Post Show: Next week: The Uncle Ruckus Reality Show Need to see where we are on social media and such?  Come find us!  https://www.theboondockspod.com/links Trivia: There are widespread rumors that this show and a second episode (“The Uncle Ruckus Reality Show”) have been banned from airing in the U.S. due to threatened litigation from BET. However, a Cartoon Network representative stated that BET had not contacted Cartoon Network regarding the episodes. This, however, does not negate the possibility that Viacom, BET's parent company, may have threatened litigation against Sony. Sony Pictures Television, which produces the series, has not issued a statement on the matter. The episodes are said to specifically attack Reggie Hudlin, BET's President of Entertainment, and Debra L. Lee, President and Chief Executive Officer of BET Holdings (parent company of BET.) Lee is portrayed as Deborah Leevil, a parody of the character Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies, and Hudlin is portrayed as Wedgie Rudlin, a “culturally insensitive buffoon coasting on his Ivy League education.”Ironically, Hudlin had retained an executive producer credit on The Boondocks, though this is only a contractual obligation; Hudlin has not had any involvement with the show since the first pilot was rejected by Fox. During the episode, the character Deborah Leevil relates the mission of BET within The Boondocks universe, stating:“Our leader Bob Johnson had a dream, a dream that would accomplish what hundreds of years of slavery, Jim Crow and malt liquor could not accomplish – the destruction of black people.” On the DVD release of the second season, McGruder states “I was looking for changes and improvements, and I didn't see any.” referring to BET's programming. He decided to show his frustration using satire in The Boondocks, reasoning “I didn't see them. So I said, OK, it's fair game.” Debra Leevil is a mixed caricature of Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movie trilogy, along with Cruella de Vil of the One Hundred and One Dalmatians fame. : Elements including music, impulsive slaying of junior executives, and layout of the board room are all reminiscent of the Austin Powers movies, while Leevil's looks strongly mirror the latter character. There are several American culture references in this episode. The documentary Rollo Goodlove makes called “BET: The High Cost of Low Standards” is a parody on the title of an anti-Wal-mart documentary entitled “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price”. It also references facts found in that documentary. Rollo Goodlove dances to Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, though not that well and doesn't seem to know all the words. The song that Rollo Goodlove sings during his protest is “Go-Go Gadget Gospel” by Gnarls Barkley. At one point during the episode, a boy gets up from his couch and says “Man fuck BET! I'm gonna read a book!”. This is a reference to the D'Mite satire song titled “Read a Book” which, ironically, gained its popularity by becoming an animated music video on BET. At the end of the show, Huey asks Granddad for advice and says, “What do you do when you can't do nothing, but there's nothing you can do?” Granddad responds by saying, “You do what you can,” which is the same advice Martin Luther King, Jr. gives Huey at the end of Return of the King.  Show Music: Intro:  #Makeachange by K.I.R.K. is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 License. Marshall is a new film from Reginald Hudlin that pinpoints in on a particular case that Thurgood Marshall was a part of that wasn't his famous Brown vs. Board of Education one. Its a very smart choice by Hudlin to do this because this movie highlights why Thurgood was as good as he was. Solid cast and great acting all around. There were a couple of spots that was shaky but overall a great movie. 3BG rating: 4 out of 5

%CODECCBP% If you're looking for the essential marvel comics to read for Black Panther then look no further. With his first solo movie just over a month away, its time to revisit our Character Corner episode that goes through the history of the first black super hero in mainstream comics. T'Challa made his live action debut in Captain America: Civil War but the importance and interest in the character goes back much further.  In this episode, we break down what exactly Wakanda is and how progressive the writing for both Wakanda & T'Challa was even back in the 60's. Black Panther was given the spotlight in the Jungle Action series where he even took on and fought the KKK. The last 90's saw a new revival for T'Challa when Christopher Priest took over for Black Panther Volume 3. Looking back, this run is very problematic (it's a bit hotepy and the depiction of women/little girls is bad), but it represented a huge shift in how Black Panther & Wakanda were represented. This is the run that hooked a lot of people on the character of T'Challa and the concept of Wakanda. For all it's issues, Priest did a great job of elevating T'Challa to basically being Marvel's Batman while expanding on what Wakanda really was. As problematic as the depiction is, credit also has to be given to Priest for introducing the concept of the Dora Milaje.  Priest's run redefined Black Panther and subsequent writers just built on that. Reginald Hudlin's run on Black Panther has moments that fall flat but also provide some significant changes to the character. For good or bad, Hudlin retcons the history of T'Challa and the X-Men Storm so that Ororo is the "one true love" of T'Challa. Personally the Storm/T'Challa marriage was poorly thought out, unnecessary and executed. But Hudlin also introduces us to Shuri, T'Challa's sister and eventual successor as ruler of Wakanda. Our episode goes into further details with each of these series and more. We go into  T'Challa's relationship with the other rulers in the Marvel Universe: Namor, Black Bolt and Doctor Doom. The rivalry between Doctor Doom & T'Challa takes the character to the next level.  Like I said, we cover a lot. So give it a listen. Reginald Hudlin is unique in the entertainment business because of his success as a writer, producer, director and executive. To quote cultural critic Jimi Israel, “Hudlin is a modern-day Gordon Parks, a true monster in the game who totally re-did the blueprint: what some people used to call a renaissance man. I dig him because he made me think outside of the box. Hudlin writes and directs movies, pens a comic book, and he was running BET. Hudlin is a pioneer of the modern black film movement, creating movies like HOUSE PARTY, BOOMERANG and BEBE’S KIDS, which are some of the most profitable and influential films of his generation. He is the executive producer and writer of the upcoming BLACK PANTHER animated series starring Djimon Hounsou, and was executive producer of THE BOONDOCKS. Hudlin also directed the pilot of the hit series EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS and was a producer and director of THE BERNIE MAC SHOW. Hudlin is currently a producer on writer/director Quinton Tarantino’s upcoming feature film DJANGO UNCHAINED, starring Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Costner.
