Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is relocating its U.S. headquarters from Louisville, Kentucky, to Plano, Texas, in yet another corporate exodus to the Lone Star State. The move follows a trend of major businesses fleeing high-regulation, high-tax states in favor of Texas' business-friendly environment. KFC's parent company, Yum Brands, aims to enhance synergy among its brands, including Pizza Hut, already based in Plano. While KFC will maintain some presence in Kentucky, this shift reflects a broader pattern of companies seeking economic stability and lower operational costs—something states like California and New York have increasingly failed to provide. With Elon Musk's SpaceX, Oracle, and even Meta shifting resources to Texas, the state's pro-business policies continue to attract major players. Meanwhile, liberal-led states downplay these losses, but the writing is on the wall: businesses follow opportunity, not bureaucracy.

The two cook up conversation surrounding the question of how men can stay engaged into old age. How would Ben and Chad envision themselves spending their retirement when that time comes? What does the story of Colonel Sanders' founding of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) provide in the way of inspiration? He never gave up, put crazy miles on his car, promoted and sold Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), and worked well into his seventies. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners, the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is well it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Jim's Razorback Pizza Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast. I'm Dave Young, alongside Stephen Semple. And we're talking about a brand today that's been around forever and I'm trying to think of my memories of them. I mean, I grew up in a town that didn't have one for a while. I think about their marketing today and it's gotten weirder and weirder and that's the Colonel, KFC. We're going to find out about Colonel Sanders, right, and KFC. Stephen Semple: Yeah. So pop quiz. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Is the Colonel a Colonel? Dave Young: I know the answer to this because it's a related thing to an honorary that I have, which is an Admiral in the great Navy of the state of Nebraska. So the Colonel I'm guessing that there's an honorific. Stephen Semple: There is because both Fred Astaire and Whoopi Goldberg are also colonels. Dave Young: Colonels. All right. I outrank them I think, as an Admiral. Stephen Semple: Well, it's a pretty important title because it's the highest award you can get in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. KFC was founded by Harland David Sanders and at the time of his death in 1980 KFC had 6,000 outlets and was doing $2 billion in sales. So it had become a pretty big deal in the fast food space. Harland was born on September 9th, 1890. And when he was six his dad died and his mom was forced to go to work. And this left young Harland to take care of the household. This is where he learned to cook. And he left home at the age of 13 and he did a lot of different jobs early in his life. He was an insurance salesman. He was a filling station operator. And when he turned 40, he was offered the chance to take over a Shell gas station located on US Route 25, just outside of North Corbin, right on the edge of the Appalachian Mountains. Stephen Semple: And it was on this busy highway. Now, when he took over the gas station, he decided to convert the gas station store room into a small eatery. So he put up a couple of tables, few simple chairs, and this kept him busy. He was the cook, he was the server, he was the gas attendant, but it worked out well. Well enough that four years later he bought the larger station that was across the road and he expanded the six tables. And this is when he started to sell fried chicken. He had been working on a recipe for fried chicken. Dave Young: And he's in his 40s at this point. Stephen Semple: Oh yeah. Yeah, he's in his mid-40s at this point. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: So for the next few years, he experiments with the recipe for fried chicken and he lands on what is now the original recipe with 11 herbs and spices. Right. Dave Young: It's a secret. Stephen Semple: And it is a secret. It's actually a secret they've guarded pretty tightly. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: But he also decided he needed to become better at managing restaurant. And it's interesting how we've done a few podcasts now where people have reached this stage where they realize, you know what, I need to get some more information. I need to get some more knowledge. So he took a course at Cornell University of hotel administration learning a little bit more about managing a restaurant. So now it's a couple years later, it's 1936.

Famous fried chicken brand Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) announced its plans to produce chicken nuggets in laboratories. In line with its goal of creating a “restaurant of the future,” KFC is undertaking an innovative project to produce meat through 3D bioprinting technology. The restaurant chain has partnered with Russian research laboratory 3D Bioprinting Solutions to develop the technology and is aiming to test the final product in Moscow by this fall. According to KFC's press release, the company's latest endeavor was prompted by healthy lifestyle trends, increasing demand for meat alternatives, and the need to come up with eco-friendly food production methods. KFC's lab-produced meat will be made with chicken cells and plant material. Using these ingredients, the company can maintain the quality of traditional chicken meat without the need to slaughter chickens. KFC will also provide the laboratory with ingredients like breading and spices to ensure that the cell-based meat will taste like the fast-food chain's original chicken. According to KFC, the production of bioprinted meat is more eco-friendly than that of regular meat, as it does not involve the use of additives that are present in livestock farming. The bioprinting process also makes use of less energy than traditional methods, resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions. This method is also considered more ethical than the usual food production process because it replicates meat without harming animals. Raisa Polyakova, general manager of KFC Russia, said the fast-food chain is working to make bioprinted chicken meat available to customers not only in Russia but also in other parts of the world.

