In this special episode, Jeongmin hosts professors Erik Mobrand and Cho Hee-kyung for a quick-fire Korea Pro briefing analyzing the historic Constitutional Court ruling on Friday that removed President Yoon Suk-yeol from office — making him the second South Korean president impeached and removed by the court. Jeongmin kicks off with a comprehensive 10-minute summary of the Constitutional Court's ruling, detailing how the justices unanimously voted to uphold Yoon's impeachment and explaining the language they used in their decisive verdict.  Jeongmin summarizes the court's extensive deliberation process, and outlines how the justices structured their evaluation around five specific grounds for impeachment. She explains how the court comprehensively rejected almost all of Yoon's defenses, including his claim that the martial law was merely a “warning” or a “plea” with no legal basis in the constitution. Professor Cho explains the reasons behind the court's unanimous ruling and the political context behind the decision's delay. She discusses how the timing may have been influenced by the appellate court's March decision to acquit main opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung of his election law violation conviction, along with how the justices evaluated contested witness testimony and hearsay evidence differently than in a criminal proceeding. Professor Mobrand examines the political implications of Yoon's removal, arguing that the democratic resilience shown by ordinary citizens created a powerful check on executive overreach. He challenges the framing of South Korea's society as simply “polarized,” suggesting that specific politicians have deliberately exacerbated divisions rather than this reflecting deep societal rifts. The panel explores why the military largely refused to fully implement Yoon's martial law orders, institutional weaknesses exposed by this constitutional crisis, and what reforms are most urgently needed — including reducing concentrated power in the presidential office and prosecutorial authority. Erik Mobrand is a professor of Korean Studies at Seoul National University's Graduate School of International Studies, an expert on political transformation in Korea with a focus on the interplay of informal power and formal institutions. Cho Hee-kyung is a professor at Hongik University's College of Law whose research spans international economic law, intellectual property, human rights and media law. Editor's Note: During the discussion, Professor Cho referred to the appellate Seoul High Court that handed down the verdict on opposition leader Lee Jae-myung on March 26 erroneously as the Supreme Court. This clarification has been noted for accuracy. About the podcast: The Korea Pro Podcast is a weekly 15-minute conversation hosted by Editorial Director Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) and Editor John Lee (@koreanforeigner), diving deep into the most pressing stories shaping South Korea — and dissecting the most complicated ones for professionals monitoring ROK politics, diplomacy, culture, society and technology. The Republic of Korea is one of the twentieth century's economic miracles. Poor at the time it split from its neighbour to the north, it now has the fastest internet on the planet and is a world-leading exporter of electronics, cars and culture. Much of what is best in the world can be found in Korea but it faces many of its hardest challenges too. Sky-high property prices, the world's fastest-ageing population, a highly pressurised and competitive society, and as they face the difficult prospect of working and raising a family, 65 percent of Korean women are choosing not to have children. Along with all this, is the worry about the country that shares the Korean Peninsula, Kim Jong Un's nuclear-armed North Korea. Jonny Dymond presents a panel of Korean politicians and experts as they debate questions from the public across the country. This episode is all about leaving Korea and transitioning back to one's adoptive country, and we found the perfect guests to talk about it. Kim Stoker first returned to live in Korea in 1995. She spent almost 20 years of her adult life there and has been based in the US since 2017. She was a leading activist in ASK (Adoptee Solidarity Korea) and continues to be an advocate for adoptee rights in South Korea. Eunha Lovell returned to Korea in 2007 after meeting birth family. While living in Korea, she has spent time learning Korean, working with single mothers and adoptees through GOA'L and Koroot, and attended Hongik University for graduate school. She has a YouTube channel called "The Returnees" that focuses on video portraits of Korean adoptees living in their motherland and she also practices Korean Traditional Painting. To learn more about Eunha, visit: www.eunhalovell.com We threw all kinds of big, unruly questions at Stoker and Eunha, and they were both so candid and generous in their replies. This is a free-flowing, meandering, deeply reflective conversation that touches on reverse culture shock, missing Korea during the pandemic, maintaining connections with Korean family, shifting identities, micro-aggressions experienced by adoptees within the Asian American community, and advice for adoptees planning to leave Korea. So many pearls of wisdom here! We also end with a random question segment in which we guess Stoker's astrological sign.

Judy and Linda crave a little bit more from episodes 11-12 of "Because This Is My First Life" (이번 생은 처음이라), a TVN Korean drama starring Jung SoMin and Lee MinKi. There has to be more of a build-up to Sehee's (Lee MinKi) sudden (?) romantic interest in Jiho (Jung SoMin). Surely, he doesn't get a sudden inspiration from making kimchi by the seaside? Judy is excited that Sooji (Esom) finally stands up to her disgusting work colleagues. Also, what's up with the strangely erotic introduction to Sehee's ex-wife (Lee ChungAh)?  Digressions: 1:15 - Judy watched episode 1 of TVN's "Black" starring Go Ara and Song SeungHun. 5:05 - Linda has been watching "Once Upon A Time". Please save her. 5:58 - Judy recommends "Miss Fisher's Mysteries". 16:59 - Fandom as an "older person" 20:04 - Why some Korean websites don't seem to work properly   Some Korean terms: 옥탑방: [ok-tap-bang] rooftop apartment. 성질: [seong-jil] temper. 남편: [nam-pyeon] husband. 남: [nam] stranger; anyone who's not a family member. 편: [pyeon] side. 외도: [weh-do] affair. 홍대: [hong-deh] short form for 홍익대학교 [hong-ik-deh-hak-gyo], HongIk University.   Audio Credits: BTS – "I Need U" BTS – "Fire"   Happy New Year!
