Tune in and buckle up - this will be a ride! Meet Brian Mayne - the creator of the Goal Mapping, Life Mapping, and Self Mapping personal development systems, and the Seven Magic Keys development program for children. Brian Mayne's Goal Mapping, a world-leading achievement system, is a unique whole-brain approach to setting goals that powerfully helps people achieve their desires. When Brian's family business failed during the UK recession of the late 1980s, he lost what seemed like everything: his income, his home, and his marriage. He was 29 years old, £1 million in debt, and still relatively unable to read or write. It was at this seemingly low point that Brian discovered the keys to success: that you can change your life by changing your thoughts and feelings about it. Using simple but powerful techniques, Brian learned to hold positive thoughts by setting goals, and through those goals, he gradually transformed both himself and his life. Brian is now an international speaker on human potential and has empowered hundreds of thousands of people with his unique systems for success. As well as helping individuals to achieve their aims, Brian helps leading organisations such as Siemens, Microsoft and BT. He has also worked with renowned speakers such as Brendon Buchard, Anthony Robbins, Christopher Howard and T Harv Ecker. Get inspired, motivated and truly energized, and, most importantly, set your goals and take bold action! With Brian's tips, you are bound to succeed! Tune in!

For many people, franchising is a dream that they often feel is out of reach. They think that getting everything set up from an administration point of view seems far too challenging to get it right. With Brian’s system, we get to see how his team helps businesses to franchise, from signing up to the program to helping them operate. Guest’s Background: Brian Keen is the founder of Franchise Simply. He has been managing his own businesses for over 40 years, specializing in the franchise sector for the last 30 years. This experience tells him franchising offers one of the most exciting business models around for anyone looking to create real wealth and financial independence for themselves. Brian trained as a Quantity Surveyor in England and then emigrated to Malawi in Central Africa where he opened businesses in building, property development and transport. Brian built ‘Franchise Simply’ with the aim of showing business owners how to transform a family-sized firm into a multi-million dollar asset through a unique four-step system, saving tens of thousands of dollars in consultancy fees in the process. He’s passionate about helping people become financially secure and independently wealthy through business, wherever they are, whatever their background. That’s why Brian founded and became Chairman of MicroLoan Foundation Australia (MLFA), a charity which, to date, has provided over $750,000 in loans to impoverished women in Malawi to allow them to start their own business and improve life for themselves and those who depend on them. The Six Nations are upon us and there are all manner of questions just waiting to be answered such as: Can Ireland do the Double Grand Slam? Who will start for England? And the French - always a question mark there. Alongside Brian Moore to try and answer some of those questions is the former England and Gloucester wing James Simpson-Daniel. With Brian's assertion that this is the trickiest Six Nations to call so far, James and Brian begin by discussing how the Celtic nations could end up defining the story of the tournament - with James even arguing a case for Scotland to be Grand Slam winners! They then get onto England, debating who should start at full back, how strong the squad is, and whether we will see Joe Cokanasiga play against Ireland. Joining them to argue the case for Ireland to complete the Double is former Ireland and Lions flanker, Stephen Ferris, who says there seems to be an arrogance coming from the English out of nowhere. Stephen also believes that Joe Schmidt has his Ireland squad mapped out for the rest of the year so doesn't expect too much experimenting. As for the rest of the Celtic nations we speak with Lions and Wales wing Shane Williams on the quiet confidence within Warren Gatland's ranks. Shane notes they are "blessed with quality" across the back row to make up for Taulupe Faletau's absence, but not enough to predict they can win the tournament. On the Scottish side of the border Sean Lamont is brimming with optimism for his former side's ambitions with the full back saying you have to be on top of your game to win, but he thinks Scotland can finish top of the table. Whether you have a website or landing page or are about to build one, now is the best time to start optimizing for conversions. Data scientist and conversion rate expert Brian Massey is here to talk about the latest tools and methods to turn your landing page into a money making machine. Thanks to new tools, apps, and computing power, there is no excuse not to optimize your website. These tools can help you truly understand the user