#265: Beckham, Gaffa Banana, Silent Walking It's been a full on week, and we're here to give you a little reprieve if you need it. Fat Bear Week is here to help us, we have a winner, she is amazing, and we celebrate Grazer. Meanwhile Bang Fam are rallying around the Peregrine Falcons after their fortunes took a turn. The conceptual art piece “Comedian” (a banana gaffa taped to a wall) is coming to Melbourne for the NGV's Triennial, so it's time for Myf's critical art eye. And for Zan to wonder who's hungry. 90's sitcoms are back, but why? Frasier is recreating the nostalgia to the letter, while Jerry Seinfeld has been hinting of some sort of return. We explain all. Looking back seems to be the way we're moving forward across culture in general, with none doing it better or bigger this week than the Beckham docu-series on Netflix. We dig into this epic story of Posh and Becks, football and fantasy, and a heavy dose of bad new millenium fashion. And a great read on how the internet isn't fun anymore has crystallized a lot, and made us wistful for the world wide web. Could switching it all off and going silent walking be the answer? Myf is banging on about the second series of Billie Piper's brilliant series I Hate Suzie, while Zan is reading Kazuo Ishiguro's classic The Remains of the Day. And did you know Bang On is now on YouTube? You can now SEE us be silly duffa's. Check it out via the link below. Renowned for tackling big themes on stage, Lucy Prebble made her name as a playwright in her mid-twenties when she wrote the hugely successful Enron. The play, which premiered in 2009 and explored the collapse of the American energy corporation eight years earlier, transferred to the West End and also played on Broadway. In 2019 she premiered A Very Expensive Poison which dramatized the assassination in London of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko. Lucy Prebble has also written for television, she devised and wrote the black comedy series I Hate Suzie with its star Billie Piper. She was also one of the writers of the Emmy, Golden Globes and BAFTA winning Succession, about the ageing media mogul deciding if and how to hand control of his corporate empire to his children. In conversation with John Wilson, Lucy recalls how an early job as an assistant to Nicholas Hytner in his first year as Director of the National Theatre helped her to begin her career as a writer. She reveals how Billy Bragg's song Waiting For The Great Leap Forwards is a continued inspiration in her work as a playwright and the influence that Bob Fosse's 1979 film All That Jazz had on her TV series I Hate Suzie. She also discusses being part of the team that wrote the hit TV series Succession and what effect the experience has had on her and her work. Producer: Edwina Pitman
Stephen Sackur speaks to the leading British playwright and screenwriter Lucy Prebble. Her credits include Enron and The Effect in the theatre, Succession and I Hate Suzie on television. In an era of polarising culture wars and with perceived threats from A.I., are writers feeling a deep sense of unease?

Film and TV correspondent Tamar Munch joins Kathryn to look at a new series on TVNZ+ which stars David Tennant as Alexander Litvinenko, the former Russian spy and Kremlin critic who was poisoned by polonium; I Hate Suzie's second season is streaming on Neon and amid the controversy about it...is Harry&Meghan's documentary series (Netflix) any good?
