The pressures on public services have been exacerbated by the pandemic. Recruitment and retention of staff is a growing problem, with widespread strikes, backlogs have increased and the public are waiting longer to access support. So what was the pandemic's impact on spending, staff, and service performance? What does rising inflation mean for public service spending? And what impact will the spending announced in the autumn statement have on public services? As the Institute for Government and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy published new analysis on the performance of public services, Nick Davies, Programme Director at the Institute for Government, presented the key findings. He was joined by Stephen Morgan MP, Shadow Minister for Schools, and Aileen Murphie, Honorary Professor at Durham University Business School and Specialist Adviser to the Levelling Up, Housing & Communities Select Committee. David and I had a wonderful conversation. Together we explored his story and experience, particularly his engagement with Celtic spirituality. Using his experiences, David offered some helpful ways to picture liminality, describing it as an “invitation” and “adventure.” David also shared the importance of people and guides along the journey, including the helpful “breadcrumbs” we find along the way. We engaged in an extensive conversation about the changing nature of the workplace and the importance of spirituality and “conscious leadership.” David was a wonderful guest, full of stories and helpful analogies. He also suggested many wonderful resources for understanding liminality, spirituality, and the workplace. I've listed the authors and books he mentioned below. I absolutely loved talking with David, and I'm sure it's a conversation you will love too! Reducing Cost, Risk, and Carbon with Brad Guinane Brad Guinane and Joe Lynch talk about reducing cost, risk, and carbon. Brad is Vice-President of Sales at FreightWaves, a leading freight intelligence provider, offering current digital intelligence and context to the freight community on a central platform. About Brad Guinane Brad Guinane is the Vice-President of Sales at FreightWaves. Brad is an experienced enterprise SaaS sales leader working in the logistics and supply chain industry. Brad began his career in Chicago at a top ranked domestic 3PL. Over the last 4 years, he has expanded upon his logistics knowledge while at FreightWaves and proven to be an integral part of growing the FreightWaves SONAR product offerings and go-to-market team. Prior to his career in logistics & enterprise software, Brad was a college basketball All-American & professional basketball player in the British Basketball League (BBL). Brad is a Michigan native who attended Hillsdale College (B.A. Finance) and received a Masters in Business Administration from Durham University Business School. He resides in Chattanooga, TN with his wife Grace Guinane. About FreightWaves FreightWaves is the leading freight intelligence provider, offering current digital intelligence and context to the freight community on a central platform. FreightWaves’ SaaS product, SONAR, is the leading freight market analytics tool and dashboard, aggregating billions of data points from hundreds of sources to provide the fastest data in the transportation and logistics sector.  FreightWaves.com, the company’s news site, is the leading provider of news and commentary for the transportation and logistics space. FreightWaves also hosts conferences under Transparency and MarketWaves branding and is a co-developer of the first futures contracts dedicated to trucking spot rates. FreightWaves provides the ability to benchmark, analyze, monitor & forecast the $9.6T global logistics industry.  Key Takeaways: Reducing Cost, Risk, and Carbon To reduce cost, risk, and carbon, you need good data which is hard to come by because: The truckload market is huge, lots of different carriers, and lots of different equipment. Data is dirty and old – out of context. Data isn’t in a format that is easy to use – hard to interpret. Even good data isn’t always actionable because of lack of context and market insights. To be successful, carriers, brokers, and shippers need a data partner like FreightWaves. FW collects the data and formats in a way that makes it actionable. FW benchmarks, analyzes, monitors, and forecasts freight analytics so you don’t have to. Analyzing what happened so you can know what might happen next. Cost Users can upload lane and cost data and benchmark themselves against their peers. Understand why you're paying over market price. How are the lanes changing? Are there issues with these lanes? The FW cost intelligence is the starting point for a transparent conversation. Risk Every supply chain professional should be focused on reducing risk. Understand your lanes and what you can do to avoid risks. Capturing the tender rejection. Tender rejection allows you to know what's going on, or that's something wrong in the market. Find disruptions to allow new options and take action. Carbon Brands want and supply chains need to deliver more sustainable supply chains. The first step in lowering carbon impact is measuring it. FW can help transportation and logistics companies identify emissions by lanes and equipment type. Taking the information depending on each equipment to produce the measurements. In this episode, I talk to Professor Julie Hodges of Durham University Business School about how school leaders can lead and sustain successful organisational change within their institutions. Professor Hodges is a worldwide expert on change in organisations, particularly in the role and impact that people play during transformations.I start by asking Professor Hodges for her definition of organisational change and about the different types of change, planned and emergent. We talk about how the global pandemic has driven emergent change within organisations and how some institutions have coped with change better than others. We discuss how the culture of an organisation has an impact on how quickly change can be accepted.I then ask Professor Hodges about challenges with engaging stakeholders, both staff members and individuals in the community, in change. We discuss her tips for encouraging people to become involved in the decision making process. These include giving people the space to voice their opinions, involving people at all levels of an organisation in discussions on change, giving stakeholders ownership of the changes and being transparent about the practicalities of the change.  Finally, we discuss creating trust within an organisation when implementing sustainable change, and Professor Hodges outlines the five principles of engagement: inclusivity, connectivity, transparency, equity and empathy. Spark! episodes of The Independent School Podcast are designed spark fresh insights and innovation, by introducing you to ideas from other sectors.Episode highlightsIntroducing Professor Julie Hodges (01:15)A definition of organisational change (06:04)Emergent change and why we're seeing more of it at the moment (08:00)Tips for engaging stakeholders (10:15)Creating trust through the five principles of engagement (20:30) References and resourcesEpisode 18: Spark!
