Will a scathing document dump be the final knockout punch for Premier's Ford? From Environmental Defense: “Released by Ontario's Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing as a result of a series of freedom of information requests show that it was partisan Minister's Office staff — not civil service experts — who directed changes to municipal  Official Plans in ways that favoured select landowners and sprawl developers. “The documents also show that their lands were designated for development despite being rejected by both municipal planners and provincial Municipal Affairs planning experts. The documents also offer evidence that Ministers' offices, other than that of Housing Minister Steve Clark, were involved as early as January 2022, prior to the June 2022 election, and yet the government still kept Ontario voters in the dark.”We unpack this story with Phil Pothen, Ontario Environment Program Manager for Environmental Defense.Follow Environmental Defense @envirodefence #hamont #ontario #ford #premierdougford #conservative #greenbelt #ontariopc #billkellypodcast #billkelly #urbanboundary #environmentaldefense Listen to this podcast everywhere:https://kite.link/the-bill-kelly-podcastFollow Environmental Defense @envirodefence Watch the interview by subscribing to our YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@TheBillKellyPodcastSubscribe to my Substack for free news updates straight to your inbox and exclusive paid contentbillkelly.substack.comConnect with me on socials: @ThisIsBillKellyhttps://twitter.com/ThisIsBillKellyhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/thisisbillkelly/https://www.instagram.com/thisisbillkelly/ Get full access to Bill Kelly's Substack at billkelly.substack.com/subscribe

Air pollution, both visible and hidden, poses a critical global threat to health and prosperity, causing over 7 million annual deaths worldwide, a number on the rise. It encompasses indoor and outdoor contamination from various sources, including vehicle emissions, industrial processes, and natural events. Nearly all of the global population breathes polluted air, with low- and middle-income countries facing the highest exposures.  Air pollution's hazardous components include vehicle emissions, volatile organic compounds, and fine particulate matter. Notably, it intertwines with climate change due to shared sources like fossil fuel combustion. The health impacts are vast and expanding as research continues, affecting organs and systems far beyond respiratory issues. Even developed countries grapple with air quality concerns, while developing nations face intensified pollution due to rapid industrialization.  Over two million annual premature deaths are attributed to air pollution. Its effects range from common diseases to nervous, digestive, and urinary system impairments. Though strides are made in the struggle against pollution, no safe threshold has been determined. Solutions exist, such as transitioning to renewable energy and electric vehicles, but the journey requires global commitment. Today, we delve into these strategies with our esteemed guests, aiming to uncover ways to reduce air pollution's health and environmental impacts.  Mark Ereth, formerly with the Mayo Clinic, Joel Schwartz with Harvard T.S.Chan School of Public Health and Sarah Vogel with the Environmental Defense fund talk with Host Bernice Butler about why we should care about the chronic disease  toll of air pollution. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/healthy-radio/support

This week on Open Sources Guelph, we've got déjà vu, or should we say, "déjà coup". A lot of people have made that joke, so let's talk about the very serious issues behind that with some concerning recent undemocratic events in Brazil. We will also talk about one of Scotty's favourite issues, rich people having too much money! In the back half of the show, we're going to talk to the man who might be the most obsessively environmental person in Ontario politics not named Mike. This Thursday, January 5, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Breakin' 2: Electric Coup-aloo. A president unbound by reality or the rule of law, backed by rich and nefarious far-right forces, calls an election fraudulent and his followers storm the capital in a shocking act of political violence on a January afternoon. Sound familiar? The setting this time was Brazil, and though Jair Bolsonaro's been in self-imposed exile in Florida, the threat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his behalf had a lot of echos from January 6, 2021 in Washington D.C. Are far-right insurrections now global? All the Money in the World. Just after the start of the second work day of 2023, Canada's richest CEOs had already made as much as money as most of the workers will all year. A new report from the Canadian Centre For Policy Alternatives fanned the flames by announcing that the 100 highest paid CEOs in Canada were paid a staggering 243 times what the average Canadian worker took home last year. As moneyed sources warn us constantly about a recession, we'll talk about the real sources of inequality. 