St. Louis, King of France, once paid a fortune for Christ's Crown of Thorns — then carried it home barefoot himself. St. Louis IX ruled one of Europe's most powerful kingdoms while attending Mass twice daily and praying the full Liturgy of the Hours. When Christ's actual Crown of Thorns came up for sale in 1238, Louis paid an enormous sum for it and walked barefoot through Paris to carry it home, later building the stained-glass Sainte-Chapelle to house it. He washed the feet of lepers with his own hands. Celebrated annually on August 24 by the Catholic Church, the Church of England, and other Western Christian traditions to honor Bartholomew the Apostle. Often identified as Nathanael from the Gospel of John, an early follower introduced to Jesus by Philip. He Preached the Gospel in regions including India, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Armenia. Tradition holds he was martyred in Armenia by being flayed alive and beheaded. He is the Patron saint of tanners, leather workers, bookbinders, and butchers. Who was Bartholomew the Apostle? At 22, St. Bernard of Clairvaux showed up at a monastery gate with thirty friends who all wanted to become monks. St. Bernard gave up wealth and comfort to found the monastery of Clairvaux, bringing thirty companions with him. He grew close to Jesus through Lectio Divina — slowly praying with Scripture until it opened like a door — and through a tender devotion to Our Lady, whom he called the aqueduct of God's grace. He went on to found 68 monasteries and became known as the "honey-sweet Doctor." Servant of God Nicholas Black Elk went from Lakota warrior to Catholic catechist who brought over 400 people to baptism. Nicholas Black Elk lived through the Battle of Little Bighorn and the tragedy of Wounded Knee before being baptized Catholic in 1904. From then on, he rode across the Lakota lands of South Dakota as a catechist, teaching his own people about Baptism, the Eucharist, and Our Lady in words only he could speak. His cause for sainthood is now open with the Catholic Church. "He spent the first half of his life searching for truth. At almost eighty years old, St. Helena crossed the ancient world on pilgrimage to find the actual Cross of Jesus. St. Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, traveled thousands of miles to Jerusalem in her final years to walk where Jesus walked. Along the way she visited prisoners, cared for the sick, and gave alms to the poor — pilgrimage lived out through mercy. In Jerusalem, she ordered an excavation near Calvary and, according to ancient tradition, uncovered the True Cross itself. "She didn't just want to read about Calvary. Our Lady of Knock appeared to a rain-soaked Irish village in total silence — and said everything without a word. St. Stephen of Hungary knelt among the poor as a king long before Rome ever sent him a crown. Meet St. Stephen of Hungary, the young Magyar chieftain crowned the first King of Hungary by Pope Sylvester II on Christmas Day, the year 1000. Stephen built churches and monasteries across his kingdom, and alongside his wife Gisela — a true sacramental partnership — helped plant the Catholic faith in a still-pagan land. He even disguised himself as a poor man to hand out alms with his own hands. Saint Ignatius was a Spanish Catholic priest and theologian who dedicated his fascinating and adventurous life to being a soldier for Christ and leader of the Jesuits, which sent Priests to North America on a mission to evangelize the natives. In this solo episode of The Sacred Travel Podcast, Julia takes you into the mysteries of Mount Carmel, one of the most revered sacred mountains of the ancient world and a place deeply connected to prophecy, the Divine Feminine and the Magdalene lineage. 

July 16 is the celebration of a prominent title of the Blessed Virgin Mary — Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The devotion traces back to 12th-century hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. She is especially known as the patroness of the Carmelite Order and the Brown Scapular. The title originates from a group of Christian hermits led by St. Berthold (1140-95) and St. Brocard (1170-1231) who settled on Mount Carmel—the biblical site associated with the Prophet Elijah (900-850 BC)—with the blessing of St. Albert, the Latin Patriarch of of Jerusalem (1149-1214). These hermits built a chapel dedicated to Mary and eventually became known as the Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. They viewed Mary as their spiritual mother and the "Lady of the place," integrating the contemplation of Elijah with devotion to the Virgin. Central to this devotion is the Brown Scapular. According to Carmelite tradition, Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock (1165-1265), a leader of the order, on July 16, 1251, and presented him with the scapular. She promised that those who die wearing it would be preserved from eternal fire. The scapular serves not as a charm, but as a sacramental sign of Mary's protection and a commitment to living a life of prayer and devotion. Saint Irenaeus (130–202 AD) was a Greek bishop recognized as one of the most important early Church Fathers and one of it's first major apologist. He is noted for his role in guiding and expanding Christian communities in the southern regions of present-day France and, more widely, for the development of Christian theology by opposing Gnostic interpretations of Christian Scripture and defending orthodoxy. Originating from Smyrna in Turkey, he had seen and heard the preaching of Polycarp, who in turn was said to have heard John the Evangelist. His annual Feast day is June 28 and he is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Protestant Lutheran Churches, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Oriental Orthodox Churches, and the Assyrian Church of the East. He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 2022. That is the image the New Testament reaches for when it says Christ sits at the right hand of God. He does not ascend to rest. He ascends to rule. But here is the question Pentecost asks us: How does a King enthroned in heaven rule the earth? How does the session up there become sovereignty down here? The answer is the Holy Spirit. Today we celebrate Mass for the Feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross; a Feast Day that celebrates how the Holy Cross of our Lord was discovered by St. Helen, mother of St. Constantine, after the Roman persecution of Christ and His Church. What a blessing we have so soon after Holy Week of remembering the might and loving work of Jesus Christ for us upon the Cross once again. Today we remember two revelations of what Christ accomplished for us as He lowered Himself to suffering and death on the Cross. By the Cross, we are delivered as Satan and the demonic are thrown down and maimed. And, by the Cross of Christ, we are healed. The moments in time of Christ our God upon the Cross were the very moments where everything changes. The Fall is undone and the age of the salvation of mankind is opened.
