To commemorate this year's World Cancer Day, we're looking back on one of our all-time favourite episodes, featuring the late Catherine Wines. Catherine was the Co-Founder of WorldRemit, one of the fastest growing FinTechs in the UK, allowing people to send money to friends and family living abroad.Catherine was one of the most high-profile female leaders in FinTech and it came as a real shock to the industry when she lost her battle to stage 3 pancreatic cancer in 2020. We have benefited first-hand from Catherine's ongoing mentorship and support, and couldn't think of a better way to raise awareness of and commemorate World Cancer Day, by re-sharing some of our favourite moments from our conversation with her. Zu diesen zählen u.a. Zu seinem Portfolio gehören u.a. Isar Aerospace, 1Komma5Grad, Bliq und LiveEO. Das frische Kapital wird genutzt, um ein größeres Team aufzubauen und die Entwicklung des Microliners voranzutreiben. It's 2022 and as we head into year three of this pandemic, Omicron, the latest coronavirus variant of concern, continues to surge. Due to pandemic-related restrictions, digital wallets have become the primary mode of sending and receiving money. Because of the large number of overseas Filipino workers, fintech or financial technology plays a key role in financial inclusion in the Philippines. “You can see that the market is shifting towards digital receive methods,” said Earl Allan E. Melivo, country director of cross-border digital payments service WorldRemit. “We're already seeing that as evidence of ... a more efficient industry.” In this B-side episode, Mr. Melivo explains to BusinessWorld reporter Brontë H. Lacsamana how the pandemic is spurring the rise of digital financial services, and how internet penetration is hobbling it. Recorded remotely on Dec. 16, 2021. Produced by Brontë H. Lacsamana, Paolo L. Lopez, and Sam L. Marcelo.

Oyindamola Akinrinola, a 23-year-old Nigerian citizen has been convicted for her role in fraud schemes that targeted victims across the United States.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, 23-year-old Oyindamola Akinrinola of Lawrence has pleaded guilty in federal court for her role“Akinrinola and her co-conspirator in Nigeria victimized individuals, several elderly, through a variety of online scams,” said U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister. “She now faces time in federal prison for her crimes. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to prioritize the investigation and prosecution of fraud schemes like these, no matter where they originate. I also take this conviction as an opportunity to reiterate to all Kansans the vulnerability of our senior citizens to scams and con artists, who prey upon them. We must all be vigilant to protect our parents, grandparents, elderly relatives, friends and neighbors from such frauds and fraudsters.”“Scams such as lottery, online dating, and impersonating Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees continue to be a major threat to taxpayers, especially senior citizens,” said J. Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. “Scammers will use a variety of techniques to cheat taxpayers. TIGTA will do everything within its power to ensure that those involved in the impersonation of IRS employees are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We appreciate the assistance of the U.S. Department of Justice in this effort.”According to U.S. Attorney McAllister, the charges, and other information presented in court: Akinrinola, a Nigerian national who was granted legal permanent residency in the United States in 2018, was part of a scheme to defraud U.S.-based victims out of money and property. Akinrinola's co-conspirator in Nigeria orchestrated several scams, such as tricking victims into believing they were eligible for fictitious awards or establishing purported (but false) romantic relationships with victims and exploiting their affections. The co-conspirator in Nigeria directed victims to send money to Akinrinola. While in Kansas as a college student, she received funds from the scam victims—in amounts ranging from hundreds of dollars to as much $20,000—via wire transfers, money orders, financial applications, Wal-Mart money grams, Western Union, the United States Postal Service, and various other means. Akinrinola kept a portion for herself as her reward and sent the bulk of the funds to her co-conspirator in Nigeria. To do so, she generally used the Sendwave, WorldRemit, or Boss Revolution mobile applications. The following are just a few examples of the scams Akinrinola and her co-conspirator perpetrated:Victims 1 and 2 received Facebook messages from an individual who purported to be with FedEx. They were told they won a $130,000 grant and that FedEx would deliver the cash after Victim 2 paid a “case file fee.” Victim 2 then deposited $2,500 cash into a Bank of America account for the fee. Victim 2 was then told she needed to pay another $1,000 for a “winning certificate.” Because Victims 1 and 2 did not have $1,000, they allowed the purported Facebook account holder to purchase three iPhones through their Verizon account. Victims 1 and 2 were instructed to mail the iPhones to Akinrinola (in Kansas). Victim 2 then received an image from the Facebook account claiming to be from the IRS and requesting $15,000 before release of the grant funds.Victim 3 was the victim of an online dating scam and lost approximately $8,000, of which he sent $900 to Akinrinola via a kiosk at a Walgreens store.Victim 4 also was the victim of an online dating scam. Victim 4 lost approximately $3,815, and he sent $710 to Akinrinola. Victim 4 believed the money was for musical instruments for children in Nigeria.Victim 5 was the victim of a Facebook scam. A man on Facebook, known to Victim 5 as “Steven,” told Victim 5 that he was in the military and needed money, and Victim 5 sent $1,000 to Akinrinola in this scam.Sentencing is scheduled for June 15, 2021 at 9:00 am, before U.S. District Judge Holly L. Teeter.

