Not a grand finale, but a finale nonetheless. This week, we conclude our Eurospy season by taking a look at the final movie of the Diabolik reboot trilogy, Diabolik: Who Are You? After spending one movie on Eva and one on Ginko, the writers have finally sighed and written some Diabolik backstop. Turns out he was raised on SPECTRE Island. In a rare turn of events, we encounter an actually good movie—not just a good Eurospy movie, but just a flat-out banger of a movie—very late in the season and after we've become expert witnesses on just how bad and formulaic pretty much every Eurospy movie is. That's right, we're reviewing the 1966 film THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM featuring some cast you might have heard of, such as: Alec Guiness, Max von Sydow, George Segal, with a screenplay by... Harold Pinter? And it's good. It's great! What the hell is going on? ----- FREE PALESTINE Hey, Devon here. This week: We're fucking back to fucking eurospy you mother fuckers. Our Duty is ironclad, our Will steadfast, our Vision clear... And we're using this to derive a perfect forumla for a Eurospy movie. The names change but the roles remain the same every time. 009? M? Bond? I know what you're thinking - WTF Happened to The Avengers? Nothing, it was one of the biggest hits ever. Not so fast - we're not talking about the Marvel superhero team-up that shot the MCU into the stratosphere. Instead, we're talking about 1998's misbegotten remake of the classic British spy series, The Avengers. On paper, this should have been a great movie. The Avengers was a classic British TV series starring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg as super spy agents John Steed and Emma Peel. Their “will they or won't they” chemistry influenced everything from Cheers to Moonlighting, and the show still runs daily in the UK. Given that the show was always considered the best Eurospy franchise outside of James Bond, it should have turned into a massive franchise for Warner Bros. The cast was next-level, with Uma Thurman playing Emma Peel, Ralph Fiennes as John Steed, and James Bond himself, Sean Connery, as the main villain, Sir August de Wynter. So what went wrong? Just about everything, as we'll dig into in this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie. For one thing, the finished version of the film clocked in at 89 minutes, about a half hour shorter than intended. Director Jeremiah Chechik found himself saddled with a finished film that didn't make a lick of sense. Given the issues with the cut, instead of being a summer blockbuster, it was dumped to the same late-summer dumping ground we find ourselves in right now (there's a reason nothing really opens until after Labor Day). So dig in and check out this tale of the spy franchise that wasn't. For more MOVIE NEWS, visit: http://www.joblo.com
It's time for another Eurospy spoof. This movie, based on the 'Modesty Blaise' comics by Peter O'Donnell, was written and directed by Joseph Losey to be 'A pop-art inspired spoof, with over-the-top set design, """Avante-garde editing""", and deliberate continuity problems'. It was nominated for a Palme d'Or at Cannes. He made a bad movie on purpose, as a joke. Let me set the scene: It's 1963, the movie 'From Russia With Love' has just released and pre-production on 'Goldfinger' is already taking place. The People are clamoring for international nonces of mystery, and the great film-mills of Europe are only too happy to hard shift from the declining 'sword and sandals' genre into something that will forever be known... as Eurospy. It's episode one of season 3, the much anticipated 'Season of Solidarity', where we take a look at movies not currently struck by the WGA or SAG-AFTRA and get to get back to our roots of talking about a bad spy movie from the 60s. The legendary Harry Alan Towers: independent film producer, part-time pimp and full-time opportunist. Britain's answer to Roger Corman, Towers started off the 60s believing that your brain is the most powerful sexual organ. By the end of the Sixties, he accepted – like everybody else in the biz did – that, nope, your junk is. Turned on by the literary bone fides he'd get by adapting great books into great movies, Towers instead turned his attention instead to noted hate-crime enthusiast Sax Rohmer. His pet project focused on the most evil man who never lived: Dr. Fu Manchu. In