Everyone has a Batman opinion. Inside your imagination is a definitive Batman: a Batman who should behave this way, and a Batman who should not behave that way. Your tight grip on your Batman is why Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's carefully considered Absolute Batman works so damn well. They fully understand and appreciate how the character has congealed over the last eight decades into a rock-solid idea. For the last eight months, alongside collaborators like Gabriel H. Walta, Marcos Martín, Frank Martin, Muntsa Vicente, and Clayton Cowles, Snyder and Dragotta have chipped away at the quintessential Dark Knight. They've altered elements of his origin, removed his social position, and rearranged his relationship with his rogues. Their Absolute Batman is a Bruce Wayne in motion, moving toward the impenetrable idea in your head, but struggling to match it. Here is a character growing into something, evolving into a recognizable hero for 2025. After confronting Mr. Freeze in issues seven and eight and facing the final days of Matches Malone, Bruce Wayne must reassess his war on Gotham City crime. What lessons did he learn from that awful day at The Zoo? Do his nights as Batman honor his father's sacrifice? As he fights to find himself, a grotesque demonic doppelganger appears - Bane, the nineties sensation who once broke a bat from another universe. FOC for Absolute Batman #9 is today (5/19/25)! Tell your retailers to order a copy for ya. With this comic, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta have cooked an undeniable banquet. As the best alternate reality stories should, they've weaponized your knowledge of these characters against you, subverting in radically compelling ways, while delivering what should never be manipulated. Today's podcast features two conversations. Up first, Scott Snyder joins us for a lengthy look back at the last eight months of Absolute Batman. We discuss Bruce Wayne's continuing development into the Dark Knight, his complex relationship with Joe Chill, his father's killer, and why Bane had to arrive sooner rather than later. Secondly, Nick Dragotta pops in for a conversation about his ultra chonky Bane design, and how what we've seen so far is only a hint of his true monstrosity. Absolute Batman #9 will finally arrive in stores, courtesy of DC Comics, on June 11th. Follow Scott Snyder on Bluesky and Instagram, and subscribe to his Substack. Follow Nick Dragotta on Bluesky and Instagram. This Week's Sponsor We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! An overcast Queensland Autumn Tuesday evening , on the roof of a Leagues on Fulcher Road Red Hill, a solitary man cuts a forlorn figure as pulls the cover off a large spot light pointed into the Brisbane sky and grits his teeth as he flips the switch….. he sighs as sparks shoot from the steampunk switch….. a moment of silence and anticipation…almost gives way to concern that the spot light has failed…… after all its been nine months… then with a wurr and a shudder the brilliant beam sets the South East sky alight….. a silhouette that excites every Broncos fan and tells every other fan…we really don't give a shit… The Ezra Sign… and just like his Gotham City counterpart…. Ezra will answer the call. And the heroes will Grapple with it….

In this heartfelt deep-dive, Greg Alba (Reel Rejects) and writer-director Patrick Hogue explore the cultural earthquake that was Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008), how seeing it in IMAX shaped Greg's love for cinema, and why it remains one of the most impactful movie theater experiences ever. From Heath Ledger's iconic Joker performance, Christian Bale's Batman, to the unforgettable interrogation scene, the Gotham City opening shot, and the prologue before I Am Legend, we unpack why this Batman film redefined superhero movies forever. We also dive into IMAX as a format vs VOD, nostalgia vs spectacle, and compare experiences to movies like Barbenheimer, Cabin in the Woods, Iron Man, Batman Begins, Dark Knight Rises, Hereditary, Talk to Me, Evil Dead, and 28 Days Later. Send us a textHave you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? Tim Burton's 1989 Batman transformed not just how we see the Dark Knight, but how Hollywood approaches superhero films entirely. When Michael Keaton was announced as Batman, fans were outraged. A petition with 50,000 signatures protested the decision. Even Batman creator Bob Kane expressed doubt. Fast forward to today, and many consider Keaton the definitive live-action Batman, perfectly balancing Bruce Wayne's sophistication with Batman's brooding intensity.Jack Nicholson's Joker performance remains legendary. After negotiating a percentage of box office and merchandise sales (earning him between $50-90 million), Nicholson delivered a villain for the ages - theatrical, unpredictable, and genuinely menacing. His iconic line about dancing with