Today's poem explains why some Australians wear beards.Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson, CBE (17 February 1864 – 5 February 1941) was an Australian bush poet, journalist and author, widely considered one of the greatest writers of Australia's colonial period.Born in rural New South Wales, Paterson worked as a lawyer before transitioning into literature, where he quickly gained recognition for capturing the life of the Australian bush. A representative of the Bulletin School of Australian literature, Paterson wrote many of his best known poems for the nationalist journal The Bulletin, including "Clancy of the Overflow" (1889) and "The Man from Snowy River" (1890). His 1895 ballad "Waltzing Matilda" is regarded widely as Australia's unofficial national anthem and, according to the National Film and Sound Archive, has been recorded more than any other Australian song.-bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode. With Anzac Day just around the corner, Born to Watch honours a defining moment in Australian cinema with our Gallipoli (1981) Movie Review. Directed by Peter Weir and starring a young, raw Mel Gibson alongside Mark Lee, this film is more than a war story, it's a devastating portrait of friendship, sacrifice, and the tragic cost of blind patriotism. In this episode, Whitey and G-Man revisit the classic through a lens shaped by age, memory, and national identity. From the iconic opening scenes of sprinting through the outback to the haunting stillness of the battlefield at the Neck, Gallipoli strips away the glory of war and lays bare its cruel realities. The boys waste no time diving into the emotional core of the film, mateship. Whitey and G-Man see themselves in Frank and Archie, and they hilariously debate who's who. Is Whitey the cynical Frank, or is G-Man secretly more Archie than he'll admit? But it's not just about comparisons and callbacks to high school Anzac ceremonies. This is Born to Watch at its most reflective and reverent. The guys dig into the cultural significance of Gallipoli, how the film shaped their understanding of the Anzac legacy, and why it's essential viewing for every Australian. It's also a rare episode where the crew admits that this one is hard to joke about. Except, of course, when it comes to figuring out which of their mates is most like Snowy. They talk about how Gallipoli taught them what Anzac Day should mean. Not just a day off to play two-up and hit the pub, but a moment to remember real sacrifice. The 1981 film still hits hard, they argue, because it doesn't sugarcoat the futility of war. And when that final freeze frame lands, it guts you, every time. There's admiration for director Peter Weir, whose resume includes Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, and Master and Commander. But here, he's in peak form. Gallipoli's scale is intimate but never small; its visuals are sweeping, yet grounded in the personal. And the music? That synth track when Archie sprints across the desert? Still gives the boys goosebumps. The episode gets personal, too. Both hosts recall trying (and failing) to get their teenage kids to watch the film. They revisit childhood memories of Anzac Day school assemblies, the eerie power of “Only 19” and “Waltzing Matilda,” and the VHS that left a permanent mark. G-Man shares stories from his own pilgrimage to Gallipoli, visiting Lone Pine and The Nek and seeing firsthand the terrain that made the battle a bloodbath. As always, there's room for laughs, the mystery of Mark Lee's post-Gallipoli career, and whether it's safe to train for battle with live rounds (spoiler: probably not). But the tone stays grounded, respectful, and proud. They wrap things up with “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” highlighting Gallipoli's haunting silence, its unwavering focus on mateship, and its place in Australian cinematic history. It's not just a war film; it's a rite of passage.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Does Gallipoli still define the Anzac spirit? Is this Mel Gibson's best early performance?Have you visited the battlefield yourself?Drop us a voicemail at BornToWatch.com.au and be part of the show!#Gallipoli1981 #BornToWatch #GallipoliMovieReview #AnzacDay #PeterWeir #MelGibson #AustralianCinema #WarMovies #MoviePodcast #LestWeForget

