Non Stanford has been involved in and surrounded by sport for her entire life. She was destined for big things on the track and was 3x Welsh Schools 1500m champion, before being mentored by Dame Kelly Holmes. But injuries took their toll and Non made a successful transition into triathlon. She moved to Leeds and in 2012, she was crowned U23 World Champion. Just a year later, she became ITU World Champion. But Non has had her fair share of ups and downs since. 2014 was wiped out by injury, in 2016, she finished 4th behind GB teammate Vicky Holland at the Rio Olympics. At the end of 2018 Non left the Leeds set up to join Joel Filliol’s squad. She won WTS Hamburg in 2019, before having knee surgery at the end of the year which put her hopes of a second Olympics in doubt. "I know I’m nowhere near the levels of where I was when I was qualifying for the Olympics or winning a World Triathlon series, I’ve just not had enough time, but I’ve been training since Max was a month old , so in 7 months, and I am happy with where I have got to." 01.15 I had to commit to a goal, I had to commit to something. I was just training and doing bits and and pieces. Without a goal, say the kids had had a rough night and I was tired, I’d be like ‘ah, I won’t go swimming this morning’ but with that goal, I have to go and do it. 01.50 I’m nervous about the distance and where my fitness is. I stopped training with Max at 16 weeks and I literally did half an hour a day and it wasn’t every day and I just don’t know where I am in terms of fitness. 03.00 If you went to a World Series and you were really fit and you came 30th, you’d be really disappointed. If you went to a World Series and you were aiming to win and you came third but had a really good performance, you’d still be relatively happy. But with this race and the new distance, if I just finish it, I think I will be relatively happy. Performance isn’t as much as a priority as longevity is now, but I still love to compete.  This dilemma, so well stated by one of our clients, got us thinking.  It’s well documented that exercise extends both lifespan and healthspan, and the people we work with typically have no trouble meeting the widely recommended 150 minutes per week of moderate physical activity.  But what happens when you’re a competitive athlete training significantly more than that? For this podcast, I met up with Dr. Tommy Wood, MD, PhD and Performance Psychologist Simon Marshall, PhD to talk about the benefits and risks of intense exercise with regard to longevity and healthspan.  The science points to a U-shaped curve with dangers at both ends of the spectrum - not enough activity and also too much - and we discuss the point at which an athlete’s long-term health might suffer. Siri Lindley is triathlon coach to the elites and a two-time triathlon world champion.Lindley grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, as an athletic and shy child.[4] She attended Greenwich High School, where she played field hockey, ice hockey, and lacrosse.[5] She later attended Brown University, where she played at the varsity level in the same three sports and graduated with a degree in psychology.[6][7] Following graduation, she spent two years coaching field hockey and lacrosse – one year at Princeton University and one year at Lehigh University.[6]She dominated the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Rankings over the course of her career as a pro, winning 13 World Cup races between 2000-2002 and becoming the 2001 ITU World Champion. Siri won the ITU World Cup Series both years by achieving #1 ranking in the world. With her professional sporting goals achieved, Siri turned to coaching in 2003. Her experience and talent as a coach is seen in the tremendous results of her athletes at all race distances, both at the elite and age-group level.Siri has coached athletes to Olympic Medals, and World Championship crowns at both the Ironman, and half ironman distances. Siri has been inducted into the Brown University Hall of Fame. Siri graduated from Brown in 1991 with a bachelors degree in Psychology. It is a true honor to present my second all english episode – an interview with one of the most influential and successful triathletes: Chris “Macca” McCormack. He has won the ITU World Champion title five times, he has broken the 8-hour barrier over the Ironman distance 4 times – the only man to break the barrier more than twice. Hailed by ESPN as the “world’s fittest athlete”, he has won more than 220 races during his career as a professional triathlete, with a stunning 76 per cent win rate in his race career events. Together with swedish tour operator Apollo I got the chance to meet up with Macca at the fantastic sport hotel Thanyapura, in Phuket Thailand, where he now is the Executive Chairman. We talk about his childhood, about the first time he saw the Kona Ironman on TV together with his mother, about discovering the world through triathlon.
