“Eternal Flame” is another song that came into my head from out of nowhere. It just started playing in my mind on its own. I remembered the song, but I had never heard of (or don't remember) an all-girl band called The Bangles. The group was popular in the 1980s. Susanna Hoff, their lead singer, wrote Eternal Flame with songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. The idea came from a Cyndi Lauper song Hoff admired, and from the eternal flame shrine near the Elvis Presley tomb in Graceland, where The Bangles saw it. “Eternal Flame” became one of The Bangles' biggest hits, reaching #1 in nine countries, including the USA in 1989. I still don't know why “Eternal Flame” barged unannounced into my head, but I'm glad it did. The song is BEAUTIFUL. Here's my cover. Chapters (00:00:08) - Close Your Eyes, Give Me Your Hand

Then it became a background song for the movie “Beaches.” After various song covers at home and abroad, in 1988, Bette Midler made “Wind Beneath My Wings” a #1 hit in the USA. You know you've made it in the music industry when "Weird Al" Yankovic requests to parody your song. "Weird Al" has spent more than four decades turning hit songs into time capsules that often outlive the originals. In a career that includes Grammy Awards, Platinum records, best-selling tours and the number one album decades. On this episode of the Really? no Really? Podcast, Jason and Peter sit down with Al and discuss his journey being a shy kid on the accordion to being the king of parody music. "Weird Al" has an extensive library of parodies that not only spans genres and decades, it's also a reflection on music history and culture ranging from Madonna to Michael Jackson to Nirvana to Coolio just to name a few. But not everyone has been on board for the "Weird Al" bump. Jimmy Page is a fan of Al's but wasn't crazy about a Led Zepplin polka. Al, Jason and Peter delve more into this. We'll also discuss how Al's career has taken some pretty wild and amazing turns from selling out venues like Carnegie Hall and Madison Square Garden to writing his own parody biopic and casting Daniel Radcliffe playing himself. A wild one today with Olivia Oravits as we bounce from unbelievable headlines to the future of human connection. We start with a story that sounds completely made up—but isn't—after Buddhist monks were busted in a massive marijuana smuggling operation. If you can't trust a monk, who can you trust? Then we pivot into a deep (and surprisingly fun) dive into artificial intelligence. Olivia and I both created AI-generated songs—and honestly…they're pretty good. So what does that mean for musicians, creativity, and the future of entertainment? We also explore the rise of AI relationships. Are people really replacing human connection with machines—and where does that lead? At what point do you just skip it all and get a cat?

We discuss the rollout, the music, the history, and whether this album holds a candle to modern pop benchmarks like Future Nostalgia before going head to head with Teenage Dream in the bigger picture of pop longevity. Which album is the Teenage Dream of the 2020s? It all ends next Thursday with Part 3.

Join Sean Martin, executive producer and guitarist for The Quarantined, as he shares his incredible journey of using music as therapy for PTSD and mental health recovery. In this powerful conversation, Sean opens up about his combat experiences, temporary psychotic breakdown in 2012, and how he discovered that vocal breathing exercises from music school were identical to the anxiety management techniques taught in veteran clinics. Learn about Sean's unique approach to song writing through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), where he transforms "hot thoughts" - the core issues identified during therapy - into powerful lyrics. Discover how his red Fender Show master guitar, which accompanied him to Iraq, plays a distinct role in creating layered rhythms versus lead tones in his music. Sean dives deep into the science behind music's healing properties, explaining how managing brain chemicals like adrenaline, serotonin, dopamine, and cortisol through creative expression helped him overcome trauma. He shares practical CBT techniques for identifying and processing traumatic thoughts, turning them into songs like "Aversion to Normality" and "Nemesis Friend of Mind." The discussion covers the challenges of the music industry, dealing with rejection, and maintaining mental health as an artist. Sean offers valuable insights on: Using music to process the five stages of grief The therapeutic value of long-form storytelling in songs Protecting your mental health from online criticism Finding gratitude and perspective during difficult times Creating boundaries while pursuing artistic passion Whether you're a musician, veteran, or someone interested in mental health and creative expression, this interview offers profound insights into the transformative power of music and the practical applications of therapy techniques in everyday life. We'd love to hear from you! Please send us a Text Message! One day, not so long ago, I was simply walking across my living room, when a thought hit me and stuck in my head that there was a wealthy elderly man sitting in his den playing a video board game that he had invented. The board game was somewhat magical and most complex. I stopped in my tracks and thought deeper. I realized that he was a God like figure and the board game was us, here on Planet Earth. We were the result of his invention. That was about it. I smiled and moved on across the room. But the notion stuck with me. I laughed at the thought and wrote it down on a slip of paper: Living In My Video Game.Perhaps several years later, here is the result of that pause in life.Theater of the Imagination is presented by Watchfire Music https://watchfiremusic.com/
The Billboard Hot 100 has been ranking the week's most popular music since 1958. The first song to top the chart was Ricky Nelson's Poor Little Fool. The most recent song to do so is Taylor Swift's The Fate of Ophelia. A lot has changed in the music industry between those two songs, not only in the types of songs that top the charts, but also in how they're promoted and how they're determined. A new book explores the statistics behind the Hot 100, and it's the focus of this episode of Stats + Stories with guest Chris Dalla Riva. Chris Dalla Riva is an analyst for the music streaming service Audiomack by day while spending his nights writing and recording music and writing about music for his newsletter Can't Get Much Higher.

Popular music history collides with data analytics, charts, and numbers in this insightful and surprising look at the greatest hits and musicians, fads, forgotten artists, and much more. Data analyst and musician Chris Dalla Riva reframes everything you thought you knew about music. Did you know that hit songs in the late 1950s were regularly about gruesome death? That a US vice president wrote a number one hit? That while TikTok has spawned countless hits, it's made artists more anonymous than ever before? That pop songs have shaped race relations in the United States? That the key change died around 2003? And that's just the beginning. Coupling hard data with engaging anecdotes, Uncharted Territory: What Numbers Tell Us about the Biggest Hit Songs and Ourselves (Bloomsbury, 2025) is both a takedown and celebration of popular music and provides new ways to think about your favorite songs, genres, and artists from the last 6 decades using unexpected statistics and playful visualizations. This entertaining history is filled with the most popular musicians of all time from The Beatles and The Bee Gees to Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, and beyond. Whether you danced the twist or the dougie at your senior prom, you're sure to never listen to music again in the same way. Chris Dalla Riva lives at the intersection of music and data. Playing in bands and recording music since his teenage years, Dalla Riva is currently a Senior Product Manager at Audiomack where he focuses on data analytics and personalization. Gregory McNiff is a Managing Director in the New York office of the Blueshirt Group, an IR firm focused on technology. Greg holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, an M. Lane McCray of La Bouche joins Kelly Alexander to share how the hit dance duo of himself and Melanie Thornton came to be back in the 90's. Lane also shares some rarely heard before stories about how their amazingly successful song “Be My Lover” was created and the meaning behind it. He also shares what it was like to lose Melanie after she passed away in a plane crash and why he had to step away from music for several years to regroup before coming back to continue her legacy through La Bouche.
