Raizel and Malya talk "The Ex Talk" by Rachel Lynn Solomon
Send us a Text Message.Ever wondered why at family gatherings, some folks get to dig into the crab and shrimp while others get the side-eye for reaching for the "grown-up" plates? Pull up a chair as we share the heartwarming and sometimes hilarious nuances of food traditions and the unspoken rules at the dinner table. From the way our parents broke the mold by letting us sneak a taste of 'big people food' to the fierce debates over whether kids or adults should attack the buffet line first, we're serving up a smorgasbord of cultural practices and childhood memories. But our palates aren't the only things we're indulging in. Tune in for a side of hip-hop culture as rich as grandma's gravy. The conversation gets spicy as we dissect rap beefs, with a dash of disappointment over J. Cole's unexpected onstage apology and the City Girls' very public squabble. Feel the impact of these lyrical showdowns and witness how they shape legacies in the music industry. It's a meal of words and wit you don't want to miss, flavored with our own connections to the beats and bars that soundtrack our lives. And because life's a balancing act, we're also peeling back the curtain on the real grind behind creative passions and work commitments. From the sizzling debate between Ben Shapiro and Candace Owens to the juicy details of Terrence Howard's wig disaster, we're not shying away from the tough choices and sacrifices made in the pursuit of dreams. It's an episode that's as layered as your favorite lasagna, rich with the essence of what it means to juggle the personal with the public, the artistic with the practical. So, sit back, relax, and let's feast on this full-course discussion that's sure to satisfy your appetite for thought-provoking chatter.

We discussed her background in film school, her journey into writing books, and her recent rescue dog. We explored the world of romance and thriller writing, touching on the rising popularity of adventure rom-coms and the intricacies of writing romance and thriller subplots. We also delved into Carlyn's experiences in the film industry and her inspiration for her latest book, Sizzle Reel, a celebrity romance with a unique twist. We then shared some book recommendations in the genres of romcoms, adult thrillers, and contemporary YA novels. Carla's gateway book into romcoms was "The Ex Talk" by Rachel Lynn Solomon, and she recommends some of her favorite recent reads, including "Business or Pleasure" by Rachel Lynn Solomon, "Love & Other Disasters" by Anita Kelly, and "Kiss Her Once For Me” by Alison Cochrun. When we were brainstorming who we could invite to be our first author interview, we had a short list of criteria: We wanted an Irish author, someone who had a book recently released, and someone who we could have a bit of craic with and this lady came straight to mind. Catherine Walsh is the new queen of contemporary Romance in Ireland (and elsewhere if the reviews are anything to go by!) and one of the funnest accounts to follow on Bookstagram. Fun aside, Catherine raises some really excellent points about the lack of visibility and respect for Romance as a genre and we suspect you might think a bit differently about it after you've heard her speak… Both the author and her books have been an absolute joy to get to know and we hope you love the episode as much as we do. Catherine's Recommendations A book to get into reading or get back into reading after a slump Do a re-read of an old favourite Who are your go-to authors? Why and how do books make it to the top of the "New York Times" best books of the year list? We have no idea, but we go through the top 10 and give our thoughts as to why these books are so big and what we think about them. We love Jennifer Egan! The rest of these? Well. You'll see. For some of them, we're not sure about the hullabaloo. We also get into why and how we bring books like these into the Shop and how we make our buying decisions. Should we have ordered more of these books? We'll find out. Then we dive into what we're reading — identifying a whole genre we've named "desperately seeking mommy" books — with a rom-com ("The Ex Talk") and some further shots at Stephen King that are probably gratuitous. Note, however, that Chris Colfer did NOT write the Artemis Fowl books — that's Eoin Colfer, who is a different person. Finally, we wrap up with some books about miserable situations you may or may not be into.

It's more fictional and real-life advice in this action-packed episode! Isabelle Popp, a contributor to BookRiot, stops by to talk about her recent essay about romance novels, and Carly Lane, pop culture critic and "romance nerd" for Collider, Vulture and Paste Magazine, explores her upcoming book A Regency Guide to Modern Life. We'll revisit the vintage romcom The Truth About Cats and Dogs, a Cyrano retelling set against the backdrop of a pet-advice show, and take a peek at The Ex Talk, a contemporary fake dating romance about a relationship advice radio show.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comWriters/Guests You Are Never Too Late to Start Fucking is the best kind of advice: empowering, supportive, never prescriptive but inspiring and hopeful. Girl on the Net writes the most honest, vulnerable yet hilariously funny sex positive posts and produces sizzling hot female-gaze audio porn. This essay is required reading for people over a certain age who are launching themselves again, or people who — for various reasons —may have never fully explored their sexual destiny.Isabelle Popp is a smart, funny and thought-provoking essayist at bookriot.com and her essay Should Romance Novels Reflect Realities or Indulge Fantasies? is a must read for all romance book lovers.Carly Lane is a pop culture critic and expert romance nerd who channels WWJ(A)D (What Would Jane Austen Do?) for her upcoming advice book A Regency Guide to Modern Life: 1800s Advice on 21st-century Love, Friends, Fun, and More. The book will be published this coming February and you can pre-order here.Books/MoviesThis trailer for The Truth About Cats and Dogs has that frantic 90s style but don't let that put you off —my advice is watch or rewatch this romcom pronto. It's silly, smart, funny and ultimately an empowering story about platonic and romantic love.Being a public radio nerd, I soooo enjoy the banter and inside baseball references in The Ex Talk. This fake dating romance about public radio employees who pose as exes to dole out relationship advice on air, while juggling semi-successful professional and disappointing real-life love lives off air, is delightful.Support the show
We invited survivor leader, author, and liberator Harmony Grillo, to share with us about her experience in the commercial sex industry, and the life changing friendship that helped to liberate her. Harmony also explains how her faith became a framework for truth and a foundation for her recovery. She shares how while she believes faith is a huge component in the healing journey, the approach her organization Treasures takes with survivors allows them the freedom of choice rather than policing their decisions. Finally, Harmony gives us her perspective on how sexual exploitation has evolved since she has left this life, and about her banned Ted Ex talk about the harms of legalized prostitution. You can download Harmony's FREE e-training for mentors who are walking alongside a survivor and purchase her memoir: Scars & Stilettos here.

