"Keep Portland Weird" is the slogan you'll see plastered on many walls, billboards, and bumper stickers as you make your way across the Rose City. Well, LAFC and Portland did their best to keep Portland weird in their 2-2 draw on Saturday, and you can hear all about it here on Episode 296. With Filly still in New York, our good buddy Chris Lafferty joined Scarf to break down the match in Portland. The first half belonged to Evander, as The Real Deal gave Portland the lead on a pass to Felipe Mora for their first goal, and then re-took the lead for his club with a beautiful moment of brilliance right before halftime. If not for a great through ball by Timmy Tillman to Mateusz Bogusz, LAFC would have entered the half down 2-0. Everything went upside down for the hosts just minutes into the second half. Maxime Crepeau was shown a straight red after tackling Denis Bouanga just outside the box, and the ensuing free kick was rocketed home by Bogusz for his brace. Down a man, it was Portland who maintained the majority of solid chances in the second half, with LAFC able to muster a few quality chances during stoppage time, but no goals. 8 yellows, one red, and over 30 fouls later, both sides walk away with a point in the 2-2 draw. Also on this episode, Filly gets to see Doc Gooden at Citi Field, Lafferty endures some trivia from Scarf, and we wish a happy birthday to friend of the pod, Chris Aparri, affectionately known as DJ Flict. We hope you enjoy this episode, and we will see you back in a week for 297!

Terry Currier grew up in Seattle and took a liking to music in school, playing the flute-o-phone in 4th Grade. The following summer he took up the violin with the Suzuki method. Three months into the 5th grade his father Lando, noticed a slide in the enthusiasm about the instrument while he did his daily practicing. “Are you not happy with the violin?' Terry said “the sound the other violins make hurt my ears. They screech.” After a serious conversation, his father found out Terry would rather play the clarinet and woke him up a month later and presented him with a new clarinet. To make up for being 4 months behind on the instrument, he took private lessons to catch up. By junior high it was apparent that Terry would go to college after high school and pursue music. Between music and his participation in Boy Scouts, that pretty much took up most of his free time as a youth. When he was 16 he decided to get a motorcycle versus a car and he learned to drive in the yard. At 16 ½, he realized a motorcycle was not the best mode of transportation in the Northwest, where it rained and snowed in the winter, so he bought a ‘66 Mustang. It had a radio in it and he discovered recorded music for the first time. A week after he turned 17, he went to his first concert. He saw Nitzinger opening up for Leon Russell and the Shelter People. 2 weeks later he applied for a job in a record store (DJ's Sound City). He was hired solely on his enthusiasm and not for his musical knowledge, which was close to nil. HISTORIC MOMENTS IN CARRER. - Pioneered live music in a Record Store. In 1989, while deciding what to do for Music Millennium's 20th Anniversary, he turned to his then partner, Don MacLeod and stated “Let's have 20 straight days of live music in the store,” After looking at renting a system, they decided to buy a system and put a permanent stage in the store. Since then Music Millennium has hosted over 4000 live performances including Soundgarden, Steve Earle, Cyndi Lauper with the only ever instore performances of Randy Newman, Joe Strummer and Keith Emerson. - Currier and Music Millennium dubbed “modern day folk heroes” for their role in the brilliantly effective crusade against used CD policies. Discontent with policies instituted by 4 of the 6 major distribution companies, Terry fought to overturn the policies. After Garth Brooks announced his new album would not be available in stores that sold used product, Currier immediately responded with a “West Coast Bar-B-Q For Retail Freedom” tour – actually roasting Brooks CDs, VHS, Posters and cassettes to dramatize the retailer' plight. The tour started in Bellingham, WA and hit 9 stores between there and San Diego, CA. The protest captured the attention of TNN, CNN, Forbes and People magazine, and resulted in a repeal of the restrictive polices. - In the aftermath of the Bar-B-Q For Retail Freedom, Terry realized the common concerns and interests in the 9 stores on the tour as well as stores that reached out about the issue from around the country. He presented a proposal to Mark Cope, Retail Editor of Album Network and arranged for a meeting at the NARM convention in Florida. The idea was to create a group of retailers who could work records together and make a difference as well as act as a support team. This germinated into a meeting in San Francisco at the NAIRD convention in May 1995, with 25 retailers from across the country meeting in a room for a day to see if they could find commonality