All lists come to an end at some point (often after ten entries) and this third and final podcast on the New York Times' selections for best jazz albums of 2024 considers the final two entries plus two more 2024 releases which the boys - spoiler alert - like quite as much as the chosen ten. Hummable melodies and beautiful woodwind playing highlight the also-rans. Meanwhile, in pop matters Mike's man crush on Sturgill Simpson continues and Pat thinks eighties band The Church is still pretty cool.

On the May 3 episode of New Music Friday, NPR Music's Hazel Cills and WRTI's Nate Chinen discuss the week's essential new albums, including Radical Optimism, from the dance-pop superstar Dua Lipa. The songs on Radical Optimism are mostly in the vein of Dua Lipa's earlier work, but that itself might be reason to keep a militantly sunny attitude: A parade of hits from her last album, Future Nostalgia, proved to have incredible staying power — "Levitating" hung around in the top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 chart for nearly a year — and she contributed to last year's cultural juggernaut Barbie with "Dance the Night." Still, Hazel and Nate say the new album offers hints of a few surprising artistic developments in her sound.Radical Optimism isn't the only album out this week that demands attention. New records by the inimitable folk songwriter Jessica Pratt and the always ambitious jazz maestro and saxophonist Kamasi Washington focus their own sounds in new and highly rewarding ways. Featured Albums:• Dua Lipa, 'Radical Optimism'• Jessica Pratt, 'Here in the Pitch'• Kamasi Washington, 'Fearless Movement'Other notable albums out May 3:• Willow, 'empathogen'• Mdou Moctar, 'Funeral for Justice'• Steph Richards, 'Power Vibe'• Charlotte Day Wilson, 'Cyan Blue'• Luke Stewart's Silt Trio, 'Unknown Rivers'• 4batz, 'u made me a st4r'Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Join Luke Stewart, Cathy Wilkerson, and Alice Lynd for a conversation on Staughton Lynd's struggle against the war in Vietnam. Staughton Lynd was one of the principal intellectuals and activists making the radical argument that the U.S. intervention in Vietnam was illegal under domestic and international law. Lynd was uncompromising in his courageous stance that the U.S. should immediately withdraw from Vietnam, and that soldiers and draftees should refuse to participate in the war based on their individual conscience and the Nuremberg Principles of 1950. Lynd's writings, speeches, and interviews against the war are collected in the recently released My Country is the World. For this launch event that volume's editor, Luke Stewart, will be joined by Cathy Wilkerson and Alice Lynd for a discussion of Staughton and Alice's activism against the war and its lessons for today's anti-imperialist struggles. Get My Country is the World from Haymarket: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1956-my-country-is-the-world Speakers: Luke Stewart is a historian focusing on the antiwar movements during the Vietnam War and the global war on terror. He has co-edited Let Them Stay: U.S. War Resisters in Canada, 2004-2016. He currently lives in Nantes, France. Cathy Wilkerson joined Students for a Democratic Society in 1963, supporting an active civil rights movement in Chester, PA. She continued with SDS after college, becoming editor of New Left Notes and then an organizer with the SDS Washington DC Region. After the assassination of Fred Hampton in 1969 she joined Weatherman, remaining a fugitive until 1980. After getting out of prison, she worked with the Attica civil suit, and then as an educator in NYC public schools for 20 years. See also Flying Close to the Sun, My Life as a Weatherman (2007). Staughton and Alice Lynd (respondant) were married for more than 71 years, having met during Harvard Summer School in the summer of 1950. While Staughton spoke, wrote, and in other ways opposed the Vietnam War, Alice expressed her concerns through collecting and publishing We Won't Go: Personal Accounts of War Objectors (Beacon Press, 1968), and becoming a draft counselor. We Won't Go was the Lynds' first venture into doing oral history or, as Staughton put it, Doing History from the Bottom Up! (Haymarket, 2014). The Lynds partnered in editing Rank and File: Personal Histories by Working-Class Organizers (Haymarket, expanded edition, 2011).

