Phil. 2:6-11 is and deserves to be one of the most studied passages on Christ in the biblical writings. One grammatical question concerns a participle in v. 6, which is usually understood as concessive (“although”). But might Paul intend a causal sense (“because”)? The implications are profound. Dr. Michael Gorman is Raymond E. Brown Professor of Biblical Studies and Theology at St. Mary's Seminary & University. He has published numerous works, including Inhabiting the Cruciform God: Kenosis, Justification, and Theosis in Paul's Narrative Soteriology and (March, 2025) 1 Corinthians: A Theological, Pastoral, and Missional Commentary. Ep 180: Jesus and Capitalism

In this episode, I discuss the problem of unclear economic thinking in Biblical scholarship. Terms like ‘capitalism' and ‘socialism' are often left undefined by the scholars who employ them, and the vague cultural notion that ‘capitalism' is about evil and greed while ‘socialism' is about virtue and charity characterizes the use of economic language in scholarship on the Bible. I discuss how many excellent scholars nevertheless make Jesus out to be a modern socialist despite doing excellent historical work on ancient economic systems. I define capitalism as it is understood by the Austrian school as a theory of private capital accumulation based on absolute respect for property rights. I then explain how modern economic concepts are foreign to ancient thinkers. I read through Luke 12:13-34 and explain the historical questions which need to be asked to accurately interpret this passage and explain how modern interpreters gloss over Jesus's statements on wealth and charity with an uncritical appeal to socialism. I then explore this dynamic by reviewing the work of two New Testament scholars, Richard Horsley and Douglas Oakman, who do excellent historical analysis on ancient economic and political systems but impose modern socialist ideas onto the texts while coming to the incorrect political conclusions that all our modern problems are a result of capitalism on ‘capitalism', when the real problem are socialist policies that they support. They allow their biases to determine interpretive outcomes. I also reveal that I am writing a book about all of this which I hope will be published in 2026.   Media Referenced:LVM vs. N.T. What does Romans say about the restoration of Israel? Smyrna Revelation 2:8-11 Background • Smyrna was one of the most prosperous cities in Asia Minor in the 1st Century • 195 bc Smyrna built a temple to Roma Remember the big idea is faithful witness! • Smyrna is 1 of 2 of these churches that gets praised and not correction in Revelation. Jesus' description (v8) Poverty and Riches (v9a) • No health and wealth gospel is being preached to the church in Smyrna • Some have argued that ptocheia (poverty) is a very strong word for this concept meaning they had literally nothing Who is the true Jew? (v9b) • Michael Gorman sums this up in READING REVELATION RESPONSIBLY: o It is likely that some Jews have betrayed their own identity as God's people (from John's perspective) by colluding with those possessing economic power (perhaps officials in the trade guilds, the networks of tradespeople similar to modern unions, or in the temples that served also as banks) and/or Roman political officials in persecuting the Smyrnaean church. The economic impact and the potential for legal action have apparently not led any in the church to accommodate. The challenge is to remain fearless and faithful—to trust and obey. Do not fear/Tribulation for 10 days/ Be faithful unto death (v10) o Gregory Stevenson- A Slaughtered Lamb, Pg. 118-19:  In imitation of their Lord, the church in Smyrna is called upon to maintain their faithful witness, even if such witness leads to their deaths because the victory of Christ is achieved through a witness that does not faulter or fade even in the most extreme circumstances. Yet, He assures them, if they share in this part of Christ's pattern, they will also share in the remainder of that pattern- Christ's glorified resurrection (The crown of life)… the seven letters transform the concept of victory. If Christ sets the pattern, then our understanding of victory must conform to Christ's own victory. Christ's own victory achieved on a cross was not a victory over his Roman oppressors or Jewish enemies, but over the Power of Satan. Conquers (v11) Polycarp