Happy (early) Valentine's Day! Lauren read The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon. Fun, vivacious dialogue and tons of red hot lovin'. Aileen had a much more PG rated read with The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion, about a quirky, schedule-obsessed hero, and the innocent, light-hearted love that he develops for the girl who breaks all the rules.Alisa had the heaviest read this week with Normal People by Sally Rooney, about two people learning to love both themselves and each other in spite of the many obstacles that keep them apart.Josie found her inner wild with Maria Vale's The Last Wolf, the first book in the Legend of All Wolves series. Josie went hog-wild for this series with its phenomenal characters, enchanting world-building, and compelling story line.

In Darius The Great Is Not Okay, Darius is about to take his first-ever trip to Iran while battling depression and meets Sohrab, the boy next door who changes everything and becomes a friend Darius needs. As always, will either of these books make it onto the shelf? In case it's not clear from the title of Paula Danziger's 1994 novel, Amber Brown is not a crayon. Nope — she's a third-grader who's dealing with the news that her best friend Justin will be moving away with his family. In Amber Brown Is Not a Crayon, readers ride the ups and downs of this experience with our spunky heroine. You'll hear Alli and her guest chat about all of those ups and downs on Episode 156. They also discuss the “not like other girls” trope, how to treat young readers with respect, subtle moments of representation, portrayals of divorce, and miniature chocolate chips. Rachel Lynn Solomon is the author of books for teens and adults, including The Ex Talk, Today Tonight Tomorrow, and We Can't Keep Meeting Like This. Follow her on Instagram (@rlynn_solomon).

VIBE CHECK – We're feeling weird about being 1 year into the pandemic. But Danielle and her family watched The Lion King (1994, of course) and Gwen watched Coming 2 America and made Molly Yeh's Spiced Tomato ABCs (which is basically Spaghetti-Os)! * READING SLUMPS – Like so many other readers, we've gone through a reading slump during the pandemic, and we may still be in one... but we have some ideas about why and what to do about it. Gwen suggests scheduling time to read and sticking to it and be ready to work up to reading for longer and longer periods of time. She also suggests reading books of TV/Movies that have been adapted that you've already watched (GENIUS!). For example, she is thinking about rereading the Bridgerton book series... Danielle is already doing this! Also, they still make movie tie-in books!! Danielle suggests reading Harlequin Desire Category Romances, including (but not limited to) the Blackout Billionaires series by Naima Simone, the Bourbon Brothers series by Reese Ryan, as well as Karen Booth and Jules Bennett. Don't sleep in graphic novels: Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, Nimona by Noelle Stevenson Also, give rereading a try: The Reluctant Royals by Alyssa Cole, The Brown Sisters by Talia Hibbert, Sometimes in Love series by Melonie Johnson, The Widow of Rose House by Diana Biller, The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley, Wicked by Gregory McGuire * THE INTIMACY EXPERIMENT by Rosie Danan is in stores on April 6th, 2021! Rosie recommended books! Dalliance and Devotion by Felicia Grossman, Recommended for You by Laura Silverman, and The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon What's bringing Rosie joy? Watching competitive reality TV! Survivor, The Challenge, and Are You the One. * GOALS/WHAT'S BRINGING US COMFORT – Gwen started using the Morning Pages App and this has helped her meet her writing goals. The podcast Natch Beaut is a lot of fun! After listening to a recent episode, Gwen was inspired to start a daily gratitude practice. Gwen is looking forward to Spring TV, including the new season of Top Chef and Marriage or Mortgage. Danielle attempted to clean her desk, but it's really just organized chaos at this point. She also binged WandaVision last weekend and received her first book rec from her daughter: a My Little Pony Graphic Novel!
Marisa and Kelsey are joined by Rachel Lynn Solomon, bestselling author of The Ex Talk and Today Tonight Tomorrow, to discuss how Liza revolutionizes the publishing industry but the mere suggestion that a book should be published on Tuesday (gasp!). Marisa concedes to Josh's himbo charm, Kelsey has a fantastic AU Charles introduction, and Rachel reacts to the concept of a book's pub date changing a week before its release! We also get into the Joyce of it all... and realize that we really need to find someone who knows how foreign rights work!