This week on The KOKO Show we unshackle ourselves from the world of high-end rugby guests to get down and dirty with the majestic temptress that is International Rugby. Prof and the boys peel back the layers on all of the big matches from the weekend, with special attention placed on the Wallabies' big win over the luckless Welsh. The crew give their in depth opinions and hard hitting analysis of Australia's new era of rugby, as the men in gold successfully started the ‘Schmidting It In' process with a gritty win in game one of their July Series.Plus, we unpack all of the big DAWG duels that certainly lived up to their hype, with South Africa downing a gallant Ireland, New Zealand edging out a persistent England and France beating the Argies with the blunt end of a baguette. With week one of global games coming to a close it was a dominant display by the teams from the Southern semicircle of the world, which led the lads to renaming this week's juicy dose of ‘Northern Hemisphere Losers' in order to be more accurate. Also in the show, we dish up a classic case of ‘What's Drewing', Prof is the target of his first ‘Social Snitch' and finally Adam ‘Pieman' Ashley-Cooper goes for a three peat in the Four'N Twenty KOKO Quiz.Last, but certainly not least, thanks to our headline sponsor Polo Ralph Lauren the boys are literally wearing too many threads to count and boy do they look sexy in this week's installment of ‘Match Fit'. B. “Banjo” Paterson Narrated by Denis Daly First published in the Bulletin in the nineties, Paterson's verse has enjoyed enduring success throughout Australian literary history. Paterson had an intimate knowledge of life in the outback: he knew bushmen and he knew horses. His boundary riders and shearers, his buckjumpers and station-hands, are real characters — the first realistic portraits of Australians in the bush at work and play to appear in verse. Many of the characters he created have so imprinted themselves on the public imagination that they have become part of Australian folklore. One of his most memorable characters is Saltbush Bill, a tough and shrewd drover, who, in his retirement, is appointed a Justice of the Peace (magistrate.) This collection of 43 poems contains Waltzing Matilda, which has become something of an unofficial national anthem.

#8  - Lest We Forget. A spiritual experience on ANZAC Day   This is an episode that wasn't actually meant to be an episode.   Recently here in Australia, we celebrated ANZAC Day and for those in our global audience who don't know what that means, ANZAC stands for the Australian New Zealand Army Corps. And ANZAC Day is a commemoration day held on the anniversary of the landing of Australia, New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in Turkey on 25th of April 1915   ANZAC Day is a huge Remembrance Day, not just of Gallipoli & WWI,  it also honours any Australian presence in any war across the globe. All who server or lost their lives, are remembered at dawn service commemorations across Australia & New Zealand   This year, Liz went to the dawn service with her family… not knowing she was about to have a profound spiritual experience.   What you're about to hear is a very privileged peak into to two friends supporting each other through some of those crazy moments that we have on this Spiritual rollercoaster.   A conversation of remembrance, grief, processing and healing that took us from Gallipoli, to England to Normandy, to Belgium, Ireland and Cambodia. You don't need to be from Australia or New Zealand. The insights and messages are UNIVERSAL   I am so deeply grateful to Liz for her trust in me and in you our listeners.   And so I invite you to listen with an open heart and hold space for Liz as she processes through her profound spiritual experience on ANZAC Day.   #lestweforget #dawnservice #ANZACDay #warmemorial #RememberenceDay #commemoration #EasterRememberence #EasterLily #Gallipoli #ANZACcove #WWI #WWII #militaryservice #veteran #warveteran #Atatürk #Turkey #Cambodia #departedsouls #spiritualexperience #healing #transmutation #healtheland #Wewillrememberthem   ======== REFERENCED RESOURCES:  ▶︎ A moving tribute to the ANZAC's killed at Gallipoli attributed to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first President of the Republic of Turkey. Katherine Linn Caire is the author of ACCIDENTAL SISTERS: The Story of My 52-Year Wait to Meet My Biological Sibling. In the book she shares her adoption story that leads to many Serendipitous events. She is in Atlanta this weekend for a book event hosted by Read It Again Bookstore in Suwanee on March 11th from noon-2pm. Suwanee Book Store: https://www.read-it-again.com/... Web: https://www.klcairebooks.com/ Her memoir, Accidental Sisters, is a heartwarming story of adoption, unconditional love, and the serendipitous turn of events that led her to a remarkable discovery. What did she discover? Why is her story different from