The legend of the ANZACs was born not through victory, but through courage, endurance, and mateship under fire. From the rocky shores of Gallipoli to the muddy battlefields of the Western Front, Australian and New Zealand troops earned a reputation for resilience, resourcefulness, and unbreakable spirit.Though the Gallipoli campaign ended in withdrawal, the actions of the ANZACs forged a national identity that continues to shape Australia and New Zealand today. Their story is one of hardship, sacrifice, and a legacy that lives on more than a century later. Join Holly & Matthew as they explore the birth of the ANZAC legend and its lasting impact on national memory.***"And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" (1971) written and performed by Eric Bogle. This modern folk ballad reflects on the devastating human cost of war, particularly the Gallipoli campaign, through the eyes of a wounded Australian veteran. Written by Scottish-born Australian singer-songwriter Eric Bogle (b. 1944), the song became a poignant anti-war anthem, contrasting sharply with earlier patriotic tunes. It has been widely covered and remains a powerful meditation on memory, sacrifice, and the price of national mythmaking.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/weird-crap-in-australia--2968350/support.

Mick has discovered an excellent book - “The Number Ones – Twenty chart-topping hits that reveal the history of pop music” by Tom Breihan (Hachette Books, NY) - one of the best books ever written on how songs get, or don't get, to the top of the charts. Gems from the book include: The Miracles' “Shop Around”, Motown's first hit, was kept out of the top spot by "Calcutta" by Lawrence Welk (Who? WTF?) “The Twist”, by Chubby Checker, led to a wave of “Twist”-labelled hits. Except that, in this case, it was made “nicer” for white audiences, so that white DJs would play it. The first “rap” single to top the charts was “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice, in a story with more twists than an Agatha Christie novel! All the money Vanilla Ice made from his hit was gobbled up by lawyers for David Bowie & Queen! Human League's “Don't You Want Me, Baby?” became a breakthrough hit simply because MTV needed video clips when they started up, and most existing bands weren't set up to provide them. Our album you must hear before you die (with thanks to Robert Dimery) is The Pogues' “Rum, Sodomy and the Lash” from 1985. The title is based on Winston Churchill's quote that “English Naval tradition was nothing but rum, sodomy and the lash.” Elvis Costello, who produced the album, saw his role as capturing the Pogues' “dilapidated glory”, with the band heavily influenced by alcohol, and their name meaning, in Gaelic, “Pogue mahone”, or “up your arse”! Musical gems abound on the album, not least in Ewan MacColl's “Dirty Old Town”, and Eric Bogle's “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” (listed as one of the 30 Greatest Australian songs of all time). We love The Pogues, and you should, too. Jeff has uncovered some gems from the mind of Donald Trump and his supporters, as well as discovering that the man has an ego bigger than the most deranged rock star. Another jam-packed episode! _______________________________________________________________ Books “The Number Ones. Scott and Sean are joined by Andrew in third chair. We discuss The Pogues' 1985 cover of And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda. The song while fictional, details the horrific slaughter wreaked upon ANZAC soldiers during the WWI Gallipoli Campaign in 1915. The song begs the question of a soldier's sacrifice and what was it all for? Originally written during the Vietnam War but set during The Great War, Eric Bogle's 1971 ballad treating the ultimate sacrifices paid by Australia's young men, was movingly covered by The Pogues (and many others), is anti-war but not anti-soldier. Heartbreaking in its realism and portrayal of lost and wasted youth, this is definitely a piece that will stick with you for a long time. Give it a listen! 25 kwietnia w Australii i Nowej Zelandii obchodzone jest narodowe święto - ANZAC Day. Dzień ten upamiętnia krwawą batalię pod Gallipoli podczas I wojny światowej. 25 kwietnia 1915 roku wojska Ententy rozpoczęły desant na półwysep Gallipoli nad cieśniną Dardanele. Uderzenie to miało otworzyć flocie aliantów drogę do Morza Czarnego, a w efekcie umożliwić zdobycie Konstantynopola i wykluczenie imperium osmańskiego z wojny. Na drodze aliantów stanęła niespodziewanie silna i waleczna armia dowodzona przez Mustafę Kemala, którego dziś znamy jako Ataturka, twórcę nowoczesnego pastwa tureckiego. Bitwa zaplanowana jako błyskawiczna przekształciła się w ośmiomiesięczną batalię pozycyjną. Nie przyniosła państwom Ententy oczekiwanych rezultatów, natomiast pochłonęła wiele tysięcy ofiar po obu stronach. W bitwie pod Gallipoli swój chrzest bojowy przeszły połączone siły zbrojne Australii i Nowej Zelandii, z angielska zwane Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, czyli w skrócie właśnie ANZAC. Jednostka poniosła ciężkie straty, na półwyspie zginęło blisko 9 tysięcy Australijczyków i 3 tys. Nowozelandczyków. Informacje o bitwie o Gallipoli wywołały na Antypodach niezwykłe poruszenie, wkrótce ukształtowała się legenda ANZAC. Zmieniły postrzeganie przez Australijczyków i Nowozelandczyków historii i teraźniejszości. Legendzie ANZAC przypisuje się zbudowanie psychologicznej niezależności tych narodów, i otwarcie drogi do zbudowania niezależnych państw, choć będących częścią brytyjskiej wspólnoty. Na cześć bohaterstwa żołnierzy ANZAC, 25 kwietnia jest od 1916 roku obchodzony jako święto narodowe zwane właśnie ANZAC Day. W 1971 roku Eric Bogle, szkocki emigrant, poruszony trwającą w Wietnamie wojną napisał do niej swój muzyczny komentarz. I dlatego gdy ERIC BOGLE w swojej piosence opowiada historię wojenną młodego chłopca, w refrenie w tle kapela gra zawsze Wędruj z Matyldą. Audycja zawiera utwory: "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" w wykonaniu Erica Bogle'a, słowa i muzyka: Eric Bogle @jarasaseasongi znajdziesz na Facebooku i YouTube

