There has been a fundamental shift in understanding metabolic health and chronic disease, particularly Type 2 diabetes, challenging long-standing dietary dogma by emphasizing that insulin resistance is largely driven by overconsumption of refined carbohydrates, not dietary fat or red meat. While highlighting the success of carbohydrate restriction and ketogenic approaches, nutrition is being seen as a powerful tool for reversing diabetes—often more effective and sustainable than conventional medication. The implications are far-reaching, not only for individual health outcomes, but also for reshaping public health strategies in addressing today's chronic disease epidemic. In this episode, I speak with Gary Taubes, Sami Inkinen, and Dr. Greeshma Shetty about an approach to treating Type 2 Diabetes that works. I also discuss how red meat is not to blame, but we should be looking at high sugar and starch diets. Gary Taubes is an award-winning science and health journalist, and co-founder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI). He is the author of The Case Against Sugar, Why We Get Fat, Good Calories, Bad Calories, and, most recently, The Case for Keto. Gary is a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for Science. He has written three cover articles on nutrition and health for The New York Times Magazine, and his writing has also appeared in The Atlantic, Esquire, and numerous "best of" anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers, and is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research. He lives in Oakland, CA. Sami Inkinen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Virta Health, a pioneer in reversing diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes through a nutrition-first approach. Sami's personal connection to diabetes and passion to advance global health was the motivation behind Virta and its innovative care model. Previously, Inkinen was the co-founder of the leading online real estate marketplace Trulia, serving as its COO and president and board member until its IPO and eventual sale to Zillow Group. Dr. Greeshma Shetty, board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, currently serves as a Lead Clinician in the Virta Medical Group and the Director of Quality and Safety at Virta Health. Prior to joining Virta, she was clinical physician educator at Harvard Medical School, where she directed the combined Joslin - Beth Israel Deaconess Endocrine Fellowship program and Co-Directed the Asian American Diabetes Initiative. She is dedicated to clinical excellence, leveraging health technology, transforming healthcare delivery, driving health equity and building high performing teams. SymPhysis Medical, a Galway MedTech company addressing a distressing condition experienced by individuals with late-stage cancer, today announces that it has raised 1.5M in a seed-plus funding round. The investment stems from follow-on investments from Furthr VC, Boole Investment Syndicate, Irrus Investments and HBAN's MedTech Syndicate. SymPhysis Medical was co-founded by CEO, Tim Jones, and Chief Scientific Officer, Dr Michelle Tierney. The company is developing a drainage device, called 'releaze', for individuals with fluid in the chest, a condition which can significantly compromise the quality of life for 50% of people with late-stage cancer. Currently, patients must rely on a nurse or family carer for assistance with draining when they go home. SymPhysis Medical's device will empower patients to manage their condition independently at home, providing a sense of dignity and time away from the hospital, so they can spend it with loved ones. In the last two years, SymPhysis Medical has grown from a team of three to 13, with a strong focus on building its quality and research and development teams. It has also invested in an expanded office space to accommodate its growing team. SymPhysis Medical will use its latest funding - which follows 1.9M investment raised two years ago - to grow its team, continue the development of its device and achieve regulatory clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US. SymPhysis Medical will continue to fundraise for an additional 4.5M+ in early 2024 to further support these activities, along with the expansion of its team in Galway and the US. New hires will be in the areas of research and development, product engineering and commercialisation. The investment comes on the back of a series of successes this year for the SymPhysis Medical team. Earlier this month, the company won the 'MedTech Collaboration Award' at the Irish MedTech Awards for its partnership with the world-renowned UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA). The company also won the Excellence in Innovation award at the inaugural Life Science Industry Awards held earlier in the year. SymPhysis Medical's user-centric approach is rooted in patient and public involvement (PPI) which is a focus of the BioInnovate Ireland programme, a needs-led innovation programme affiliated with Stanford University in the US. The company works closely with NICA's VOICE programme - an international network of patients and family members, partnering with clinicians and innovators to discuss unmet clinical needs - to understand the far-reaching impact of fluid in the chest. Meanwhile, it is developing its product under the guidance of Galway University Hospital Respiratory Consultant, Dr. David Breen. Tim Jones, CEO, SymPhysis Medical, said: "This funding comes at an exciting time for our company as we continue to expand our team and office footprint. We are now in the fine-tuning phase of our product development. The funding, along with the ongoing support we have received from Enterprise Ireland, will bring us to our initial goal of getting regulatory clearance in the US - and our ultimate goal of reaching the unmet needs of cancer patients worldwide. With half of late-stage cancer patients experiencing fluid on the chest, we know that our device will have a profound, global impact on patients and their loved ones at the most difficult time. "From the outset, our focus has been on making this a device for patients, led by patients. Working with patients with life-limiting cancer and their loved ones has provided us with vital insights, which would have been missed if we were solely within a lab setting. These communities are end-user experience subject matter experts and our product is better because of them." Dr David Breen, Consultant Respiratory Physician and Lead Clinician for Lung Cancer Services, Galway University Hospital, said: "Symphysis Medical has shown unwavering commitment to improving devices used for the...