the devil still sends chills down spines decades later. What makes this film special is how it broke from convention. Rather than beginning with Batman's origin story, Burton introduces him as an established vigilante, gradually revealing his past through carefully placed flashbacks. The film's gothic visual style, Danny Elfman's unforgettable score, and practical effects created a Gotham City that feels tangible and timeless.Batman grossed $411 million worldwide, holding the record for highest-grossing superhero film until 2002's Spider-Man. More importantly, it proved comic book adaptations could be serious artistic and commercial ventures, paving the way for everything from Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy to today's superhero renaissance. What's your favorite Batman film? Does Keaton still hold the crown as the best Batman, or has another actor claimed the cowl? Share your thoughts and join the conversation!Support the show
For many people, asserting themselves at work is a real challenge. There's a lot of possible reasons for that, including stress, anxiety, new responsibilities, deadlines, personal issues or a lack of self-confidence for example. But there is an active congitive strategy, actually a pretty simple one, based on the psychological concept of "self-distancing," that could help you overcome these obstacles and become more confident in the workplace: the Batman effect. Batman is the powerful, vengeful, and ultra-confident alter ego of Bruce Wayne, a billionaire who was traumatised by the murder of his parents when he was a child. When he dons the Batsuit though, the adult consumed by sadness becomes the hero of Gotham City. In the same way, the Batman effect allows people to access their heroic selves. Why Batman ? Does it work for adults too ? How can I use the Batman effect then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Everyone knows who Batman is (unless you happen to live in Gotham City, then it might take a while) so here's my tribute to the Dark Knight's first big cinematic adventures since the 1960s Adam West camp-fest. Most of us were skeptical about a Michael Keaton/Tim Burton collaboration. We were expecting something ridiculous...Beetleman?!? Batjuice?!? To our surprise, 1989's Batman delivered, thanks in no small part to Jack Nicholson's even battier Joker. We then got a bonkers sequel, Batman Returns, with Christopher Walken in a supporting role that basically steals the show. Of course, I'm a bit biased and maintain that Walken steals every show. Even mine. This POD. CAST. So put on your BatBeats or whatever sort of headphones are handy and have a listen, you'll see who the real "joker" is.Go with a smile!

Is the Joker actually “insane”? Does Two-Face have “multiple personality disorder” by today's standards? From an ethical perspective, do Gotham's rogues belong in prison or in rehab? In works like The Penguin, Joker: Folie a Deux, and Batman: White Knight, DC villains have brought "main character energy" to life, proving themselves as enduring figures in media storytelling—but just how well do these baddies depict the mental health landscape of today, and is there anything wrong with celebrating villain vibes? It's becoming increasingly clear from my recent chats on the podcast and all the ones that happen in emails or DMs that a substantial part of the glass ceiling for women working in the comics medium centers around the editorial level, but is that accurate and what exactly might specific barriers be? Now I don't know about you, but to me, you ask an expert. So, I reached out to Rachel Pinnelas. Rachel, has been an Assistant Editor at both Marvel and DC, has worked as a journeyperson across the industry spending time at Aftershock, Dynamite, and Serial Box, and was a Mad Cave Talent Search Winner in 2022 who I'm hoping can shed some light on that question we've been exploring throughout the month of March for the Women In Comics Feature on the show. If you want an accurate assessment of where things stand with respect to the representation of women in the comics industry, this is as about as real talk as you are going to find. We also get to chat about Rachel's contribution as a writer to DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis Halloween Special with her Scarcrow centered story set in a theater, and what she's up to in the near future which includes an exciting comics related museum show that hopefully I'll get to talk about in the near future. I Know What You Did Last Crisis From the publisher In the blackest night, when the darkness feels infinite, the very fabric of the universe begins to tear…as every major crisis in DCU history rises once again! Even heroes like Nightwing aren't safe when his death might just have the power to reverse the damage of Infinite Crisis! No matter how many times he's been rebooted, audiences are always willing to come back to Gotham