I am BEYOND EXCITED that we are joined by my OG Idol, Billie Piper, who made the first album I ever bought - fun fact! Believe it or not, Billie first burst into our lives 25 years ago - so this is technically the Silver Jubilee of Queen Billie, which should be a national holiday, right? As a 15 year old popstar, Billie became the youngest person ever to go straight to number one with the eternal bop, Because We Want To before going on to land two more number one singles with Girlfriend and Day & Night. How her hit, Honey 2 The Bee wasn't ever a number one is still an injustice that haunts me until this day. But here we are… Billie then turned to acting with the comeback of Doctor Who starring as the Doctor's assistant, Rose Tyler opposite Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant and The Secret Diary of A Call Girl. Billie even continued to set records with her new career path by winning all six of the possible best stage actress awards, including an Olivier award, for her stage debut in Yerma. Now Billie is back with the second season of the BAFTA nominated TV show, I Hate Suzie, which she co-created with Succession writer, Lucy Prebble. If you haven't watched the first season of the show, it follows the former child star, Suzie Pickles as her life implodes when private images of her leak online. And let me tell you RIGHT NOW, the second season is just as good as the first with more twists and turns for our anti-hero, Suzie. I Hate Suzie Too is available on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW from 20 December.Today Billie joins us to talk about being a horny dancer (same here!) - tis the season, after all - and how exploring anxiety and mental health on I Hate Suzie has impacted her own well being. Billie also opens up about how seeing her 14 year old son grow up has made her reflect further on her own teenage stardom and the advice she wishes she could go back and give her popstar self. She also shares some great words about balance and pressure which I think we all need to hear and will relate to, and about finding a new level of confidence turning 40 this year. Billie Piper is still THE coolest person on the planet in my mind, so I hope you love this chat just as much as me as it really shows just how this icon has managed to stay relevant for a quarter of a century across so many disciplines. If you have missed any of the episodes of Reign Season six go check them out now - we've been joined by some truly inspiring people from Chloe Grace Moretz to Lena Dunham. I hope you keep on listening and finding the power to Reign in your own lives. If you love this episode, please get in touch (follow me across social media @joshsmithhosts), I love hearing from you. This week we are revisiting actress and director Billie Piper and Bexy Cameron who was born into a cult called the Children of God.Billie Piper has been famous since she was 14, first a popstar then an award winning actress often playing complicated female characters, starring in Doctor Who, Secret Diary of A Call Girl, Collateral, I Hate Suzie, Yerma (for which she won 6 best actress awards) and, in 2021, Rare Beasts, which she wrote and directed. On Changes, Billie opened up about her life, relationships and early fame and the impact of that on her, including having to answer inappropriate questions in high profile interviews. Bexy Cameron, was born into one of the world's most notorious cults called the Children of God which her parents became the leaders of. She was 9 years old when she experienced her first exorcism. Children in the cult were raised to believe that sex was love and there were no boundaries. Bexy escaped and is now leading a happy life and is able to speak about what happened to her having written a book about her experience called 'Cult Following: My Escape and Return to the Children of God'. Here we revisit the beginning of her story before she escaped. This week my guest is Sheena Patel, an assistant director for Film and TV. Her credits as a 1st AD include Casualty and Dominic Savage's upcoming series I Am Ruth. She has also 3rd Assistant Directed on feature films such as Boxing Day and Pirates, as well as series like I Hate Suzie and Apple Tree House, and she is represented by Sara Putt Associates. Sheena is also an author and a co-founding member of the poetry collective 4 Brown Girls Who Write and part of the reason I invited her on for this season is that she has just published her debut novel, I'm A Fan, of which many people are. It's getting rave reviews and Sheena was listed in The Observer's 10 Best Debut Novelists of 2022. I'm A Fan is published by Rough Trade Books and uses the voice of a single speaker to explore an unfaithful relationship and the power struggle within that, as well as how this connects with the wider world and our cultural obsession with status. Desiree Akhavan has called it hilarious, heartbreaking and sickening and you can get a copy via the Rough Trade website. When I was preparing to talk to Sheena I figured that the conversation would be divided into two parts, but of course when someone's passions co-exist in the way they do with Sheena, some overlap is to be expected and we sort of oscillate between the two and find some surprising comparisons between being an assistant director and being a writer or performer. We talk about perseverance and how Sheena came to the television industry relatively late, how she establishes a sense of authority, collaboration and harmony on the floor and bluffing your way through imposter syndrome, as well as how and when she wrote her novel, what the process of finishing it and releasing it has been like and why she just wrote wherever her brain went. It was a really fun and also chill chat. I think Sheena really embodies that sense of harmony and calm that maybe she presents when she's AD'ing and yeah I came away from it thinking what a lovely way to have spent an hour of my Saturday morning. I think we're lucky to have someone like Sheena in our film and TV industry and likewise, lucky to have her as a powerful and critical voice in and of our culture, so I feel very privileged to have had her on the podcast. This is episode 112 of Best Girl Grip.

