On this week's Pixels & Ink Podcast: Brendan, Chris, Dayna and Jordan sit down to talk about Elon Musk trying to buy Twitter, and the potential ramifications of that purchase—having left Twitter for good, Jordan is pretty ambivalent towards it. Afterwards, they talk about the Square Enix's 20th Anniversary of Kingdom Hearts, and the surprise reveal of Kingdom Hearts VI—Jordan spoils the ending to the terrible plot of the three year-old game. Afterwards, they talk about the surprise announcement of No Man's Sky's Outlaw update; which adds new features and areas to the game. The gang looks back a bit on No Man's Sky, and how genuine their commitment to building the game to its initial vision is. They also talk briefly about Aspyr purchasing Beamdog and how Epic games received $2 billion dollars from Sony and Epic. How they plan to use that money is anyone's guess. In the review section: Dayna has been watching Single Drunk Female, Brendan watched Russian Doll: Season 2; and Jordan watched Sonic the Hedgehog 2!

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we return to our series on Baldur's Gate with an interview with James Ohlen, who was lead designer on the title. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Podcast breakdown: 0:50 Interview 52:50 Break 53:21 Outro Issues covered: starting a comic book store at 19 right before the market crashed, the origin of Minsc, starting at BioWare, building an IP bible as a way to start, working the killer hours and becoming the lead designer, putting in the 25000 hours, getting lucky and selling millions of copies, the impossibility of faking love, the choice between real-time and turn-based leading to pause-and-play, being delayed by Diablo, having contributions from everyone for design, sharing credit, feeling of playing D&D more important than perfect translation, balancing being easy due to so many party members, feeling smart, finding patterns in your party, relying on save and load, random numbers, the team testing the game, using characters from the binder, finding the voice for Minsc, writers taking ownership of voice, the passing of a player, bringing in characters from more players, growing the Sword Coast, staying away from the main space others were used, the perks of working for Wizards, four types of player, learning to respect player types, the end of a game being less tested, fighting the "dumbing down" due to overplay, engaging with the community, Karzak the Half-Orc and Gromnir and criticism, incorporating another player's character in to some coming work, caring so much for the license, being able to put infinite hours in. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we conclude our series on Baldur's Gate. We talk takeaways and then clean up a very full mailbag. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Leora Kornfeld sits down with Alberta-based producer Andrew Scholotiuk and director Dylan Pearce to discuss virtual production techniques. The pair has been working on the merging of the physical and digital worlds for years and share their advice and experience as interconnectedness and collaboration are increasingly hot commodities in the film industry.Special effects that create computer-generated characters and backgrounds are found everyday in the gaming world and they have been standard fare in higher end Hollywood productions for years. But now, using a combination of more affordable technologies and open source real time 3D game engines as a foundation, these techniques are starting to move closer to mainstream film production. As the film and TV world meets the game world with the help of networked laptops, the possibilities in terms of creation become endless. Our guests, Andrew Scholotiuk and Dylan Pearce have a sizable portfolio of feature films, TV shows, and games to their credit, including a Lumiere Award for advancements and innovation in digital filmmaking. They are currently developing a new virtual production pipeline at Beamdog, an Edmonton-based gaming company. The latest headlines & happenings in Edmonton's tech community. This week: A new algorithm developed by University of Alberta computing scientists promises to make Bitcoin mining more energy-efficient; Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi says there are real opportunities for the Alberta Innovation Corridor; FORGE Hydrocarbons has received an equity investment from Shell Ventures; Beamdog is featured by Edmonton Global; CWB is launching a conversational AI-powered banking tool; and female tech entrepreneurs are recognized in the 2020 AWE Awards.
The adventurers have passed through a portal to an alien world seeking a fragment of a magical wand. This world is built on the inside of a giant torus, and teeming with strange creatures from across the multiverse. That's right, listeners, we're in Sigil, the city at the center of the planes! Sigil was created for the 2nd Edition AD&D Planescape campaign setting, and was the setting for the classic CRPG "Planescape: Torment". It's weird and twisted and more than a little disconcerting. If you haven't played Planescape: Torment, you really should! Beamdog has an "enhanced" edition available on Steam, GOG, Android, and iOS. You can also find the classic 2nd Edition Planescape books on dmsguild.com and drivethrurpg.com.