The House of Commons is going to become a 'menopause-friendly' employer. Speaker of the Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle said after he signed a Menopause Workplace Pledge yesterday, that he hopes to "break the taboo" around the menopause. Practical adjustments could be included in Westminster, such as well-ventilated rooms and fans, flexible working and breathable uniforms. But will a pledge in Parliament have any impact of the lives of women across the UK? Journalist and author of Cracking The Menopause, Mariella Frostrup and academic and author Dr Lara Owen join Emma to talk about changing the culture around menopause. The Australian actor Rebel Wilson has revealed she is in a relationship with a woman. Last Friday, she shared a picture with her new partner on Instagram saying she she had found her "Disney princess". But it was revealed the following day, the Sydney Morning Herald wrote they'd known about the relationship before it was public. Their celebrity reporter said he had given Wilson 1.5 days to provide comment for a story. That report sparked widespread criticism on social media, with LGBTQ+ campaigners saying it was unacceptable to put pressure on people to come out. The paper has since removed that gossip column and offered an apology. Emma is joined by the journalist and feminist campaigner Julie Bindel to discuss. Lea Ypi, professor of Political Theory at the London School of Economics, has written a prize-winning memoir, Free: Coming of Age at the End of History. Lea grew up in Albania and for the first eleven years of her life, it was one of the most isolated countries in the world, Europe's last Stalinist outpost. Then, in December 1990, the regime collapsed. Lea joins Emma to talk about her extraordinary coming-of-age story. A new report funded by the Home Office suggests that sexual abuse of a child by their brother or sister – sibling sexual abuse – may be the most common form of sexual abuse within the family. Many experts say it is not given enough attention and resources need to be set aside to support families dealing with this. Emma speaks to reporter Livvy Haydock and Stephen Barry, who is the Lead Clinician at 'Be Safe' Bristol, part of the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health partnership NHS Trust. Fancy taking your rage at the patriarchy out on a computer game? Well a developer in Plymouth has come up with The Glass Ceiling Games, where you fire slingshots back against catcalls, slice machetes at unsolicited nude photos, and point a ray-gun against mansplaining. So does it make a difference when women write computer games? Emma is joined by Hannah Wood creative director of The Glass Ceiling Games, and Karla Reyes, a game designer and Head of Business Development at Code Coven - an award-winning game development accelerator for underrepresented talent.