At age 5 his father died. At age 16 he quit school. At age 17 he had already lost four jobs. At age 18 he got married. Between ages 18 and 22, he was a railroad conductor and failed. He joined the army and washed out there. He applied for law school, he was rejected. He became an insurance sales man and failed again. At age 19 he became a father. At age 20 his wife left him and took their baby daughter. He became a cook and dishwasher in a small cafe. He failed in an attempt to kidnap his own daughter, and eventually he convinced his wife to return home.At age 65 he retired. On the 1st day of retirement he received a check from the Government for $105. He felt that the Government was saying that he couldn’t provide for himself. He decided to commit suicide, life wasn’t worth living anymore; he had failed so much. He sat under a tree writing his will, but instead, he wrote what he would have accomplished with his life.He realized there was much more that he hadn’t yet done. There was one thing he could do better than anyone he knew. And that was how to cook. So he borrowed $87 against his check and bought and fried up some chicken using his recipe, and went door to door to sell them to his neighbors in Kentucky. Remember, at age 65 he was ready to commit suicide. But at age 88 Colonel Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) built an Empire. By the time of Sanders' death, there were an estimated 6,000 KFC outlets in 48 countries worldwide, with $2 billion ($6.1 billion today) of sales annually. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in the United Kingdom has revived Colonel / ˈkɜrn(ə)l / Sanders as its icon in its latest TV advertisement. The advertisement was released to show that the company has already bounced back from the chicken crisis that happened in February. The crisis was caused by a chicken shortage and led to the forced closure of over 600 stores in the United Kingdom. The real Colonel Sanders is KFC's founder and brand ambassador. He is used as the company's icon all over the world, but he has been missing in action for over 40 years in the KFC UK scene. The advertisement starts with a news clip about the chicken crisis. It was followed shortly by Colonel Sanders' appearance and a compilation of some of the old clips wherein he talked about his business philosophy. Sanders pointed out that quitting is not an option for him and that he always gives it his best shot even during trying times. Meghan Farren, chief marketing officer for KFC UK and Ireland, emphasized that Colonel Sanders' philosophy and recipe helped the business stay afloat during the crisis. KFC UK is not the first one to bring back Colonel Sanders. In 2015, KFC US also relaunched the icon. KFC US reintroduced Colonel Sanders in an advertisement to honor the 75th anniversary of the original recipe and to recover from declining sales. By bringing its famous icon back to the spotlight, KFC US hoped to regain its former glory in the country.
Damini as written, sung, mixed and mastered by Dj Floops depicts the story of a Chutney singer who go to a house in Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago to celebrate the birth of a child often referred to as a barahee. There he meet a beautiful girl named "Damini" who falls in love with the singer and wishes to show her love for him by cooking him a meal. But Damini is far from domesticated so she offers him Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Dj Floops is an old fashioned Hindu Man and tests Damini's love by demanding she make roti on a fireside. Poor Damini does not even know how to light a chula (fireside) but Dj Floops shows her blow...... the fire :) Lyrics: Verse 1 I went in a Barahee, Down in Sangre Grande, I met a sundar ladki, Her name was Damini, She greet me with a smile, and say stay for awhile, She will get food to eat, KFC on speed dial, I said no Damini, I am very hungry, Go in the kitchen, and make some roti, She fuss and she fight, Trying with all she might, Nothing she could do, to make the chulha light, I say no Damini, Roll up your lungi (long dress) Grab hold the pookani (a stick to blow the fire) and blow it forcefully! Verse 2 Now is weekly I going by Damini, She carry me by Aji, To make plans to marry, Aji say sonny, what you want with beti, I say that Love see and she is my wife to be. Verse 3 Aji Say Son you must understand, First time Damini dey with man, She might not treat you right, as a husband! I say no tanty, Don't play no lookhani, Is long time she checking me for the pookani! Break Blow the fire, blow the fire, show you could do the wok, Blow the fire, blow the fire, dont you ever stop, Blow the fire, blow the fire, Don't worry about the heat, Blow the fire, blow the fire, Till you feel sweet Blow the fire, blow the fire, Prove wrong your tanty, Blow the fire, blow the fire, Blow the pookanee! Damon Gameau, Actor, Director, Author, filmmaker and the creator of "That Sugar Film" drops by Wellness Force radio to discuss why he's started a movement to help change the way you think about "healthy foods." It's no surprise that many people you know have either dealt with or currently are in the process of breaking free from sugar. Modern day research papers from top leaders in the wellness movement are now showing the exact science as to why it so incredibly hard to let go of sugar: We are physiologically wired so that once we come in contact with sugar (which is rare in nature), that we crave it more and more. With clients, I see a lot of great progress in activity, sleep, and hydration, but this sugar piece this is a subtle foe; when you least expect it, it can slowly creep back into the diet and start wreaking havoc on progress. Sugar & Childhood This episode hit me in both the chest and in the stomach. On today's show, I talk about some things from my childhood that came during the live interview with Damon, and he shares the shocking findings of his 60 day "healthy food challenge" where he