she's learned at Shell and why she decided to get her MBA after an already successful career journey.Episode Guide:02:00 Career Beginnings and Early Jobs03:22 Landing a Job at Kraft Foods06:19 Insights from Working at Kraft15:11 Transition to Coke19:33 Joining Shell and Pursuing an MBA23:57 The Steamroller Persona24:54 Navigating Organizational Changes27:58 New Role at Shell29:00 Managing Global Insights31:09 Customer Experience and Competition35:45 Rice University's Lasting Impact41:58 Final Thoughts and LessonsOwl Have You Know is a production of Rice Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:Networking is about learning, not just opportunities35:31: Rice was such an important part of my life. And as I mentioned earlier, I still take a lot of the learnings and use them daily in my work. And one of the things that I really appreciated about Rice was going back to network, going back to hearing others' perspectives and how they handle things. And when I was there, I loved hearing from people who had already graduated…[38:07] One of the things I did throughout was connect with alumni whenever I had the opportunity at different events. And even now, I love to hear people's stories, and I like to hear what people do, and I like to hear, you know, quite honestly, they'll ask me questions sometimes that then get me thinking about things. And it's great to have that interaction. And, you know, people talk about network all the time in the sense of using your network if you're looking for a job or things like that. For me, it's really—it's the learning.Life isn't a straight line—embrace the curveballs41:44: Whether it's your life or your career, it's not a straight line, and you can't plan it out. I was just saying this to my sister-in-law: You can be the best planner. You can have every little detail planned out. Life is always going to throw you curveballs, and how you react to those curveballs—have the courage and overcome the fear—because some of those curveballs end up being amazing opportunities. Even though they might not have been in your original plans, that's definitely one. Number two would be to always be curious. One of the things that I think I have benefited from is that I'm not afraid to ask a lot of questions. Sometimes that can annoy people, or sometimes I do worry that if—especially if it's someone senior—they might see it as, you know, just, “Why is she asking so many questions?” But you know what? That's how you learn. Be curious, though, and learn new things. On the formula of success in a big company26:29: I've always had a formula. Even 20 years ago, when I had an actual office, I had on my board the formula for success in a big company: 60 percent your network, 20 percent actual work, and 20 percent perception. And I'll tell you, one of the things with what's been going on lately, I've been telling people I might change my formula to 50 percent network and 50 percent perception because, absolutely, in a time like this—where people who might not know you are making decisions about your future with the company—not only the network, but the perception, is big. So, more important than ever in times like this, it pays off.Show Links: TranscriptGuest Profiles:Mindy Smith | Rice Business

This is a heavily researched and science-backed supplement, that helps to break down the anti-nutrient phytate. Phytate is present on all beans, grains, nuts, and seeds and any product made from these foods (pasta, rice, chickpeas, nut butters, whole wheat flour, cereals, etc). Without the enzyme, the above-mentioned micronutrients are largely unavailable for absorption, leading to deficiencies. Without enough iron, our body struggles to transport oxygen. Without zinc, our body's immune system is impaired and many enzymatic processes cannot function normally. This enzyme has already helped a number of athletes with better performance, improved energy, anemia, fatigue, and other conditions. Have a read through the research on the site for more info, but trust us when we say that this enzyme could be a game-changer for athletes when it comes to optimizing performance! Today we're taking a step back and considering just what we're building, as we consider our faith lives and our post-COVID lives. Here are some resources I hope will help as you consider this question for yourselves. Connect with me on Instagram or on my blog to engage with me on this topic. 1. Bob Vila explains what a plumb line is and what it's for (for those of you who, like me, did not previously know). 2. Please listen to this one all the way to the end. Song: The Clearing, by Amanda Lindsey Cook 3. Mini-pilgrimage: go to a beach, a forest, a church, or some other holy place all by yourself. Let God speak to you there (maybe through journaling or in silence) about what you should keep, what you should leave behind, and what knowledge or wisdom you can carry with you from this last year. 4. Praying this one over all of us: Song: Rainbow, by Kacey Musgraves 5. The Next Right Thing, by Emily P. Freeman - companion journal is also available 6. Podcast: The Next Right Thing with Emily P. Freeman I love every episode, but Receive A New Beginning would make a great first episode for you. Minute 5:10 to the end is my favorite three minutes of any podcast ever. 7. Song: Better Boat, by Kenny Chesney & Mindy Smith 8. A Rhythm of Prayer: A Collection of Meditations for Renewal, edited by Sarah Bessey 9. This is what it looks like when something that's been confined for a long time and has done lots of growing in the dark, starts to emerge.
