Techstination interview: Vuzix Blade 2 smart glasses bring new applications and abilities: CEO Paul Travers
At CES earlier this year, Vuzix unveiled Vuzix Shield, a revolutionary leap for enterprise AR smart glasses. They are lightweight, stylish, prescription-ready safety glasses and a powerful 8-core CPU combine to deliver a singular wearable experience. Vuzix's CEO, Paul Travers, rejoins me on Tech Talks Daily for a catchup on their many developments and milestones and to discuss how Vuzix's technology today is allowing people to connect themselves to the metaverse easily. We discuss how their smart glasses now support Microsoft Endpoint Manager to streamline device onboarding and provisioning for Microsoft Teams. We also talk about other strategic partnerships to address the future of the deskless workforce. About Paul Paul Travers is the founder of Vuzix and has served as President and Chief Executive Officer since 1997 and as a member of our Board of Directors since November 1997. Before the formation of Vuzix, Mr. Travers founded both e-Tek Labs, Inc. and Forte Technologies Inc. He has been a driving force behind the development of Vuzix products. He is a nationally recognized industry expert with more than 30 years of experience in the consumer electronics field and 26 years of experience in the virtual reality and virtual display fields. He holds an Associate degree in engineering science from Canton, ATC, and a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering from Clarkson University.
Paul Travers is the Founder and CEO of Vuzix, a leading supplier of Smart Glasses and Augmented Reality technologies and products for the consumer and enterprise markets. Prior to Vuzix, Paul was an engineer at Eastman Kodak, innovating the future of digital cameras. He went on to become a serial entrepreneur, having started multiple hardware technology companies, including in sound cards for PCs and USB connectivity products.Vuzix was formed more than 20 years ago, and through it, Paul has seen spatial computing technology evolve from the early days of VR in the mid-1990s to the highly capable AR smart glasses of today. In this conversation, Paul describes the Vuzix hardware lineup, including the Blade and the M-series. We discuss how they're being used, where they shine, and what's special about the upcoming Shield device. The Shield will be one of the first devices with a µLED display, and emphasizes “wearability” over field of view or functionality. [quote]We go on to discuss why wearability is so important and how much field of view is big enough to satisfy a large number of use cases. We also discuss the importance of µLED technology and how to solve for prescription at scale. Paul also describes how he wants to support OEMs in the consumer market and provides an overview of how Vuzix will invest the 100+ million dollars they have recently raised. You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com.
I'm really excited about this episode, as I speak to Paul Travers who runs "Husband" a company that creates content with style and substance. We discuss how "Husband" began and what they do. When the cosmic tumblers click into place & the universe opens its vault, miracles can happen. Overcoming challenges happen. All of us have crossroads in life, challenges we have to overcome. Those of us who have had the experience of caring for a parent with Alzheimer's seem to have more crossroads and more challenges. Coping with the disease, what it does to everyone's life, even the eventual end, poses decisions and heartache. How can we honor our loved ones while also healing ourselves? Can we do this while they're still alive? In this episode, I talk to Paul Travers, author of Dancing with the Mountains. Inspired by his dying father's dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail, Paul hits the trail and finds a miracle in the healing power of American's sacred mountains. More than a travelogue, this is a love story about fathers and sons, families battling Alzheimer's, and the people and places along the Appalachian Trail. Sprinkled with humor and humanity, Dancing with the Mountains is a spiritual story about love, life, and healing. Augmented reality (AR) is buzzing, with more demand and opportunities, accelerated partly by a closed world. While smart glasses aren't new, adoption has been low, due more to the fact they just weren't wearable. On today's episode, host Dan Cui welcomed former colleague and friend, Paul Travers, a veteran in the space and CEO and Founder of Vuzix.Cui took viewers way back to the beginnings of virtual reality (VR) with one of Traver's first innovations, the first consumer VR headset comparing it to what available now. He said, “It got much smaller over time. The technology had a long way to go, and use cases have exploded for VR."The company's next-generation smart glass has all the features and functions of any AR product. What makes it unique is its wearability.Travers noted, “They are AR devices that allow you to work in the real world and access information you'd need from a tablet, but it's all hands-free.”They also use Waveguide optics and work like a phone and computer. The company picked up three CES (Consumer Electronics Show) awards this year for the product. The glasses are filling the gap at a time when being there in person isn't possible. “They work as remote support for the medical field, technicians, and others. It's really the future of computing,” Travers added. On the consumer side, Travers sees the glasses as possible a movement toward keeping “phones in your pocket.” With plug and play apps, users can look at a restaurant through the glasses and see their Yelp reviews. They can record a baseball game while actually watching it. Travers also shared the Smart Swim application that automates workouts, measures activity, and more.