Relationships are the cornerstone of human health. Research shows that when we experience consistent - quality relationships with others, we live longer, feel better and become more resilient to stress. However, when we don't have access to these types of relationships and are unable to create new ones, the risks to our mental and physical health change astronomically. In fact, many studies have now confirmed that loss of social support and chronic loneliness are more disastrous to our health than smoking, obesity, or other measures of health risk. Putting these facts in the modern context of a global pandemic can be quite alarming. Never before have people experienced this level of isolation. Even as we come back together, many struggle to create new social connections due to the increased anxiety and decreased social skills created by this period of separation. So, what do we do? How do we help ourselves, our children, and our parents navigate social situations during periods of separation? Here to help us explore this timely conversation is NFCC's Clinical Director, Heather Timmis. About our Guest https://finnegancounseling.org/counselors/heather-timmis/ (Heather Timmis) is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor who works with families, couples and individuals ages 3 years and up. We have spoken about Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) on the podcast numerous times in the past so make sure you scroll down to find link to previous episodes. Kate is an expert on the topic, working with women on a daily basis to support them with their diagnosis and in this episode, we've shared a previous conversation we had with Professor Adam Balen discussing the latest PCOS guidelines. His special interests include all aspects of PCOS, Assisted Conception, Paediatric & Adolescent Gynaecology and Disorders of Sexual Development. In this conversation, you hear snippets of ahttps://www.thefertilitypodcast.com/pcosguidelines/ ( previous episode) whereAdam explains what the symptoms of PCOS are, including being over or under weight and how to maintain the condition with lifestyle changes. He also talks indepth about the use of Letrozole over Clomofin, or Clomid are most people know it. At the time of our chat, people were still needing to change their mindset regarding prescribing Letrozole, and Adam had written papers for the RCOG to support this further. Kate said she is still seeing a mix of what people are being prescribed and explained how in the UK, heath trust policies can dictate what drugs are prescribed. However, Kate advises if you are on Clomid and not responding after two rounds to go back and ask if you can go back and try Letrozole. We discuss the link between Letrozole and Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) as well as there being a lower risk of multiple pregnancy and also we discuss the frequency of scans people should expect when they are on these ovulation stimulation drugs We also highlighted the problem with home ovulation kits. When it comes to the common issues people are still coming up against Adam explains how women are still being told they won't get pregnant with ovulation issues or that they are overweight because you have PCOS and you can't do anything about it. Which isn't the case. Also the fact that a lot of women with PCOS end up having IVF when they don't need it which is why we want to ensure you know where to get more support. We also discuss howOvarian diathermy or Ovarian drilling which in vary rare cases is an operation used to stimulate ovulation. When it comes to top tips you can take away to manage your PCOS, Kate's top 3 tips are: Changing your diet to low refined carbs/sugar. Tracking your cycle tracking Become your own PCOS advocate Kate has written numerous blog post about PCOS. This one discusses https://yourfertilityjourney.com/pcos-cant-be-cured-but-it-absolutely-can-be-controlled/ (how whilst it can't be cured it can be controlled. ) You can also read about https://yourfertilityjourney.com/pcos-worst-enemy-heres-fight-back/ (fighting back against PCOS here ) and Kate also has a https://yourfertilityjourney.com/product/pcos-journal/ (brilliant journal you can use ) Have a listen to previous PCOS podcasts we have shared - this one with https://www.thefertilitypodcast.com/diva/ (PCOS Diva Amy Medling ) and this one https://www.thefertilitypodcast.com/kym/ (with Kym Campbell ) both amazing women who have overcome their PCOS and had successful pregnancies and now work to support women further with lifestyle changes. I know it has been a bit of a gap since my last podcast release. There is so much in the media right now around COVID 19 I wanted to wait and really think about how to be apart of this space right now. I wanted my voice to remain directed at my goals of sharing information about the Polyvagal Theory, SSP, related topics about wellness and neuroscience. All this information helps us better understand our own biobehavioural states, how to build self-awareness and vagal regulation. Being in a ventral vagal state resonates outward influencing the physiological state of others about you. Please enjoy my interview with a good friend and colleague, and probably the most experienced SSP practitioner there is, Doreen Hunt. Doreen is an Occupational Therapist and is the Co-Director of Children's Therapy at Woodinville located in the Seattle area. Renowned herbalist and nutritionist Donnie Yance talks about plant-based treatments with a focus on cancer management specifically. When you listen, you'll better understand How plants, by enduring stress during growth, develop compounds that help humans bodies handle their own stress. Why plant medicine can work together with traditional cancer treatments for more effective care, combatting issues such as drug resistance and nutritional deficits. What plant medicine can offer you in terms of tips to live longer through Mederi's