experience and how to get the outcomes that you desire. We talk about new tools, smart tactics, and how data driven design is the future of digital marketing. Find Out More About Brian Here: Conversion SciencesBrian Massey on LinkedIn@bmassey on TwitterBrian Massey on FacebookYour Customer Creation Equation In This Episode: [01:29] How Brian began in the conversion world. He is a computer programmer by training, but he was drawn to sales. [02:06] He got involved with semiconductor sales after college. He then moved to coding and started his own business in the 90s. [02:33] This was a time when he worked with Internet graphics with a dial-up connection. [02:47] He then started using his own analytics package to help companies build out their lead generation platforms. [03:06] In 2006, Brian saw the Wizard Academy presentation. For him, this put language to conversion optimization. [03:45] With Brian's varied background as a computer programmer, corporate salesperson, corporate marketer, and entrepreneur, he knew being a conversion scientist was right for him. [04:07] Why Brian wears the lab coat? He has always been a science geek and loved Bill Nye the Science Guy. [04:40] He wanted to introduce some kitsch and some camp. Introducing science into his work added fun.   [05:27] How we need to stand out and be remarkable in the real world and the online world.work makes it fun. [05:54] The worst mistake happening these days with conversion optimization. Moore's law of doubling transistors every year. We have amazing tools from the cloud to mobile. It's easier now than ever to test. [07:50] When data was hard to collect in was expensive. Then assumptions had to be made. [08:20] Now data can be discovered for A/B testing to usability. [08:48] People who are still using the old “Mad Men” design process are in trouble. [09:35] How agencies have the option of creating data based designs based on real user based data and tool sets. [10:11] A well executed strategy for using your data. [10:35] A Landing page example. The page needs to keep the promise that was made and get the visitor to do something. [11:24] At the beginning, we might take a guess. Then we can look at popular email subject lines, PPC ads, and data that has been converting. [12:39] Also check out mobile visitors click to call. [12:50] The copywriter needs to understand the visitors and build the personas and get the message right. [13:08] Run your images and headlines through something like Usabilityhub. [14:23] Use eye tracking studies like Sticky.ai to make sure that your users are actually looking at what you want them to look at. [15:06] You can also use heat map reports and watch session recordings. Also run analytics and implement A/B traffic testing. [16:01] Brian uses these interim tools because they have six months to deliver. They do free unlimited user testing. [16:51] At first, look at other sources of data that aren't part of the landing page. Then move on to monitoring data on the landing page. [17:02] Usability tools like Helio are great for mockups. [17:14] You can do a five-minute test, a quick test, or a question test. These services provide the panels. It's not as good as A/B testing, but it will provide data. [18:42] UserTesting.com is also an amazing tool. [19:20] Once you have your first idea then you can turn to Crazy Egg for heat map reports or inspectlet for session recordings or even Hotjar. [19:55] Run Adobe Analytics or Google Analytics underneath the site. [19:58] Then you can pick up Visual Website Optimizer or Optimizely or Omniconvert or convert.com or Google Optimize. [20:31] Sticky.ai uses the camera to see how people are interacting with your web pages. [22:29] With modern tools you can see what information spikes when people are watching your video. This gives you cues as to whether you should place the information on the top or not. [23:22] Facebook can also bring people to ads that are very much like your prospects and customers. You can also see which images and words get clicked through the most. [24:08] This data can eliminate poor options. [26:03] Optimizing a website and mobile versus desktop. Get data from a landing page, and if it's not performing well, check to see if people can see the call to action. You can use something like Hotjar to find out when people are scrolling off of the page. [27:23] You can check the pricing page with a heat map from Crazy Ggg.This tells you where people click and where their mouse is moved. This will show you what features they are interested in and where you should put them on the page. [28:25] Narrowing it down to the ideas that are most likely to move the needle. Real traffic A/B testing is best for this. [28:53] Now put the test on Usabilityhub. [29:30] Once you have an idea of the data then you can have the designer create a page. Once again, it's time for further testing. [30:01] It's an iterative process that expands the testing and development cycle. [30:31] Being underwater is the part of the page that is actually not being seen. [32:53] Visual Website Optimizer and Optimizely we are the