Siobhán Harper-Ryan is a Hair & Make-Up Designer who started out as an apprentice in fashion design & millinery in London's Camden Lock, before exploring the world of theatre in the 90s where she found a place within London's Off West-End and the Fringe. In 1999 Siobhán changed course and trained in make-up artistry and has since enjoyed a varied & colourful career, working on a range of TV and film projects. Recently she worked on Sky Atlantic's series I Hate Suzie, as well as Joanna Hogg's films The Souvenir and The Souvenir Part II. The latter for which she just earned a BIFA nomination. She also worked on Joanna's next film The Eternal Daughter, and Peter Strickland's upcoming film Flux Gourmet. This is my first time chatting to a make-up designer on Best Girl Grip, so as well as chatting about Siobhán's route into make-up artistry, we also go back to basics, discussing how she decides what make-up to use, what goes into creating onscreen looks, particularly for subtle period dramas like The Souvenir and how she establishes a rapport with the actors. We also talk about neurodivergence in the film industry, building confidence and taking time for yourself on the hubbub of a film set. I hope you enjoy listening to our chat. Make sure to catch The Souvenir Part II when it's released in cinemas on 21st January next year. This is episode 96 of Best Girl Grip.

Welcome back to Season 3 of The Cheer Up Luv Podcast! Who better to kick start the season, than the amazing intimacy coordinator Ita O'Brien, known for her groundbreaking roles directing scenes in Sex Education, Normal People, I Hate Suzie, I May Destroy You and It's A Sin. As well as directing sexual content, Ita founded the organisation ‘Intimacy on Set', which provides services to TV, film, & theatre like training, consultancy, advocacy when dealing with intimacy and nudity. In this Ep we discuss why there haven't been dedicated roles for directing sex until now, intimacy on set in a post #MeToo era, and the long overdue portrayal of female pleasure in film and TV. TW: We will be discussing an experience of sexual harassment at the end of the show.
Ho, ho, ho Nerds! We've been binging some TV - The Undoing, Mando, I Hate Suzie, Euphoria, loads more; bangin' on the bird front, and doing our best to stay sane. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and we'll see ya in 2021 (rooster willing). Recorded via Skype = Palm Springs + Southern OR on 12.21.20
After 15 seasons on two networks, Supernatural has finally hunted its last monster, and our French friend Caroline Lefloch is joining us to bury the series finale in an unmarked, shallow grave. Around The Dial takes us through I Hate Suzie, Peacock's sequel to Saved By The Bell, Agatha Christie's Poirot, and new looks at the D.B. Cooper case in both History's Greatest Mysteries and HBO's The Mystery Of D.B. Cooper. Kimberly challenges us to Fleabag-enize a show by adding a hot clergy person to it; then it's on to Guy's submission of the Perfect Strangers episode "Just Desserts" for induction into The Canon. Finally, after crowning the week's Winner and Loser, we end on a Game Time with a little Gallic flair. Load up the vintage Impala and join us! GUESTS

It's the end of an era as Keeping Up With The Kardashians calls time. We reflect back on the empire (and wealth) this family has built, and why now is the right time to finish. An op-ed penned by robot AI has the human world in a tizz, meanwhile a phenomenon around bookstores and toilets has us oversharing. And everyone is talking about Billie Piper's incredible performance in I Hate Suzie. We've been to the pictures for the first time together in 2 years! We chat about our socially-distanced trip to the cinema (if you want to know more – check out our Tenet Spoiler Special, but only if you've seen Tenet!!). And we look ahead to some of the new films coming out over the next few months. What will tempt you to head back to the flicks? We also return to Lovecraft Country (30:34) for a discussion about episode 2. Was it as good as the opener? We watched the first two episodes of Cobra Kai (12:11), now showing on Netflix. Elaine loved this great big dollop of nostalgia, but will Mark agree? And finally we review I Hate Suzie (21:02), Billie Piper's dark comedy taking a peek behind the curtain at hacking, celebrity, and teenage fame – available now on Sky Atlantic. It's the first week of our new podcasting format, so in this episode we'll just be reviewing what we've been watching. But fear not! If you're a fan of our Date Night feature, we'll be staying in this Bank Holiday and watching some films so watch out for a random Date Night episode to drop into your podcatchers shortly… Follow us: Twitter - Instagram - Facebook Leave us a review on Apple Podcasts
