On this episode of Talkin' Rock, it's one rocker, an author, and the woman who runs Metallica's very successful All Within My Hands foundation. Up first, it's the legendary drummer Gil Moore of Triumph. The Magic Power - An All-Star Tribute To Triumph drops on June 6th, and it's packed with rock heavy hitters—Slash, Alex Lifeson, Dee Snider, Dorothy, Tommy Aldridge, and a TON more. Then, he talks about upcoming plans with the band, including something called a mixed reality tour. I don't know what that is, Gil said no one does because it hasn't been done before. He explains that part of it. Next, it's music journalist/author, Martin Popoff. We discuss his new 666-page book on Iron Maiden called Hallowed By Their Name. Martin has written over 130 rock books, so he knows a thing or sixty on the topic of rock and metal bands. We did get into some rock talk, which I really wanted to do. We talked about why Maiden has had so much success around the world, specifically outside of the United States. He speaks to who he thinks is the biggest metal band in the world and lots more. I'll have Martin back again in the future, he's a great guest. Finally, Renee Richardson, who runs Metallica's All Within My Hands foundation. She speaks to what they do, the birth of the foundation, how she got involved, and more. She also co-hosts the Metallica Report podcast, which is very well done. Fun conversation with Renee. Thanks for listening!

Hi, everybody! Here's PART 2 of my interview with RIK EMMETT, recorded live in the cozy confines of his studio loft. We take a deep dive into his legendary career as the songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist extraordinaire for Canadian rock icons TRIUMPH!Our conversation kicks off with Rik's early days in Toronto, his decision to pursue music over sports, and his fateful first meeting with Mike Levine and Gil Moore, where he immediately recognized Gil's sharp business acumen and Mike's record production skills. Rik generously shares memories from each TRIUMPH album and how major support from US radio and MTV/MuchMusic impacted the band's success. We also explore his incredible songwriting contributions, including classics like “Lay It on the Line,” “Hold On,” “Fight the Good Fight,” “Ordinary Man,” “Magic Power,” “Somebody's Out There” and “Never Surrender.”More than 40 years after exploding onto the scene, one thing remains crystal clear: Triumph's legacy lives on. The Canadian hard-rock power trio stands out as a visionary, uniquely influential force—known for their virtuosic musicianship, soaring melodies, electrifying live shows and powerful songwriting with a positive message. It was an absolute honour to interview Rik and we had plenty of laughs along the way! This week we continue our journey to the Great White North! This is the triumphant finale of our celebration of an amazing power trio from Toronto that has been largely forgotten in the pantheon of rock n' roll: TRIUMPH! From classic hard rock & metal to proggy AOR, this is a band that rarely gets the praise they deserve! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that Captain Content has mentioned before as a band he would love to dive into deeper. While not the most obscure band we've ever covered (they have multiple platinum and gold albums in the US and Canada), they have been largely forgotten as the rock giants they once were. We think they should be remembered as titans or rock and thus: Huge-er-er!!! Rik Emmett is a vocalist, guitarist and former member of the rock band Triumph, which earned 18 gold and nine platinum records in Canada and the United States in the late 1970s and early'80s. Triumph was known for its BIG live shows featuring lights, pyrotechnics, and lots of spandex (as was appropriate for the era!). Along with Rik's bandmates Gil Moore and Mike Levine, the power trio played loud, guitar-forward tunes with uplifting lyrics. 1981's Allied Forces sold over a million copies in the US and included the songs “Fight the Good Fight” and “Magic Power,” which—if you haven't heard it recently—merits a listen on your favorite music app. Eventually, disputes with the record label, the financial stress of touring / recouping advances, and intra-band competition lead to Triumph's break-up. In his new memoir, Lay It on the Line: A Backstage Pass to Rock Star Adventure, Conflict and Triumph, Rik shares insights into the trials and tribulations of the rock n roll life and how he has found peace as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. The band and has been inducted into both the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.  