The word ‘inspiring’ gets thrown around a lot when discussing entrepreneurs and business owners. However, with today’s guest, we can’t think of a more accurate or deserving description. Today’s 40 Minute Mentor is the incredible Catherine Wines, co-founder of WorldRemit. WorldRemit is a mission-driven online money transfer service that allows people to send money to friends and family living abroad. WorldRemit is one of the most successful and fastest growing Fintechs in the UK, with a worth of almost $1bn, employing over 700 people and serving 4 million customers across 150 countries. Catherine is one of the most high profile female leaders in Fintech so it came as a real shock to the industry when she was diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer in 2018. Despite the shock of this and the ensuing treatment she has had to go through, she has remained incredibly positive and active throughout. She continues to support WorldRemit’s as a Non-Exec Director whilst also mentoring and advising a number of other start up founders (including fellow 40 Minute Mentor guest, Alex Stephany of Beam). Since her diagnosis, she’s paved the way for firms to improve the way they support employees living and working with cancer. We go into detail on this in today’s show and Catherine shares some great advice for anyone out there either living with, or supporting a loved one or colleague with, cancer. In today’s conversation you’ll hear about a number of interesting topics, including: • Why Catherine set up WorldRemit and how she has grown the business from a small start up to a team of over 700 employees across 6 continents. • Her philosophy on living with cancer and how she is happy to talk about it in order to raise awareness and change perceptions about it • Plus, her thoughts on the importance of mentorship, championing women in tech and why she got involved with Beam, the tech for good start up that helps homeless people get back in to work and off the street. It was an absolute pleasure speaking with Catherine about her many achievements and hearing her unique and uplifting approach to life. She truly is an inspiration and is certainly a great reminder to live life to the fullest, and without regret. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, so please do get in touch at james@jbmc.co.uk If you want to find out more about Catherine, check out her LinkedIn profile – https://www.linkedin.com/in/catherine-wines-8060b26/ If you want to find out more about WorldRemit you can have a look at their website – https://www.worldremit.com/

Key Takeaways: As Sandra says, we have to “think about what the right channel for each person is, along with the right content, context, time, and frequency… as she said “the number of possibilities increase a ton and it becomes hard for the marketer to figure all of that out if they don’t have the machine to rely on.” So, use machines to help you where it makes sense. How can you break through and be more customer centric? If they want to, WorldRemit’s app users can sign up for daily push notifications to see daily transfer rates instead of typical emails. These notifications alone drive nearly 8% of their app traffic. Find what your audience wants, and deliver it! Not everything that matters is measurable, and not everything that’s measurable matters. This is the second time I’ve heard this in the past week, and for good reason: the data explosion can create a mental construct that “if we can, we should.” But it’s not that simple, and not always feasible to measure everything under the sun. Identify the activities and key results you’re looking to drive, and focus there. Full Shownotes: https://www.emarsys.com/en/resources/podcasts/worldremit-marketing-sandra-wroe

Welcome to the Tearsheet Podcast. I'm Zack Miller. Catherine Wines has seen how technology has impacted the remittance business. When she co-founded WorldRemit in 2010, she envisioned doing to remittance what the online travel agencies had done to their industry. Fast forward a few years and her firm, WorldRemit is one of the fastest growing tech companies in the U.K. and from a valuation perspective, is progressing toward unicorn status. On the podcast this week, we talk about what prompted her to take on such a large, stodgy industry and why it's been so hard to move money internationally. We discuss her view on the role of cash in our economy and WorldRemit's international growth plans. Catherine Wines is our guest today for the Tearsheet Podcast.