Benefits of Gardening (0:00:00) When it comes to taking care of our bodies, giving ourselves a mental rest can change our entire attitude towards the day. For many of us, scrolling through social media is the default mental break we all turn to. But have you ever thought about gardening instead? Planting tomato seeds, fertilizing our lawns, or trimming rose bushes seems like more exhausting work. But, it might just be the mental health activity you need in your life. Joining us is psychologist Dr. Seth Gillihan, to discuss how gardening benefits our mental health. Five Two Love (0:14:55) Only 1 in 60 million births are to quintuplets. The number is surprisingly low, even with the development of fertility treatments, such as IVF. So, Skyler and Jamie Scott were definitely not expecting to hear that after years of trying to have another child, they would be having five. The Scotts currently have seven children, five of them being two-year-old quintuplets. They are internet sensations and run a YouTube channel called “Five Two Love” where they vlog about their fun family life and feature their everyday adventures. They join us to talk about their experience raising quintuplets. Less Meat at Family Meals (0:30:26) There are lots of opinions out there about the best ways to eat healthier. One of those opinions is the idea that you should include less meat on the dinner table. This might seem unreasonable considering the fact that nutritionists say kids need an average of 40 grams of protein a day or 20 chicken nuggets. You could replace the nuggets with ½ a cup of peanut butter... but surely there are other options. So we invited friend of the show Carrie Ann Rhodes to share her experience with us about eating less meat as a family without sacrificing variety at the dinner table. Cashless Society (0:50:36) It seems like every day we're moving further away from using cash. Checks, then debit and credit cards and now things like Apple Pay have replaced dollar bills and coins as the most popular form of payment. Cash is becoming the more cumbersome option, but are we really ready to say goodbye to cash entirely? Here to discuss what a cashless society would really look like is Caleb Silver, Editor in Chief of Investopedia. Smart Glasses (1:05:32) In Ironman, Tony Stark wears a pair of powerful smart glasses that give him infrared vision and the ability to communicate with artificial intelligence to do whatever he wants. While our tech is probably not up to Ironman's speed yet, we are making incredible breakthroughs in technology and smart glasses do exist. We wanted to know more about this advancement in technology. So, we invited CEO Paul Travers and director Matt Margolis of Vuzix, a smart glasses company, to discuss these glasses and what they can do. Dr. Seuss's Birthday (1:20:03) Host of The Apple Seed Sam Payne joins us to help us celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday!

On today's episode of The One With The Podcast, we are joined by Paul Travers - The Irresistible Lister. Paul is a super talented and experienced ex Estate Agent who has been successfully selling homes for decades. Based predominantly in boroughs of London, Paul has repeatedly reversed the fortunes of countless branches in his time – transforming them from under performing, financially crippled offices in to thriving businesses fighting for the top spot in their territories. Paul has worked operationally in almost every position the industry has to offer, even launching his own successful brand, NEW LONDON - providing a niche estate agency service for the new build sector before the financial crash. Following his time as an operational estate agent, Paul carved a career for himself as a copy writer and quickly gained a solid reputation for producing captivating and engaging content. Realising the key role content has to play in bridging the gap between brand and consumer, Paul now extends his services to the modern day estate agent who lacks the time, experience or consistency to publish reliable, relevant and effective content frequently enough to impact on their market. Through Pauls services, he aims to transform your blog from an under-utilised & uninspiring section of your website into a listing magnet whilst building authority and relationships within your local market. In Pauls words – it's easier to do good business, when you're the favorite. Paul is a truly seasoned professional in the property world, and has been selling houses for longer than I have been on the planet. From my side, it was a real privilege to sit down with Paul for the length of time that I did to learn more about his views on how the industry has changed in years gone by, and crucially where he sees things going in the years to come. Paul is now based in BUCAREST not BUDAPEST as you will discover in the opening 30 seconds of todays episode, so the audio was captured via a Zoom