Amanda's passion for public finance harkens back to her undergrad days. Yet before grad school, she had never intended to pursue applied public policy work. Her interest in social theory and the effects of capitalism in international aid and development led her to pursue an MA in geography. After finishing her thesis on post-earthquake reconstruction efforts in Haiti, she landed a job researching Illinois' public pension systems.Soon, she was neck deep in public finance questions reminiscent of her scholarship. Reveling in that work led Amanda to reconsider her future career. And when she discovered that University of Illinois at Chicago's PhD in urban planning and policy program included faculty with geography and public finance experience, she found her doctoral calling. Now her work at UIC's Government Finance Research Center continues the thread of helping people understand where their money goes—and how it's being used. Had Amanda not been open to a job in applied policy, she might never have found industry work she loves. Note: Apologies in advance to listeners without strong Illinois or Chicago ties. We delve into the weeds a bit — just a bit — of Land of Lincoln and Windy City taxes and finances. But to the locals: Enjoy! How do China, Hezbollah, int'l NGO's, Iran, Palestinian politics, Gaza, Israel, Jihadism, and illicit financial networks connect? Dan and Benny sat down with Dr. Jonathan Schanzer, terrorism finance analyst and Senior VP of Research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies to find out! Dr. Jonathan Schanzer is senior vice president for research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), where he oversees the work of the organization's experts and scholars. He is also on the leadership team of FDD's Center on Economic and Financial Power, a project on the use of financial and economic power as a tool of statecraft. Jonathan previously worked as a terrorism finance analyst at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he played an integral role in the designation of numerous terrorist financiers. He has held previous think tank research positions at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and the Middle East Forum. Jonathan has written hundreds of articles on the Middle East, along with more than a dozen monographs and chapters for edited volumes. His new book, Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War (FDD Press 2021), challenges and corrects the some of the wildly inaccurate news reported during the conflict. It is the first book published on the war. His three other books have made unique contributions to the field. State of Failure: Yasser Arafat, Mahmoud Abbas, and the Unmaking of the Palestinian State (Palgrave Macmillan 2013) argues the main roadblock to Palestinian statehood is the Palestinian Authority's political dysfunction and mismanagement. Hamas vs. Fatah: The Struggle for Palestine (Palgrave Macmillan 2008) is still the only book on the market that analyzes the ongoing Palestinian civil war. Al-Qaeda's Armies: Middle East Affiliate Groups and the Next Generation of Terror (Washington Institute for Near East Policy 2004) was the first to explore the al-Qaeda franchises of the Middle East. Jonathan testifies often before Congress and publishes widely in the American and international media. He has appeared on American television channels such as Fox News and CNN, and Arabic language television channels such as Al-Arabiya and Al-Jazeera. In today's podcast, I will be sharing something new that will be happening on ‘The Energy Shift' and I am so super excited to announce it in this episode. Each month I will be sharing a monthly ‘Energy and Life Forecast'. But before you go thinking all voodoo and woo woo, these episodes are really just about discussing what you can expect during the next month and perhaps some new insights in how to approach your daily normal life with more awareness, intentions, and mindfulness. All of these key positions are what led Naresh to start Krish Media and Marketing in 2013. According to Naresh’s LinkedIn profile, Krish Media and Marketing is a full service online and digital business solutions provider. Krish focuses on design, SEO, reputation management, affiliate marketing, and copywriting to name a few of their services. Naresh is a very practical thinker, and one of the first things you will notice from the beginning of this episode is that he is not saying the same things as most other entrepreneur speakers. Naresh encourages people with a dream of being an entrepreneur to start that dream with some cash-flow and said that when he started his business it was not with nothing, he continued to work his job and prepare before making that leap into being self employed. He was all alone in his business ventures until after a few months of having great client relationships, clients started asking if he could do more, and Naresh answered that he could. This is what led Naresh to find other partners to work with to accomplish the tasks that his clients needed. Enjoy this weeks episode of Business Playmakers in what is sure to be one of the best episodes related to marketing and business.