In this episode, 'Rik and I discuss: How the pressure to churn out hits affects the songwriting process Why he started sharing his songwriting royalties with his bandmates Triumph's performance at the 1983 US Festival, which was founded by Steve Wozniak How a start-up network called MTV used a Triumph promo video to help fill its schedule The cruel arc of celebrity and how an artist deals with "the whimpering disappointment of general disinterest." ⭐ Rate and Review Crazy Money here. It's always a pleasure to talk with the Triumph front man. Rik Emmett's new book is out and it's a great read for any Triumph fan, or any music fan in general. "Lay It On The Line: A Backstage Pass to Rock Star Adventure, Conflict and TRIUMPH" is out now.  Rik was, well, like an open book when I spoke with him. He told me that writing this book had it's challenges. He told me the reason he wrote the book, was to learn about himself. Of course there was an aspect of "setting the record straight" from his point of view, but overall he wanted to see what made him tick. He called it a "Journey of self discovery." "How can I be a better me?" was another way he looked at it.  Yes, there's Triumph stories in the book, and he told me some, but it's much more than that. He said he wasn't so interested in the "Sex and Drugs" part of the Sex, Drugs and Rock N' Roll, but more about keeping his own self in shape.  We discussed his leaving the band. That took a long time, because as he put it, the time was never right. Some may or may not know, but Rik wanted to leave Triumph for several years before he finally did. He credited his brother, who had since passed, for getting him back with the guys to play some shows in the early 2000s.  As a band from Canada, the band really broke out of San Antonio, Texas. He said the radio made their careers early on. Also, their stage show was over the top as well. He said drummer, Gil Moore, was really the brains behind all the stage production. Rik gave me some funny instances about Gil working up some  He answered the question as to why he referred to Gil and Mike Levine as "partners", as opposed to bandmates, he said that it was a business from the beginning. "They are friends, but they're not close friends." He said they do have Christmas dinner each year, but that's about it. And, yes, he did send them a copy of the book.  He went into all the Michigan connections he has, including his son who played baseball at Central Michigan on a baseball scholarship. Speaking of Michigan, I had to get a question from guitarist John 5. He answered that question and talked about his admiration for the local guitar hero.  -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown-2/

I'm extremely excited about this episode because I got to talk to Triumph drummer and co-lead vocalist Gil Moore. The band hasn't released a new album since 1992, but it's still a busy time for the legendary Canadian power trio. Triumph was recently inducted into the Heavy Metal Hall of Fame and, just a few weeks ago, a brand new documentary about the band premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. I spoke with Gil about the new documentary (Triumph: Rock and Roll Machine), the Heavy Metal Hall induction, and the recent Allied Forces 40th Anniversary release. We also spoke about the band's history, music, and songwriting, and the projects coming up that Triumph fans will want to know about. Gil Moore is my guest, and I chose the word Triumph for two reasons. The first is how he approaches life as an entrepreneur and a renaissance man when it comes to education. It's also a play on words as Gil is the drummer and one of the vocalists in the band, Triumph, who broke into the USA market, but broke up at their peak when they were selling out stadiums, and their records played worldwide. We chat about Triumph's rise to fame and the reasons behind their breakup, and that alone is a great story. What makes this episode so much more is what Gil did with his life before and afterwards. He built METALWORKS, one of the top recording studios in North America, with nearly 200 Gold and Platinum record awards, and Canadian Music Week (CMW) "Studio of the Year" award for a record 17th time. In addition, METALWORKS INSTITUTE has the largest enrollment of any Ontario media arts college, with over 300 full-time students. As you will soon hear, Gil's ideas to revolutionize education, I hope, will move to the top of the policymaker's charts. Jeff Lindsay makes a return appearance to share a story of an aspiring artist who benefited from a collaboration between METALWORKS and RBC.  