call. The internet did let us down occasionally, so in places of todays episode the audio will be a little broken. I do apologise, but please bare with us through the buffering process and soak up all of the golden nuggets you can by reflecting on ones man story that spans across three decades. Paul Travers has been in the XR business long enough to remember the early headsets, which were not exactly elegant in design – he describes one of his early models as a football helmet. But today, Vuzix has managed to shrink a ton of XR potential into sleek, sexy sunglasses that would look good on any goth noir vampire slayer. He chats with Alan about the advantages of svelte headsets, from military applications to making driving safer. Alan: Welcome to the XR for Business Podcast with your host, Alan Smithson. Today’s guest is Paul Travers. Paul is the founder of Vuzix and has served as the president and chief executive officer since 1997. Prior to the formation of Vuzix, Mr. Travers founded both e-Tek Labs and Forte Technologies Inc. He has been a driving force towards the development of products in the consumer market. Paul and Matt, welcome to the show, guys. Paul: Hey, Alan. Thanks for having us. Alan: It’s my absolute honor. You guys are making augmented reality headsets that people actually will want to wear. And I think it’s amazing, your Blade glasses look like a pair of awesome sunglasses. They’re lightweight. They’re wireless. They’re every– they’re all the things. How long has it taken you guys to get there? I mean, you started in 1997. You must have gone through massive iterations along the way. Paul: Yeah, Alan. I mean, we’ve made all the big stuff, the crazy things. They really started in ’93 or ’94 when we started shipping our very first VR headset, the VFX-1. And if you look it up, you’ll see VFX-1, it’s a football helmet sized gizmo. And then in ’97, actually I bought out all the outside shareholders and started Vuzix. A little bit of history there, we started in the defense space. We were making thermal weapons sight engines that go in the back of the light/medium/heavy thermal weapons type programs for DRS and Raytheon. And doing that, we got an opportunity to work with the special forces guys. And if you think about it, these guys are carrying around 300 pounds of gear. They got their laptop. They’re basically the ultimate mobile wearable tech guy. And at night, they would light up like a Christmas tree. So they put a poncho over their head. They had all this gear on and they came to Vuzix and said, look, could you guys make a pair of Oakley style sunglasses? They called it the Oakley Gate. And they said, if we could do that, half the military would buy these things. And so even all the way back then — it was ’97 to 2000 — these Special Forces guys wanted cool. They wanted lightweight. They wanted it truly functional. And so over the years, we’ve come out with a lot of different devices and each iteration we’ve been pushing on, making them smaller and lighter. We were talking a little bit earlier about the top-down versus bottom-up approach. I mean, there’s some really cool technology that’s out there that’s doing all spatial computing and the likes, but it’s big. And for Vuzix, we’re taking the lightweight, trim, wearable all day side of it, but highly functional. When you’re looking for streaming video applications where you’re doing see-what-I-see for maintenance, repair, and overhaul, or you’re in a warehouse all day long taking stuff out of that warehouse. Paul Travers is the Founder and CEO of Vuzix, a leading supplier of smartglasses and augmented reality products for both the enterprise and consumer markets.Prior to Vuzix, Paul was an engineer at Eastman Kodak, innovating the future of digital cameras. He went on to become and a serial entrepreneur, having started multiple hardware technology companies, including in sound cards for PCs and USB connectivity products.Vuzix was formed more than 20 years ago, and through it, Paul has seen spatial computing technology evolve from the early days of VR in the mid-1990s, to the highly capable AR smartglasses of today. In this conversation, Paul talks about that market evolution and the current state of the art from Vuzix. As a company, Vuzix focuses on the form factor as a critical design element when creating their products, and Paul disagrees with the alternative approach of creating large, bulky headsets that are difficult to wear for extended periods of time.Paul goes on to discuss the use cases that will drive early consumer adoption, and the potential impact of Apple releasing their own pair of smartglasses. We also debate the pros and cons of displays technologies, including DLP, laser beam scanning, and micro LED, as well as the tradeoffs of having a single display versus glasses with displays covering both eyes. You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com.
