Back after a three month break. What better way to start than with Bob Skyles and his Skyrockets with I'm gonna die with a broken heart. Three from the hugely popular Inkspots- Everyone is saying hello again, Thoughtless and one of their big hit Java Jive. Just one of their records alone, If I didn't care, sold 19 million copies. Their style rarely changed but they were ground breakers. They sold well to both black and white audiences. Ted Heath and his music with Walking Shoes. Two soporific songs next- Paul Robson with Just a wearyin' and Rosemary Clooney with Brahms lullaby. Should have put them at the end. We all could have nodded off. Not often we play the pipes on Forgotten songs but we have two tunes from The Bowhill Colliery and District band. Bowhill in Fife was the scene of a pit disaster in 1931 when 10 men were killed. Like many factories, foundaries, collieries Bowhill had a works band. This being Scotland a pipe band as well as a silver band. The Rhytmn Maniacs with the wonderfully titled- 'The gag song( She was only a bookmakers daughter.) To be fair it does have some funny lines. Max Darewski was a Manchester born child prodigy. At the age of 9 he was conducting a full orchestra. He had a successful career as a composer. Not convinced his genius was on display with this number- Shadow man. Sadly he died only aged 35. Edna Thomas was a African American actress and singer. She performed on Broadway and on film. Here she gives a very refined performance of Mamzelle Zizi. No need to tell you about Roy Rodgers, here singing A four legged friend. Thank goodness he mentions Trigger at the end! Alma Cogan advises Never tango with an Eskimo but in this weather we need all the heat we can get. Lionel Hampton gives laid back vocals to The mood I'm in. Naturally he gives us some vibrophone too. We finish with two BBC records. Charles Williams leads his orchestra with own composition, The Devils Gallop. This was the signature tune to Dick Barton, Special Agent. A 'cliffhanger' radio series that the BBC ran from 1946 to 1951. As we recorded this on Christmas we end with Come All Ye Faithfull, from the BBC Choir. I'm sure Lord Reith would approve. He was the stoney faced kill joy who ran the BBC for many years and he certainly wouldn't have approved of The Gag song. Far too ribald!!

I'll be frank. If you're due for one of your vaccination shots and you PAY for a coffee today...well, sorry, but you're an idiot. Because no matter where you are, in what corner of this wonderful country of ours, I can pretty much guarantee you that a vaccination centre near your place is giving away free coffees to everyone who gets the jab today.Call it double shots for double shots! I've gone through the plans in every single DHB in the entire country and my main takeaway for Super Saturday is that we are in for some serious caffeine crashes. If you need something to compliment your Java Jive on this most Kiwi of occasions, the good news is New Zealand has the smorgasboard to match.Cromwell Pharmacy has home baking. Life Pharmacy on Manners Street has free donuts. Newton School has Halal sausages and in Rotorua they've cooked up hangi. Get the pfizer, see a geyser!Actually, one of the things I enjoyed while researching all of the Super Saturday events was playing ‘match the free food to the DHB'.Guess where you'd find the vaccination centre offering a free ‘big block' of Whittakers chocolate. And be advised, they actually go out of their way on the District Health Board website to clarify it's definitely a big block of Whittakers. That's in Lower Hutt.Where would you get delicious bacon and egg fry bread? Moturoa in Taranaki. What Rotary Club is putting on coffee and a slice? No word if it's ginger or caramel or tan, but you know it's gonna be delicious coming from the fine bakers in Whanganui.Free icecream? Greymouth, baby. Here you go... guess this one: Where can you get a vaccine and a free glass of refreshing, lightly-carbonated, gut-friendly kombucha? That's at Wellworks Pharmacy in Wellington, of course. You get vaccinated on an Air New Zealand jet. There are competitions galore. If you're in Hawkes Bay you can win an iPhone. If you're in up North in Whananaki you can win a stay at a fancy resort. If you're in Richmond you can get free tickets to the speedway. In Dunedin if you get vaccinated, you can win a wax treatment. Increased