most common tools that Brian uses. He also uses Sentient for AI. [35:44] Creating an A/B test for a submit button on a lead generation page. Testing images, headlines, and buttons. Address the different kinds of visitors that will visit the page. Action oriented or methodical. [37:51] Are any of these words being tested in ads? Narrow it down to four different words. Then open a tool like Visual Optimizer. [38:56] The test needs to run to statistical significance. Turn off loser tests. [40:02] Testing to statistical significance. Configure the tool correctly using a statistical significance calculator. The transactions determine significance. [42:28] Surprising tests that Brian has discovered. Carousels work against conversions. They tested a client requested carousel and it had over a 30% lift. [43:53] Beautiful pages don't always win against ugly. [44:48] Digital marketers need to use these tools. You can't guess your way to user data anymore. [47:55] Best takeaways from the course. Setting up the digital lab. Choosing tools and free plugins. How the design process has changed and understanding analytics. User testing. Landing page best practices. Choosing copy ,headlines, and images through to A/B testing. [49:34] You can be a scientist and earn your lab coat. It will fundamentally change your success as a digital marketer. Seventies rock icons Bad Company received a much-needed shot in the arm when founding members Simon Kirke and Mick Ralphs recruited relative newbie Brian Howe to replace the great Paul Rodgers. By that point, Brian had recently started to breakthrough when he sang on Ted Nugent's Penetrator record. With Brian's help, Bad Company reached a whole new audience and kept the name alive throughout the late 80s and early 90s with Howe-penned hits like "No Smoke Without Fire", "Holy Water" and "How About That". Unfortunately, as is often the case, tensions between Brian and the Mick and Simon duo brought an end to this version of the band and it isn't pretty. Since then, Brian has continued to tour singing the songs he made famous. And, thankfully, he is currently on the mend after a massive heart attack a few months ago. This is a fascinating story behind one of the greatest voices in rock history. Enjoy!   https://www.brianhowe.com/

Fort Collins conundrum: Mod Pizza vs Pizza Rev Espresso Shot: back by popular demand For Your Protection Did you know that coffee was originally chewed and not drunk? Yeah, a cool little piece of coffee history is that some East African tribes used to grind coffee cherries (some sources call them berries) and roll them into animal fat. They were used to provide energy for their warriors going to battle. West African history has some fun coffee history, too. One story, from Yemen, claims that farmers noticed their goats were full of "pep" after eating the berries of a particular plant, who's properties had never been assessed before. The people described the goats as "dancing" due to intoxication from the berries. So, naturally, they had to try for themselves! There are dozens of stories of different groups of people around the world discovering coffee, and its effects. There are even more stories about coffee concoctions being used to cure diseases and connoisseurs planting beans in areas of the earth where it didn't grow naturally, only to see it thrive! So yes, we drink coffee for your protection! Drink coffee: do stupid things faster with more energy. This week, we decided to delay our previously scheduled format until next week, as a member of The Hollywood Outsider family has passed on. We did not feel it appropriate to air a normal show, given the circumstances, so instead Aaron and Scott sit down to share their thoughts on the loss of a founding member of the show. We conclude with a respectfully edited re-airing of Justin Macumber's farewell episode, and we encourage you to dive into his collection of books and articles. As you listen to this episode, several of our hosts also wanted to share their thoughts on Justin with his audience. You can find those below. John My experiences with Justin started as a listener of the Hollywood Outsider. He was the voice that I loved disagreeing with…but most often he made me crazy when I had to agree with him. His insights and appreciation for pop culture helped make the show what it is today. It was a pleasure and an honor to share the few episodes I could with him. A great wealth of knowledge has been lost, fare thee well Justin.   