developed nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and gained an incredible amount of weight. All from eating 2300 or less calories a day while maintaining healthy exercise levels by eating "heart approved" healthy foods. Breaking Free From Sugar If you're on a wellness journey and letting go of old weight, or if you're looking for more energy then this is going to be an absolute knockout for you! This week on the podcast, Damon Gameau of the documentary, That Sugar Film, shares with us how the food, media, and grocery store industries continue to push us into consuming more and more sugar, how that sugar affects us, and what we can do to fight back and eat healthy. During the filming of That Sugar Film, Damon visited the United States and purposefully ate foods and drinks that we see as healthy, but actually have tons of hidden sugar. As you will discover, the experiment took a toll on his body, mind, and emotional energy. There’s nothing wrong with treating ourselves to something delicious once in awhile, but when we have a soda here, a candy bar there, and a strawberry banana smoothie from Jamba Juice on our way home from work, every grain of sugar starts to add up. All these sweet foods and drinks may give us a quick buzz of energy, but left unchecked we can find ourselves in a sugar coma, ready to crash, and emotionally drained. We all know that too much sugar is “bad for you,” but what do we do when there’s hidden sugar in supposedly healthy foods such as smoothies, yogurts, sports drinks, and juices. Taking Advantage of Our Biology The advertising and media industries have a lot of power that manipulates our food and beverage choices. Through television, social media, point-of-sale and other outlets, these advertisements can spread fast and vary greatly, including celebrity endorsements and promoting important charitable causes. Celebrities such as Beyonce are singing the praises of Pepsi and even sports star LeBron James has promoted McDonald’s and the pizza franchise Blaze. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) sells some of the unhealthiest fast food that can cause so much damage to our bodies, but yet promotes cancer awareness by selling Buckets for the Cure. These endorsements and promotions send mixed signals to children and adults alike. Humans tend to crave sugars as a default. Even the mental image of sugary foods release the same endorphins as the feeling of love and happiness. Just simply seeing an image of a chocolate bar, soda, or a juicy burger from McDonald’s with the slogan, “I’m lovin’ it,” can flip the switch in our brain to crave these types of empty calorie products. Thin On The Outside, Fat On The Inside There’s a wide misconception that if you’re thin, you’re automatically healthy and if you’re fat, you’re unhealthy. But the reality is, you can be thin and at a normal weight with a very high metabolic rate and still be eating lots of processed foods with added sugars. This is known in Australia as “TOFI,” or in America as “skinny fat,” where large amounts of fat surrounding your internal organs is present that can’t be seen from the outside. At some point over the course of many years of drinking sodas and eating foods with high amounts of sugar, a person can face extreme health dangers such as diabetes and heart attacks. During the production of That Sugar Film, Damon himself suffered from the beginnings of fatty liver disease within just 3 weeks of his sugar experiment. Can we turn back the clocks? Not really, but what we can do to improve our health for the future, is to go through the process of eating healthier foods and avoiding sugars. Over time, your body, mind, and energy will improve with natural sugars from fruits and vegetables. Uncovering The Truth About Sugar For many years, the sugar and food industries have been hiding information from us by not sharing entire lists or percentages of ingredients on nutrition labels. Without even realizing it, we were probably consuming even more added sugar than we should have each day! These industries still need to provide more information to the public, but fortunately, organizations like the FDA are working to have the sugar and food industries include more information and larger labels on packaging to help people understand what they’re actually consuming. This change is so important in order to have the freedom to make nutritious decisions each day. You can turn your back to the food and sugar industries as well by doing your own research and discovery healthier alternatives. One good tip to keep in mind is to stay within the perimeters of grocery stores and try to eat as many foods without nutrition labels. Just focus on eating natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, fish, meat, and poultry. Michael Covel speaks with Megan McArdle on today’s podcast. McArdle is a Bloomberg View columnist who writes on economics, business and public policy. She is the author of "The Up Side of Down: Why Failing Well Is the Key to Success”. She founded the blog "Asymmetrical Information”. Covel and McArdle discuss “trophy kids” and taking the monkey bars away; the idea of a regulator out there trying to guarantee our safety; why the companies that make it aren’t the ones with the best strategic plan--it’s the ones that execute (and fail well); the power of experimentation; Nobel winner Vernon Smith and experimentation; the idea of learning in crisis; how sunk costs are difficult for a large part of the population to grasp; Van Halen, errors, and M&M’s; normative error; small, manageable risks; forager morality vs. farmer morality; and a story about Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). This engrossing biography of Kentucky Fried Chicken/KFC founder Harland Sanders tells a uniquely American story of a dirt-poor striver with unlimited ambition who launched one of the world’s most successful brands—and then ended up as a mere symbol for the corporation that bought him out.