viral resistance AND a pubic spruce! Two birds with one stone. It's easy to be facetious about all of this stuff. It's easy to mock Super Saturday and the Vaxathon. Maybe it feels a bit silly to you. I must admit, the pragmatist in me wonders how many people who haven't had a jab yet are going to be won over by a vaxathon. And after all, it's the first jabs that matter most in the battle for vaccination. But today, on Day-whatever-it-is of lockdown in Auckland, I've made a conscious decision to be positive. Super Saturday is about more than just jabs. It's bigger than that. It's an occasion to unite us a bit. A common cause at an extremely stressful time. And fundamentally, I think we should do whatever it takes to get as many people vaccinated as possible. Whatever it takes. If that means a few thousand coffees and chocolate bars and Mr Whippy soft serves, good! If someone is incentivised to be vaccinated by a chance to rip some unwanted hair off their nether regions, a sack-back-crack-wax-and-vax, great! If it means watching Ashley Bloomfield get dunked in a vat of congealing gunge, fantastic! And if all of that stuff still isn't enough to incentivise you to get vaccinated, maybe the less silly stuff will get you or someone you know over the line.In most cases, one vaccine dose will keep you alive. Two vaccine doses will keep you out of hospital. They'll help to keep your family safe. Your friends. Little kids who can't be vaccinated. It's the safe thing to do. It's the civic-minded thing to do. It's the Kiwi thing to do. And whether we're vaccinated or not... the virus is coming.

First, a story about the ideal first encounter. Michael Franks - When She Is Mine (1985) His first album was on the Brut label. WAMPUS DOESN'T SOUND SO BAD NOW, DOES IT??? The players on his albums are pretty much the same studio cats on every yacht rock act's harder-to-play stuff. Chicago, Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Dan Lewis, everyone. But it's a testament to that cadre of professionals that they can do something as laid back and open as Franks' music AND Steely Dan. I hear the difference. You do, too, if you listen to this show. But...they ruined Chicago. And for that, I will never forgive David Foster. I LOVE this song. I can even forgive the couplet, "She's a virtuoso in amoroso..." No purist, I. Manhattan Transfer - Walk In Love (1976) Michael Franks - Tiger In The Rain (1979) The Brighter Side Of Darkness - Love Jones (1972) Brighter Side of Darkness was a short-lived American R&B/soul group. They were formed in 1971 at Calumet High School in Chicago, Illinois. Their lead singer was 12-year-old Darryl Lamont. "Love Jones" was a #16 hit in the US in December 1972, and was certified gold by the RIAA. They released an album, Love Jones, in 1973. "Love Jones" was parodied as "Basketball Jones" by Cheech and Chong in 1973. The parody was released as a single in August 1973 and reached #15 on the Hot 100. The parody got higher than the original. Oh well, as long as the checks clear. I don't think they all did. They broke up after this. Manhattan Transfer - It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference (1976) This album Coming Out featured Popsicle Toes by Michael Franks. Michael Franks - The Lady Wants To Know (1977) Manhattan Transfer - Chicken Bone Bone (1971) Manhattan Transfer Phase 1 I guess. Wikipedia: Jukin' remained an orphan in the Manhattan Transfer's catalog. Issued on a different label than their future successes, with a different line-up and sound from what became their trademark, Jukin' is not acknowledged on the band's official website, nor have any of its tracks been anthologized on compilations. The revised group re-recorded the track "Java Jive" on the group's next album. It is the re-recorded version, not the version found on Jukin' , that can be found on multiple compilation albums. FOR ALL YOU MANHATTAN TRANSFER PURISTS OUT THERE. Don Ellis - Excursion Part 2 (1970) Written by the same fellow that wrote "Walk In Love" which you'll recall from earlier in my show. Don Ellis - Pussy Wiggle Stomp (1970) Jay Graydon on guitar. He produced Manhattan Transfer and played that one-of-a-kind solo on "Peg" by Steely Dan. Graydon has written over 200 songs. His catalog includes the Grammy winners "Turn Your Love Around" (co-written with Steve Lukather (Toto) and Bill Champlin (Chicago)) as