Brian My involvement with The Hollywood Outsider has afforded me countless unique experiences, laughs, and friendships over the years. One of those treasures was Justin Macumber. (My God, he would never let me forget that compliment lol). If there was one thing Justin and I were guaranteed to have a good time doing together, it was making Aaron frustrated. We would finish the pre-show greetings and sound checks. Everybody’s ready to get started. All’s quiet. Aaron would inhale and then… “UTINNI!!!” The Star Wars sound bite that would trip up Aaron’s focus enough to the point of having to do multiple retakes. It never quit being funny (even though Aaron would say otherwise). Justin’s cackling laughter always made it worth the cost of whatever eye rolling I could feel Aaron sending my way. His honest laughs were so infectious that you could not help but join in and I knew comedy gold was struck when I heard that loud laugh. Things weren’t always fun and games. There were heated moments for sure. There were times I would feel like FedEx-ing a throat punch to him. As with any family, you have your ups and downs. The Hollywood Outsiders are no different. But by the end of the night, there was usually a priceless and hilarious discussion that never seemed to get recorded. He was always in the middle of it – if not leading it. And a “goodnight” to everybody that sometimes included a “love you guys”. It’s hard to believe I write this having spent hundreds of hours with Justin, yet never even had lunch with him in person. That’s one of the interesting things about the time we live in. You can have a meaningful bond with someone you’ve never physically met. We got to see him chase his dream of being a published author. Consoled him as he worried about his wife’s own health scare. Shared Christmas gifts with one another. And now he’s gone. It’s not fair. We’ll never get to hear his squeaky chair; hear him softly sing “It’s Been Awhile” anytime that phrase was said; or introduce himself with his own theme music again. And that is a hole that’ll never be filled (that’s what she said *wink*). We love you. We miss you. Farewell, my friend.   Aaron Many years ago, we were putting together a podcast to talk about entertainment, and we needed a voice. Someone distinct, insightful, contemplative, occasionally combative, and passionate. Scott knew a fella who had already established himself in the podcast community with his show catering to writers, and his name was Justin Macumber. With Brian in the mix, we all clicked almost instantly, each of us taking swipes at each other’s tastes, and often Justin and I specifically would engage in heated debates that would ultimately end in no winner declared, but everyone listening laughing hysterically. Or ironically. One of those. The truth of the matter is, there were times we each probably wanted to lock each other in the LOST hatch, but more times than not, we were smiling and over it in minutes. We are both very passionate about the things we love, and as a person who loves a good debate, Justin was always a stellar sparring partner. Along the way, he also became a friend. He loved to tell me when I was wrong, and no topic was off limits. I recall once we even had a hefty argument over my parenting choices, which in hindsight was pretty hilarious because of how ridiculously inappropriate his advice was. At the same time, there were numerous instances where Justin and his “so left he’s leaning sideways” manner helped me see sides to a subject I never would have considered, had he not persisted in only that way he can. We ended up bonding over numerous interests, and we even did a few side projects together. Those efforts led directly to my friendships with Troy, Wayne, Darrell, and many others. Looking back, it’s amazing to think of the many branches a single relationship leads to. It all culminated in a trip to SXSW where we spent 5 days together watching movies and having a lifetime of experiences. Over the past two years, I have witnessed his hardships and struggles, and the impact they took on both his body and his unwavering soul. Even things he loved with every fiber of his being – Krista, Star Wars, Superman, his books – ceased being everyday topics of discussion. For a man so in love with dreams and the limitless possibilities in the stars, life’s harsh realities were taking a toll. I have been trying to put the words together to express what it means to lose a friend you have public discussions with every week, but too many of you already know. Over the past day, such an amazing arsenal of support in every corner of the internet has popped up, reminding those who knew him who he was, and those who didn’t what they missed. But unlike so many of our friends and family who have passed, Justin is not lost to the ether. He has left an indelible mark on his community of fans in numerous forms. Between his work on Dead Robots Society and The Hollywood Outsider, his passionate voice can live on. With his many published books, his vision, words, and artistic drive can live on. And with the family, friends, and fans he has left behind, his memory will live on. Even though he doesn’t believe in an afterlife, I pray there is one. So he can look down and see all of this praise, because you know he would absolutely love it. I also want him to read this and know that I was so looking forward to him healing and coming back for another episode, debating with vigor those things we each love. I will miss having that sparring partner. But mostly, I want him to see that I finally used his stupid Oxford comma in this post reasonably, often, and appropriately. As you would always tell me, Justin: For that, you are welcome.

