Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. First, Dom welcomes in James Fishback, founder of Incubate Debate, America's fastest-growing debate league, onto the podcast after he penned a piece for The Free Press that investigates claims by the Left that progressive books are being censored in public schools. Fishback reveals that, through his extensive research, the opposite is true, finding that many public and school libraries have kept books written by conservative authors out of their selections. Then, Dom welcomes in Dave Brown, a longtime high school coach of many sports out in Oregon, who announced last week that he'd resign due to his refusal to support biologically male students competing with biologically female athletes. Brown explains his decision, noting that his wife also retired due to the same principle, telling of the negative implications that this social push has had on Title IX and women and girls playing sports. James is the co-founder and Chief Investment Officer of Azoria Partners, a global macro investment firm. Prior to Azoria, he served as the Head of Macro at Greenlight Capital, a two-billion-dollar hedge fund led by David Einhorn. He is also the founder of Incubate Debate, America's fastest-growing high school debate league. As a former national high school debate champion and volunteer debate coach, he launched Incubate in 2019. James was fortunate to have the opportunity to display his talent and strategies to the well-known billionaire hedge fund manager David Einhorn, which also resulted in James getting exposed to new ideas and ways of looking at economies and markets. Unwilling to repeat the same mantra commonly put out by the financial media, James presents a fresh look at why the economy and the markets have multiple silver linings. For years, James Fishback has been dedicated to formal debate as a competitor and coach. In 2019, James launched “Incubate Debate,” a nonprofit organization bringing no-cost, free-speech debate tournaments, workshops, and camps to students across Florida. The organization seeks to overcome economic hardship and increasing censorship in national debate events. In May, James wrote an article, “At High School Debates, Debate Is No Longer Allowed,” for The Free Press. He exposed the punishment debaters receive for “what they say and how they say it,” and the ideological constraints judges enact in tournaments. In June, James wrote a second article for The Free Press about tournament punishments based on debaters' comments on social media—completely unrelated to their debate performance. In lockstep with the rest of academia, ideas on the debate stage are being censored on the basis of “safety” and ideological conformity. Watch this episode on YouTube.
Briana Whatley, a south Florida high school student and national debate champion, discusses her experiences in the debate space since she started in the fourth grade, shedding light on the challenges she faced for expressing certain viewpoints. Briana shares instances where she faced censorship in debates, especially when addressing topics related to former President Donald Trump and challenging prevailing narratives. Briana reveals her thoughts on censorship, the biases within the debate space, and the complexities she faced for expressing more conservative views in educational settings. The conversation unfolds to cover topics such as affirmative action, cancel culture, and the evolving landscape of debates in the modern era. The episode also touches on Briana's involvement with Incubate Debate, an organization that fosters a more open and respectful debate environment. High school debate is considered an ideal extracurricular activity for aspiring lawyers, politicians, or anyone seeking to learn the tools of effective communication and persuasion. But a slew of recent reports argue that high school debate is being captured by political ideology, rendering certain arguments off-limits, some debate topics undebatable, and ad hominem attacks fair game. Debate judges disclose their judging paradigms by saying things like, “I will listen to conservative-leaning arguments, but be careful,” or, “Before anything else, including being a debate judge, I am a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist. . . . I cannot check the revolutionary proletarian science at the door when I'm judging.” Some debates even devolve into personal attacks, spurred on by judges who say they “will consider indictments of an opponent on the basis that they have done [or] said something racist, gendered, [or] -phobic in their personal behavior.” On today's show, we're joined by two former high school debaters who are dismayed by these trends. James Fishback is the founder of Incubate Debate, which hosts free debate tournaments for students in Florida. Matthew Adelstein is a rising sophomore studying philosophy at the University of Michigan and publishes Bentham's Newsletter, a newsletter about utilitarianism. As much as one-third of Congress did debate while in high school. Competitive debate is how future leaders are learning rhetoric and how to engage with issues. So it matters a lot that today's debate judges are promoting open racial discrimination, restrictions on free speech, and even the doxing of competitors' tweets and Facebook posts. Incubate Debate founder James Fishback joins Andrew to talk about the disastrous decline of high school debate, and the prospects for revitalizing it with a new alternative to the rotten national organization.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

High School debate is about having the skills to argue both sides of an issue. But are judges putting their fingers on the scale? James Fishback from Incubate Debate joined Jason with his reporting.
Competitive debate veteran and veteran debate coach James Fishback joins Tim to talk about free speech, and at times the lack of certain kinds of debate in high school debate. James founded an organization called Incubate Debate in 2019 after serving as a volunteer debate coach in Miami-Dade county for two-years. Prior to that, he competed in high school debate for four-years in Broward County. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Hijacking_High_School_Debate_auphonic.mp3 James Fishback started Incubate Debate, with the goal of making debate accessible to students of all socioeconomic backgrounds and political beliefs. Over the past four years, James says Incubate Debate has helped thousands of students from all over Florida through its tournaments, workshops, and camps, all at no cost. But what caught our attention was some publicity James received when he spoke out on the issue of free speech and high school debate. According to James, there are some points you're just not allowed to make as a high school debater. But before we get into that, I wanted to find out more about James' own experience with high school debate and how it's supposed to be. Links Incubate Debate At High School Debates, Debate is No Longer Allowed, The Free Press National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) NSDA Statement on Its Policies (Link to Google Docs) About this Episode's Guest James Fishback James Fishback founded Incubate Debate in 2019 after serving as a volunteer debate coach in Miami-Dade county for two-years and competing in high school debate for four-years in Broward County. Both were incredible and eye-opening experiences, but ones in which he recognized tremendous issues that prevented many students from participating in and reaping the benefits of debate. In 2019, he started Incubate Debate, with the goal of making debate accessible to students of all socioeconomic backgrounds and political beliefs. Over the past four years, Incubate has welcomed thousands of students from all over Florida to its tournaments, workshops, and camps, all at no cost. Incubate is built on the principle of making debate easy to learn, hard to master. Through our proprietary debate formats (TownHall, Roundtable, Tribunal), Incubate is easy to learn: students get a basic understanding of the rules and processes fast, but it is hard to master because it demands a high level of skill, knowledge, and practice to be successful. Mastering Incubate's challenging, yet accessible style of debate requires dedication and a willingness to continually strive for improvement. NSDA Statement The following is the Editor's Note from The Free Press Article mentioned in the episode and linked-to above: "One day after this story published, the NSDA released a statement on Twitter, stating in part: 'Our judge training materials in partnership with the National Federation of State High School Associations provide best practices for adjudicating speech and debate, such as "Judges should decide the round as it is debated, not based on their personal beliefs."...Tabroom.com is a project of the National Speech & Debate Association, and its purpose is to provide a tournament management system for debate and speech tournaments worldwide. The 47,000 judge paradigms housed therein represent the opinions and viewpoints of the individual paradigm authors. Schools or other organizations that use Tabroom.com to hire judges are free to evaluate those paradigms before engaging their services.'"

This school year, James has visited high schools across Florida and spoken with thousands of students about lethal fentanyl through Incubate's Not Even Once initiative. He has seen firsthand how little students know about fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that represents 80% of all fatal teen overdoses. He views the teen fentanyl crisis as a massive supply side issue and an education issue, both of which must be solved in order to save young men and women from this deadly poison. At a time when many schools insist on hosting drag queen story hour, there appears to be no time, effort, or urgency to discuss fentanyl with young people, who are peddled fentanyl via social media in the form of counterfeit pills made to look like FDA-approved drugs, Percocet, Oxycontin, Adderall. He will tell you what kids really think!