Chas Justus' musical taste ends around 1965, he says, and he has made his living playing in roots music bands in Southern Louisiana--the swing band The Red Stick Ramblers, and more recently in The swamp pop band The Revelers. Last fall, he brought together a number of his musical friends to record Joyeux Noël, Bon Chrismeusse, an EP of classic Christmas songs sung in Cajun French. He talks about how the project came about, and how COVID-19 helped make it possible. Along the way, he turns me on to a couple of tracks--Belton Richard's Cajun French version of Buck Owens' "You're All I Want for Christmas," and Chicago guitarist Joel Paterson's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." I first interviewed Justus in 2015 for MySpiltMilk.com. Here's that story on The Revelers. In this week's episode, I also talk about My Holiday by Mindy Smith, a Christmas album that I think merits more far attention than it gets.

Everyone knows that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you want to see change, you have to get out there and advocate for it. Mindy Smith joins Mark and Josh to talk about ways to get involved in lobbying for the interests of community pharmacy and speaking to your local representatives (Donuts preferred, but not required). Mindy is the Vice President of Professional Affairs at Tabula Rasa HealthCare. She is passionate about the advancement of medication safety and giving pharmacists the tools they need to identify and prevent adverse drug events (ADEs). Warning; Mindy is an amazing human, who shared a venerable story of how she survived, please take care of your mental health as there are descriptions of medical trauma and how truly evil a person can be to another. Listen with care.
Fortitude and fragility are strange bedfellows, but singer-songwriter Mindy Smith says both are essential to her craft as a songwriter. It's a mix we all need if we seek to do the work before us. To chase the dream, to bring about the imagined, to pin down the evasive—we must enter the fragility of the unknown and walk it out with an unfounded confidence. Oprah's 2020Vision Tour came to LA this week. For Christmas, I bought tickets for my mom and Phil and me to go see the show.I remember since I was six years old watching Oprah Winfrey show. My mom was a huge fan and so I was a huge fan.So it was really special last year when Oprah Winfrey announced that part of her partnership extension with WW, formerly known as weight Watchers, was going to be a tour. The show this weekend included Julianne Hough getting us whipped up into a frenzy with her dance moves and musical stylings. It also included Oprah being well -- Oprah -- and a workbook with Oprah helping us figure out what our own 2020 vision was. And the guest in Los Angeles was Jennifer Lopez fresh off of her big stint on the world's biggest stage at the Pepsi Halftime Show.I thought for this episode it would be fun to just talk about what happened, what did we see in ourselves, and what was the day like. And also a call to action for Oprah toward the end.

The protests that swept through the streets of Hong Kong beginning in the summer of 2019 highlighted the tension that exists between the residents of the region and China's political leadership. The politics of the region have also made their way into American popular culture through public disputes within the NBA, controversy over Blizzard's decision to ban a prominent Hong Kong gamer, and a South Park episode critical of Chinese censorship that led to the series being completely banned in the country. In this episode, Bob and Ben speak with Mindy Smith to learn about the history of Hong Kong, its special status as a distinct region within China, and the forces that pushed the people of Hong Kong into the streets. We also talk about how Hong Kong's distinct history has led to a clash in historical narratives, and what US policy toward the region can tell us about US foreign policy under recent presidents. Producing and writing some of the biggest tracks and records of 2018-19, listening to the universe, and breaking down the music of Ian Fitchuk. Starting in Illinois, we work on the life and ideas of Ian all the way up to Kacey Musgraves', Golden Hour's success and beyond. Ian Fitchuk's credits range from co-writing hits with Kacey Musgraves' to playing any instrument in the studio with major and indie acts. Presently his studio work ranges from singer-songwriter and Americana, to pop, rock, country music and the occasional gospel track. He has written and produced with Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, Andrew Combs, Lucie Silvas, Jacob Whitesides, Mindy Smith, and Drew Holcomb among others. In recent years, he has also collaborated with artists as diverse as James Bay, Cam, Kesha, Brothers Osborne, Shania Twain, Shawn Mendes, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Amy Grant, Jake Bugg, and Buddy Miller. He recently began composing for TV, including a track featured in ad for Google and several songs in the primetime hit, Nashville on ABC. In 2019, Ian was nominated and tied for most ACM nominations in categories like Producer of the Year, as well as Album of the Year, Bass Player of the Year, Drummer of the Year, Piano/Keyboards Player of the Year and Specialty Instrument(s) Player of the Year, for his contributions to Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour. In our conversation, we get to know what Ian gravitates toward in a session. Is it the people or the universe directing your actions and even the music? Not to mention, what holds most people back or puts people in a position to not move forward? But before we talk about music, we get to understand how Ian's early life echo's his talent. We also breakdown some of Ian's biggest projects in recent years including Ruston Kelly's Dying Star, Maren Morris' Girl, Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour, Susto, and others. We talk about taking risks, calibrating success, and creating an environment and balancing friendships in music.
