If [you're] seeing something is not working, don't just cross your fingers and hope it is going to change. Get up, turn, keep going.” Kristi is so excited to be joined by Margaret Wishingrad, Co-Founder and CEO of Three Wishes – a better-for-you cereal brand. Margaret and her husband own an advertising agency in NYC which inspired her to create her own brand. Margaret saw a true need in the market for a healthier cereal option. There were 3 things (wishes) she wanted to change about cereal – high protein, low in sugar, and gluten and grain free. In today's episode of The Irresistible Factor, Margaret shares how she believes having a delicious product is the most important part of a successful brand. Margaret spent 2 years developing her product to make sure it was absolutely perfect before launching by getting lots of people involved in taste testing her product – in fact, during Covid, she actually did drive through taste tests from her driveway! “Good branding can only get you so far, but the product and what's inside is really the key.” Building a brand is never easy, but if you've identified a problem worth solving and you stick to your mission, it pays off. Margaret has some fascinating insights into the challenges of having a brand versus working on a brand and shares some of the lessons she's learned along the way. Margret shares tips on getting retailers invested in your product, successfully running an omnichannel business, and how to always be a few steps ahead! Most importantly, how to push through challenges, and never give up! “Never give up. Eventually, it pays off.”

Today I'm joined by Margaret Wishingrad, Founder of Three Wishes Cereal.  In the 12 months since launching, Margaret and her husband slash business partner Ian have built a multi-million dollar business through thoughtful retail expansion, unique guerrilla marketing moments, and a tasty better-for-you product that people want to keep buying. We're going through the blueprint to launch and why it's important to keep your customers' behavior front of mind.  Three Wishes is a healthy cereal that tastes like childhood indulgence, led by the cereal aisle's first female founder, Margaret Wishingrad. While other cereals on the shelf force customers to choose between flavor and nutrition, there's no compromise with Three Wishes. It's high protein, low sugar, gluten and grain-free, and made from ingredients like chickpeas, pea protein, and tapioca.  In this episode, we discuss Three Wishes' extremely successful launch strategy, how to go about the financials after making sure you have a great minimum viable product, and making sure to get your product on Amazon. I absolutely loved chatting to someone who's such an innovator in a traditional space. Our top five learnings (it was hard to narrow it down!) from chatting with Margaret are the following: There is no ‘too early', once you have a product that you're comfortable with and ready to get into retail you should start talking to those buyers When something isn't working, instead of freaking out and not knowing what do, take a step back, pivot quick, change and keep going Having the flexibility and understanding of how to quickly turn things around and be resourceful is an absolute saving grace  A total of 45% of searches begin on Amazon, it's a search engine in its own right and for that reason a very important channel to focus on.  If you're scared to get started, yank the band-aid, just go for it - whatever is holding you back, look it in the eye, just go for it By the way! Margaret Wishingrad didn't grow up eating healthy foods.  But as an adult, she developed healthy habits. She continued those habits when her first child was born, but she couldn't find a healthy alternative to the sugar-filled cereals that lined the shelves.  And Three Wishes Cereal was born.  Wishingrad and her husband, Ian, spent two years testing new methods and ingredients to create a grain-free and dairy-free cereal with high protein and low sugar that actually tastes good.  Today, Three Wishes is a customer favorite and sells multiple flavors online and in stores across the country.  Turning her idea into a full-fledged brand took work and a focus on solving a problem. Wishingrad had to start by identifying the real need for her product. She did customer research and talked to countless people and what they were looking for in a cereal. Identifying and solving a real problem made it easier to sell the product to retailers and get coveted shelf space.  Wishingrad has also built the brand by staying in tune with customers and moving quickly. A challenge of launching a food brand during a pandemic was that customers weren't shopping in stores and couldn't experience and taste the product in person. But Wishingrad saw grocery shoppers were moving online and quickly re-launched the website to create a smooth buying funnel. When customers started returning to in-person shopping, they were already familiar with Three Wishes because of its online presence.  In the busy online world, Wishingrad says marketing comes down to identifying who you are speaking to and speaking to them—simple as that. For Three Wishes, that meant communicating with parents and giving them a quick and healthy breakfast solution for their families.  Building a customer-centric brand also requires creativity. Without the ability to showcase their products in person, the Wishingrads created a drive-thru taste test right in their driveway. They safely gave neighbors and community members samples of their cereal as they drove through the driveway and then sent photos of the event to the local paper. The heartwarming story of a brand serving its community during the pandemic was picked up by news outlets across the country and led to huge exposure for Three Wishes and the company's biggest online sales day—all from just a few hand-painted signs and creativity.  Any idea has the potential to become a successful customer-centric brand. Wishingrad shows it takes dedication and creativity, as well as a push to solve a real problem and communicate it well. ________ Blake Morgan is a customer experience futurist, keynote speaker, and author of the bestselling book The Customer Of The Future. For regular updates on customer experience, sign up for her weekly newsletter here.  Join the new Customer Experience Community here.
