I had the pleasure of sitting down with Raun Kaufman to talk about his incredible journey of personal recovery from severe autism and his dedication to helping others on the spectrum. He is an international lecturer and graduate of Brown University with a Degree in Biomedical Ethics and author of Autism Breakthrough. As a child he was diagnosed with so-called “severe” non speaking autism and recommended lifelong institutionalization. Instead his parents worked with him to blossom, grow, and accomplish everything his parents were told he would not. We dove into the critical need to create a safe environment for autistic individuals, to truly understand their unique ways of experiencing the world, and to clear up some common misconceptions about things like attention span and mind blindness. Raun opened up about his own methods for reaching out and connecting with autistic individuals by finding common ground through shared interests, and he stressed how vital it is to approach autism with both an informed perspective and a sensitivity to past trauma.    I couldn't help but connect Raun's insights with my own experiences with my daughter Lilly, especially when it comes to the power of forming deep, authentic emotional bonds. Ron also discussed his book and the various resources he's created to offer support to those with autism.   Grab the Hyper Focus Journal While It's On Sale - Use the Code HYPER30 for 30% Off!   Ways to Work with Me:  Follow Me on Instagram Follow the Podcast on Instagram Get Podcast Merch  www.mindywender.com www.hyperfocusmentor.com Episode Outline:  Raun's professional and personal experience (00:00:58)  His childhood diagnosis and treatment (00:03:31)  Parental instincts with therapeutic approaches (00:17:06)  The Safe to Connect Autism Approach (00:34:58)  Neuro Crash and Dysregulation (00:35:40)  Understanding the ACT Protocol (00:39:36)  Social Attention Span and Mind Blindness (00:56:45) Referenced Resources:  www.autismcrisisturnaround.com www.raunkkaufman.com  Raun's Facebook Page Find Autism Breakthrough by Raun Kaufman on Amazon or Audible Lilly's Story Episode   If you enjoyed this episode, share with a friend and leave a rating & review of this show! Confidence in Convictions, Humility in Delivery Balancing confidence and humility is indeed a challenge, but it's a key aspect of embodying the paradoxical mindset seen in early Christianity. Seek Understanding Before Being Understood: Approach conversations with a genuine desire to understand others' perspectives. This shows humility and respect, even if you maintain confidence in your own beliefs. Open-mindedness Without Compromising Core Values: Maintain an open mind and a willingness to learn from others. This doesn't mean compromising your core values but being open to different perspectives can foster humility. Embrace Intellectual Humility: Acknowledge that your understanding may not be exhaustive, and there is always room for growth. Intellectual humility allows for a confident yet humble engagement with differing opinions. Choose Words Wisely: Use language that reflects confidence without being dismissive or arrogant. Avoid absolutist statements and express your opinions as beliefs open to discussion. Model Graceful Disagreement: Demonstrate how to disagree gracefully. Disagreements can be respectful and constructive rather than combative. This reflects both confidence in your beliefs and humility in your approach. Share Personal Growth Experiences: Communicate instances where you've grown or changed your perspective. This vulnerability demonstrates humility and a willingness to learn, even when confident in your beliefs. Build Bridges, Not Walls: Focus on building bridges of understanding rather than constructing walls of division. #8  - Lest We Forget. A spiritual experience on ANZAC Day   This is an episode that wasn't actually meant to be an episode.   Recently here in Australia, we celebrated ANZAC Day and for those in our global audience who don't know what that means, ANZAC stands for the Australian New Zealand Army Corps. And ANZAC Day is a commemoration day held on the anniversary of the landing of Australia, New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in Turkey on 25th of April 1915   ANZAC Day is a huge Remembrance Day, not just of Gallipoli & WWI,  it also honours any Australian presence in any war across the globe. All who server or lost their lives, are remembered at dawn service commemorations across Australia & New Zealand   This year, Liz went to the dawn service with her family… not knowing she was about to have a profound spiritual experience.   What you're about to hear is a very privileged peak into to two friends supporting each other through some of those crazy moments that we have on this Spiritual rollercoaster.   