At what point does a glass of wine to relax become a habit? A what point does it become an addiction? Mindy Smith-Bernard is a counsellor with an MSW who specializes in addictions, specifically alcoholism, and it's more common than you think. Mommy wine culture - it's everywhere - it's on wine glasses and Facebook posts. Mom's brunch? You know the wine will be flowing - it's become normal and expected, to the point where Moms who don't drink are criticized and judged. Why? It's an easy way to cope with stress - and being a Mom ain't easy. In our culture we want a quick fix - a "pill for every ill" - we want relief now. It's not that Moms don't know the value of self-care - they have the best intentions to do yoga, read, meditate or connect with a friend - all great ways to de-stress, but when life is crazy busy, self-care is often the first thing to go. It's just much easier to have a glass of wine while the kids play at your feet. Part of the problem is no one thinks it's a problem - we've created a culture of high functioning alcoholics - people believe that if they can hold down a job, take care of the kids and the household that there's nothing wrong with finishing a bottle of wine. We "other" addiction - addiction is for homeless people without jobs drinking out of a brown bag on a park bench - not for high functioning Moms, right? Tune in to learn more. The problem of ticketing and celebrating with songwriter/artist Mindy Smith (@mindysmithmusic) and Stephen Glicken, CEO of Project Admission. Armed with IMDB credits, running a record label, and working from the ground floor of CrowdSurge and Songkick. Stephen's latest venture is building an improved experience for the buying, selling, and distribution of digital tickets to increase data and revenue. Then Mindy Smith and I sat down not long after the re-release of her record One Moment More on vinyl and the release of Kenny Chesney's, "Better Boat". Mindy Smith, artist and songwriter, is celebrating 15 years of her first record, One Moment More. You've heard Mindy's songs recorded or heard her voice with Kenny Chesney, Dolly Parton, Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Olivia Newton John, John Prine and more. Originally from New York, Mindy made her way to Tennessee after her foster mother passed from breast cancer where she had her first taste of bluegrass music. Soon she started writing her original music and made her way to Nashville, TN where she was quickly discovered. A cover song by a legendary artist perked the ears of a producer which eventually led to her debut record, One Moment More. "Come to Jesus" was her biggest commercial hit, receiving airplay on country, adult album alternative and adult contemporary radio. The song charted at No. 32 on the Adult Top 40 chart of Billboard Magazine. In 2004, Smith appeared at the Cambridge Folk Festival in the U.K., which was broadcast nationally on BBC Radio. That same year, Smith was nominated for and won The Americana Music Association’s prestigious, Best Emerging Artist of the Year award. One Moment More is now available and can be bought from and she's hitting the road. Stephen Glicken's career starts in 2000 as an audio engineer in Miami, working with artists such as P. Diddy, Toni Braxton, Nas, Whitney Houston, No Doubt, and more. After Circle House, he connected with the Wu Tang Clan, becoming Ghostface Killah’s exclusive engineer on ‘The Pretty Toney Album’ and ‘Fishscale’. In 2004, Glicken moved to Puerto Rico to produce a couple of records and ended up living there for almost 3 years and being a part of the crew that brought Reggaeton music to the mainstream. These days, Stephen and Project Admission creates a more connected experience for the management, distribution, and exchange of event tickets. With a focus on user experience, the company’s custom technology tracks the chain of ownership for every ticket through its lifecycle, from purchase to event. Project Admission also knows that behind every ticket, there is a fan – someone who deserves to be protected from fraud and guaranteed the legitimacy of a ticket. By tracking the ticket, not only does Project Admission help fans, but it also helps venues and artists by providing valuable data for security and marketing purposes. Visit for more details about what they're doing for live events.
Fifteen years ago, Mindy Smith rocketed from local sets in Nashville to the national stage in a matter of a few months on the strength of a duet on "Jolene" with Dolly Parton and the January 2004 release of her debut album One Moment More. She became the first winner of the Americana Music Association Emerging Artist award, and wide audiences embraced her empathic songs and translucent voice. The years since have seen periods of high profile touring and periods of quiet. She's preparing to step back out and working on a new album. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary release of One Moment More on vinyl, we catch up about her life and path and a recent discovery. Also in the hour, the honey-toned voice of Adam Wakefield reached millions on television, but in Nashville he's a blue collar songwriting artist with a fine debut album.