Today’s Hook: A visitor claiming to be a historian from the future is here to observe the great heroes that helped shape his civilization. Details surrounding the PCs’ demise are the parts he’s hoping to gain historical clarification on What would you do if you absolutely idolized your older brother… but he suddenly vanished and now you and your friends are the only people who can even remember he ever existed? If it was a brotherly love, like that of Boromir and Faramir… you’d totally freak out, right? And that’s not even the half of it, as this week the Adventure Hook guys use the powers of time travel to turn back the clock to that most eerie and mysterious age… the 1980s! And of course your two GMs bring a few Lovecraftian concepts along for good measure. Hide that “Cthulhu shit” you learned at Miskatonic University in your Trapper-Keeper… because things are about to get weird… like, totally Eighties weird… Childhood friends united by their shared “lack of experiences” must use various different forms of time travel to unravel (or perhaps re-knit together) the tangles of their fractured memories… From a Carter family heirloom with unlimited Astral potential, to a consciousness projecting temporal drug, to good ol’ fashioned Hypnosis… all may be needed by our band of nerds to keep the Silver Man, the Man in the Brown Van, and the Man in the Round Room each from staying one step ahead of those pesky 5thdimensional “time wolves”. Which begs the question… what’s the angle of creating a room with no angles? Does that all sound batshit crazy to you? Then you must be reading the show notes before listening to the show, because believe us that all completely and totally makes perfect sense by the end of the episode. Especially if you consider the Mandela Effect we discuss in Episode 29: Full Disclosure… Plus… please enjoy Aaron reminiscing about the halcyon days of his youth, where once (during one of those long 80’s summers) he tried to incite his own Satanic Panic upon his sleepy, unsuspecting neighborhood. And later, Rob reminds Aaron for the umpteenth time he doesn’t actually watch Star Trek… but based on his latest Discovery Season 2 spoilers (warning!) he probably should… Unless you aren’t actually reading the show notes first… in which case that Spoiler Warning isn’t much help… Banter Topic: Adventure Hook is switching to an archival model on Patreon, and the guys talk about those details a wee bit (including some of their favorite past projects) before also discussing the comics professional’s perspective on Aaron’s new Hellblazer #1 issue landing the cover of Previews! In this episode, Jean the Strategy Wargamer sits down with the producer of the recently released Axis & Allies 1942 Online, Cody Ouimet. In the final installment of this classic Planescape adventure, our characters face a series of terrifying challenges, each more horrific than the last… all in the desperate hope that they might finally escape from the plane of Baator and perhaps even one day to find a portal that will eventually lead them back to their home world. But, how many more of their dwindling numbers will the Nine Hells ultimately claim before they even have a prayer of safely setting foot upon the streets of Sigil: the City of Doors...? Abandon all hope, ye who exit here. But first, please enjoy Mattiaz’s dramatic reading of excerpts from his character background that was provided to each player prior to gameplay. And special thanks to Jenny Randle for voicing Shaaraxxis, called “Stormsong”! If you prefer to just jump forward to the actual-play action, please skip ahead to 18:30. This episode features music from the enhanced soundtrack of the classic video game Planescape: Torment created by Black Isle Studios (music composed by Mark Morgan) and provided courtesy of the fine folks at Beamdog. In the penultimate installment of this classic Planescape adventure, our characters set forth with the new knowledge that they have obtained concerning the method and means to finally facilitate their escape from the dreaded plane of Baator. But… will they be able to find their way safely along the river Styx, or will the horrific denizens of the Nine Hells prove to be their final undoing? But first, please enjoy Craig’s dramatic reading of excerpts from his character background that was provided to each player prior to gameplay. And special thanks to Jenny Randle for voicing Vanel Harper! If you prefer to just jump forward to the actual-play action, please skip ahead to 17:30. In the fifth installment of this classic Planescape adventure, our characters must traverse the hellish plane of Baator to find (and then barter for) the keys to their escape from the fabled Pillar of Skulls… though how could they ever hope to trust something actually comprised of the souls of dead sages who in life had lied for a living? But first, please enjoy Hjalmar and Aaron’s dramatic reading of excerpts from their character backgrounds given to each of them prior to gameplay. And special thanks to Jenny Randle for voicing Lady Maje Harkadies, Shaaraxxis (called “Stormsong”), and Vanel Harper! In the fourth installment of this classic Planescape adventure, our characters must wade through a river of blood… in this particular case: literally! And all on the blind hope that they will eventually be able to trade something of theirs for the information they need to escape the hellish plane of Baator… and that from a very dubious vendor indeed... But first, please enjoy Mattiaz’s dramatic reading of excerpts from his character background that was provided to each player prior to gameplay. In the third installment of this classic Planescape adventure, our characters begin to take in the full scope of the truly terrifying obstacles that lie ahead of them… and yet, the challenges of this literal hellscape may pale in comparison to the challenges that face each man’s personal journey… But first, please enjoy Hjalmar’s dramatic reading of excerpts from his character background that was provided to each player prior to gameplay. And special thanks to Jenny Randle for voicing Lady Maje Harkadies and Shaaraxxis, called “Stormsong”! If you prefer to just jump forward to the actual-play action, please skip ahead to 17:00. One of our absolute favorite settings for Dungeons & Dragons is undoubtedly Planescape. The twisting, dark streets of the city of Sigil, the beauty and weirdness of the multiverse and the horrors of the nine hells all come together in to a wonderful whole that has enchanted us since playing Planescape: Torment back in the nineties. Together with our friends at Adventure Hook and Blackspire Studios we have created this actual play of the classic Planescape adventure “To Ba’ator and Back” which is featured in the “Well of Worlds” module. We are playing AD&D 2nd edition and the adventure begins in Blackspire’s world Terregastia, where a manhunt is under way. Production has been done by the talented Robert Randle at Blackspire and you are in for a real treat over the coming seven weeks. One of the most exciting things about this project is that Beamdog have kindly given us permission to use the original soundtrack for Planescape: Torment. This is a true honor and really helps set the right tone. Thank you! We also used music by Metatron Omega, Halgrath, Flowers for Bodysnatchers and Atrium Carceri. As always huge thanks to Cryo Chamber for their kindness in allowing us to use their material. Today, David is the creative director at Beamdog, helping to bring enhanced editions of some of the games he worked on back in his Bioware days to modern hardware and audiences. It wouldn’t be Halloween if we didn’t put a little scare in ya, right? Rest assured, the image above is not a sign that the ironically named legend in vaporware known as the Phantom Console is making a comeback, it’s just a nod to our big topic for this week: Digital Downloads. As it turns out, conceptually the Phantom was onto something, regardless of how nonexistent their hardware really was, and services like Steam, OnLive, Xbox Live Arcade and more have finally delivered on that promise of never having to leave your home to purchase a new game. More impressively, services like Beamdog, Good Old Games and Steam offer hundreds of titles that many of us cut our teeth on and let us relive our past glories in games like MDK2 HD and the Ultima series. In this week’s podcast, we examine how digital distribution has become entrenched in gaming, pushing the market into new and exciting places, and to help us out we asked Trent Oster (one of the co-founders of Bioware currently one of the heads of the digital distribution service Beamdog) and staff writer Victor Grunn to join us. Happy Halloween!
