In this first episode of 'Clear Intentions' (formerly the Minimalist Moms podcast) I reconnect with friend, Ginny Yurich - the founder of 1000 Hours Outside. In this conversation we cover how she juggles multiple roles as a homeschooling mom, author, and outdoor advocate. What does she outsource? If anything? I had to know! And, of course, I couldn't let Ginny go without discussing ways to spend our time outdoors - specifically she discusses encouragement for teenagers, tired moms and for those living in colder environments. Playing with our kids doesn't always come naturally to parents. For some of us, it might feel uninteresting, repetitive, or as though the only way to participate is by taking over. But today's conversation might just change the way you think about play. We're diving into the transformative power of play as a form of communication that allows our kids to feel safe while exploring what's going on inside them. Joining me is Georgie Wisen-Vincent, an expert in play therapy and co-author, alongside Dr. Tina Payne Bryson, of the new book The Way of Play: Using Little Moments of Big Connection to Raise Kind and Confident Kids. In today's episode, Georgie shares insights from The Way of Play and explains why play is a universal language that helps kids express their feelings and navigate life's challenges. We discuss how parents can intentionally use play to strengthen bonds, nurture sibling relationships, and reconnect after time apart. Georgie also offers practical strategies for engaging in play effectively, such as mirroring your child's play to deepen connection and understanding. Plus, we explore how play isn't just for kids—it's a lifelong skill that can enhance relationships at every stage of life. About Georgie Wisen-Vincent Georgie Wisen-Vincent, LMFT, RPT-S, ECMHS is a nationally recognized play therapy expert and co-author (with Dr. Tina Payne Bryson) of the new book -- THE WAY OF PLAY (Penguin Random House, January 2025). Georgie is the Founder/Director of The Play Strong Institute, a center devoted to the study, research, and practice of play therapy through a neurodevelopment lens, along with Dr. Bryson, the Founder/Executive Director of The Center for Connection, a multidisciplinary clinical practice in Southern California. Georgie is also a child, adolescent, and family psychotherapist and maintains a private practice at The Center for Connection. The Play Strong Institute offers the Certificate in Play Therapy with a Neurorelational Emphasis, an educational pathway toward becoming a credentialed play therapist. Through the Institute, the Play Strong approach was developed using child-led, adult scaffolded connection and play to help parents, therapists, educators, and care providers augment intervention aimed at the social, emotional, developmental, and learning needs of children from infancy to early adolescence. Play Strong Parenting (a component of Neurofilial Therapy) has been validated by empirical research and is currently being studied with non-parental caregivers and early childhood educators, among other research investigations currently underway. Things you'll learn Why play is a natural language that fosters social-emotional development, allowing children to express their feelings and process difficult experiences How parents can strengthen connections by intentionally setting aside time for play and becoming active observers rather than controllers How little moments of play can lead to big connections, helping to nurture sibling relationships and strengthen bonds after time apart How to engage in play effectively, mirroring our child's play to enhance connection and understanding Why play is a lifelong skill that not only supports children's growth but also enriches adult relationships and communication Resources mentioned The Way of Play: Using Little Moments of Big Connection to Raise Kind and Confident Kids by Tina Payne Bryson and Georgie Wisen-Vincent The Play Strong Institute Tina Payne Bryson's website Georgie Wisen-Vincent on Instagram Tina Payne Bryson on Instagram The Way of Play on the Play Strong Institute website The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind by Dr. Dan Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson PhD No-Drama Discipline: The Whole-Brain Way to Calm the Chaos and Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind by Dr. Dan Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson PhD Learn more about your ad choices. What does it mean to break down information in order to build up social competencies? And how does that relate to people with compelling social anxiety? In this discussion with the founder of Social Thinking, Michelle Garcia Winner, we explore the relationship between "being social" and social cognition (ie. social thinking). We touch on four areas of executive function that can foster our ability to learn how to take action on social dynamics that we want to do and are important to us. Get a better understanding of social dynamics and how to help your kids navigate them. Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC-SLP, is the founder and CEO of Think Social Publishing, Inc, (a.k.a. Social Thinking). She is a globally recognized thought leader, author, speaker, and social-cognitive therapist who is dedicated to fostering awareness and development of our social-emotional and organizational selves, both neurodivergent and neurotypical. Across her 30+ year career she has created numerous evidence-based strategies, treatment frameworks, and curricula to help family members as well the professionals who support them foster the development of social and organizational competencies and problem solving. Her methodology is most effective with children and adults who have a solid command of expressive and receptive language. Michelle and her team continually update the Social Thinking® Methodology based on the latest research and clinical insights. Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Michelle Garcia Winner. Here is what to expect on this week's show: Michelle stresses the importance of understanding the individual you are trying to help. Tailoring social strategies based on the person's specific challenges and strengths can significantly enhance their social learning experience. Michelle explains managing social anxiety requires self-regulation, flexibility, and self-compassion. Encouraging individuals to be kind to themselves and allowing them to progress at their own pace can foster a more comfortable social interaction environment. Michelle highlights the significance of working through the social learning process slowly and deliberately. Send us a textEpisode 160 (a continuation from last weeks episode) with Dr Dan Siegel explores how a child's brain is different from the adult brain, and how by understanding a child's brain, we may parent from a place of empathy. Daniel J. Siegel received his medical degree from Harvard University and completed his postgraduate medical education at UCLA with training in pediatrics and child, adolescent and adult psychiatry. He served as a National Institute of Mental Health Research Fellow at UCLA, studying family interactions with an emphasis on how attachment experiences influence emotions, behavior, autobiographical memory and narrative.Dr. Siegel's book, Mindsight: The New Science of Personal Transformation (Bantam, 2010), offers the general reader an in-depth exploration of the power of the mind to integrate the brain and promote well-being. He has written six parenting books, including the three New York Times bestsellers Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain (Tarcher/Penguin, 2014); The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind (Random House, 2011) and No-Drama Discipline: The Whole-Brain Way to Calm the Chaos and Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind (Bantam, 2014), both with Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D., The Power of Showing Up: How Parental Presence Shapes Who Our Kids Become and How Their Brains Get Wired (Ballantine Books 2020), The Yes Brain: How to Cultivate Courage, Curiosity, and Resilience in Your Child (Bantam, 2018) also with Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D., and Parenting from the Inside Out: How a Deeper Self-Understanding Can Help You Raise ChildDr Jessica Hochman is a board certified pediatrician, mom to three children, and she is very passionate about the health and well being of children. Y'all, we really believe this episode is a MUST LISTEN. On a 1 to 10 scale when it comes to emotions, we're seeing more kids who are living at 10 than ever before. They're using big words. You've heard us say it…rather than sad, they're saying “I'm depressed.” Rather than worried or stressed, they're saying “I have anxiety.” When they get the very most upset, they say “I want to kill myself!” And we're left wondering—and panicking—that it really might be true. We have GOT to help kids find their way not only to accurate words to describe their emotion but to the FOUNDATIONAL milestone of perspective. In other words, we know, as adults, that most of life is about a 3 to a 7 on a scale and we have to help kids find their way to the 3's and the 7's, so we really do know the 10's are happening. Plus, that kind of perspective is crucial to healthy relationships, workplaces…just healthy life, in general. So, we really do believe this conversation is deeply important. Share it with your friends, with your spouse, on your stories, in all the spaces. We've got to change things for the kids we love. . . . . . He's a prolific author, an entrepreneur and perhaps most of all, a teacher. This conversation is full over surprises from canoeing
“Our relationships really shape how we feel, how we think, how we remember things, how we tell the story of who we are, the sense of self, where you focus your attention, what gives you a sense of purpose.Relational integration in a family leads to the growth of neural integration inside the child's nervous system. Every time you say regulation—like regulating emotion or your mood, regulating attention, thought behavior, self-understanding, morality—it depends on integration in the brain. So the neural integration is the basis for optimal regulation, but it comes from relational integration. We all can follow Picasso's suggestion, which I think is really beautiful: The meaning of life discovering our gift. The purpose of life is giving it away.” (Dan Siegel)In developmental science, there are lots of debates between nature and nurture. And Dr. Dan Siegel's groundbreaking work in interpersonal neurobiology demonstrates that we are naturally wired for nurture—and furthermore, we cannot thrive without it.Over the past five decades, he has sought to explain through attachment theory and a study of the brain, how relationships shape our feelings, thoughts, memories, stories and personal narratives, and how all these offer an opportunity for us to integrate all of our personal subjective with the world outside us.Our relational tendencies and inner being are malleable—always growing and changing. We are under construction our entire