RHLSTP #570 - Spectated Spaghetti Bolognaise - As the Edinburgh Fringe approaches, Richard is at the Bill Murray comedy club in Islington to talk to one of the founders of the club and the artist formerly known as Lionel Richie, Barry Ferns. They discuss the formation of this hub of comedy creativity and Richard's part in it (not that he remembers), which Bill Murray it's named after and what they will do if the other Bill Murray ever turns up. Barry chats about his Edinburgh Fringe show “My Seven Years as Lionel Richie” https://www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/barry-ferns-my-seven-years-as-lionel-richie and the many other self-destructive comedic decisions he has made, how Edinburgh left him bankrupt and homeless, how he convinced tourists they could go inside Arthur's Seat and how his commitment to the bit led to him losing paid employment. In many ways he is a fucking idiot, but a glorious one.See Barry's Edinburgh show https://www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/barry-ferns-my-seven-years-as-lionel-richieCheck out what's on at the Bill Murray here https://www.angelcomedy.co.uk/See RHLSTP at the Edinburgh Fringe https://richardherring.com/rhlstpt/tourSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELBecome a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITE See details of the RHLSTP LIVE DATES Buy DVDs and books from GO FASTER STRIPE Hosted on Acast. Now wait a minute. (Bryan) has a sudden work obligation and can only stay for the introduction (such is the life of a Hollywood A-Lister), but boy is he missing out. We suppose it's only fair, though, since Ronna missed out the first time this absolute literary legend was previously in The Carriage House. Joining us this week is the Queen herself, Susan Orlean! Of course you know Susan as the best-selling author of THE ORCHID THIEF, which was adapted into the Academy Award winning film ADAPTATION with Meryl Streep. She's also the author of THE LIBRARY BOOK as well as a staff writer for THE NEW YORKER. Her new book, JOYRIDE, comes out in October! You can also find her Substack at susanorlean.substack.com Susan and Ronna tackle one question this week, but it's a Dooze McBooze involving someone coming into a large inheritance debating how, or even whether, to help their less well-off siblings. (Bryan)'s Edinburgh show, ARE YOU MAD AT ME, is coming up at the end of the month and plays the Edinburgh Fringe for most of August. Are you going to be anywhere near Scotland in August? Go see (Bryan)! Tickets at bryansafi.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

One-Act Play Collections - Book 12, Part 3 Title: One-Act Play Collections - Volume 12 Overview: Here are 10 One-Act Plays for your enjoyment. They range from a 1659 farce by Moliere to an 1896 play by Fuller with early LGBT content; a Gilbert play without Sullivan's music, and many other short gems to make you laugh, cry, think, or all three. A one-act play is a play that has only one act and is distinct from plays that occur over several acts. One-act plays may consist of one or more scenes. The 20-40 minute play has emerged as a popular subgenre of the one-act play, especially in writing competitions. One-act plays make up the overwhelming majority of Fringe Festival shows including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The origin of the one-act play may be traced to the very beginning of recorded Western drama: in ancient Greece, Cyclops, a satyr play by Euripides, is an early example. The satyr play was a farcical short work that came after a trilogy of multi-act serious drama plays. A few notable examples of one-act plays emerged before the 19th century including various versions of the Everyman play and works by Moliere and Calderon. One act plays became more common in the 19th century and is now a standard part of repertory theatre and fringe festivals. The latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast is the first of our Edinburgh Fringe Festival Previews, where Ali talks to a few of the artists who will be appearing at the festival this year. The three shows discussed this time around are all part of the Made In Scotland Showcase, which has come to be a reliable mark of quality. First of all, Christine Thynne and Robbie Synge talk about These Mechanisms, "[...] a show treading the lines between dance, physical theatre, object manipulation and contemporary circus."Then Scottish dancer, choreographer, and multi-disciplinary artist Mark Bleakley discusses Stepping in… Spilling out which "[...] roots itself in Bleakley's personal history of dance practice in Bboying (Breakdancing) and House to traverse the interlinking people, spaces, and memories that make up stepping as a culturally, historically, and emotionally layered motion."Finally, Indra Wilson talks about FLOAT, "a new autobiographical solo show about the lonely turbulence of experiencing pregnancy loss as a young queer person."These podcasts are always a joy to record and get just a taste of what's happening in Edinburgh this August, and we hope they get you in the mood for this year's Fringe. For full details, including all the ways to listen, head over to scotswhayhae.com

