In evolutionary psychology, there's often discussion about the mismatch between our modern environment and the way our brains evolved to function. While our lives have transformed dramatically in recent years, our brains haven't kept pace with these changes.  This disconnection is particularly striking given the rise in depression and mental health issues globally. Even as modern and wealthy countries achieve unprecedented levels of progress, it's curious that depression and mental health issues seem to be on the rise. This paradox has led psychologists, including Dr. Stephen Ilardi, to question its causes. Could it be that our modern lifestyles are misaligned with those of our ancestors? Based on this mismatch hypothesis, Dr. Ilardi created a 6-step program to naturally treat depression. This program has shown remarkable success, with a 75.3% success rate for those who follow it for 14 weeks. If you're looking to improve your mental health, Dr. Ilardi's approach offers a promising solution. In this video, you'll learn about Dr. Ilardi's six steps, as well as two additional strategies that have also proven effective to improve your mental health. The Truth About Ketamine: Depression Cure, Health Fad, or Placebo?

One week ago, Matthew Perry's autopsy report came back, finding that the ‘Friends' actor died from the acute effects of ketamine overdose. His death has sharpened focus on the popular and controversial drug. Ketamine has been hailed as a miracle cure for depression and anxiety, criticized as a VC-fueled fad, and investigated as a placebo. But what is ketamine, what is its history, what do we know about how and why it works, and how could it help hundreds of millions of people with depression and anxiety? Today's guest is Boris Heifets. He is an assistant professor of anesthesiology at Stanford University and the author of a much talked about and utterly fascinating study on ketamine that came up with a brilliant way to test the effects of ketamine. The study's surprising results raise big questions about not only ketamine, but the curative power of belief. No one term, diagnosis, or feeling fully encompasses one's essence. And depression is no different. The nature of the feeling, however, is all encompassing. In this episode, I talk about my experience with depression and the tools I've found helpful to get me through the tunnel. All feelings are like waves, they must go up in order to come down, but the ride can certainly be smoother. I reference an amazing book I'm reading right now called No Bad Parts by Richard Schwartz. And I also recommend a book called The Depression Cure by my friend, Stephen Ilardi. A couple of quotes I've been loving: "If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man's life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility." & "I suspect that beneath it all is not an acceptance of but the longing for an acceptance of the elemental interplay between darkness and light, beauty and sorrow, mortality and meaning — the longing we transmute into meaning, that great act of creation." Matthew Thompson is an entrepreneur, host of two podcasts, a father, a husband and a friend. You might remember our interview last year with Dr Steve Ilardi, who is the author of the mega-famous book “The Depression Cure, the 6 step programme to beat depression without drugs- Well, Dr Steve linked myself and Matt together and since then I've learned a lot from him. This is a long conversation but I truly believe there's so much in it. In this podcast, we cover dopamine (Matt has recently interviewed Dopamine expert Dr Anna Lembke), what is in our control and what is not and how delineating this is huge for our mental health. We discuss non-violent communication. We also talk about the need for compassion and confrontation in our relationships and the lifelong work of learning the different combinations of the two we need for the situations we find ourselves in (yes, we allude to the recent Will Smith/ Chris Rick incident). Matt also emphasises the importance of creating a programme for ourselves to help our mental health and committing to the programme as much as we can. This man has come from some very dark lows of depression and addiction and it's fantastic to see him doing so well but for everyone listening, including myself, we can only go one step at a time.Sign up to our Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/earthlydelightspod

Summary: In this episode Jaime and Scott begin by welcoming everyone back and surviving the 2020, along with congratulating everyone for bouncing back from the challenges of what happened in 2020. They bring up the point that it is natural to blame a YEAR (2020) for challenges, and thus putting pressure on another YEAR (2021) to make things better. The truth is, we can take ownership for how we react to these challenges and how we can adjust to a new year. Jaime then defined what “resilience” means from a variety of resources. Scott talked about some of the basic mental needs of each individual that can impact resilience, from Dr. Rick Hanson (the sense of - safety, satisfaction, and connection). Finally, Jaime explains some characteristics of resilient individuals and ways to strengthen resilience.  ACTion Event of the Week: One way that I can strengthen resilience this year? Perhaps one way you can: Be on your own team, and appropriate a situation with appreciation and kindness?  Where do we walk to next?: Stay tuned, for on the next episode of Act To Live, we will get some good feels with the Science of Hugs. Is medication the answer to depression? Not for most people, says guest Stephen S. Ilardi, PhD (author, The Depression Cure: The 6-Step Program to Beat Depression without Drugs), who explains why our own human evolution can teach us why depression occurs, and how we can beat it—for good. 'Tis the season for the "holiday blues" and SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Learn to spot everyday occurrences in your life that are inadvertantly contributing to your blues. This episode features people who have come out of depression in many ways including lifestyle changes, psychotherapy, medication and hypnotherapy. What works? Is there any scientific evidence to support alternative and complementary treatments? Also Dr. Veronica shares her own story of depression and how she overcame it.
