For Episode 105, Radical Research follows the lead of musical polyglot and overachiever, Steven Wilson. Inspired by Wilson's recently-curated, Intrigue: Progressive Sounds in UK Alternative Music 1979-1989, this episode traces out the music found on the first disc of this four-volume edition, digging into such varied artists as Public Image Ltd., John Foxx, In Camera, and This Heat. This constitutes the first in a four-part series around Wilson's collection, which we will revisit occasionally throughout 2024. Should you have any interest in the rich mosaic of the late 1970s/early 1980s UK underground, tune in, turn on, and experiment out. Note I: As mentioned late in the episode, here is further reading on the Durutti Column's sandpaper packaging of their Return of the Durutti Column album: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Return_of_the_Durutti_Column Note II: Please consider donating if you listen to Radical Research often: https://www.paypal.me/rrpodcast We also have a webstore where you can find shirts, CDs, and books, many of them recently restocked: http://radicalresearch.org/shop/ Music cited in order of appearance: intro: Peter Hammill, “Nobody's Business” (Nadir's Big Chance, 1975) [all snippets in this episode are taken from the Intrigue compilation; the following indicates where the songs initially appeared] Wire, “I Should Have Known Better” (154, 1979) Bill Nelson's Red Noise, “A Better Home in the Phantom Zone” (Sound on Sound, 1979) Magazine, “Back to Nature” (Secondhand Daylight, 1979) XTC, “Complicated Game” (Drums and Wires, 1979) Public Image Ltd, “Careering” (Metal Box, 1979) The Stranglers, “The Raven” (The Raven, 1979) Punishment of Luxury, “Puppet Life” (Puppet Life 7”, 1979) Ultravox, “Astradyne” (Vienna, 1980) Gang of Four, “Contract” (Entertainment!, 1979) Simple Minds, “I Travel” (Empires and Dance, 1980) The Durutti Column, “Sketch for Summer” (The Return of the Durutti Column, 1980) This Heat, “Health and Efficiency” (Health and Efficiency [EP], 1980) John Foxx, “Burning Car” (Burning Car 7”, 1980) Robert Fripp and the League of Gentlemen, “Cognitive Dissonance” (The League of Gentlemen, 1981) In Camera, “The Fatal Day” (Fin [EP], 1982) Radical Research is a conversation about the inner- and outer-reaches of rock and metal music. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.
This week's guest is Vicki Brown, the Senior Executive of Sales & Distribution at the BFI. Before the BFI she was at Together Films where she was Head of Acquisitions, Sales and Distribution, a company that is one of the leaders in social impact entertainment. She was responsible for setting up the international sales department and oversaw the acquisition of In Camera the first feature from director Naqqash Khalid. Prior to her arrival at Together Films, Vicki was the Director of International Sales at Altitude. At Altitude, she represented such diverse and critically acclaimed titles such as Rocks (by Sarah Gavron), Ali & Ava (by Clio Barnard), The Princess (by Ed Perkins), Calm With Horses (by Nick Rowland) and Diego Maradona (by Asif Kapadia). Vicki has also previously worked at Focus Features International where she handled sales on numerous titles including Cloud Atlas and Moonrise Kingdom. In addition, she seeks to champion under-represented voices in the film industry. Vicki is the co-founder (alongside former podcast guest Chi Thai) of MilkTea Films, an organisation which looks to shine a spotlight on East and Southeast Asian talent through screenings and events with a goal to building inclusion, communities and audiences. MilkTea was announced as a Film London Lodestar in 2023 and in 2022 and 2023, was nominated for a Big Screen Award. All of which to say, Vicki is incredibly hardworking and a wonderful person to have in this industry, and therefore on this podcast. We talk about how she unearthed sales as the aspect of the film industry that she could be good at, what sales agents actually do, how she copes with the intensity of festivals and markets, working at Altitude when they were just starting out, how she knows when it's time for a change, founding MilkTea and why that brings her joy, and what better East and Southeast Asian representation in cinema could look like. Our guest of this week’s episode of the podcast is traveler, photographer, master equipment reviewer, food and coffee lover, and just super nice guy, Gordon Laing of Cameralabs fame. The number one reason why we wanted Gordon on the show is to talk about his latest book, In Camera. The book was released some time ago, but we only had it in our hands for a few days, as it took a really long time to reach us. First of all, let’s just say that we’re really loving it, since it’s a collection of very fine images, each one accompanied by the details of how Gordon made the shot, camera settings and a precious tip.The book is not just one hundred beautiful photos put together, but also an illustration of Gordon’s approach to photography, which is hinted at by the title, “In Camera”, and is all about the art of JPEG photography with no post-processing.Aside from the book, we chatted about Gordon’s habits as a traveler, recent trends in camera design, the opportunity of taking “postcard” shots, and much more. All these topics, together with Gordon’s talkative spirit, made for an episode that is a bit longer than usual, but it was so much fun for us to record it and we are sure you will love listening to it.Duration 56m 08s.Music for this episode: “Zanzibar” Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Links* In Camera* Cameralabs* Instagram* Twitter* Mysteries of Mexico’s Copper Canyon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

DeMille (1881 – 1959), the famous Hollywood film director and producer, is the subject of many legends. According to one famous story, DeMille once directed a film that required a huge, expensive battle scene. Filming on location in a California valley, the director set up multiple cameras to capture the action from every angle. It was a sequence that could only be done once. When DeMille yelled “Action!,” thousands of extras playing soldiers stormed across the field, firing their guns. Riders on horseback galloped over the hills. Cannons fired, pyrotechnic explosives were blown up, and battle towers loaded with soldiers came toppling down. The whole sequence went off perfectly. At the end of the scene, DeMille yelled “Cut!” He was then informed, to his horror, that three of the four cameras recording the battle sequence had failed. In Camera #1, the film had broken. Camera #2 had missed shooting the sequence when a dirt clod was kicked into the lens by a horse’s hoof. Camera #3 had been destroyed when a battle tower had fallen on it. DeMille was at his wit’s end when he suddenly remembered that he still had Camera #4, which he had placed along with a cameraman on a nearby hill to get a long shot of the battle sequence. DeMille grabbed his megaphone and called up to the cameraman, “Did you get all that?” The cameraman on the hill waved and shouted back, “Ready when you are, C.B.!”. from https://paulatohlinecalhoun1951.wordpress.com/2011/10/15/ready-when-you-are-c-b/