City's greatest defender. With so much Bat content out there, there's plenty to dissect, analyze, and of course, rank! This podcast is dedicated to a surgical evaluation of Batman's history, with a focus on ranking several topics in the world of Batman, among other classic Bat themes and characters.Join hosts Daniel Cohen, Pop Break's former Film Editor, and Kris Ingersoll, co-host of the Media/Lit podcast, as they bring on several guests every month to share their passion for the one and only Dark Knight. Bottom-line: If you're a Batman fan, this is required listening. It's time to break out the crystals this month for a SUPERMAN BY THE NUMBERS podcast! That's right, pack your parkas, because we're going to the Fortress of Solitude. As we all know, DC's other big superhero has a big movie coming out this summer. As this is the year of World's Finest, it's time to ramp up our coverage, and what better way to do our first ever Superman centric episode then by ranking the actors who have played the iconic Man of Steel. With Superman, we couldn't relegate this to just film. While Superman has some big movies for sure, his presence in live action television is just as prevalent, as these shows span multiple decades, and cover different periods of Kal-El's life. Don't worry – all the big TV appearances are covered! From the 1950s, to this decade, and all across film and television, this is the Superman rankings you need to hear!Making their return for this epic ranking episode is the co-host of the Anniversary Brothers Podcast and Anime X Pop, Josh Sarnecky, and podcasting director of the pop break, Alex Marcus. And per usual, Alex has his obligatory General Zod moment against Dan. Find out which ranking got Dan's blood boiling this time. BatMarch continues as we cover the 1988 DC comic Batman: The Cult by Jim Starlin & art by Bernie Wrightson. The story follows “Batman's struggle against a messianic cult leader, Deacon Blackfire, who aims to control Gotham City. Blackfire recruits followers from the city's homeless, criminals, and dispossessed, and operates his cult from the sewers. Batman is captured, brainwashed, and even participates in a killing before Robin rescues him.”But first Anthony completes his metamorphosis into going full Weezer with new glasses. Cody's vision, among other things, is questionable. Jake's vision remains superior. The boys talk the latest DC film news. Cody's ranking has infected the podcast. Anthony has Jack Quaid energy. LOTR over Harry Potter every day. This comic has one of the best Batman villains: Deacon Blackfire. Cody's not keen on Jim Starlin's Batman/Bruce Wayne. There are actual stakes in this story with Batman being captured, drugged, and tortured. Cody's son is Jason Todd. We love to see Batman trip balls. This story may or may not be anti-transients. The Dark Knight Rises borrows tremendously from The Cult. This is one of the darkest Batman comics with pimps, hookers, and even Batman just letting a woman get killed in the streets. The art perfectly depicts Batman & Gotham with horror elements and imagery that reflects Batman's mental state throughout the story. Deacon Blackfire does things that some of Batman's main rogue gallery has never accomplished. Do we reveal what we'll do for BatMarch 2026? Is this the only use of Deacon Blackfire in Batman comics? It's been too long since we brought up Stephen Lang but he comes back for some stellar casting this episode. Gotham City is in ruins, on drugs, and mobsters are shooting up the streets.. The Virulent Vivacious Vigilantes scour the bullet-riddled alleyways to bring their reviews of the Max streaming series, The Penguin!
Take me back to Paradise City er Island, where the grass is green and the women have style and are strong. It seems Diana is not the only Amazonian who has left Themyscira. Aresia has come to man's world not on a mission of peace, but a mission of death. Aresia has gathered the Injustice Gang (Star Sapphire, Tsukuri, Grundy, The Shade, and Copperhead) and is using them to collect technology, gems, and more from Gotham City. But when the men start to question her plan, she gasses them. She is making an antigen that infects and kills only men. As a child, she escaped a war-torn country only to have her ship destroyed by pirates. She washed up on Themyscira. The Amazons raised her as one of their own and even used magic to give her Amazonian strength and powers. But she took the Amazonian feelings about men and her history to build hate towards all men. The men of the Justice League are taken down by the antigen. This leaves only Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl to take down Aresia, Sapphire, and Tsukuri. With Hippolyta's help, they damage the plane carrying the antigen bombs. Aresia seemingly goes down with the plane. In the process Wonder Woman and Hippolyta learn the value of men and how the Themysciraian doctrine can be twisted.