Just days before major midterm elections, President Joe Biden is imploring voters to save American democracy from Trump supporters' election-denying lies and the violence that he says they have inspired. Biden shined a spotlight on “ultra MAGA” Republicans — a reference to Donald Trump's “Make America Great Again” slogan — and mounting concerns over political violence. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who stands to be speaker of the House if the GOP retakes control of the chamber, tweeted, “President Biden is trying to divide and deflect at a time when America needs to unite—because he can't talk about his policies that have driven up the cost of living. The American people aren't buying it.” The bad news is that no one won Wednesday night's huge $1.2 billion Powerball jackpot. The good news is that means the prize has grown even larger to $1.5 billion ahead of the next drawing Saturday night. North Korea has added to its barrage of recent weapons tests, firing at least three missiles including an intercontinental ballistic missile that prompted the Japanese government to issue evacuation alerts and temporarily halt trains. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell sought to strike a delicate balance at a moment when high inflation is bedeviling the nation's economy and commanding a central role in the midterm elections. Powell suggested that the Fed may decide in coming months to slow its aggressive interest rate increases. In sports, the Astros made history with a no-hitter against the Phillies in Game 4 to even the World Series. The Cavaliers outlasted the Celtics, the Sabres rallied past the Penguins and the Commanders are looking into financial changes to the team. Survivors and loved ones of victims of the Parkland school shooting were berating gunman Nikolas Cruz for a second day before he was sentenced.

Today’s episode is taken from a video report I posted on Wednesday. It’s the story of the Cleveland Warriors, a semi-professional football team in the National Public Safety Football League, and how their management snuck Tamir Rice’s killer, Timothy Loehmann, onto the team. When black players found out and complained, they were pushed out themselves. I am very happy to report that this morning I awoke to learn that the president and vice president of the Warriors have both resigned in the wake of this scandal. State of Injustice This documentary series will examine Ohio city by city, in order to expose all of the ways that the state's law enforcement departments and judicial systems are failing its citizens. Irreversible Entanglements are a liberation-oriented free jazz collective formed in early 2015 by saxophonist Keir Neuringer, poet Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother) and bassist Luke Stewart, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. Their music is soothing, chaotic, powerful, and deeply rooted in movements for Black freedom and resistance. Today on the Rebel Beat we're joined by Keir and Luke from the band who join us from Philly and Washington D.C. respectively to talk about their new album "Who sent you?", band life under lockdown, and the radical politics of jazz improvisation. James Brandon Lewis is from Buffalo, New York, a city which has produced a surprising number of musicians whose work I listen to a lot, including Grover Washington, Jr., Charles Gayle, Rick James, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Morton Feldman, and Cannibal Corpse. I’ve seen Lewis perform live twice, both times with the avant-garde rock trio Harriet Tubman. One time was a straight double bill – James’s trio with bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Warren Trae Crudup, plus guitarist Anthony Pirog, opened for Tubman. Then, at Winter Jazzfest in 2018, Tubman put together an expanded group to perform a re-interpretation of Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz. That night, the lineup was Tubman – Brandon Ross on guitar, Melvin Gibbs on bass, JT Lewis on drums – plus James’s trio, plus Jaimie Branch on trumpet and Darius Jones on alto sax. It was really fantastic, one of those things that you only get to see once in your life. You’re either in the room when the magic happens, or you get to hear people tell stories about it for years afterward. James made two records for the OKeh label – Divine Travels, which had William Parker on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums, plus poet Thomas Sayers Ellis, who runs Heroes Are Gang Leaders with him, and then Days of FreeMan, which had Jamaaladeen Tacuma on bass and Rudy Royston on drums. By the way, if you’re new to this podcast, a lot of the people I’ve mentioned so far – Melvin Gibbs, William Parker, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma – have all been on in the past. Anyway, James followed Days of FreeMan with No Filter, which featured his live trio plus Pirog, and then he made Radiant Imprints, a duo album with drummer Chad Taylor, and An UnRuly Manifesto, with the trio plus Pirog and Jaimie Branch. And every one of those records is absolutely worth your time, so check ’em out. This conversation with James Brandon Lewis is the longest thing I’ve ever recorded for this podcast, and it went in a whole bunch of directions I wasn’t expecting. I wrote down about two pages of questions, and I think I asked three of them. You’ll hear what I mean – he has a lot to say on a variety of issues. This might be the most in-depth interview he’s ever done, and I hope you'll find it as fascinating as I did. In episode #292 of Talking Radical Radio (October 23, 2018), Scott Neigh interviews Luke Stewart. Back in 2010, Stewart was one of the many grassroots activists and organizers who took to the streets of Toronto in opposition to the G8 and G20 meetings being hosted that year by Canada. He was also one of the many people who directly experienced the now infamously bad behaviour on the part of the police during the protests. Neigh and Stewart talk about the summit protests and about Stewart's ongoing lawsuit against the police, which he says is one measure among the many we must take to hold them accountable. On July 19th, 2018, Ben Remsen and Luke Stewart spent a couple hours in the former's living room in West Philadelphia, listening to music in some way related to Luke's work. Subscribe to the Now Is Podcast in iTunes.