to work together. CIMS was born. - After a several year germination of an idea to support local unique businesses and talking multiple times to John Kunz of Waterloo Records about a new slogan in his city, “Keep Austin Weird”, Currier created “Keep Portland Weird.' at the suggestion of Kunz. It has organically become the city of Portland's motto and most used phase. All production by Cody Maxwell. Artwork by Cody Maxwell. Full Text: Two of my kids are young adults working retail. They are eyewitnesses to the decline of what was once The Most Livable City in the Nation. Over the weekend, my daughter was working her shift, when a man walked into the store and started haranguing her. He accused her of following him through the store. “I was just hanging up clothes,” she told me. When she left on break, he was hanging outside the store and berated her again. He spent most of that afternoon aggressively harassing people up and down Hawthorne Boulevard. A few days earlier, my son stopped at a fast-food drive-through on his way home. Ahead of him was a pedestrian at the drive-through window. That guy pulled a gun on the cashier. The quick-thinking cashier shut the window, walked away, and called the police who arrived 30 minutes later. It's not just my kids. Starbucks recently announced it's closing two Portland stores out of concerns for employee safety. I know people like to say, “Keep Portland Weird.” But, weird isn't working. City leaders think they're serving some social justice cause by allowing troubled people to harass or threaten teens who are just trying to do their jobs. There's no justice in wondering if working your retail or fast-food shift might end in getting assaulted or shot. Portland can be a livable city, but public safety is a key ingredient. We're missing that ingredient, and it seems City Hall has little interest in bringing it back. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coffeewithcascade/message

Jackie joined Smegma in 1983, ten years after the collective was founded in Pasadena, CA. but her west coast underground bone fides stretch back before the 'Summer of Love'. She tells us about seeing the Grateful Dead playing on a flatbed truck in the panhandle of Golden Gate Park in 1966 as a 10 year old. Her adolescent dreams of coming of age in San Francisco and one day joining the The Cockettes were dashed when her family relocated from the Bay Area to Salem, OR. in the mid 70's. Determined to keep her freak flag flying, she quickly set her sights on Portland and immersed herself in the burgeoning punk rock / new wave scene. The conversation is a wealth of Portland punk / underground history. We learn about the long gone venues, people and bands that made this place the "Keep Portland Weird" city of today. Even the most dedicated scholars of PDX punk will likely be surprised to learn that Jackie's first band was called Gumby Anti-Christ and featured a teenage Jerry A. of Poison Idea! It's been nearly a month since the Seattle Sounders last played, but they return on Sunday against the Portland Timbers. It's definitely a weird one, though, as there will be no fans, likely artificial crowd noise and uncertain stakes.  What we know is that this is probably about as close to "normal" as we're going to get for the foreseeable future.  Aaron and Jeremiah discuss all of that, sing the Sounders' praises for the announcement of 2021 season-ticket renewals and answer many of your questions. This week's music: Perry Como - "Seattle", "RVIVR - "Ocean Song", Woody Guthrie - "Roll On Columbia", "Your Journey Begins" - OurMusicBox (Jay Man) (CC BY 4.0) Thanks to James Woollard, Sounders Public Address Announcer, for doing our sponsor reads. From the jump of this eighth episode of 'Uninvited', Jerry passive aggressively asks for credit for being right on a couple of things that everyone with a brain already knew regarding men and politics (0:57) while meandering down Sidebar Lane to discuss his belief in jinx's, Facebook and the KC Football team while also making a humble brag, which he is prone to do. Jerry goes in on the AOC/Yoho situation in Congress (3:15) while also lamenting the GOP of old (7:13) , his dysfunctional relationship with winning and losing (8:16) and how a particular KS republican reminds him of his childhood fear (12:04). The actual things Jerry wanted to talk about today: Operation Legend (13:21) and the ties to Kansas City politics, the tyranny taking place in Portland (20:55) and the murder of BLM protestor and military veteran Garrett Foster in Austin, TX this weekend (26:22) all touch upon the dangers of racism and he makes a call for all of us to abolish racism. In an effort to lighten the mode, Jerry gives his birthday shoutouts for July 26th. Just know he is going to shout out BirdBox, Underworld, The Transporter and Clockwork Orange...so there ya go folks! This is why no one invites Jerry to things. :) Hope you enjoy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jerry-jones5/message
