In this episode, Tate chats with Marcus Nuccio and Evan Weiss, the driving forces behind the band, Pet Symmetry, about their latest album Big Symmetry, released on May 2. Since August 2023, the record label, Storm Chaser, has been releasing one album every month, but Big Symmetry stands out as the label's most significant release yet. Marcus and Evan discuss the power of self-releasing music, as owning their own label allows them to make all the decisions and maintain complete control over their music. They also reflect on the incredible freedom this gives them, from writing and recording to collaborating with friends in the industry, such as Mike from Asian Man Records, who contributed to this release. The duo opens up about the unique writing process for Big Symmetry, which took place in a cabin in Southern Illinois. Over the course of just seven days, the band wrote 17 songs and immediately tracked the drums, marking a departure from their usual, more spread-out approach to songwriting. Lyrically, the band challenged themselves to write 12 love songs, a task that proved difficult for some members, but ultimately resulted in a more refined, confident sound. Marcus and Evan also discuss the evolution of their music, explaining how the process and the music itself reflect their growth as musicians since they first started playing together in 2012. With Pet Symmetry marking their fourth LP, the band finds themselves at a point where they can confidently call themselves veterans in the indie music scene. Their newfound confidence, along with their years of experience, has led to a tight, like-minded group of musicians who know exactly what they want out of their music careers. The episode offers an inside look at the band's journey, their creative process, and how their decisions along the way has allowed them to achieve everything they ever wanted in music. Whether you're a fan of the band or new to their music, this conversation provides valuable insights into the world of independent music and the freedom that comes with owning your art.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two old friends who've contributed more than their fair share to the emo world and beyond and lived to tell the tale: Evan Weiss and Chris Carrabba. Carrabba is of course the main creative force behind Dashboard Confessional, whose early albums—specifically The Swiss Army Romance and The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most—basically invented the genre's confessional acoustic-based era. He could've made those records a dozen times over the past 20 years, but instead Carrabba filled out Dashboard's sound over the years, stretching out where the muse took him. Now an elder statesman, Carrabba returned to that simpler sound but brought years of wisdom with him for 2022's All the Truth That I Can Tell, which he talks about in this great chat. Dashboard will head out on a long summer tour with Goo Goo Dolls starting July 13, but not before playing a show with Weiss's band in Vegas the day before. Weiss's band would be Pet Symmetry, a trio he's been part of for the past decade or so, and which just released an excellent new album: Big Symmetry is a big, loveable, tuneful set of songs that all start with the word “big.” It's a joyful blast of pop-punk that feels like a deliberate antidote to tough times. It may also be a bit of a reaction to what fans would consider Weiss's main band, Into It. Over It., which flies that emo flag a bit higher. But whatever, those tags are pretty silly when we ought to be talking about songs. Speaking of, check out the song “Big Wish” from the album Big Symmetry right here. In this wide-ranging chat, Carrabba and Weiss talk about the holiness of punk community, the accidental origins of Dashboard Confessional plus that band's long hiatus and rebirth, and how the financial collapse of 2008 had opposite effects on their careers. It's true! Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Chris Carrabba and Evan Weiss for chatting. The Progress were an indie rock band from Cherry Hill, NJ and existed from 2001 to 2008. They were four grade school friends who learned how to play music (and their instruments) together. In their lifespan, they wrote two EP's and a LP. They spent the majority of their time as a band winning the hearts of girls in their 20's and getting booked on metal shows that didn't make any sense playing. Live and learn. Their singer Evan went on to start his own project Into It. Over It. while living in Chicago, IL. He also plays in Their / They're / There and Pet Symmetry. There's a funny story on how this interview happened but you'll have to listen to hear what that was. So I got Evan on the Skype and this is what we chat about: His Patreon for his record label Finding The NJPP archive Releasing Merit on vinyl Lobster Records Negative Progression Records Starting Into It. There's something about the band name Into It. Over It. that seems perfect for the digital age, when we rush to crown the Next Big Thing one week and abandon it for the new Next Big Thing a week later. But Chicago singer and songwriter Evan Thomas Weiss has managed to keep an even keel through nearly a decade and several full-length albums, keeping Into It. Over It. as both a touring band and as an occasional solo project. The band's 2016 album was called Standards (no, he doesn't sing Gershwin or Cole Porter), and Evan Weiss joined us to perform a live solo set.
We're back after a weeklong hiatus where we were on vacation at a secret government testing lab in an undisclosed location called Roswell, New Mexico. Episode 233 - Hooray! It’s my good friend Evan Weiss from Into It. Over It. (and a million other bands) on the pod today. We hopped on the phone one afternoon and talked about technology, sports, growing older and DIY culture. It’s wide ranging, positive and thoughtful which is something that I know we all need at this point. Also, you can hear about my personal struggles going on in my life currently. Please keep me and my family in your thoughts/prayers moving forward as we absolutely need it. On this episode we welcome Evan Weiss and Josh Sparks from Into It. Over it. Recently Evan and Josh were in NYC and we had some time to catch up before their show. We touched on recording in Vermont, the independent scene, the last time we all head walked and what’s next for the band. It was fantastic to spend time with Evan and Josh. Be sure to check out all of his music and without fail they’re out on the road in a town near you.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
A massive record collector with an inspirational work ethic that rivals the busiest musicians in the business, Evan Weiss has released more material just under the Into It. Over It. moniker than most bands do in a lifetime. Throw in his side-projects Pet Symmetry and Their / They're / There, his production work for acts like Xerxes, Annabel or You Blew It, and releasing friends' albums on his own Storm Chasers Ltd. label, and you'd wonder how he has time for even *listening* to music, let alone touring and recording. On this episode, Evan talks about going completely analog with renowned producer John Vanderslice for his new album "Standards" (out March 11th on Triple Crown), the 12 different inserts to the "Standards" vinyl pressing, his early obsessions with Peter Gabriel and Depeche Mode, checking what his own catalog goes for on vinyl auction sites, what releases of his he'll never repress, and so much more! Our oldest pal, Michael Shuman, stops by Harsh Toke HQ in between touring the new Mini Mansions record, THE GREAT PRETENDERS (available March 23rd) to discuss growing up playing in bands with Zach Dawes and our very own Evan Weiss, selling pot to finance his first record, meeting Josh Homme and joining Queens of The Stoneage.
In this episode Mr. Evan Weiss was kind enough to give us some time before leaving on tour Wednesday to discuss his musical ventures, producing, and vinyl collecting!
Evan Weiss from Into It. Over It. took time out from his shows in the NYC area recently to sit down with me to chat about the old days. We literally were on a bed chatting with the rain falling in Brooklyn. Can't script a better time for an emo podcast. Thanks for listening!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