A conversation of remembrance, grief, processing and healing that took us from Gallipoli, to England to Normandy, to Belgium, Ireland and Cambodia. You don't need to be from Australia or New Zealand. The church and its charismatic founder, Mark Driscoll, had a promising start. But the perils of power, conflict, and Christian celebrity eroded and eventually shipwrecked both the preacher and his multimillion-dollar platform.https://www.churchcalledtov.org - Tragically, in recent years, Christians have gotten used to revelations of abuses of many kinds in our most respected churches. We need a better way. The sad truth is that churches of all shapes and sizes are susceptible to abuses of power, sexual abuse, and spiritual abuse. Abuses occur most frequently when Christians neglect to create a culture that resists abuse and promotes healing, safety, and spiritual growth. How do we keep these devastating events from repeating themselves? We need a map to get us from where we are today to where we ought to be as the body of Christ. That map is in a mysterious and beautiful little Hebrew word in Scripture that we translate “good,” the word tov. Thanks for a great year… and we'll see you back here in a couple of weeks with the first episode in 2022.Show Music:Intro/Outro - "Growth" by Armani Delos SantosTransition Music - produced by Jacob A. I've always taken that as a bit of an exaggeration… but what if its not? What If we've misunderstood what John was trying to say?John chapter 21 is all about restoration. The disciples limped their way through events in the garden of Gethsemane and then disbursed and deflected their connection with Jesus through the rest of that weekend. The core of the United States' identity is white supremacy. Its growth as a nation has always depended on genocide, enslavement, and colonization, beginning in indigenous American land, and now globally. To fight them, we need to understand how our oppressions differ, interact, and enable the others. White Supremacy is not a ladder we can climb to the top of. It is a 3-legged stool. Mike and Q discuss Inventing Reality: The Politics of New Media, by Michael Parenti. The book pulls no punches in explaining exactly how the people who own the news media creates what is (and isn't) news. What is news invariably serves elites, their investments, and right-wing corporate interests. What gets twisted or isn't shown at all is usually the information necessary for the people to collectivize and organize in our own interests. This is the story of how social and political justice is undermined in "The Free World." It also explains a lot of why and how Asians in diaspora are trained to hate their home countries. An award-winning journalist, Ms. Carey worked as senior health reporter for Tribune Media, writing for the Los Angeles Times and the Orlando Sentinel before taking on her role at AID in 2014. She is also past president of a medical marketing firm, author of four books, a nationally syndicated columnist, and frequent TV guest and speaker. Since joining AID, Ms. Carey has been featured in over 50 media outlets including Forbes, NBC, FOX, Bloomberg, Becker's, Modern Healthcare and Medical Economics. Combining her health-care and communications experience, Ms. Carey now serves as the voice of independent doctors who don't have the time, resources or clout to speak out against the formidable forces facing them, including pressure to sell out to hospitals, and excessive government regulations. A doctor's advocate, Ms. Carey has addressed lawmakers and physician leaders on Capitol Hill numerous times, and has spoken at many national conferences. She works closely with the Federal Trade Commission to enforce anti-trust laws, and regularly collaborates with like-minded groups to champion physician autonomy and keep the health-care relationship between Doctors and Patients. In honor of Mental Health Awareness month I felt the discussion about mental health needed to take place. I believe that mental health issues are among some of the most widespread illnesses of our time. With 1 in 5 adults suffering from some form of mental health issue (that’s almost 40 million Americans), not only are they widespread, but they are also generally quite a lot more challenging to identify and control than many might think. The World Health Organization (WHO) refers to mental health as ‘a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his own community.’ It has also been found that mental health issues in America increased most noticeably between the 1930s and 1990s, with some fascinating studies outlining that young people, in particular, have indicated a significant decrease in levels of happiness since this era. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that mixed-race Americans are one of the fastest growing racial category in the United States (and a particularly young demographic as well). A popular idea argues that the “beigeing” of America will naturally lead to decreased racism, but is it more complicated than that? Special guest Sharon H. Chang (author, photographer, and activist) and returning guest C.S. Taniguchi share their experiences with Oxford Kondō on what it’s like to grow up mixed-race Asian and what their thoughts are on the future of mixed-race America. The idea of "Game" when it comes to dating, romance and plain ol'hooking up is a loaded term, especially in the modern climate of online dating apps and the more recent #MeToo movement. The term “internalized racism” gets thrown around a lot in Asian American online discussions, but what does it really mean? While the phenomenon of internalized racism is undoubtedly real and has been historically apparent across all racial (usually non-white) groups, would online discussions be more productive if we were more articulate and specific in what we are saying when we use this term? Oxford and Jess welcome two first-time guests, Diana (a stand-up comedian) and Ken (an engineer), in talking through this topic. Today