It's Friday! And we're one week closer to Christmas. It's all too easy this time of year to get sucked into the vortex of presents and shopping, so we encourage you to listen to this podcast while you're doing something non commercial-holiday related. Maybe it's time to vacuum the spare bedroom... or clean out that closet you said you would clean out last year. With Brian and Anna (aka Mangodroplet) at the helm, we're going to be talking about a pretty heavy, and very relevant, topic. Sexual harassment, and the "Me Too" phenom, is a vital conversation to have and I think you'll find that our hosts do it justice. In This Episode Welcome Mangodroplet! What do you nerd out about? Gaming community Overwatch Sexual Harassment Anna's "Me Too" story Andy Weir's new book "Artemis" HOLIDAY LIGHTS! Me Too Did you know #MeToo isn't all that new? It went viral in October of this year, but the phrase was actually adopted by a social activist on MySpace back in '06! Tarana Burke created the concept as part of her campaign, whose objective was to promote empowerment through empathy among women of color who experienced abuse. The origin of the phrase, in Tarana's usage of it, is quite revealing and still indicative of our culture today. A young girl confided to Tarana that she had been a victim of sexual abuse and Tarana didn't know what to say. Later on, she says, she had wished she said to the girl: Me too. Talking about sexual harassment is difficult. There are so many victims, friends and family of victims. There are accusers who've been dismissed, and accused who are innocent. There is so much baggage that talking about it can seem fruitless or insurmountable or intimidating. But that often is the case for issues that have such emotional depths tied to them, isn't it? Wherever there are deep emotional wounds there will be issues that are difficult to talk about. This is one of those issues that I like to say needs to undergo a "demystification process". Talking about it, opening the floor for discussion, and, most importantly, listening to others (particularly those who are trying to articulate how the abuse took place) are all important steps in helping to take the mystery and the insurmountable feeling out of the issue. Providing context for abuse can help others to recognize it, it can correct wrong ways of thinking. But we have to be willing to get a little uncomfortable in order to get anywhere. We have a hard working and knowledgable personal trainer with us today.  His name is Guy Petruzzelli.  We will be talking about How to get back into the game to become the your healthiest. As a 43 year old professional  duathlete, who, at the age of 20, found a real passion for multi-sport, was forced to take some time away. I was hit by a car in 1996, leaving me rather injured and finding a comeback difficult. So I finished law school, passed the Illinois Bar exam and thought my time in the sport was over. In 2002, I was fortunate to have some close friends, who were concerned about my physical state, encourage me to get back into the sport. It wasn’t easy, but I came back to it with more desire, drive and passion. I worked hard under the coaching supervision of the great Jennifer Garrison, and in 2008 I was offered an opportunity to turn professional. It was a dream come true. I left law in 2009 to pursue my dream of being a professional multisport athlete and I have been blessed with the opportunity to do more with the sport, and meet a ton of great people along the way. As the 2010 season started to heat up in June, I was out for a training ride and once again, hit by a car. This time, I was left with a broken right collarbone and 3 broken ribs. My doctor insisted that even with surgery, I would miss the remainder of the season and would most likely not even be able to train hard until the start of 2011. I refused to believe that I would be limited for that long. So right after surgery I went to see Nate