In episode #188 of Talking Radical Radio (October 5, 2016), Scott Neigh speaks with Sarah Hipworth and Luke Stewart about *Let Them Stay*, a new book that brings together the voices of U.S. soldiers who have sought sanctuary in Canada in opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan -- with a look at the history of the struggle to let them remain here. Joe Riggs talks to the Ringside Report a week before his big Strikeforce bout with Phil Baroni.Over his career, Riggs has fought in the Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight and Welterweight divisions, and became a four-time Desert Quest champion, two-time Grappler's Quest Advance champion, Rage in the Cage Heavyweight and Middleweight champion, Art of War Heavyweight champion, Evolution Combat Heavyweight champion, and XCF Light Heavyweight champion. [2] Riggs' dream of fighting in the UFC materialized in 2004, in a winning bout against Canadian fighter Joe Doerksen. Riggs received his shot at the UFC Welterweight title at UFC 56 in November 2005 against Matt Hughes. Originally, the title shot was offered to Karo Parisyan, who had to withdraw due to a torn hamstring. When Riggs was contacted to take Parisyan's place he jumped at the chance, despite having fought at UFC 55 just a month earlier. However, Riggs did not make the required weight and the fight was declared a non-title event, due to Hughes allowing Riggs to fight him (if a fighter does not make weight for a match, the match may still take place if their opponent allows it). Despite his efforts, Riggs could not mount a significant challenge; Hughes took him down and submitted him with a kimura from half-guard just minutes into the first round of the fight. Following his loss to Hughes, Riggs rebounded to win against Nick Diaz (decision) at UFC 57. In the hospital room after the fight, Diaz and Riggs got into a physical altercation where they had to be separated by police. Riggs then moved up to Middleweight to face The Ultimate Fighter alumni Mike Swick. Early in the fight Riggs was caught in a guillotine choke and tapped out. Riggs then fought The Ultimate Fighter 2's Jason Von Flue, submitting him with a triangle choke. Riggs' last UFC bout was on December 13, 2006 against Welterweight contender Diego Sanchez at UFC Fight Night 7. Riggs lost the fight due to knockout from a hook followed by a knee in 1:45 of the first round. Following the fight with Sanchez, Riggs chose to go to the WEC and compete for the vacant Middleweight championship, but had to pull out of the fight the day before because of a recurring back injury.[3] Riggs lost to Cory Devela via TKO at Strikeforce: At The Dome due to re-injuring his back while pummeling before Devela threw him. He was a heavy favorite in this fight, and his loss continued a streak of performances that did not live up to the expectations for the talented fighter (particularly vs. Hughes, Salaverry, Swick, and Sanchez). Riggs was to return to action on Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Thomson, facing Jiujitsu specialist Luke Stewart. Riggs stepped in as a late replacement for Shonie Carter who was injured in training. The fight was to be contested at a catchweight of 178 pounds.[1] However, He was denied licensure by the California State Athletic Commission after disclosing his recent use of prescription medication during the licensing process. Joe Riggs lost to Kazuo Misaki at Strikeforce at the Playboy Mansion on September 20, 2008. Joe Riggs won his last fight at Strikeforce: Destruction on November 21, 2008 against Luke Stewart by TKO (Punches) in 2nd round 2:05. Riggs broke his hand throwing the first punch of the bout, but managed to rally in the second round, breaking Stewart's nose in the process. [2] He will next be fighting on the Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields card from the ScottTrade Center in St. Louis,MO on June 6, 2009. His opponent will be Phil Baroni in a 3 round welterweight bout. This card will be broadcast live on the Showtime cable network.