lives, and that's good news for those of us who feel the weight of loneliness, relational struggle, or the challenges of mental illness.Dan Siegel's work helps us become deeply present to others—in friendships, romance, or parenting—by becoming deeply attuned to your inner life, including all of our emotions, plans, pain, and our ongoing and evolving stories. His research shows that caring and attuned relationships provide a safe and secure environment in which we can experience integration and gain insight into what is most meaningful to us. He calls this concept “mindsight”—how we gain an inner sense of self is intertwined with how we relate to others. And he offers how mindfulness and meditation are important to this process of becoming intraconnected. Life today is characterized by isolation and fragmentation, but Dan's wisdom and practices offer helpful guidelines on how we can grow whole—and persons in deepening, reciprocating relationships.Dr. Dan Siegel is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. He has authored numerous research articles, books, and accessible materials that apply what we know about the brain to our most sacred and significant relationships. His many books include the groundbreaking introduction to interpersonal neurobiology, The Developing Mind—as well as Mindsight, Parenting from the Inside Out, The Whole Brain Child, and his most recent book, Intra-Connected.In this conversation with Dan Siegel, we discuss:The connection between the mind and the brain, and why that matters for our thrivingComing to terms with big, challenging emotions—especially fearHow psychological integration creates flow and harmony and helps us deal with chaos and rigidityThe scientific connection between focused attention, open awareness, and compassionate intentionHe walks us through a mindfulness exercise he calls “the wheel of awareness”The neurobiology of interpersonal relationshipsAnd we discuss how that impacts not just our spirituality and relationships, but society as a whole.About Dan SiegelDr. Siegel is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. An award-winning educator, he is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and recipient of several honorary fellowships. Dr. Siegel is also the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute, an educational organization, which offers online learning and in-person seminars that focus on how the development of mindsight in individuals, families and communities can be enhanced by examining the interface of human relationships and basic biological processes. His psychotherapy practice includes children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. He serves as the Medical Director of the LifeSpan Learning Institute and on the Advisory Board of the Blue School in New York City, which has built its curriculum around Dr. Siegel's Mindsight approach. He is author of many books, including, The Developing Mind: How Relationships and the Brain Interact to Shape Who We Are, Mindsight: The New Science of Personal Transformation, The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind, Survive Everyday Parenting Struggles, and Help Your Family Thrive, Parenting from the Inside Out: How A Deeper Self-Understanding Can Help You Raise Children Who Thrive, and his most recent, IntraConnected: MWe (Me + We) as the Integration of Self, Identity, and Belonging.Show NotesExplore Dr. Dan Siegel's Website ResourcesDan Siegel's latest book: Intraconnected: MWe (Me + We) as the Integration of Self, Identity, and BelongingPracticing the Wheel of Awareness (guided meditative exercises): https://drdansiegel.com/wheel-of-awareness/Emotional realities reverberating throughout our livesPicasso on meaning and purpose: “The meaning of life discovering our gift. “How do we actually with due speed, cuz this is a timely issue, start to live in modern culture, which is taken over the planet. Basically live in a way that is really about the truth of who we are. That we are a me and we are a we, and that if we live that way, we wouldn't treat each other as enemies, we would treat each other as relatives. You know, you don't get along with every relative the same way, but if they're in your family, they're your family. And if we then saw all of nature as the family of nature, you know, we would treat earth not like a trash can, but a sanctuary. And, and we would do this together. And we are incredibly collaborative, we're incredibly creative and yes, we can use competition, but what we can do in our competition is make it so we're competing to really deal with, you know, diseases and famine and all the problems we face. So when you win the competition, everybody benefits.” So says Dr. Daniel Siegel, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center. As an interpersonal neurobiologist Dan is focused on the creation of self—and his latest book, IntraConnected: MWe (Me + We) as the Integration of Self, Identity, and Belonging takes his lifelong pursuit to understand the Venn diagram between personal reality and collective identity even farther: In it, he explores questions of consciousness, the importance of connection, and the world of quantum physics as it relates to our relationship with the external world. For Dan, the science of energy, which animates us all, is the study of the continuum of possibility to probability. *Parenting can be tough work, and at times it can feel like just surviving is the most you're able to do. But psychotherapists Siegel and Bryson show that the most difficult moments are actually opportunities to thrive – you just need to use integration. *Integration means connecting the two sides of your – and your child's – brain. *This can occur both horizontally, left brain to right brain, or vertically, ‘upstairs' brain to ‘downstairs' brain. *It's about engaging both the emotional and logical parts of the brain and understanding how these sides develop at different stages in your child. *Eminently practical and engaging, the strategies and techniques in The Whole-Brain Child will help your children lead connected, meaningful and balanced lives. Larry Broughton has an incredible wealth of knowledge – he's a bestselling author, Green Beret, and award-winning speaker about leadership and entrepreneurship. Larry opens the episode talking about the Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) and how he gives back to the veteran community. Larry offers thoughts on why veterans are more successful in entrepreneurship, crediting this to the fact that veterans tend to have a servant mind frame. Larry talks about what drew him to the military, and ultimately becoming a Green Beret – ultimately serving for 8 years on an “A” Team. After he decided to leave the military, he found himself in the hotel industry and found he had a knack for it. Some mentors and investors saw Larry's potential, which led to Larry starting Broughton Hotels. Larry also talks about his struggles with alcohol, drugs, and the point he found himself standing on a balcony, contemplating jumping. Even through the low points, he found the courage to continue on and to focus on living a life of significance. He closes the episode by talking about his view that leaders lack courage nowadays – and he provides a call for others to step up and lead, to make the hard decisions and choose the hard right over the easy wrong. Has this happened to you? You walk into the living room and see your kid's shoes thrown on the couch. You calmly ask your kid to take their shoes off the couch and put them away. You come back later, and there is your kid, and there are the shoes. Still on the couch. So you ask again, and your kid tells you that they will do it in a minute. Then you come into the room again, and nothing has happened. Neither the shoes nor your kid has moved. You absolutely lose it! You yell at your kid, they yell back at you or start crying, and then you end up putting the shoes away yourself. If this sounds familiar to you, then you will love this episode. How do you achieve work-life balance as a mom with 2 baby boys under 5? The answer is simple: I DON'T. Personally, I believe balance is bullshit. Instead, I create systems and structures that allow the “orchestra” of all the “sections” of my life - work, kids, love, hobbies, personal time, friends - to harmonize. If you're a working mom or mompreneur and have struggled with work-life balance too, or if you've felt the deep-seeded pangs of mom-guilt stirring in you as you battle to achieve this state of “balance” then, Queen, this episode is for you. In this episode, I give you more than just tips for work-life balance, you get the subconscious strategies to shift to living in alignment, so that you show up feeling fulfilled, joyful, and - dare I say - having fun in both your business and with your kids. #worklifebalance #mompreneur #workingmom THE PRINCESS AND THE B PODCAST PLAYLIST LINK: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2ClsckBxxujcpec_c4m-haGSeWZkfNmP

Part 2 of this conversation with the incredible Jennifer Wiessner is the HOW! The “How” is such a big aspect of this topic that we decided to dedicate an entire episode to it. We start off with a bang, diving into her teaser from Part 1 on why we need to strike “virgin” from our vocabulary. Trust me, it's eye-opening.Jennifer shares with us the importance of using anatomically correct terms, what those words are and when to start using them with our children. She discusses ways to prevent shaming our children for behaviors that come naturally to all humans based on how our bodies are built because with shame comes unhealthy sexuality. She also “wraps parents in a warm blanket” by telling those who are, “worried they've said the wrong things or have missed the boat that you don't know what you don't know. Most of us have been brought up in a culture that is sex-saturated yet sex silent. No one taught us, so we all need to cut ourselves a little slack. But, now is the time to change that.” Please let me know if you would be interested in participating in a workshop by Jennifer through the Mama Mindset community via zoom. The term "toddler" is typically used to describe a child that is between the ages of one and three, although some people consider a three-year-old up until four, also a toddler. It's the stage in a human's life when they're no longer a newborn, they're no longer an infant, so a baby, but they're also not really a kid.The term toddler comes from the verb toddle, which means to walk with short and unsteady steps, according to Oxford Languages. For most of us, when we learn to walk well, we no longer toddle. We actually don't use the term toddle very often in English, although it does exist. There is much to be said about toddlers, and that's why today's 5-minute English lesson will be about this stage of development in a human's life.Mentioned in this episode: The 5-Minute English CourseThe Whole-Brain Child (12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind)How to Talk So Little Kids Will Listen (A Survival Guide To Life With Children Ages 2-7)This episode is part of Season 2 as well as a BONUS lesson for Season 3.