Aye and John Conquest at Crossfit DuPage. I was very honest about my goals as an athlete and the desire to be in the top tier of pro multisport athletes in 2011. They were very honest in turn, and made it clear – my goals were attainable, but it would take hard work and an open mind. From that day forward, I never looked back. A short 6 weeks later I met someone I knew would be a friend for life. Someone who was as driven as I was, constantly  challenging the norm, and believed that working smart was the key to success in multisport. Brian McKenzie from Crossfit Endurance opened my eyes to even more change to my training methods, breaking down old school endurance training ideology, improving my running form, and changing my mentality as how I approach training and racing. I was skeptical for the first hour I heard him talk, and then I watched as in less than 48 hours, I had improved my running efficiency by 53%. I was a believer. With Brian’s help, I was able to achieve 2 things in less than 5 weeks – continue to speed up my healing process, and improve fitness. When I went to see my doctor at week 9 post-surgery, the x-rays showed 90% bone growth, and I was cleared to race duathlons. But the most amazing part – my 5K time dropped, my LT wattage on the bike increased by 33% and I was 8 lbs. lighter than pre-accident. This wasn’t by accident; this was due to following Crossfit Strength and Crossfit Endurance principles. Best part, I’m still improving.  To spread the word of my recovery and passion, I was the focus of a Triathlete Magazine article in the February 2011 edition, written by TJ Murphy. I was then added to the book written by Brian MacKenzie in November 2012 – “Power, Speed, Endurance, a skill based approach to endurance training”, and featured in Chris Solomon’s article in the January 2013 issue of Outside Magazine, where Chris chronicles his use of Crossfit Endurance to train for a marathon.  To prove that I practice what I preach, I’ve been working with Cody Burhardt, head coach at Power Speed Endurance, to help me reach my current world rank of 11th in Duathlon. I’ve also appeared on the podcast www.athleteologist.com – episode 8,where I was able to share my story. facebook.com/guypetruzzelli twitter,com/guypetruzzelli instagram.com/guypetruzzelli www.guypetruzzelli.blogspot.com For additional podcast from Healthy Living With Eric Su visit www.ericwsu.com/podcasts.   Remember, Eric Su’s FREE Results Coaching Strategy session: www.ericwsu.com/freecoachingcall Watch Eric Su on Facebook Live.  Visit www.facebook.com/ericwsutrainer every Friday at 9:30am CST. With Brian out on tour, Bill welcomes podcaster Justin Tyler (SongSpotters.com) to talk about the seminal (already) trans punk rock anthem Transgender Dysphoria Blues (2014, Total Treble) by Against Me! Formed by then-name Tom Gable as a teenager in 1997, the band went on to become an icon known for their political fueled punk rock anthems. Surprising many, front woman Laura Jane Grace came out as transgender in 2012 and began transitioning to living her life as a woman. Using her own experiences and that of a fictional transgender prostitute, Grace penned and released this album a couple years later. Justin talks about how this album was his introduction to the band, and how it has factored into a cause that he feels close to. We then jump into discussing gender expression and toys, transgender dysphoria in the DSM V, how these songs are fantastic sing along songs, Atom Willard's awesome drumming, suicide rates in the trans community, how sexual identity and gender expression are troubles for many (including cisgender individuals), how Laura Jane Grace is a hero for taking on the responsibility of being a trans communicator, how even those with good intentions sometimes have trouble with pronouns, sci-fi author Ann Leckie's series that exists in a gender neutral world, and more as we make our way through there album track by track!