Side Note and a true confession:  I tried to play music: Guitar, piano, and even trumpet in school. I could read it and appreciate it; what I lacked was musicality. I couldn't feel it or channel it. This inability made me admire those who can play alone or in a group and choose music as their career. For that reason, I love rock documentaries from the first chords, and then for a very few, their talent, effort, and luck lead to selling out stadiums. How do they manage their trajectory? Who controls their destiny, the artist or the industry? Within their group, who has influence or authority over their creative process and their image? What happens after the band breaks up? ALLIED FORCES by Triumph. Brought to us by Bruce, Triumph was a great band out of Canada that tended to be in Rush's shadow. They hit their greatest commercial success in 1981 with their fourth album Allied Forces. Featuring Gil Moore on drums and vocals, Mike Levine on bass and keyboards, and Rik Emmett on the high vocals and the flying "V" guitar, Triumph wrote stunning anthems and driving rock pieces with a bent to the prog rock and classical styles. This podcast features this impressive album and a number of excellent staff picks from 1981. Allied Forces The title track is the fourth track on the album, with Gil Moore on lead vocals. A solid, straightforward rock song, it didn't get a huge amount of air play on the radio, but it got some attention on the new music video formats like MTV which were just becoming popular in the early 80's. Magic Power This was a very popular anthem, and it amazed the band to start playing this song and hear the audience singing the words back to them. There's a lot of influence here from Led Zepplin (slow starts with crescendos to a driving finish) and The Who (acoustic guitars forming the base, adding synth, followed by off beat drums). Fight the Good Fight A minor key hit with rebellious, libertarian lyrics: "All your life you've been waiting for your chance/where you'll fit into the plan/but you're the master of your own destiny/so give and take the best that you can." Petite Etude This is a straight classical guitar piece by Rik Emmett. Triumph often included a classical style instrumental piece on their albums. ENTERTAINMENT THEME: Theme from "The Fall Guy" A TV show from 1981 which featured Lee Majors playing a Hollywood stuntman by day and moonlighting as a detective. STAFF PICKS: April Wine - Sign of the Gypsy Queen Wayne's staff pick highlights another Canadian band. April Wine's ninth studio album "The Nature of the Beast" contained this cover of a 1972 song by Lorence Hud. This was a moderate hit at the time, though not as popular as "Just Between You and Me," which was their most popular song of this album. DEVO - Working in a Coal Mine Lee Dorsey originally sang Brian's staff pick in 1966. DEVO covers it here and gives it their new wave twist. This song was later included in the soundtrack for the movie Heavy Metal. Diesel - Sausalito Summernight Rob's pick features a Dutch band who hit number 25 on the Billboard top 40 with this one-hit wonder. It's a great storytelling song of a wayward trip in a Rambler not quite ready for the road. Def Leppard - Bringin' on the Heartbreak Bruce's staff pick is Def Leppard's first real hit in the US, off their second album High N Dry. They became successful with this song on video rather than radio. LAUGH TRACK: Rick James - Superfreak We close out with this podcast with this soulful, and somewhat playful song.

Triumph is a Canadian hard rock power trio that was popular in the late 1970s through the 1980s. Between the band's 16 albums and DVDs, Triumph has received 18 gold and 9 platinum awards in Canada and the United States. Triumph was nominated for multiple Juno Awards, including Group of the Year Award in 1979, 1985, 1986 and 1987. Like their fellow Canadians Rush, Triumph began building their reputation across North America as a live band, peaking in the early to mid-1980s. The band was formed by Toronto music veterans Gil Moore (drums, vocals), Mike Levine (bass, keyboards), and Rik Emmett (guitar, vocals) in 1975. It is most important to note that "Somebody Out There", "Love Hurts", "Child of the City" and "Lay It On the Line" are all the SAME GODDAMN BAND. WHAAAAATTTT?!?! Course Materials: Porkopolis, Zonks, Manster of the Year, Beats, Alfred Nobel: War Criminal, Sofa King.