performed by George Benson and "After the Love Has Gone" (co-written with David Foster (who ruined Chicago) and Bill Champlin (who stood by and watched)) as performed by Earth, Wind & Fire, many songs written with and for Al Jarreau (including "Mornin'", "Breakin' Away", "After All", etc.), and several hits with... Manhattan Transfer. So, Donny Jenczka...I auditioned for your band in 1985. I sang the song "After All". What was wrong with my performance? Why didn't I get into the band? Mike Sheridan’s Lot - Make Them Understand (1965) Roy Wood's first recorded song. Michael Franks - Can't Seem to Shake This Rock and Roll (1973) Michael Franks had a strange take on the Rock. To be....frank? HAAHAHAHAHHA LOL Sick Man of Europe - Mandocello (1972) Cheap Trick before the mighty Robin Zander grabbed the mic from these idiots. Nature’s Way - Zander and Kent (1973) Muse - Across The Skies (1970) Cheech and Chong (featuring Tyrone Shoelaces) - Basketball Jones (1974) Serendipity! George Harrison plays on this. So does Klaus Voorman. My sister had this album. Read the Wiki. Weldon Irvine - Love Jones (1974) This record got zero stars in the 1981 Rolling Stone Record Guide, so I had to check it out. If you use the RSRG to help inform your purchases, please take care to note the person doing the reviews. There are (were) many, and I think the guy that reviewed Gentle Giant was a big punk fan. Notable on this particular release is my favorite bass player, George Murray, before his stint with David Bowie. I never would have known that without the shitty RS review! Manhattan Transfer - The Twilight Zone (1979) Mahogany Rush - Maxoom (1972) The worst band to be signed to a major label. Mahogany Rush - Buddy (1972) In an effort to gain press attention, the original record company created a fictional story that Frank Marino, prior to starting the band, had spent time in a mental institution after taking LSD and was visited by Jimi Hendrix in a vision. This gave him his inspiration to play as he did on the first album which very closely mirrored the style of Jimi Hendrix. By the time the third album, Strange Universe was recorded, this approach to filling the public desire to purchase newer Jimi Hendrix-styled music had been perfected. Rock and Roll will MESS YOU UP.
It's one of the most debated questions amongst baseball purists over the last 20 years. Alex Rodriguez played on a last place team & had a career year, yet finished 2nd to Miguel Tejada who played on a 1st place team. Does team performance truly matter, or should the pure numbers decide? Greg goes in depth to determine whether Rodriguez or Tejada should have won the 2002 AL MVP award. On the inaugural "Java Jive" Greg talks about something that doesn't happen often: starters pitching into the 10th inning. It has rarely happened in the last 25 years, so Greg goes back and analyzes every time it's happened since that start of the 1995 season. Write a review, leave a rating, and subscribe! JAVA JIVE - Stefan PAUL and friends
Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the man who's designed some of the most famous film sets ever made. Sir Ken Adam was the production designer on seven of the James Bond films - including Dr No, Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever. His bold designs skilfully created the lairs of a string of arch villans, perhaps best typified by the headquarters of Blofeld in You Only Live Twice - which was built inside an extinct volcano with an artificial lake placed on top.Sir Ken Adam began life as Klaus Adam, born into a middle class family in 1920s Berlin. As Hitler rose to power the Adam family were forced to flee to Britain. Klaus adopted the name Keith during the war when he became a fighter pilot and the only German to fight for the RAF. He became known as Heinie the Tank Buster in recognition of his daring raids across the continent. After the war he changed his name again to Ken and trained as an architect. This led to work in the film industry; first as a draughtsman, and then as an art director and eventually as a production designer. He won two Oscars: the first for Barry Lyndon, which he made with Stanley Kubrick in the 70s, and The Madness of King George.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Java Jive by Inkspots Book: Propylaen Kunstgeschichte - The History of Art Luxury: Sketchpad and felt pens to design