five-stage system. Founder, President, Chairman, and Lead Clinician at the Mederi Center, Donnie Yance has been involved in plant medicine for decades. He founded the Natura brand to make high quality botanical medicine. At the Mederi Center, Yance works with cancer patients and their doctors from a quality of life and healthcare perspective under a specific order: first, they focus on the health of the patient with plant medicine to strengthen their healing capacity; then, they assess and alter accordingly the patient's micro environment and how it relates to the disease; and last, they targeting the cancer after identifying its molecular characteristics. Ultimately, the goal is to create a medicinal approach that does the most harm to the unhealthy cells with the least harm to the healthy. Yance uses his extensive knowledge of extracts and botanicals to inhibit the capacity of the cancer cells to build resistant pathways. The Mederi Center also focuses on quality of life, offering tips to live longer with better healthcare. (Meda:www.medainc.org) Every 62 minutes a person dies from an eating disorder, where eating disorders are the number one leading cause of mental health related deaths. Some possible factors, explored and discussed in today's show, include untrue and unhealthy beliefs, and pressures of unrealistic expectations with our relationships and judgments with our bodies, and with food. Additionally there may be inappropriate association of these beliefs and pressures to self worth and self identity, as we are told from social media, diet culture, and even our own narratives. So how can we make an impact to help prevent this in our own lives, our loved ones lives, and culturally? Through our need to connect, and need to support. Through education, conversation and relationships. Find our more, and join the conversation with Lucia and Michelle now on WellSeekers. How Pain Concern's Navigator Tool can ease pain appointments with your doctor. This edition has been funded by funded by the Health and Social Care Alliance and Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation. In 2015 Pain Concern released its report ‘Breaking barriers to self-management of chronic pain in primary care’, marking the end of the first part of its ‘Breaking Barriers’ project. Its aim was to highlight the commonly occurring barriers that patients faced during one-to-one appointments with healthcare professionals, and to advance the primary care management of chronic pain. Phase two of the project was to produce a ‘navigator tool’ to break down those barriers and prepare patients and GPs in order make the most out of their appointments. Phase two is now complete, and in this edition of Airing Pain, Paul Evans speaks to the researchers, patients, and healthcare professionals that allowed this project to happen. Reneé Blomkvist, Pain Concern’s researcher heading the project’s second phase, explains the established barrier in phase one, as well as the methodology used in preparing the navigator tool. Paul speaks to GP study participant Dr John Hardman, who has a particular interest in chronic pain, about his experience piloting the tool and how it allows both patients and GPs to focus their appointments. We then visit the University of Dundee to hear from the Scottish Government’s Lead Clinician on Chronic Pain and member of the research steering group, Professor Blair Smith, about his views on the role the navigator tool could play in helping people conceptualise and discuss their pain. At St. Triduana’s Medical Practice in Edinburgh, Lucy and her GP Dr Louise Bailey talk about their experiences in using the tool, and how the practice is trying to use supported self-management to further help its patients. Contributors: Dr John Hardman, GP, Navigator Tool study participant Professor Blair Smith, Scottish Government Lead Clinician for Chronic Pain, Professor of Population Heath Science, University of Dundee Dr Louise Bailey, GP, Navigator Tool study participant Renée Blomkvist, Pain Concern researcher for the Navigator Tool Lucy Murphy, Patient, Navigator Tool study participant. More information: The Navigator Tool is free to download from Pain Concern's website along with the study, the report, FAQs, and a wealth of resources from experts into managing long term pain. Pain experienced by the very young and very old and the similar issues arising when dealing with these very different types of patient. This edition has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All Programme in Northern Ireland. In this edition of Airing Pain, Paul Evans speaks to experts from Belfast and London about the similarities, differences and challenges in treating pain in infants and the elderly. Maria Fitzgerald, Professor of Developmental Neurobiology at University College London, mentions the outdated theory that babies do not experience pain and how this misconception has been disproved. She raises the issue of communication, perhaps the biggest problem with babies and the elderly (particularly those with dementia) - if they cannot communicate about their pain effectively, their pain often cannot be adequately addressed. She also discusses the scientific research she and her team are carrying out as well as the importance of treating pain at an early age. Paul speaks to Dr Pamela Bell, Chair of the Pain Alliance of Northern Ireland and former Lead Clinician for Pain Services at the Belfast Trust. She discusses how pain treatments work for infants and the consequences of not managing pain during the early stages of their development. Peter Passmore, Professor of Aging and Geriatric Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast, talks to us about the large number of dementia patients who are thought to live with pain and the need for medical staff and carers to be able to recognise changes in the patients’ behaviour and therefore become more able to address their pain.
