In today's episode, Kaustubh and Anirudh invite Martin Stelbrink to converse on a book that he always goes back to….Anniversaries by Uwe Johnson. About Uwe Johnson`s Anniversaries: As a novel, Uwe Johnson's masterpiece, Anniversaries, is at once daringly simple in conception and wonderfully complex and engaging in effect. The main character of this book is Gesine Cresspahl, a German emigre living on the Upper West Side of New York City and working as a translator for a bank who is the single mother of a ten-year-old daughter, Marie. The book would tell the story of a year in the life of this little family in relation to the unfolding story of the year, as winnowed from the pages of the New York Times, of which Gesine is a devoted if wary reader. Monumental and intimate, sweeping in vision and full of incident, richly detailed and endlessly absorbing, Anniversaries, now for the first time available in English in a brilliant new translation by Damion Searls, is nothing short of a revelation. (Courtesy: Goodreads) Our guest speaker, Martin Stelbrink, is based in Germany and is the Managing Director in Accenture's Technology Practice focused on complex delivery challenges in Application Services ranging from System Integration, Packaged Solutions Rollout and Operations. He is a down-to-earth Westphalian, who settled in the lower Rhine area close to Düsseldorf. Besides technology he is a voracious reader, an ambitious amateur photographer and a passionate supporter of Borussia Mönchengladbach. In this episode, Martin shares how he fell in love with reading and how he found 'friends' in Gesine Cresspahl and other characters from Uwe Johnson's Anniversaries. Alan Frazier, a pioneer in the healthcare venture industry with $7.1 billion in capital raised, discusses starting his firm in 1991 with a $5 million fund, turning down the role of CFO of Microsoft, going from a CPA to CFO of a fast-growing biotech startup, how his childhood prepared him for life as an investor, the importance of hiring people with the right values, traits of great entrepreneurs, how storytelling allows venture capitalists to help build companies, and reflections on his professional career and community involvement. Listen to the end to gain insight into spending more time with his foundation and giving back to the community in recent years, as well as his advice to find a group of mentors to support you on your journey. Top Three Takeaways: #1 Early in his career, Alan chose culture over money when he turned down an offer to become CFO of the 80-employee Microsoft. Although he had a feeling he might make a lot of money, he didn't think Microsoft was a good culture fit or that he would enjoy his life if he worked there. This is a great lesson in the importance of finding an organization that fits your values and sticking to that even when facing a tough decision. #2 In recent years, Alan has realized the importance of going beyond business and has gotten much more involved in giving back to his community through his foundation and nonprofit board roles. The things you do outside of work can bring a lot of joy, fulfillment, inspiration and energy in other parts of your life. In short, it's good for yourself, good for your career, and of course good for your community to step away from work and be involved in your community. #3 Alan stressed the importance of finding mentors who truly care for you to help guide you. This show is meant to help introduce the careers and advice of a couple of successful individuals, but it's only meant as a starting point. Find mentors who have been where you want to go, who know you, care for you, and can share their specific experiences and feedback to support you on your journey. Since 2005, 61 Frazier Life Sciences portfolio companies, many of which were created or seeded by Frazier, have completed IPOs or M&As. Prior to forming Frazier Healthcare Ventures, Alan was the executive vice president and chief financial officer of Immunex Corporation. Later, he served as the senior financial advisor and chief financial officer of Affymax and worked on the spinout of Affymetrix. Prior to Immunex, Alan was head of the Emerging Business Practice and co-head of the Technology Practice for the Seattle office of Arthur Young Company (now, Ernst & Young). Alan holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Washington. He has served on numerous boards, including Calypso Medical Technologies, Portola Pharmaceuticals, and TridentUSA Health Services. Alan is active in his community, having served on the boards of UW Medicine and Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center. Making joy a priority at work.Quotes from the show:Consulting is “the hidden growth industry, because it's an index for change.” -Alex Liu [3:42]“As soon as you stop learning about an industry, a sector, people, how people work, you're not a very good teacher, consultant, or coach. So I think consultants need to be curious. They need to want to make a difference.” -Alex Liu [5:15] “We need to make sure that we create a culture, which is not only you feel psychologically and physically safe to be in, you need to be seen for who you are, not just your identity because most diversity is actually invisible, as you know. It's not just race, gender, or age. It is many other things.” -Alex Liu [13:23]“We're human at our core, and companies and people that are successful recognize and treat people that way--as individuals, not as easy identities.” -Alex Liu [33:50] “If you don't start with reality, you can't fix it.” -Alex Liu [45:50] “Run your own race. In this episode, Hall welcomes back Jeff Stewart, Co-Founder & Managing Director of GPO Fund. The GPO team invests in tech-driven, founder-led, North American companies that can harness Asia-Pacific public capital markets to achieve growth, business expansion, and market leadership. Historically, venture capital succeeded by investing early in companies that later went public to access growth capital, establish market leadership and provide ROI. Over the past twenty years, the U.S. IPO market has shifted focus to mega-cap listings. Mid-sized companies now rarely attract growth capital through U.S. public offerings. Venture capital time horizons have elongated to over ten years and M&A and private equity are often the only strategic outcomes, stunting opportunities for companies to realize their full potential. Meanwhile, Asia-Pacific economies and investment capital are rapidly expanding. There is a significant demand in Asia-Pacific to invest in high-growth technology companies that can expand globally and list on an APAC exchange. Jeff is an investor, serial entrepreneur, and inventor with experience scaling technology-enabled international businesses. Jeff began his career as a Management Consultant at Ernst & Young's Technology Practice, living on the road, advising Global 1000 financial institutions and exchanges. While still in his 20s he started his first technology company. He has since started numerous venture-backed companies, including two companies included in Inc. 500 lists of the fastest-growing companies. In 2014, Jeff's FinTech start-up was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer, and that same year, Jeff was recognized as the William F. Glaser Rensselaer Entrepreneur of the Year. Today, Jeff is a Managing Director at the Global Public Offering Fund, which he co-founded in 2018 to invest in founder-led, growth stage, technology companies. Jeff shares with Hall what excites him now, what sectors he focuses on, some of his past experiences with startups, and some of the challenges they face.