A question, or a statement of intent? A bit of both I suppose. Lots of music by artists coming to town in the next few weeks, and plenty of new releases too. Also R.I.P. John Munro, longtime sidekick of Australian-Scots songwriter Eric Bogle.
Welcome to Episode 1 of Speak About The Spark. Who better to have as our first guest than Eric Bogle? Eric has written some of the most well known songs of the past 40 years including "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and "No Man's Land ( The Green Fields of France)" but if you delve a little deeper into his catalogue you will find plenty of gems. His new album "Voices" proves that his songwriting is as good, if not better, than ever. There's plenty of clips on YouTube and his music is available to buy from http://www.greentrax.com. There is no official website for Eric and no Social Media links which in this day and age is unheard of but that's just the way he likes it. You can find more info on the various matters that Eric discussed at www.createschool.ie/Spark. You can reach Peter Baxter on www.twitter.com/PeterMBaxter or www.facebook.com/PeterMBaxter. There are more guests recorded and lined up over the coming months and please get in touch if you have any suggestions or comments. Worth noting that while this is our pilot podcast, it is Eric's as well and given that he is notoriously private it may well be his one and only appearance, so we hope you enjoy it.

Eric Bogle – And the Band played Waltzing Matilda
With the problems of fragile and conflict-affected states increasingly impossible to ignore, the international community has learned from bitter experience that our interventions need to be well calibrated to the political and tribal dynamics on the ground to have any chance of succeeding. On 22 September Lowy Institute Deputy Director Anthony Bubalo hosted Fred Smith for a captivating conversation focusing on reflections from Fred’s two years working as a diplomat and political officer on the frontline of Australia’s mission in Afghanistan, recently distilled into his fascinating memoir, The Dust of Uruzgan. In his 20-year career at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Fred Smith has developed a specialisation in fragile and conflict-affected states, and carved out an unusual niche. His work as a peace monitor, radio broadcaster and musician following the Bougainville crisis is the subject of the documentary, Bougainville Sky. Fred served for two years as a diplomat in southern Afghanistan, working alongside Australian soldiers in Uruzgan Province. Working on the Multinational Base in Tarin Kowt, as well as from a forward Operating Base in the Chora Valley, Fred’s second career as a musician came to the fore. His guitar served as a bridge, not only to the troops, but also to the people and tribal leaders of that war-torn region. His acclaimed album Dust of Uruzgan earned him comparisons to the great Australian songwriters Eric Bogle, John Schumann and Don Walker. The title track was recorded by Lee Kernaghan on his bestselling Spirit of the ANZACs album. Fred has also written a book – The Dust of Uruzgan – the first comprehensive on-the-ground account of Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan. He is currently a Senior Policy Officer in the Civil Military and Stabilisation Policy Section of DFAT’s Humanitarian Division.

I can't believe that I thought last week was a busy one for concerts. The next two weeks are among the busiest I've ever seen in this town, so we've got a lot to fit in, including Leeroy Stagger, Eric Bogle, BOP Ensemble, Dustin Bentall, Brock Zeman, Two Hours Traffic, The Hold Steady, and next week's in-studio guest Amelia Curran! Now that's a busy show full of great music!
