Have you had to—or are you contemplating—giving up running because of injury and/or chronic pain? The Final Finish Line, a special four-part series, will be cathartic and helpful as you figure out your next steps. In episode #2, Dimity talks to runner Gretchen Gibson, who had a knee and hip replacement within six months of each other, and Dr. Dan Myer, her orthopedic surgeon, who also remodeled his running career after serious injury. The trio cover: How Gretchen's torn meniscus was actually a short-term problem on top of a long-term problem; Why Dan always asks a patient, “What is the goal here?”; The reason Dan (gently) suggested Gretchen find another athletic passion; How Gretchen, who has crossed 15 half marathon and 2 marathon finish lines, is coping without running; Where Gretchen is currently finding some sweaty and satisfying success. In the monthly Nourished on the Run segment, Ellie Kempton, MS, RDN, and Dimity cover the basics of blood sugar: what it is, why it matters (to everyone, not just diabetics), and a few easy ways to keep yours more stable. In the first of a 2-part weight-loss series: Sarah and Dimity chat with two real-world mother runners about their weight-management concerns, plus the duo are joined by registered dietitian Ellie Kempton, who weighs in with insight and advice. The first guest is Jennifer Summers, a nurse and a mom of one, who is infuriated by her belly fat. Jennifers laments how she made herself miserable logging calories. She details her numerous attempts to drop some pounds, saying, “everything worked for a little bit, but nothing was something I could maintain for the rest of my life.” She also talks about the loss of mental focus and “estrogen-oomph” she felt while riding the menopause rollercoaster. Ellie talks at length about the importance of looking “one layer deeper at the hormonal symphony,” which Dimity quickly re-dubs a “cacophony.” (Well played, Dim!) After explaining why stress can have such a negative impact on weight, Ellie shares numerous tips for managing stress in everyday life. The final guest is Emily Cooley, a Colorado mom of two whose doctor told her about three years ago that she was morbidly obese. In a one-on-one conversation with Dimity (due to technical difficulties), Emily details how she lost 100 pounds in a university weight-loss study—and how she’s kept the weight off in the ensuing 3+ years. The Coloradans talk about Emily’s upcoming training for her first marathon. In the intro, the SBS and Dim talk about the latest goings-on of their artistically inclined teen sons. The weight-loss conversation begins at 14:15. Make over your beauty routine with Wander Beauty! Save 20% at wanderbeauty.com/amr Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Holiday nutrition advice: Sarah and co-host Ellison Weist tuck into a conversation with Ellie Kempton, a Denver-based holistic nutritionist and the official nutritionist of the Train Like a Mother Club. A big believer in “simple advice and cues,” Ellie shares five strategies for surviving the holiday season, including a few that might surprise you. She laughs at how she taught herself to become a slow eater (it’s a method that we suspect might work for many mother runners!). Find out what Ellie refers to as “bubble wrap” as you head to a party, and get advice on how to fill an entree plate once you get there. She encourages gals to eat with gusto instead of fear, saying the holidays need to be about renewal not depletion. The conversation wraps up with the three gals take a deep dive into something called “oil pulling” (who knew?!). Fresh off a visit to Connecticut, Sarah shares a family update—and talks up a chicken recipe she cooked for her clan. And, as promised, here’s the PDF of Ellie talked up...