Tech and Tools Dominate The Future of Marketing - #SMACTALK Episode  In this week’s episode of SMACTalk (Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud), Brian Fanzo and I discuss the growing importance that tools and technology are playing in the world of marketing. With Brian heading off to Social Shake Up, the annual Social Media Today event in Atlanta, we started pondering the biggest challenges that enterprises and business are having with marketing and as it turns out we firmly believe it comes down to this one thing: Marketing historically has been a very unscientific profession. There certainly is science behind the subject as a whole, but for many companies marketing came down to a lot of trial and error. This was certainly the case before social media, digital and data became so prevalent. However, with this emergence of information and data, marketers can no longer get away with just operating on feel. We have hit a point where marketing has to be done with proper tools AND proper goals.  In this podcast we discuss how the hospitality industry has done a great job of leading this trend with their use of social data. Brands like Marriott now use social listening to make sure that brand sentiment is positive, complaints are responded to and VIP’s are given memorable experiences that they can choose to share with their communities. Brian even shares an anecdotal experience of his arrival in Atlanta… “After showing up first thing in the morning, hours before the hotel was supposed to give me a room, I was outside Periscoping and I mentioned that the hotel didn’t have a room ready (not complaining). During my live stream the hotel entered into the conversation and thanked me for my patience and it wasn’t long after that the room was ready.” Brian’s story was a great example of how social listening and engagement can be used as a tool to create better marketing and better customer experiences. Just consider how we are now sharing this story as earned media and how it may positively impact the brand?  However, this goes far beyond just hospitality. The need to use data and information to create better programs for marketing between brands and their consumers is critical in every industry. In the future companies aren’t going to invest in anything they cannot measure. So for marketing technologists it comes down to using tools and technology to build trust and results in their marketing efforts.

Brian is the co-author of an epic textbook on training titled Power, Speed, Endurance , and the New York Times bestseller, Unbreakable Runner. As the founder of the CrossFit Endurance movement, Brian gained notoriety for challenging the dated conventional endurance wisdom of a mileage obsessed, “more is better” approach. Brian’s comprehensive program blending traditional aerobic mileage with varied forms of explosive strength training, flexibility/mobility work (he’s a close associate of MobilityWOD.com and Becoming a Supple Leopard author Dr. Kelly Starrett), breath work and recovery has busted the boundaries and barriers of the old school approach. Brian has occasionally faced challenges and controversy by those favoring status quo. Consider this salacious magazine article title from Outside magazine in 2013: “Brian MacKenzie's Controversial New Approach to Marathon Training: The mastermind behind CrossFit Endurance says the best way to train for a marathon is to run less and torture yourself more in the gym.” Well, it’s not nearly as simple and crude as the frequently referenced juxtaposition of “quantity versus quality” suggests. It’s now becoming clear that chronic cardio is not only ineffective but can also destroy your health. Furthermore, it’s also evident that endurance athletes are deficient in many areas of general fitness, especially preserving efficient technique as they become fatigued. If your low back and hip flexors get cooked at mile 20 of a marathon (because, for argument’s sake, that’s a butt-long way and you’ve perhaps never run further than that in training), some of the energy your cardiovascular machine is still able to produce for the final six-mile slog is wasted. Instead of maintaining a balanced center of gravity and generative efficient explosive force with each stride, you center of gravity caves and you collapse a bit into the ground on each stride. This is where the explosive training goes in. Loading a squat bar with weight, running sprints or performing any other explosive efforts is in many respects simulating what happens to your body at mile 20, but without having to exhaust yourself by running the first 20 miles in training before obtaining that desired breakthrough adaptation. Explosive work is not an endurance “hack” (you will never hear Brad use that word on this show or in life, ever). Rather, it’s adding a critically important training modality to your game in order to best prepare your body for daunting competitive challenges without falling apart. With Brian passionately advocating to expand our training consciousness, he has come off as an intense guy, which he is. After all, that’s him sprinting in Tim Ferriss’s epic Four Hour Body book trailer and his thumbnail image with his individual finger tattoos spelling “U-N-S-C-A-R-E-D.” What was cool in meeting Brian person was how thoughtful and chill he is. The conversation went off into the metaphysical and reflective direction instead of just going into his boiler plate PowerSpeedEndurance message. Brian starts by discussing the perspective he has gained from his recent terrible accident, surgery, and recovery process, gives a refreshingly expanded perspective of the dated and oversimplified quality versus quantity debate, countering the “more is better” mentality with the priceless maxim, “Better is Better.” Perhaps the best takeaway from the show is Brian’s emphasis that the next evolution in human performance will come in the area of recovery, and complementary practices such as breathing, cold therapy, and heat therapy, of which he is super focused on these days.