RHLSTP #569 - Round the Corner… - Rich is back at the Podcast Room to talk to stand up and non-puppeteer Glenn Moore. They talk about being the originator of one of the finest poems in the English language, strained relationships to famous people, how to run the Fringe Gauntlet, is it better to have accommodation in the heart of the Fringe or down by the seaside or top and tailing with two other men, the many wonderful titles of Glenn's shows and whether he'd dare do a two word version, more about Hurstpierpoint than any other podcast will ever give you, needlessly making an enemy of Dave Berry, Richard pretending to be called Sally to get across America after nearly being burned to death, looking like all the Beatles and is Richard picturing (or failing to) the right line-up for Scouting For Girls. Also what is it like to be one of the only colour blind comedians in the world. Possibly. Today's episode should be called 'Return of the Petts', because seasoned detective Chloe Petts decided to pop into DWSC HQ once more to help us solve a crime or two. Luckily for us, our guest had another criminal act to report, and it's not that we once again made Chloe record with us during a heatwave. The team then talks about the role tap dancing can play in crime, and how to shut a circus. Finally, our listener crime proves that toddlers are really just drunk adults in disguise, plus we find out what Hannah overheard at soft play... Ed Night is one of the sharpest and most original voices in British stand-up. He began performing comedy as a teenager and, in 2017 his debut hour at the Edinburgh Fringe, Anthem For Doomed Youth, saw him become one of the youngest ever nominees for the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer. Since then, he's established a reputation for his darkly funny, politically charged material. His writing has been featured on shows including The Mash Report, 8 out of 10 Cats, The News Quiz, Mock the Week, and Comedy Central's Roast Battle, on which he also appeared. With a style that veers from laid-back charm to blistering satire, he's become a cult favourite on the live circuit and beyond, and is about to embark on a new tour.Become a My Perfect Console supporter and receive a range of benefits at www.patreon.com/myperfectconsole Hosted on Acast. One-Act Play Collections - Book 12, Part 1 Title: One-Act Play Collections - Volume 12 Overview: Here are 10 One-Act Plays for your enjoyment. It's mostly lollipops, ribbons and cakes for Clive Anderson this week as he meets Bake Off host Mel Giedroyc, Jane Austen improviser Rachel Parris and Romantic Novelist Mike Gayle (the only man to win the Romantic Writers Association's top award). But not all....Mel Giedroyc's new podcast - and she emphasises it's a comedy one - is taking over from Kathy Burke on Where There's a Will There's a Wake - all about death, funerals and everything in between. She reveals how she and Sue Perkins met and unsurprisingly enough it was love-friends at first sight. Rachel Parris is taking Austentacious, her improv show based on Jane Austen, on the road and to Edinburgh Fringe again. She explains why nothing quite hits the spot like Jane. But she's also written a novel based on the romance between Pride and Prejudice character Charlotte Lucas and Mr Collins. And reader, Eliza Bennett does not come out of this well. Mike Gayle is the only man the Romantic Writers Association has bestowed its Outstanding Achievement Award upon and is a bestselling novelist. He describes his favourite reader letter from when he worked as an Agony Uncle for Bliss Magazine back in the day.All accompanied by the glorious sound of Debbie Wiseman's music for the TV series Wolf Hall, played by the composer herself with the Locrian Ensemble of London, soprano Grace Davidson and Alec Harmon on Cor Anglais.Presented by Clive Anderson Producer Olive Clancy

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by national treasure, showrunner, comic and musician JORDAN GRAY!Pip and Jordan have been pals for a lot of years, and many of you will likely have heard Jordan appear on this very podcast since the 20-teens. The first episode was a pivotal one which is often refered back to with a number of teachable moments that echoed over the years, but whatever your perspective - Jordan's been putting in the work creatively, socially and mentally. With her Edinburgh Fringe show 'Is That A Cock In Your Pocket Or Are You Just Here To Kill Me' featuring this year, and the hit show 'Transaction' on TV, things are looking lovely - but as you'll hear, this stuff doesn't just happen. You knew that of course. But for real - it is a grind. She and Pip expound on such items as memories and place, compartmentalising, PR glow ups, prepping and ironing out a show, gauging audience temperatures, death threats, the good old toilet debate, the difficult world of Harry Potter, and many such ports of call - but all with a strength and positivity that is hard to not be influenced by.