this episode, Bart and Jenna sidestep Bootleg Bond by focusing on Fu Manchu films, a revival franchise that never would have existed if not for ‘60s Bond Mania. Jenna moans and bitches about how much she can't stand these admittedly dated and racist films even if she kinda secretly enjoys the pop-mod styled misandrist villains. And to his utter delight, Bart finally gets his vengeance for all of the Eurospy trash Jenna forced him to watch. You have not heard the last of…!The following films are discussed:• The Face of Fu Manchu (1965) Directed by Don Sharp Starring Christopher Lee, Nigel Green, Tsai Chin• The Brides of Fu Manchu (1966) Directed by Don Sharp Starring Christopher Lee, Douglas Wilmer, Tsai Chin• The Million Eyes of Sumuru (1967) Directed by Lindsay Shonteff Starring Shirley Eaton, Frankie Avalon, George Nader• The Vengeance of Fu Manchu (1967) Directed by Jeremy Summers Starring Christopher Lee, Douglas Wilmer, Tsai Chin• The Blood of Fu Manchu (1968) Directed by Jesús Franco Starring Christopher Lee, Richard Greene, Tsai Chin• The Girl from Rio (1969) Directed by Jesús Franco Starring Shirley Eaton, Richard Stapley, George Sanders• The Castle of Fu Manchu (1969) Directed by Jesús Franco Starring Christopher Lee, Richard Greene, Tsai Chin
We're back in the world of Bootleg Bond, navigating the vast number of rip-offs and spoofs that tried to cash in on the 007 craze. In this episode, Cinema60 goes to Italy to scout out Agent 077 – the ever forgettable Eurospy with the ever changing name and face. Marvel as he shoots men, slaps women, skis mountains, flies helicopters, saves the world from nuclear meltdown and remains wholly unengaging throughout. These six utterly disposable entertainments aren't really the point here, though. The real meat of episode is Bart & Jenna's philosophical inquiry into the true nature of knockoff cinema and what these films mean to their largely accidental audience. Moreover, they scrutinize the Italian film industry of the ‘60s that thrived on producing hundreds upon hundreds of cheap genre pictures and lousy imitations of hit films for international distribution, and ask the same men responsible for giving us the cinematic masterpieces of Fellini and Antonioni the crucial question: Cosa diavolo…?The following films are discussed:• Mission Bloody Mary (1965) Agente 077 missione Bloody Mary Directed by Sergio Grieco Starring Ken Clark, Helga Liné, Mitsouko• From the Orient with Fury (1965) Agente 077 dall'oriente con furore Directed by Sergio Grieco Starring Ken Clark, Margaret Lee, Fabienne Dali• 077 - Special Mission Lady Chaplin (1966) Missione speciale Lady Chaplin Directed by Alberto De Martino & Sergio Grieco Starring Ken Clark, Daniela Bianchi, Helga Liné• Secret Agent Fireball (1965) Le spie uccidono a Beirut Directed by Luciano Martino Starring Richard Harrison, Dominique Boschero, Wandisa Guida• Killers Are Challenged (1966) A 077, sfida ai killers Directed by Antonio Margheriti Starring Richard Harrison, Mitsouko, Wandisa Guida• Fury in Marrakesh (1966) 077 - Furia a Marrakech Directed by Mino Loy & Luciano Martino Starring Stephen Forsyth, Dominique Boschero, Mitsouko

As part of a weekend profiling Radio 3's New Generation Thinkers, Matthew Sweet is joined by film historian Iain Smith, a past member of scheme, for a look at one of his pet interests - how popular English speaking film titles and their music often appear adapted and remade in other countries of the world. Virtually every major franchise has its equivalent local version in some part of the world. It could be a Turkish or Filipino interpretation of James Bond or an Indian take on Harry Potter. Sometimes the music bares a strong resemblance to the original as well. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the many different takes on the James Bond franchise and Matthew and Iain give particular attention to the "Eurospy" phenomenon of the 60s and 70s. This sharing of ideas also works the other way round, and Matthew and Iain look at how Hollywood has taken inspiration from French cinema, Bollywood and Japan. The programme includes music from 'True Lies', 'Sommersby', 'UpperSeven - The Spy with Ten Faces', 'OK Connery', 'Kung Fu Hustle', 'Dastak', 'Pearl Harbor', and 'Battle beyond the Stars'. The Classic Scores of the week are Fumio Hayasaka's 'The Seven Samurai' and Elmer Bernstein's 'The Magnificent seven'.

