A compelling discussion between Arnold Stricker, Mark Langston, and guest Andy Hahn, centered around Hahn's new book, 'Mapping St. Louis: A History of the Gateway City in 40 Rare Maps.' Key theme to listen for is the significance of maps as not just navigational aids but as critical historical records that encapsulate the story of St. Louis over the centuries. The dialogue begins with a humorous yet serious exploration of how modern technology has changed the way we navigate our world, alongside a nostalgic reflection on traditional map-reading skills that may be fading away.Hahn passionately shares his lifelong fascination with maps, which originated in his childhood home filled with historical artifacts and large maps. His narrative intertwines personal anecdotes with the broader historical context of St. Louis, showcasing how each of the 40 maps in his book serves as a snapshot of the city at different points in time. Listeners are taken on a journey from the city's founding days through significant developments, including the evolution of neighborhoods and the impact of socio-political changes that shaped the city's landscape. Hahn's insights illuminate the connection between geography and the lived experiences of St. Louisans, highlighting the importance of understanding one's environment. The episode also addresses the darker aspects of mapping history, particularly the use of maps in systemic segregation practices like redlining, which have had long-lasting effects on the city's demographics and cultural fabric. This discussion prompts listeners to reflect on the implications of historical maps and how they can inform our understanding of contemporary issues. By the conclusion of the episode, the hosts and Hahn leave the audience with a deeper appreciation for maps as powerful tools that tell the story of a city, its people, and their collective journey through time.Presentation and Book SigningsOctober 14, 6-7pm: Florissant Historical Society, Gittemeier HouseOctober 20, 3-6pm: Campbell House MuseumNovember 3, 2-3:30pm: Stupp Pavilion at Tower Grove ParkNovember 6, 12-1pm: Landmarks Association of St. LouisNovember 16, 2-3pm: Thomas Sappington House MuseumNovember 17, 2-4pm: Kern Pavilion a Lafayette ParkNovember 24, 2-4pm: Campbell House MuseumJanuary 11, 10-11:30am: Ulysses S. The Lakers have been eliminated from the playoffs, and for the first time, LeBron James sees a first-round playoff exit, and the longtime face of the league clearly isn't handling it well. Set a better example, LBJ. With all this talk about the Mariners possibly trading away their best player, there's no better person to check in with on this subject than former Mariner Mark Langston. Langston was, of course, traded for Randy Johnson. He is now a part of the Angels broadcast crew. We also ask him about the greatest (and only) two-way player in the MLB, Shohei Ohtani. Two overtime games in the NHL last night. That makes 37 percent of all playoff games this season that have gone into OT. We've got the highlights on the Power Play. 0:00-13:45: Jeffrey discusses his upbringing on a Native American reservation, where baseball is competing for people’s interests with pro wrestling and Elvis, among other things. While he describes himself as a baseball fan (by way of the Bash Brothers) before a Mariners fan, Jeffrey came to love the M’s with a little help from his wife. Then, we move to baseball cards being a portal into the game. 13:50-24:10: A natural shift to young player talk and how that teaches patience. Full nostalgia comes next, with Jeffrey recalling his admiration for Mark Langston. The temptation of “What if?” rears its ugly head, but that’s nothing new around here. 24:15-32:15: Eat your heart out nerds, we’re talkin’ INTANGIBLES! Jeffrey mentions how much he likes a certain player that will not be named here. The one thing we agree, on though, is The King. Also, as Mariners fans, we’ve grown accustomed to seeing players leave Seattle and wind up in the playoffs. How do you approach that? 32:20-44:45: Where does Jeffrey’s excitement with the current Mariners lie? At what point do you start to question the Mariners and your allegiance to them? Jeffrey details the way his wife has helped his baseball fandom and knowledge grow. For instance, she patented the Justin Verlander-Tom Brady comparison. That spawns some lively banter about which team we hate the most. It’s worth noting that our back and forth about the Angels was recorded before they signed Anthony Rendon. 44:50-1:02:52: Looking to the future, or in other words…JULIOOOOOO! As per usual, the end of the podcast becomes a discussion on the discussion of fandom. Finally, Jeffrey remembers his darkest moment as a Mariner fan, which came in a game that didn’t even count. Few trades in the modern era have altered the course of two franchises like the deal 30 years ago this week that sent Mark Langston from the Seattle Mariners to the Montreal Expos for three pitchers, one of whom was a wild, 6'10" left-hander named Randy Johnson. Obviously, Johnson would go on to become one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, but Mike and Bill find that there was so much more to the deal than that one singular player. Plus, happy birthday to Joe Judge and Bobby Murcer!

The Domain Name System (DNS) is an essential component of the Internet, a virtual phone book of names and numbers, but we rarely think about it until something goes wrong. DNS also serves as the backbone for other services critical to organizations including email, external web access, file sharing and voice over IP (VoIP). There are steps, however, that network administrators can take to ensure the security and resilience of their DNS infrastructure and avoid security pitfalls. In this podcast, Mark Langston discusses best practices for designing a secure, reliable DNS infrastructure. Listen on Apple Podcasts.
