At one point, Gary actually says that we should be less concerned with what AI means to us and more concerned with what it says about us.The last 15 minutes get pretty sci-fi, and we touch on why we need to write with more soul, heart, and purpose… and why it might important to our very existence. It's a long conversation and I hope you can make time for all of it – It just kept getting better.Click here to get your FREE copy of the Imagine a Place journalFollow Imagine a Place on LinkedInConnect with Doug Shapiro on LinkedIn

Experience Strategy has expanded over the past decade to include a wide range of disciplines: CX, UX, Patient Experience, Employee Experience, Service Design, and so many more. With all these exes running around, experience strategy can sometimes sound like a country & western song. Today we are joined by Gary David, a Professor of Sociology, and Professor of Information Design and Corporate Communication at Bentley University, and the voice of ProfessorEXP on Twitch. We look at how we can learn from cultural ethnography to tame the wild west of exes by learning shared languages and measuring what really matters. KEY TAKEAWAYS Disintegrated systems cost everyone: customers, companies, and employees It's tempting to rely on standardized metrics like NPS, but they often oversimplify and mislead paths in their understanding of customer needs. To measure what really matters, continue asking “why” and “to what end” to find metrics that matter for both the customer and the company. “Do you want to have measurable impact or real impact?” ~Gary David It's up to experience strategists to become multi-linguists who understand the intention behind different disciplines. Higher education is a prime example of disintegrated systems. To integrate, as with companies, employee and customer metrics must reward integration. BIO Gary David, a Professor of Sociology, and Professor of Information Design and Corporate Communication at Bentley University. He is the founder of ethno-analytics, LLC, a consultancy that focuses on integrated design and experience alignment. We look at “the collective,” how our experience gets shaped differently when we experience things with others.  We consider Gartner's definition of customer experience that underscores the importance perceptions and feelings play in CX.  Gary has a slightly different spin on that. He began attending 12 step recovery meetings over 6 years ago, and the connections between his experiences growing up and his experience raising a child with a rare disease are impactful. Together, we discuss the powerlessness of being a parent to a rare child, the importance of focusing on your reaction, and the importance of self-care while doing so.Listen along as Gary describes to Sanath the similarities between the popular show Naked and Afraid and meeting his own needs as a parent and where he needs to put his focus first. Think building a house in the forest instead of feeling as if you need to fight off the forest. One of those needs is the importance and power of connections formed with people going through similar realities (Al-anon, parenting a child with rare disease, sports, etc.) As you are able to connect with a community based on common ground, it strengthens you. Punk is more than songs; it is an ethos, as well as an aesthetic. The punk lifestyle and its music is all about attitude, and fighting against norms, traditional dogma, social injustice, and intolerance. It strives to move outside of how things have always been done, as well as being cautious of authority. The more society tells you that you should be doing something, the more likely you are to see punks heading in the other direction. Today we’re talking with Adrian Swinscoe, customer experience guru and author of the book Punk CX, which draws on his love of the punk lifestyle and culture to make the case that we need to rethink the overly bureaucratic and out of touch consumer experience apparatuses of many corporations. The Hopi of the Desert Southwest are known today as superb sky watchers and dry farmers, but long ago they were also accomplished sailors. This book explores the tribe's links to the South Pacific, Easter Island, Egypt, India, and Mayan Central America, where psychic Edgar Cayce claims a lost Hall of Records awaits discovery. Other topics include: hourglass symbols, lunation triangles, Ant People, Birdman, the Dogon of Africa, Lascaux, Orion the Hand Constellation, and the cosmic Kundalini quest to the heart of the Milky Way. "Gary David, whose work on the archaeoastronomy of the Southwest is of the first importance, generously shared his extensive knowledge and insights with me on a journey through Arizona and New Mexico."-Graham Hancock, America BeforeFrom Chapter 1: The Road to OrionIn the spring of 1997 I embarked on a research and writing quest that would last to this day. That fall I would turn 45, and my midlife crisis involved a change of literary partners: from poetry to nonfiction. I had been living with my family in northern Arizona for a few years, and had begun to explore the incredibly complex and intriguing Hopi culture, as well as their ancestral rock art in the region. During a drive to the reservation in order to watch the katsina (kachina) dancers, those bizarre, multicolored masked spirit messengers, I had an epiphany of sorts. I had recently read Robert Bauval’s book The Orion Mystery, which basically posits that the three pyramids on the Giza Plateau corresponded to the belt stars of Orion. Up ahead on the lonely, arrow-straight road going north lay the three primary Mesas upon which the Hopi had lived, grew food, prayed and performed religious ceremonies for over a millennium. What if, I idly imagined, that triad of flat-topped mountains where the Hopi had constructed their stone and adobe villages were also an “Orion Correlation”? I put those wispy daydream clouds in the back of my mind and proceeded to experience the peaceful but pragmatic Hopi themselves. After witnessing a number of sacred katsina dances of inestimable power and beauty, I returned home and got out a map of Arizona and a sky chart. What I found astounded me! There was a Hopi village or ruin site corresponding to each major star in the constellation—not just the belt stars. Not only that, there appeared to be an inter-relationship between the ancient villages, separated by many miles, that were aligned to sunrise and sunset points on the horizon at the summer and winter solstices. Perfectly projected upon the high desert, Orion also incorporated what I came to call a “chakra line,” running down the middle of the constellation’s terrestrial configuration. It stretched from southwestern Colorado to the mouth of the Colorado River and contained more that a dozen villages or ruins. In addition, the template also encompassed the spectacular Ancestral Puebloan “star city” of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico—the largest groups of ruins in the American Southwest corresponding to Sirius, the brightest stellar body in the heavens. As we shall see, many vistas full of mystery and majesty unfold on the road to Orion.