others? What will readers learn? Unlike other books about adoption, Caire brings an unusual and unique twist to the unexpected series of events that led to her discovery––and it did not involve DNA testing. What started her on her journey? She adored her adoptive family and never considered searching for her birth parents. However, at age fifty-two, and the mother of three grown children a sudden pull to learn more about her medical history sends her on an unexpected journey. She isn't interested in learning her birth parents' identities, just the details of their health. But what begins as a simple investigation takes a startling swerve when the social worker who sends the records fails to redact a crucial bit of information. Suddenly, Caire has more information than she bargained for. And to her surprise, she finds herself combing through vital records, researching every lead she can get her hands on. Caire swam competitively for the SMU Lady Mustangs swim team, and after receiving her BBA in Business (Finance), with Minors in Art History and Economics went on to a successful career in banking in Dallas, Texas. 30 years later, and the mother of now three grown daughters, she resides with her husband in Franklin, TN. About The Author: Katherine Linn Caire was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. She attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she swam for the Mustangs and received her BBA (Finance), with Minors in Art History and Economics. Although her career has spanned the gamut from commercial banking lender to advertising account executive, from calligrapher/artist to tennis official, she has found her true delight in putting pen to paper. Although she has illustrated a children's book, (Rocklin Goes to Work, M.D. Brown, 2016) Accidental Sisters is her debut work as an author. Kathe is currently working on her first novel. She lived in Dallas for nearly three decades, where all three of her and her husband's daughters were born and raised. The family moved to the beautiful city of Nashville, Tennessee in 2004 where she lives with her husband, Don, and their precious pup rescues, Waltzing Matilda and Marathon Molly. Jorgen Jorgensen, born in Copenhagen, Denmark to a watchmaker, lived the kind of life most seen in picaresque novels like Voltaire's Candide or Thackeray's Barry Lyndon - but another way to sum him up would be he lived the life of that guy in Sinatra's That's Life - He was a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a King. There is another P word that, sadly, summed the adventurer's life up - one that cast a shadow over much of his later life.  Sources this week include:  The Collected Works of Marcus Clarke - by Marcus Clarke.  The Convict King - by Jorgen Jorgensen.  And Australia's Most Unbelievable True Stories - by Jim Haynes.  The blog post of the episode is here. Remembrance Day is important to Canadians, but it might be revealing to find out how well they understand why the memory of past wars is so important. Contributor Shafer Parker suggests that Canada's involvement in two world wars mattered because our soldiers fought for an eternal principle, the only kind of freedom that makes human beings truly free.

Scott and Sean are joined by Andrew in third chair. We discuss The Pogues' 1985 cover of And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda. The song while fictional, details the horrific slaughter wreaked upon ANZAC soldiers during the WWI Gallipoli Campaign in 1915. The song begs the question of a soldier's sacrifice and what was it all for? Originally written during the Vietnam War but set during The Great War, Eric Bogle's 1971 ballad treating the ultimate sacrifices paid by Australia's young men, was movingly covered by The Pogues (and many others), is anti-war but not anti-soldier. Heartbreaking in its realism and portrayal of lost and wasted youth, this is definitely a piece that will stick with you for a long time. Give it a listen! Those who run Australian sports have concluded that the coaching of children has become too structured. Now they're doing something about it. The CEO of Water Polo Australia, Richard McInnes, explains what it is and how they're going about it. Interestingly, it involves many of the same approaches to coaching children as are being advocated in Canada. He also reveals their novel way to entice coaches to become better educated and trained. Here is the link to the cricket video he referenced in the podcast: vimeo.com/184622185.  It employs the same ideas USA Hockey used in 2014 when they placed adults on a frozen river to point out what kids see on a large rink.