My guest this month is, the one-and-only, Mindy Smith. She came by recently to talk through living an artist's life as a singer-songwriter. We talk about her early days in Nashville, playing shows when sick, confidence and being open in the writing and recording process, finding compatible co-writers, and many other topics. Mindy and her team are celebrating the 15th year anniversary of the release of her first record "One Moment More". Through Vanguard/Craft Records, they are reissuing the album on vinyl for the first time. Mindy is also selling an exclusive autographed coke-bottle-blue clear pressing of the record on her site, along with handwritten lyrics from any of her songs from the record. Roger started out in Cliffside Park NJ with a view of Manhattan recording bands in his basement studio before attending the Institute of Audio Research in New York and landing a job at Skyline Studios in 1975. During his time at Skyline Roger recorded many important artists including Laurie Anderson, They Might Be Giants, and 10,000 Maniacs. Making the inevitable shift to freelance Roger began working at Chung King House of Metal with Run DMC, Heavy D, and Stetsasonic, and also recording greats from the the NY jazz scene John Zorn, Bill Frisell, and Don Byron. Moving to Nashville TN in the 90s I first met Roger when he was mixing Jill Sobule at Woodland Studios where I was interning. And then we got a chance to work together at Alex The Great studio owned by Robin Eaton and Brad Jones recording a cool indi band Toy Bean. In 1993 Roger produced Painful, for the college radio favorites Yo La Tengo, which began a long relationship with the band going on to record seven full length albums. These included the critically acclaimed albums I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One in 1997, and 2000’s And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out. Roger continued to make records in both Nashville and NY until building his own Haptown Studio, where we are today. He has a long list of credits which include: producing Paula Cole’s double platinum, Grammy Nominated album, This Fire, Joseph Arthur, Lambchop, Josh Rouse, Jefferson Airplane/ Hot Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, Lou Reed, Rosanne Cash, John Cale, Jeff The Brotherhood, Son Volt, Mindy Smith, Cheap Trick, Gillian Welch, and John Mayer. The list goes on...
This week's episode helps you remember the reason for the season. When we create undue stress to make things perfect, we create chaos. Joining Kathy in this episode is Nashville Musician, Mindy Smith, as we talk about her Christmas CDS, "My Holiday," "Snowed In" and her new feature song, "The Snow and Three Thousand Miles."

Recorded live on Sept. 2, 2015. Raised as the youngest of four children in a big musical family in Swainsboro, Georgia, Bragg lived in a number of Southern musical capitals – Athens, Atlanta, and Nashville – before settling in New York in 2004. Her music is consequently a seamless hybrid of her southern Americana roots and the downtown New York singer-songwriter community of which she became a key member before moving to Nashville in December 2013.Tattoos and Bruises follows her sophomore release, Sugar (2007), which was produced by Darius Jones, and recorded in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Her debut album, Certain Simple Things (2004), was co-written, engineered and produced in Athens, Georgia, by Dave Haywood (Lady Antebellum). Mindy Smith, the iconic singer-songwriter who crosses genre lines with hits in country, pop, and alternative rock returns to Music Friday with her new Christmas EP, Snowed in. Her career took off in 2003 when she was invited to contribute to a Dolly Parton tribute album by her label, Vanguard, and appeared with Dolly on national television. She hasn't stopped since: she has produced five critically acclaimed and very successful albums and seven hit singles, one, Come to Jesus, which hit the Billbaord 40 at #32. She is appearing at the Grand Ole Opry December 14 with Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell and we are delighted she is taking the time to talk with us this Friday at 2:05 pm ET. Jason Vanderford is an eclectic, entrepreneurial, jazz, rock and gypsy/cajón genius who assembles musical projects/albums/tours/bands, his latest being the Junk Parlor. Junk Parlou is gypsy rock - a combination of jazz, rock, 50's 4-4 beats and Vanderford's vocals ranging from smooth and low to hot and howling. Joining Jason are Jimmy Grant on the Django-infused lead electric guitar, drummer and cajón player Rt Goodrich, and Tim Bush on the electric fretless bass. The effect ranges from mad genius to pure fun. Junk Parlor just wrapped up its Northwest tour with a final set of concerts in Seattle and will head to southern California right after Friday's show. They join us at 2:30 pm ET