50 Tirades of Gray. The Ontario Legislature won't be in session again until after Family Day, but the adversaries of Premier Doug Ford aren't taking a break. One of those adversaries, Environmental Defense executive director Tim Gray, joins us this week to talk about his group's push to investigate the Greenbelt deal with developers, their new lawsuit defending the council approved municipal boundaries in Hamilton and other environmental fights that Gray's group is taking right to Ford's front door. Just in time for this podcast, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released another report last week, which was described by UN Secretary-General as "an atlas of human suffering and a damning indictment of failed climate leadership." So what's the current provincial government's record on fighting climate change, and with an election that's now less than three months away? The Provincial government under Premier Doug Ford has been very active on the environmental file, from dismantling the province's clean energy initiatives to MZOs, but is any of that going to matter when it's time to vote? The provincial response to the COVID-19 pandemic will undoubtedly be *the* issue of the 2022 Provincial Election, but that doesn't mean that environmental issues should be ignored. Of course, these issues have been discussed in the media, and among environmental activism groups, not to mention inside the halls of Queen's Park. The Auditor General reported back in November that in two years the Ontario government had only completed six of 22 recommendations to improve climate outcomes, so if you feel like the Ford government is not committed to fighting climate change, you're not alone. This week we're joined by one of the people who's very concerned about that lack of action. Keith Brooks, Programs Director for Environmental Defence, will join us to talk about what grade he's giving the Ford government and whether climate change is going to be a big enough issue in the coming election. He will also talk about the the different topics under the environmental file and where the Ford government is most vulnerable. And finally, he will discuss lessons learned from the pandemic about fighting climate change, and what Environmental Defense will be doing before June 2. So let's talk about the Ontario government's report card on environmental issues in this edition of the Guelph Politicast! To learn more about Environmental Defence and their various programs and advocacy efforts, you can find them online. To learn more about environmental issues, and their bearing on the upcoming provincial election, Guelph Wellington Coalition for Social Justice will be dedicating one of their Informed Democracy town halls to that topic, and it will be on Wednesday April 20. How do we get climate at the forefront of politics? How can we good data influence the climate transition? In the first episode of the second season of Cleaning Up, Michael Liebreich speaks to Bryony Worthington: a crossbench member of the House of Lords, founder of Ember, and the lead author of the 2008 UK Climate Change Act. Summary: Baroness Bryony Worthington is a Crossbench member of the House of Lords, who has spent her career working on conservation, energy and climate change issues. Bryony Worthington was appointed as a Life Peer in 2011. Her current roles include co-chairing the cross-party caucus Peers for the Planet in the House of Lords and Co-Director of the Quadrature Climate Foundation. Her opus magnum is the 2008 Climate Change Act which she wrote as the lead author. She piloted the efforts on this landmark legislation – from the Friends of the Earth’s ‘Big Ask’ campaign all the way through to the parliamentary works. This crucial legislation requires the UK to reduce its carbon emissions to a level of 80% lower than its 1990 emissions. She founded the NGO Sandbag in 2008, now called Ember. It uses data insights to advocate for a swift transition to clean energy. Between 2016 and 2019 she was the executive director for Europe of the Environmental Defense. Prior to that she worked with numerous environmental NGOs. Baroness Bryony Worthington read English Literature at Cambridge University. The history of the land in the United States is one of ERASURE; of the genocide of indigenous people, and of the legacies of people of color using, nourishing and shaping the environment. I’ll trace how that forced absence leads to a lack of “diversity” in parks today. Why are only white people (check out the Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, Environmental Defense fund) the most visible experts and stewards of nature? What stories are we telling about people of color in our parks? The experience of nature is far from neutral. Produced by Shirley Wang