Groomed as a potential leading man and heartthrob for the Hollywood studio system of the 1950s, George Nader went from a debut in an acknowledged camp classic (Robot Monster) through roles alongside the likes of Tony Curtis, Maureen O’Hara, Esther Williams, Hedy Lamarr and John Saxon, eventually winding up in the career-defining role of FBI G-man Jerry Cotton in an unforgettable series of two fisted German action films that drew equally from the Bondian excess of the Eurospy craze and the wild and wooly vibe of the Edgar Wallace krimi. With their gritty vibe, surprising stunt sequences and dark undertones, these 8 films even seemed to draw from the contemporaneous NYC sexploiter, while bearing enough lineage with the Wallace (and arguably, Mabuse) films (whose recurrent director Harald Reinl helmed three entries, and whose go-to composer Peter Thomas composed the films’ jaunty theme and provided most of their scoring) to elevate the second tier Hollywood expat to the second most popular film star in Germany! Join us as we return from a long hiatus to zcover these highly entertaining films, as we discuss the “first gay action hero”, George Nader and the Jerry Cotton series! We’d previously addressed the cinema of Ian Fleming’s favorite son, a gritty MI6 man turned urbane jet setter and lounge lizard cum male fantasy figure (come on, who out there didn’t want to be Bond…or bag the plethora of global lovelies he made his way through in one epic adventure after another?) in our second season. But with a recent upgrade to Blu Ray, the household of yours truly has spent the last few months wending our way through Britain’s favorite son once more, from the quirkily formative fantasia of Dr. No through the oddly flawed and gritty Daniel Craig era (with a few of the later entries, for the very first time in fact!). In the wake of our delve into the wide world of Eurospy (both in film and television) and more recent efforts like the Henry Cavill Man From UNCLE and Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible series, how do these venerable classics hold up? Well, to be honest…hold on to your hats, because everything we’d said previously? Has changed, often quite radically. It’s time to stir the cloudy waters of that improperly shaken vodka martini and see where all the chips fall… Week 42: Revisiting Bond
Finally revealed! Here's why TCTT has been on hiatus since X-mas. The experiment that broke Matt's brain: watching a 3 Supermen movie a day...
In the wake of the surprising worldwide success of the James Bond films, moviemakers around the globe raced to put forth their own homegrown versions of M16's favorite son. Occasionally utilizing pre-existing detective/spy stories (Belgium's Francis Coplan, Germany's Rolf Torring) but more often creating their own from scratch, directors from such nations as Italy, Spain, Germany and France in particular would release a flurry of pictures revolving around such recurring characters as OSS 117, Kommissar X, Agent X 1-7, Jerry Cotton and even Lemmy Caution. We've already addressed many British TV spy series, Germany's Edgar Wallace (and Dr. Mabuse) krimis and James Bond himself...join us this week as we take on the rest of the Eurospy canon, only here on Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine! Week 41 Spies, Thighs and Private Eyes: Eurospy cinema
This week, we'll be talking Bond and other spies! In the earliest days of the Cold War, unlikely monikered producer Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli and his partner Harry Saltzman tapped into some very variant elements of the late 50's/early 60's zeitgeist and created the defining example of a martini-sipping, jet setting lounge lizard fantasy of an international spy. Simultaneously able to work contemporary political tropes of anti-Communism and the hip, swinging macho dream of every potbellied suburban overlord, their version of Ian Fleming's 007 overtook the original and spawned a literal army of filmic and televised knockoffs, from the successful (Jerry Cotton and the Eurospy craze, John Steed, Jason King, Adam Adamant, Alexander Mundy, Simon Templar, James West and Artemus Gordon, the I.M.F.) to the strangely popular and comic oriented but failed (Man From Uncle, Get Smart, I Spy). Join us as we separate the wheat from the chaff, only here on Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine! Week 13 Shaken...not stirred Your hosts "Doc" Savage and Louis Paul www.facebook.com/WeirdScenes1
