It's really about being physically active and going with your peers, right? The mental, emotional, social health. It's not just about the physical activity. We always assume that corporate wellness or works at wellness dollars would be a piece of the business, but it turns out that it was the business. That was the piece, you know, you can't be all things to all people. You got to find one lane and run it. And especially when you're getting that early traction. Once you get the first person in your network that is somehow connected to investors, then almost everyone is now connected to investors. So it took me three degrees to get there. And then from there, it's just literally talking to them about your idea, talking to them about your passion.A mentor of mine always said, nobody can tell the business better than you. You're the founder. You're the CEO. You got where it was going. And you get where it's going now. No one should be able to pitch this business better than you.I think passion is the key. You've got to be passionate. If you're doing this because you have a degree in entrepreneurship or you think startups are cool, you are doomed to fail. If you're really passionate and you're fairly competitive, when you take a loss, it almost energizes you more than those high highs. Embrace the lows and see them as opportunities to get galvanized, to get excited and to figure out whatever it is that gets you back to growing and going. Mentioned Episode: Marc Blumenthal Resource Links:Ed Buckley's Website Peerfit.comLinkedIn        InstagramTwitter  CONNECT WITH MILLION DOLLAR MONDAY!!Follow us on Instagram! |  Follow us on YouTube!

Ed Buckley is the CEO of Peerfit, a company that creates a streamlined way for people to connect their health dollars with fitness experiences people actually want to use. When COVID-19 hit, the company underwent a large restructuring process. Because of the unknown nature of the virus, the company needed something that could provide structure but allowed for flexibility later down the road. This is why Ed decided to work with AgileThought and consultant Christy Erbeck.   In this episode, both Ed and Christy share their 90-day reflections on how agile has worked for Peerfit and what it looks like when decisions are made within teams and not from a sole leader. Ed himself shares how this restructuring has freed him up to think about the future of the company and how the 90-plus employees within the organization are managing the agile framework.   Key Takeaways How AgileThought and Agile are applied in a business setting. What gets you here doesn’t get you there. This year you were forced to take a different approach. Christy, as an outsider, had to come in and really take a top-down approach to see where there was a duplication of efforts and how to streamline Peerfit more effectively. Ed had to reduce his staff by a significant amount due to COVID-19, he was going to lose some key players and needed to adopt a more “fluid” approach in discussion making. When you empower your people, you move faster. Reflections on how Agile has helped Ed’s business Ed feels free and can choose what actions to be involved with vs. letting his team handle it. Ed now has the opportunity to look forward instead of being stuck in his business and being the central point for making all the company’s decisions. Before, the company had very cleared departments or silos. AKA, the sales team, the account management team, etc. Now, they have three North-star teams and each team is attached to one north-star goal. How Peerfit restructured their team It was a messy process trying to figure out who should be on what team. Some team members were afraid that if they weren’t put on the ‘right’ team, they didn’t feel part of the organization. It is definitely a work in progress. However, Ed set up slack channels to help address concerns and keep people within the organization informed on upcoming changes. Clear communication has been key to helping everyone feel at ease and understanding who is on what team. In the beginning, the AgileThought team gave Peerfit a couple of options that they could implement and the pros and cons of each one.   Mentioned in this Episode: Peerfit.com Ed Buckley (LinkedIn) Christy Erbeck (LinkedIn)   Want to Learn More or Get in Touch? #WeGotGoals
Creating a Solution for Workplace Wellness with Peerfit CEO Ed Buckley

When a lifelong learner falls in love with fitness, you get Edward J. Buckley Jr., CEO of Peerfit, a universal account for fitness that is accessed as an employee benefit through major insurance providers. And Buckley and his team didn't just create a better way to do workplace wellness, they did it the hard way - connecting the healthcare and the fitness industries. “How do you build a bridge between traditional healthcare and all the incentives that go in the fitness industry?” Buckley said, "We like to say, 'it's a billion dollar bridge, we'll build it for you.'" After years of work proving out the Peerfit model, the group celebrated signing a contract with its first major insurance carrier. But after the champagne bottles (or matcha, it's a fitness company after all), the carrier told them they needed to renegotiate the contract - or they would "tear the contract up." Overcoming obstacles is a big part of starting a company, but Buckley and team had to fight for their lives. “Put the blinders on and look at the path back up the mountain - not look how far I fell or how could they do this to me," Buckley said. That attitude to learn and work through mistakes came from an overall lifelong thirst to learn - from pursuing his PhD to sending his board of directors more updates than they need. "If you’re constantly getting input and you’re constantly learning, you never really have to have a big learning moment," Buckley said. And to empower his team to learn the same way, Buckley and the company's leadership are less concerned about where their team works and at what hours and are more concerned with rewarding great talent. Peerfit was recently ranked on the 2018 Top Company Cultures List by Entrepreneur, which is a remarkable feat by itself, but even more remarkable when that culture was created entirely digitally. Employees work entirely remotely, which Buckley sees as an advantage to recruit top talent across the country. That sort of innovative business culture led Peerfit to close its recent round of funding - its $8 million series B - and to create a super-secret startup within the startup that Buckley said will help to double Peerfit’s core business. Catch Buckley making a lot of appearances on the company's Instagram and listen to a lot more about his goals - personal and professional - on this week's episode of #WeGotGoals, available anywhere you get your podcasts (like Spotify!). Don’t forget to listen all the way through for a real-life goal getter (and if you want to be featured on the pod as a goal-getter, email Cindy and cindy@asweatlife.com). Feeling generous? What does it take to get into medical school and to excel once you have been admitted? In a live "Office Hours" webcast interview, Dr. Ed Buckley, vice dean for education for Duke's School of Medicine, discusses the MCATs, medical school applications and the future of medical education. Duke's School of Medicine's curriculum differs from some other medical schools. Students study the basic sciences for one year instead of two, giving them the opportunity to devote their entire third year to a scholarly research project. Students care for patients during their second year. In his role as vice dean for education, Buckley oversees the development of the medical school curriculum. He was instrumental in developing the school's new Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans Center for Health Education and has worked closely with the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore to create a research-oriented medical school in Singapore modeled after Duke's curriculum. Buckley, who attended Duke for both undergraduate and medical school, is a professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics and division chief for pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology. His research focuses on treatment of complicated eye muscle problems and congenital cataracts. He has published six books, 35 book chapters and more than 100 peer-reviewed articles. "Office Hours" is Duke's live webcast series for the university community, and others, to engage with professors about their research and scholarship.