we sit down with Marni Jameson Carey, MA, the Executive Director, Association of Independent Doctors (www.AID-US.org) Marni Jameson Carey is the executive director of the Association of Independent Doctors (AID), a national nonprofit designed to support America's independent doctors, stop the trend of health-care consolidation and, thus, reduce health-care costs. Ms. Carey received her bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Kansas, and her master's degree in writing from Vermon College. From Natalie Tran's "White Male Asian Female" documentary to NYT's article "The Alt-Right's Asian Fetish" to the backlash against Chloe Bennet (born Chloe Wang) for dating Logan Paul, the topic of WMAF has been unavoidable as of late. It's often said that the issues of internalized racism involved in this topic are best addressed by and for Asian women. But what happens when Asian women run into brick walls when trying to talk to other Asian women about this, resulting in strained friendships or ostracization from activist circles? To shed more light on this are Jess, Christina, and special guest Sammi Lee, a student and Asian/LGBTQ activist in NYC (with Oxford in a producer role). It seems that every few months, a new incident occurs where the fiery debate over cultural appropriation is sparked again. What exactly is at the heart of this very emotional issue? Is it a fear of being replaced? Is it a fear of losing ownership of culture? Is it resentment at having feelings ignored? Is there a profit motive involved? Is there a gendered response, especially when beauty is involved? Eliza, Oxford, and Christina examine these questions in recent flare-ups about qipaos, music, food, and more. GUEST: Luke Hartsock -- Founder and CEO of Decisive Data   http://www.decisivedata.net/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/lukehartsock/   The Guiding Principles of Decisive Data: Create Customer Value: I do work that clearly satisfies my customer. The primary beneficiary of my effort is my customer. Be Original: I have a unique combination of skills, character, and history that no one else does. Serve Others: I put the needs of others first. Service is an attitude and way of being. Have Grit: I see challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. I am not defeated by setbacks and choose to endure and overcome. Pursue Excellence: I continuously improve my knowledge, tools, and expertise. The quality of my work is a representation of who I am. Have Fun: I foster an environment of laughter, joy, and friendship.   Points of Wisdom from our Conversation:   Culture starts with who we let into our company.   Everything important gets codified. Even the oral tradition that is organically created, gets codified and written down, in order to ensure that as the company grows, it stays true to its core.   Authority is effective when it can influence without having to control. And it’s effective when it can serve without demanding service in return.   Transitions are hard. Change is hard. The transitions that people go through before and after a project are often overlooked to the detriment of the individual and the organization.   Be aware of and beware the switching costs of moving from one area of focus to another, even briefly. Make sure to protect (and that your people are protecting) expanses of productivity time.   We’ve got to move past the distractibility to really lead well.   Behind distraction and lack of flow, avoidance in a real issue that hampers effective leadership. Note what you need to do -- and face it.   Results are accomplished through behaviors. Request, measure, drive behaviors.   Take what you want to build, and magnify that vision by 10X -- then you’ve got a vision that will really drive results. Method without vision has no capacity to guide or inspire.   At Decisive Data, there’s a motto: Every decision informed by data.   You can’t gather data if you’re not paying attention. Leadership Portraits is a conversation designed to inspire the leader in you. This portrait features Cindy Rodgers. Cindy is currently the director of womens ministries at Calvary Chapel Corvallis where she also oversees the day-to-day function of the church office and building. Cindy lives in Corvallis, Oregon and is the mother of three grown children and has five grandchildren. Tragically, Cindy's husband Russ lost his life in a valiant battle with cancer after 25 years of marriage. Cindy has been through the best of times and some of the absolute lowest. Through it all she has blossomed into a great leader and she is still getting stronger. This was an inspiring conversation for me and I hope it will be for you too. Thank you so much for listening and learning! Quotes: "Build your team." "God hasn't created us to be everything to everybody." "Communication communication communication; so we're not second-guessing each other, so we know what's going on in both of our worlds, what the expectations are, that really helps." "Here it is Lord. If he wants me to continue doing it, he's going to give it back to me and it's going to be with walking in surrender." "Don't let fear rob you of what God wants to do through you." "When our strength and our gifting and our everything is from the Lord, from the filling of the Holy Spirit, then we can't help but be effective for the Kingdom; it's not that we've tried to but it's just him in us."
