Danny has mixed emotions about Father's Day. He's trying to balance his needs with the demands of parenting and wants to hear more about fatherhood. He's also curious if being psychiatrists changes our views on parenting. Michelle (34:30) is a newly minted therapist and has questions about the role of transference and countertransference in our sessions. She'd also like to know if we have advice for someone just starting out as a therapist. _______ David argues that balancing personal and parenting needs can be especially hard when--like Danny--you're trying to create a different kind of life for your child. At 08:33 we discuss the various meanings of fatherhood. We discuss our personal experiences starting at 12:49 which quickly becomes sentimental. At 17:29 we discuss parenting as psychiatrists. At 24:50 David has 2 hot tips from psychotherapy that he applies to parenting. David recommends (32:00) the work of David Lancy to get some perspective on modern parenting (http://www.anthropologyofchildhood.usu.edu). Thirty years ago I met Jane Hall Lute while she was my professor at West Point. Since our time together she has gone on to be the Assistant Secretary General for Peacebuilding Support at the United Nations, the former Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security for the United States, and is now the Director at SIPCA. As she mentions,” Jane Hall does not move backward”. Her illustrious career is cornerstonesd with humility, curiosity, and a commitment to learn something new from every conversation. Jane has always been able to distill the most complicated processes and ideas into comprehensible action steps. She is able to shift the context through humor and simplification, on the dime, and even does so a couple of times in this recording. In this episode, you'll hear what leadership means to Jane and how we must show up as leaders, not to be praised or because it's being asked of us - but rather because it is our collective duty as humans. Jane's ‘what you see is what you get” demeanor is funny, sharp, and inviting. I'm so grateful for the time we spent together. Enjoy the show! Show Notes: What happens to your presence when you realize you've become a role model. Human beings don't need to earn respect, they deserve respect. Presence as the most important attribute of a leader. How being a “spectacular failure” can work out for the good. Leading by example stays with people for life. Leaders need to be the weight bearing capacity for the waste of an organization sometimes. What's meant to be on your path will find a way to make its way there. Navigating toxic people in organizations without compromising the mission. An example of setting boundaries and not suffering in silence. One of the most important choices we have is choosing who is in the sandbox with us. Jane's insights on Ukraine and the Western World. Recent years have witnessed a growing attention to the study of female artists, architects, designers and their contribution to the story of modern design. Jane Hall's book Woman Made: Great Women Designers comes to tell the story of 200 pioneering female designers from 50 countries, who have worked in the past 100 years in furniture, textiles, and lighting design. Some helped shaping the industry, some made history, some created work that has been recognized as groundbreaking despite difficulties to express their voices, and together they formed an enormous body of work created exclusively by women.
Jane Hall isn't coping, but she looks cut as hell in her new beanie, so you know, swings and roundabouts. Nowhere in the world celebrates Modernism better than Modernism Week in Palm Springs, California. Every February, they have a huge architecture and design festival and for the last five years, USModernist has been there interviewing nearly all Modernism Week’s keynote speakers plus special guests at the USModernist compound, aka poolside at the hip Hotel Skylark. Almost all the famous names in the pantheon of mid-century modern architecture are, well, male, a function of the widely held but false belief there weren’t many women interested in architecture, plus the sad but true fact that these women were marginalized by the profession, their colleagues, and the media. Host George Smart meets with MW speakers Libby Otto and Jane Hall, two authors discussing amazing women in architecture we don’t know about – and why we should.

In this podcast, our expert panel consider what architecture’s responsibilities should be to the public good and whether it is time for architects to adopt a new code of ethics. Today with architecture in thrall to private interests to a greater degree than perhaps ever before, it is time to reassess architects’ responsibilities beyond those to the client, and to the broader public good. Do architecture and architects require a new code of ethics? If so, what should be the parameters and who should decide them? Speakers include Jane Hall, founding member of Turner prize-winning Assemble and Christine Murray, editor of Architectural Review (chair). Image caption: Tower construction © Artur Bogacki/Alamy