You can call Gary David all kinds of things. Sociology professor. Ethnographer. Professional noticer. Professional outsider. A *Storage Wars* guy. He is, in short, someone with a very particular view of social science and how it translates into organizational behavior. In a recent *Resonance Test* chin wag with our Toby Bottorf, David offers up a collection of smart, tart *bon mots.* In the course of the conversation he explains the formula “Data + Context = Information” by calling in the cops: “You can't understand what crime stats mean, unless you understand police practice.” He talks about how his CX analysis focuses on the interactions customers have with a company, rather than on perceptions. “By looking at the interactions, we can see what is actually going *on* in the encounter.” As for *Storage Wars,* he's fascinated by the way the show puts a price tag on contestants' pickings: “[R]ight now you just got a bunch of stuff in your trunk, that you bought. So you're actually *down* money,” he says, adding, professorially, that the show “con*structs* the notion that these numbers are an accurate reflection of some concrete state—and they're not. They're approximations.” But maybe the best moment of all is when David gets earnest and describes his efforts this way: “You're trying to help workers actually leverage their expertise and their knowhow and become more self-actualized, in almost a Maslow sense, in their work.” Host: Jen Ashman Editor: Kyp Pilalas Producer: Ken Gordon

The title of this week's show may sound academic, but consider this - what we do as a society to interact with each other can and does affect our health. For example, if your doctor is not culturally competent, will he/she really understand that it's hard for you to eat fresh fruit and veggies on a daily basis because you may live in a food desert? What role does bias play for both the patient and healthcare professional during a medical visit? And what about technology in the healthcare field? What impact might electronic medical records have on your ability to receive proper care? We'll talk about these issues with Gary David,Ph.D., Associate Professor of Sociology at Bentley University, and President, Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology and cardiologist Dr. Keith Newby, Friday, September 28 at noon on 89.5 WHRV-FM

The phrase "As above, so below" is attributed to the Egyptian god of wisdom named Thoth. This echoes the biblical expression “on earth as it is in heaven.” Many diverse ancient cultures have erected sacred cities, pyramids, standing stones, or temples in order to mirror the stars. In particular the constellation Orion has been repeatedly projected as a talismanic pattern on numerous landscapes around the world. This book describes the sky-ground templates of Egypt, the American Southwest, Mexico, Nazca, the UK, Europe, Syria, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and other regions. It also discusses the celestial rituals of the Mithras cult, the Age of Taurus, the Sirius cosmology of the Dogon, and South African rock art. This essential archaeo-astronomy primer expands the star correlation theory to encompass the entire globe. "The parallels Gary David has found between the ancient Egyptian sky-ground system involving the pyramids of Giza and the constellation of Orion, and a similar project to build heaven on earth by the Hopi of Arizona, are eerie, compelling and deeply thought-provoking.” –Graham Hancock, author of Fingerprints of the Gods “Gary David’s work is a treasure of enormous importance.” –William Henry, author of Lost Secrets of the Watchers Gary A. David has been an independent researcher of Southwestern archaeological ruins and rock art for over twenty-five years. His books about the Hopi and other ancestral Pueblo cultures of Arizona and New Mexico include: The Orion Zone (2006), Eye of the Phoenix (2008), The Kivas of Heaven (2010), and Star Shrines and Earthworks of the Desert Southwest (2012).  Mr. David earned a master’s degree from the University of Colorado and is a former college professor.

This Memorial Episode is dedicated to my mother, Billie Sue Borgmeyer, and includes a very personal look at my deepest "Why". Not the "Start with Why" that Simon Sinek made famous in his book with that title, but the deeper WHY that set me on a journey far from home in search of something of which I more frequently doubt the importance. While I challenge you to take up the question for yourself, I also want you to know that I offer no real answers here. It is something I am still exploring on my own. My mother was born with the name of Billie Sue, but grew up being called "Lizzie", "Billie" or just plain "Sue" - though she was always far from plain. She became Billie Sue Neeley when she married Bill Neeley, the brother of her best friend, Billie Sue Neeley (later Throneberry)... and this was just the start of the craziness that really was the essence of our family. Together they had six children, Theresa Sue, Larry Allan (deceased), Gary David (aka "Peewee"), William Paul (deceased - Season 2, Episode 251), Michael Kelly (that's me), and Lisa Clarann (her favorite child... at least according to the obituary... which Lisa wrote and submitted to the papers... we all laughed). And that was our nature. There was probably as much laughter at my mother's funeral service as there were tears. We knew how to celebrate life and my mom wouldn't have wanted it any other way. You'll catch much of that humor in this episode. My parents divorced when I was young, and mom later married Bernard Borgmeyer, who was with her for 42 years... right up to the end. His only son, my step-brother Ronnie, died a couple of months ago (Season 2, Episode 270), and now Bernie is stuck with last four of the "Wild Bunch"... well, us and about a gazillion grandkids and great grandkids. Good luck, Bernie! ;) If you want to purchase The Conscious Life Summit, use the coupon code EARLYBIRD upon checkout and you’ll get it for only $47.
